Romantic Florrie, scatty Daisy and snobby Alison are neighbours, living their married lives in the tiny English village of Lower Amblegate where everyone knows everybody. Together the three friends share laughter, tears, and things they wouldn’t want anybody else knowing. But unbeknownst to them, a scandal is brewing. As rumours circulate, the gossips go into overdrive, rocking marriages and revealing the women have much more in common than just neighbourly bonds…
I absoultely LOVED this! It was like an episode of Desperate Housewives. The amount of drama and scandals that went on was crazy! A lot that happened in the book was so unexpected. In every chapter something was going on, or bombshells were dropped.
I thought the 3 main characters Florrie, Daisy and Alison were fantastic. They are all different in their own ways, three opposites who come together as neighbours and share coffee together and are there for each other.
Then of course theres good old Mrs Thompson. She isnt actually a main character and we dont find out too much about her other than shes a bit of a gossip and she knows and spreads everyones business.
On another note can I just say what a beautiful bright cover that this book has! Definitely draws you into wanting to read this book.
I read this in a matter of hours it is so addicting, one that you just cant put down and are gutted when it ends - Dont you just love finding a book like that?
This was my first Debbie Viggiano book and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely be reading more from her.
Thank you to Netgalley, Gingersnap books and Debbie Viggiano for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
Wow there is a hell of a lot happening in this book. It's like an episode of desperate housewives or similar. In every single chapter a clamaity happened. Bombshells were dropped every where and it was a real whirlwind of a book.
I'm not a massive fan of programmes like desperate housewives. So for me I found this book a little too much. A little too over the top.
I kept shaking my head with all the events that happen as this stuff doesn't go on in real life surely. Or at least not at the same time.
I thought that the characters were ok. Some of them really got on my nerves thou. And I found them all a little irritating at points.
I loved the front cover of this book as it is beautiful and that is what sucks me in.
It was ok. Just not for me.
You'll find my review on both Amazon and Goodreads under publication date. On Amazon under k.e.whittard and on Goodreads under Karen Whittard. Happy reading everyone
Wow. There is a hell of a lot of going on in this book. So much drama and that's just from the author in the comments ;)
I love chic lit! It's one of my favourite genres, it's a great way to tune off and get lost in a fun story for a couple of days. This book was not fun, I think it intended to be, but it was all over the place, predictable, silly and not in a good way.
This book centres around the main character Florrie, she lives in a cul-de-sac with her 2 neighbour friends Alison (the one that wants to act above her station, child in private school, social climber, etc) and Daisy (the one with lots of kids, slummy mummy, etc). They live in a little village where everyone knows everyone, and soon their lives and relationships are the main topic on everyone's lips.
My first problem with this book is that I didn't like one character. Florrie acts like she is so entitled and moral with her husband, she did the exact same thing as him - however she tries to justify it. It's the same with Alison and Daisy, they are so unlikeable. Alison is stuck up and nasty, and even so is Daisy to a point. They are all stereotypical 'chic lit characters ' but exaggerated beyond belief.
Secondly, the fact that marriage and cheating in relationships is considered so normal and 'such fun' in this story really doesn't sit well with me. Cheating is never something to be glamorised and laughed about, in my opinion.
Thirdly, and most importantly is that Viggiano touches upon domestic abuse in this book, in the worst way possible. I know stories don't need to have huge morals, or put across a message. I just think the domestic abuse wasn't needed and the fact that it was just brushed over, rather distasteful. The fact that it was made a joke of is disgusting, fictional story or not, domestic abuse is not a humorous subject.
Overall, this book wouldn't be something I would recommend. It brings up and then skates over really important issues. All the plots and twists are predictable. It's all over the place, and the only lasting impression it leaves, is a bad one.
I picked this up on KU and hadn’t read any reviews before reading it. To be honest, I should probably stopped at the rather shudderingly bad ‘kiss’ on page 2:
‘Mmm, mmm. Oh Florrie. Mmm, mmm. I need you. I need you so much. Mmm, mmm. I’ll miss the eight oh-seven and catch the eight thirty-two. Mmm, mmm. Get back in the house, Florrie. I can’t help it. Mmm, mmm. I simply have to have my wicked way with you and –‘
(and this is all said while he is busy with a ‘full-blown hungry devouring’ of her mouth.)
The characters are clichéd and trite: Daisy - the incompetent mother who is portrayed as little more than a slattern, Alison - the snob who treats everyone with utter disdain and Florrie who is the ‘heroine’ of the story, though I could find little to like about her. And for the life of me I cannot ever see someone who is portrayed as Alison is, ever being friendly towards Daisy.
The story centres around rocking marriages, which is a fair enough topic but it can’t make its mind up whether it is farce, frivolity or something much much darker.
The latter left me feeling very perturbed and wondering if such an event was appropriate in this book which pertains to be ‘humour and satire’. I have no problems with these events being written about, and indeed the writer made it very (horrifyingly) realistic, but I wasn’t expecting it in this. At the very least she could add a warning to the blurb?
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review. This is the 1st book I've been given to review, so I feel dreadful giving it such a horrible review.
This book wasn’t for me, so perhaps take my review with a grain of salt.
Characters were off-the-charts ludicrously unbelievable and stereotyped, with stiff, unrealistic dialogue. The plot was even more preposterous. From little things like a character (supposedly focused on making her place at a private posh school and so would surely be socializing more than average) who is supposedly able to do drop off in such a short amount of time that her neighbors are still outside when she returns (has the author ever done drop-off at school?!) to big things like the major storyline element of the fabulously rich, focused-on-rich-stuff, ex-actress who is supposedly willing to hire the main character to paint her portrait (nude, of course).... even though she is a local, barely-beyond-hobby painter who's not painted anything but landscapes (because a person who paints landscapes can naturally paint a portrait, right?). Oh, and the portrait needs to be done in a week... with very little actual posing (and no photographs). Elements in the plot were also contradictory within the space of a couple of pages (won't put in spoilers).
Ok, so the plot. Basically one affair after another (and who was having an affair with whom was never a surprise)--mixed in with a sprinkling of abuse (physical and emotional) that was treated very superficially. Perhaps I'm not the target audience in that regard. But I think it was supposed to be a light-hearted chick-lit book about friendship (which I do enjoy), but I would hate to have any of these women as my friends.
Again, I really appreciate the opportunity to review this, so I regret giving it such a resounding thumbs down.
I liked the beginning of the book. I knew right off the bat that this was a book that required leaving your brain before the flip of the front cover. This is a good beach read; you don’t have to think too much about the story. You just need to laugh at the antics of the characters.
In the beginning, the story was a lot like a Desperate Housewives episode. I didn’t like the fact that the characters weren’t likeable, but reading this book was a mindless and fun activity.
Until the debauchery began. There’s a whole lot of cheating going on and it just was too stupid to read about.
The main character Florrie wasn’t all that likeable. The author tries hard to make her seem like the only sane person in the town, but a particular plot twist at the 20% mark shows us that she’s not exactly a saint either. Does that stop Saint Florrie from judging other people, though? Nope.
And don’t even get me started about the friendship between these women. They’re not even that nice to each other. Allison and Daisy are said to be friends in this book, but there wasn’t a single instance were they acted like they were. As the story progressed, I decided to take back my comment about it being similar to Desperate Housewives. The success of that TV show was due to a number of reasons, a key one being the friendship between the main characters. You don’t have that kind of friendship here. I don’t even think characters like these, if real, would be friends IRL.
There’s some domestic violence too. It’s hurried and is never discussed after the incident.
While there are a number of negatives, if you suspend disbelief throughout, you might get out of the book smiling a little at the humor in it too.
The cover is better than the story. Cute and quaint, small town, British romance. We follow 3 friends and their marital problems in a small town where gossip is out of control. There are many funny moments and I love the sarcasm, but there are too many ridiculous and boring moments too. So, I was underwhelmed. The narration was excellent, and it's free on plus Catalogue audible and KU too.
I hold my hands up and say this is not my favourite genre but once in a while I fancy reading something a bit lighter, that will make me smile, if not laugh. The Corner Shop of Whispers and the antics of Florrie, Daisy and Alison and the goings-on in Lower Amblegate would fit the bill, or so I thought. Rarely have I been so exasperated by a book. I know that I am supposed to suspend reality and just engage but this was just too silly for words. In fairness I must say that Ms Viggiano does write well and I could not help notice some of her phrasing which did her credit. The characters? I just did not find them credible, they were more like caricatures and don’t let me even mention the dialogue – particularly Daisy in her dirty pyjamas. It was all too much of a cliché. We have everybody’s grubby little secrets exposed in gossip and it all comes to a head – where else but at the May Ball, gorgeous gowns and exquisite champagne, really? I did finish the book (I think it only courteous when NetGalley provides access via my Kindle in return for an honest review) but I am not sure I would have otherwise. If you are expecting a Jilly Cooper or Bridget Jones’ Diary this is probably not for you. However if you are expecting Lena Kennedy (Lilly My Lovely) you will really enjoy this.
When I picked this book, I thought it sounded very promising, however, getting to know the characters, that changed quickly.
Everything about the characters seems extremely exaggerated, they clearly are walking-talking stereotypes. It´s not like there aren´t people as stuck-up as snobby Alison or as clumsy as Daisy who doesn´t care much about her appearance but it was all very much over the top unrealistic. Even more unrealistic was the fact that these two women would ever in a million years become friends. And even if (let`s play along for a second) this clumsy Daisy was invited to hang out with Alison´s even more stuck-up friends, would she really start talking about her bowel movements?! And if this was meant to be funny, it clearly didn´t work for me.
All other dialogues are just as farfetched, shallow and unbelievable.
Florrie, the main character, seems to be the most sensible of the bunch, but even she is somewhat annoying. Her husband, who seems to be a creep even before he turns nasty, disregards her opinions completely but puts on a disgusting show for the neighbour to prove he´s `the man`. Her mom walks all over Florrie and her dad, who seems lovely and is called off the toilet ("just as he settled down with his newspaper") twice. Really?!
Somehow almost everyone in this book is having an affair, while it is hinted at the fact that people are upset, they don´t show it very well (rather they go and sleep with someone else, as you do...). I am not a fan of cheating and I am even less of a fan of brushing a topic like cheating aside without giving it some attention. I know this is supposed to be a lighthearted book and maybe that´s why the awful consequences of cheating have been brushed over (at least for characters like Alison and her `friends`) but I think it is wrong to put a sensitive topic in a book if there is no intention to treat it appropriately. This is also true for the domestic violence that is touched upon. And also, what woman in her right mind sees another woman (it doesn't even have to be her friend), crying and with a ripped open pyjama top, stumbling out of the house and through her front garden to collapse in front of another house, and tells her off for showing her breasts in front of a her daughter?!
There were also some discrepancies. In the `now` Florrie finds out from her husband who the writer of a certain letter is, but when we hear about a conversation she has had with someone else a while ago, she already told him about it...
I was going to give this book 2 stars but now that I´ve written all this, and would be able to write more, I changed it to one. Some people seem to love this book so I am hoping that they continue to buy the author´s books.
I loved the pace of the story as everything moved quickly and kept my attention pretty much throughout. I enjoyed the fact that not everything is as it first appears which is I guess very true to life. Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors and everyone has secrets just some are bigger than others.
The characters were all interesting in their own way and they somehow find themselves friends aswell as neighbours. Daisy is very relaxed about things and says whatever is on her mind so is pretty likeable from the start. Florrie is very sweet and I couldn't help but get attached to her character. Alison is a little snobby and I guess this makes her character a little annoying at times.
Plenty of fun moments but with a few interesting turns along the way that kept me wanting to see how it would all end. There were plenty of likeable characters but also characters that made me want to throw something at them! Jeremy Kyle is mentioned in the book and I can imagine that some of the situations in the book would be perfect for the programme. I thought that it was great as the story built up to finish with the May Ball.
The Corner Shop of Whispers where there are secrets, lies and gossip!
Four stars from me!
Thank you to Debbie Viggiano for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion
Daisy, Alison and Florrie are all neighbours living in a cul de sac in Lower Amblegate. On the surface it is a sleepy little village where not much goes on - Florrie has been trying for a baby, Alison is a bit of a snob and likes to be seen with the right people whereas Daisy is happy with an ordinary life and although so very different to each other they are good friends
All is not as it seems in the village however and it soon becomes apparent that it is actually a hotbed of gossip and scandal! Go to the corner shop if you want to find out more!
Living in a small village myself I loved this book as it is so true - the amount of gossip and scandal is amazing - especially the speed that it is transmitted - great lighthearted read ideal for the beach
Florrie, Daisy and Alison live on the cul-de-sac, and are close friends. Florrie is married to Marcus and has just found out shes pregnant, Daisy is married to Tom and they have 3 children, Daisy is the one that speaks her mind regardless of the consequences. Alison is married to Henry with 1 daughter and she is the snob of the group. Alison is convinced Henrys having an affair, and so the 3 of them set a trap, what could possibly go wrong!!! theres lots of infidelity in this book, This book was funny, and even the parts that were supposed to be serious ended in humour, I really enjoyed this, its the 1st time reading from this author, i will definatly be reading more.

Intelligent humour. I'm a great fan of Debbie Viggiano, and I was eagerly waiting for this new gem, which I thoroughly enjoyed! It's Debbie's trademark irony that lightens up an otherwise harsh and bad reality; very serious matters are treated, as usual, in a very light but never shallow way. As the truth unfolds so does the actual personality of the character. It's Less of a comedy and more of a drama without being heavy. I particularly Jeremy Kyle always blaring in the background providing a masterfully plotted contrast to the real scene. Fantastic read, as usual.
This was a holiday read for me and I did quite enjoy it. It was totally unbelievable but still enjoyable never the less. The only bit I didn’t like was the way Marcus the soon to be ex husband suddenly turned violent and tried to rape is ex wife. Whilst I understand this could happen it felt wrong in what was a light read up until that point. Read on prime reading but would like to read another by this author as I did like the pace and style.
There is good interaction between characters of different classes with some funny one-liners that make for an easy enjoyable read. It was all far fetched fun, except for one disturbing scene of domestic abuse which didn’t really fit in with the light feel of the story in my opinion. Would have scored higher had that not been there. I will definitely check out more by author and she has numerous books free on Kindle Unlimited.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I really wanted to like this book and I was looking forward to reading it however, it wasn't meant to be. It is well written and has some humorous parts but I couldn't find a single character to like and the story was just too over the top for me.
I didn't like this book as well as Viggiano's others, perhaps because of the subject matter; I found it hard to sympathise with the protagonist. There are some gems, though, particularly the stunning Daisy, who deserves a book all to herself, and this quote, which is worthy of a t-shirt: "True friends don't judge each other. Instead, they judge other people. Together."
This book took me by surprise. I was expecting something very lighthearted and chick lit. But there was a point where it was extremely heavy and serious. Despite not being what I had anticipated I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot was good and I loved the main characters. Florrie and Daisy in particular were a great hit with me.
Not my usual kind of story.easy to read and plot easy to follow.OK if you like reading about yummy mummy types who have nothing better to do than have coffee morning and share each others husbands
I really got into it more or less straight away, really good plot twist that kept me gripped and a good ending. Rated it four stars because I do believe it would be good if there was a sequel.
Excellent and quite funny story. It had more twists and turns then a helter skelter but the story made sense all the way through. Entertaining and easy reading it flowed at a good pace. Very much worth a listen/read.
The corner shop of whispers by Debbie Viggiano. It is a very easy read and a real laugh out loud book. It is about 3 neighbours and how their lives intermingle. It has romance and revenge. I loved it. An easy read was just what I needed.
I really liked the characters in this story - don't we all have crazy friends and/or neighbours who enhance/irritate us until we want to kill them but still know how important they are to us?
This is now one of my favorite books! I have never been a fan of true female gossip but this book just kept getting juicier and juicer! I found myself engrossed in every single word!
This audiobook was hilarious. I was giggling out loud the whole time. I finished in under 2 days. Not much swearing or overly crude joking. Just the right amount of silly drama for a fictional novel. Looking forward to more books written by this author.
