Ah, the old fish out of water story...

description

I've been eyeballing this one on Hoopla for a while now because I love mermaids and (shamefully) I love the Twilight books. And this claimed to be a bit of both.
Yay!
So, I was pretty much prepared for it to be a cheesy teen romance filled with angst and fins, and willing to forgive quite a lot when it came to plausibility and such.

description

But this was just...not what I was expecting.
It read very much like a middle school mystery/romance with ugly art, unlikable characters, and clunky (oh-so-clun-ky!) dialogue. If I'm being totally honest, the conversations actually sounded like something I would have expected to read in a book for elementary school-aged kids, but since it's advertised as a teen love story I just had to conclude that it a was poorly written young adult comic.
Ehhh. I wanted to like this so much but, sadly, it was not to be.
*farts*
Oh well.

After-read:

Nice! I enjoyed this even more the second time around. Rtc!

Main review:

This was entirely too short for me and I might have teared up a bit—but we are not talking about that, instead we are going to talk about how much I adore merfolk of all kind, the evil ones, the kind ones or even the more fish than humans ones, they're all pretty great and often remind me that most of the ocean hasn't really be explored. I also have a hyper fixation on selkies — they're so gorgeous 🥰

MER is a graphic novel written by Joelle Sellner, illustrated by Abby Boeh and colorist Julie Scott about merfolk come to land to find their soulmates or to experience having legs. But there is a danger that pulls a human into their gravity at the high school, fate having a heavy hand in their lives.

The art is beautiful, the characters are good and the plot is good too, altogether this is a beyond "good" graphic novel, it's a masterpiece.

I highly recommend his if you love mermaids, or just graphic novels with good plot.

Pretty nice art, interesting storyline, though some more details would have been helpful, the dialogues unfortunately I found kind of dull and unconvincing. 2.5 rounded up to 3 stars.

Mer come to land to find a mate. They can choose to stay and become more human or go back, either alone because their mate is Mer too or because their human mate chose to go with them to Atlantis and become a Mer themselves.

Aryn's mother died recently. Her father only kept a few of her belongings before they moved to Connecticut where Aryn and her sister got a scholarship at a very exclusive school there. While going through her mother's belongings, Aryn finds a necklace and decides to wear it. However, on her first day of school, Aryn loses it and accuses the guy whom her only friend takes a fancy on.

Although full of stereotypes and clichés, Mer was quite enjoyable to read and the art was very cute. I like the mythos created and Sellner's take on mermaids so I'll definitely follow the series when the second volume is released. The insta-love bothered me a bit but, since it was mostly one sided and I guess the mate thing kind of explains why it was so, I got over it. The last scene gives me hope for the next volume, I can't wait for it to come out

Mer is an okay read. The art is amazing, I liked the way it was colored and how it had lots of blues throughout to keep tying it to the sea. However, I found the story a little jumbled up, confusing at times. I wish it was done a little bit better.

Overall this was just okay. The art was really pretty and the color palette was gorgeous. I liked the character designs a ton. However the story felt incredibly rushed and unfinished. I wished the story had been spread out over the course of a few volumes instead of just the one. There was so much more I was curious about regarding the mer and Atlantis.

A graphic novel that combines old elements of tails of merpeople and a whole new idea, but also has the same amount of drama any typical teenage romance novel has. Mer was a quick read with a diverse group of characters, Tressa is the best, but it was a pretty mediocre graphic novel overall. Some of the drama was a bit too cliche for me and I wasn't a fan of the hate to love factor between Aryn and Adrian. Nothing too special but not bad.

I've always loved the legend of Atlantis, and so even though I was less-than-sold on the 'Twilight meets' part of this book's flap copy, I figured I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, the Twilight comparison was a lot more accurate than such pitches tend to be - while the plot wasn't identical, it also just... really didn't feel particularly original or innovative.

As a quick read, I suppose it was fine. (I finished it in about 20 minutes total, while waiting for Chinese takeout.) There's not a lot remarkable going on here, apart from some occasional awkward action scene blocking. Oh, and our supernatural love interest isn't white! Props for that!

Also - this is a personal thing that not everyone will be bothered by - I'm really not sold on the whole 'you can identify your soulmate at age 16' thing. Given that at age 16 I hadn't really admitted that I was attracted to girls, let alone met the first girl I dated... yeah, it just seems really arbitrary for an entire species to decide their lifelong relationships at that age.

I got this one on a whim. I'm such a sucker for mermaids/Atlantis stories. It was an okay graphic novel. It felt more like a comic book to me, because the art was really simple and the characters were very basic. The dialogue was really awkward and forced at times. But I mean, if you find this somewhere and want to read it, go ahead. It'll amuse you for 45 minutes.

The concept of this book was different from the books I've read, so I enjoyed it. The art was cool. I didn't like a few things, but I'd still say it's a good read. Go for it if you are looking for a fun, light read with some interesting things and are okay with some eye rollable stuff.

The art is about the only thing that separates this from a million other YA PNR books. I liked the art, and I liked that there were merfolk. But because the book is set entirely on land, there's very little actual mer content in here, just pretty teens swooning over each other. Neither the plot nor the dialog really deliver anything new. Pleasant, but not memorable.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

MER was a quick read with lovely art, a story that held my attention, but it left me with a number of questions at the end of the story.

One complaint I had is that the story jumped around a little, and sometimes the transitions were a bit jarring. However, it fit how the different threads were being woven together, so maybe just a bit of careful attention is needed while reading. My other issue was that the story was a bit short, and I wish some more time could have been spent on various questions I had.

Otherwise, the art was gorgeous and I enjoyed the storyline. I liked the main character, Aryn and loved the honest depiction of the difficulties of balancing family life with having a social life. The story was creative and unusual in the current gamut of young adult paranormal novels, since mermaids aren't super common, so I liked learning about the mythology the author created.

All in all, MER was a fun read and pretty cute. I would recommend to anybody who likes graphic novels and is looking for something a little different, or anybody who likes mermaids and creative takes on that mythology.

This was okay. Just okay. I really only finished it because I need to reach my reading goal.

The plot moved way to fast, it felt so jumpy. One page she hated a dude and the next she liked him, what?

The only saving grace was that *spoiler* she didn't choose to leave her family in the end, thank god.

Recommended for those who like mermaids, fantasy graphic novels, and instalove.

I was very intrigued by the idea of this book, and it started in an exciting manner. Unfortunately from then on both the dialogue and the action grew extremely stilted, with characters acting more as props and less like complex human beings (or mer).

"I know what you are."
"Vegan?"
My very first Negalley read! I picked this one, because a) graphic novel and b) mermaids! I thought it would be an easy read and I was mostly right.

Mer tells the story of Aryn and Adrian. Aryn and Adrian are both new to town. Aryn has moved to town because her mother has recently passed away from cancer. Adrian is from "Atlanta" which is really just code for Atlantis. He's a Mer on his way to becoming full merman as soon as he finds his mate, which - not really a spoiler - is Aryn. It's a pretty basic, predictable story. Adrian falls in love with Aryn as soon as he lays eyes on her, but all sorts of things get in the way. Typical teenage drama, overprotective fathers, stepmothers. You know the drill.

This had SO MUCH potential. It really did. I think if it laid off some of the young adult cliches it would have been a lot better. Even with the cliches (seriously I rolled my eyes so many times) it was overall not a terrible read.

Things I liked:
+ Tressa. She was, without a doubt, the best part of the story.
+ Anastasia. She was a little cliche, yes, but overall I liked how she was.
+ THE END. I loved the end. Not the actual end of the story, though I liked that, too, but after it was all finished. There were drawings and a bibliography/further reading, little blurbs about mermaids and such. That was a nice touch.
+ I've never heard of Rusalkas before but now I'm super interested and most go do all the research.
+ I liked that they weren't your typical mermaids. They were different, new for me. I wish there'd been a little more in depth talk about them and Atlantis.

Things I disliked:
- Aryn. She didn't really have an actual personality. We get random bits and pieces that never really go anywhere. Like she apparently wrote an article for the school magazine. This seemed to be thrown in just to advance the plot, though. She's a very angry teenager at the beginning. But, she's a teenager and her mom passed a few months ago so I'll excuse her that. She is fiery throughout the whole thing, so that's nice. She flips off the popular girl in the first few pages and has no problem attacking people and telling them off so I did enjoy the consistency.
- Julia. I thought she'd be my favorite at the beginning. But everything that went down with her and Aryn and Adrian just... it was dumb. I understand getting emotional and jumping to conclusions but it was just ugh. Overdone and cliche.
- Which brings me to: girl hate. Girls hating on girls. It's 2017 but apparently this is still a thing.
- & slut shaming. It's like fake slut shaming. There's an incident where everyone thinks Aryn stole another girls man so she's shunned.
- Aryn x Adrian. Or just Adrian in general. He totally creeps on her (the description did warn me that it was twilight meets the legend of atlantis) through her fence. there was absolutely no point to the scene.

So yes, so more negatives than positives, but once you get past that, it's not too bad. It's very light and a pretty easy read. I think if it was cleaned up a little bit it would be greatly improved. And even if it wasn't, I'd probably recommend it to some of my younger friends. Early high school or late middle school (though there is some cussing.)

3/5 stars.

I recieved this as an unedited arc via Netgalley, but this does not alter my opinion.

So, although this wasn't a terrible graphic novel, I had some problems with it that just overall hurt my enjoyment of it.
The first major issue was the fact that I couldn't really understand how to read it at first. I think it would have been helpful to have directional arrows every so often, like a manga might, to keep you on the right track. The main reason I found issues with the direction of reading was because I found that there was a lot of illustrated boxes on one page, making it unclear for me on how it should be read. This is an issue that may just affect me, but I thought I should mention it nevertheless.

The next problem I stumbled upon was that everything progressed way too quickly, causing me (right up until the end) not having made connections with characters. Sure, I felt a bit sad when certain things happened, but that emotion didn't run deep or last long.

It was predictable from the start, with a fair amount of plot holes. I found the realtionships in particular to happen too quickly, especially with the turn of events right at the begining of ''act 3''. I still don't know why it's not regular chapters... The act style serves no purpose to me. I felt that I had missed chuncks of storyline because relationships seemed to evolve so quickly, like I was missing major events.

The conversation of the mer people felt really stunted and didn't flow very well. To me this did give me the impression that perhaps English wouldn't have been their first language (as they would use full words such as ''I am'', ''I cannot'', as opposed to the quicker, more convenient ''I'm'' or ''I can't'' that other characters would say), but regardless, it still broke up my reading flow a lot.

Overall, unfortunately this book just didn't feel very unique or special and wasn't executed very well. As this is an unedited arc, perhaps some of the smaller issues can be resolved but as for the lacking of general entertainment, I don't think that can easily be fixed, I'm sad to say.

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! ^^

I was a bit wary with the tagline being 'Twilight meets Atlantis', but I am a sucker for mermaids and graphic novels are always quick reads so I figured I would give it a shot. First of all the art is gorgeous. I really like the colors and the character design so it was definitely very visually stimulating. The plot was definitely a little bit Twilight-esque, but nowhere near as ...well, awful. . Overall it was a fun, quick story but still a little bit juvenile for my tastes. I think I would have really enjoyed it when I was in high school though.

You know what? I ended up enjoying this. It was full of stereotypes and some parts made me roll my eyes, but it was still a very light, pleasant read with a very nice artwork, the colors are vibrant and the illustrations are cute.
image: description
I was a bit puzzled at the beginning with all one-sided insta-love, but it got explained afterward, so, who wants to start to read it, don't get mad on that thing. :)
I got a bit disappointed with some things that were not properly explained, I do not want to spoil anything, but there were some characters about which I still have a lot of questions.
BUT
The way this novel ended makes me think that there would definitely be the second book. Maybe I get my answers there.

I have always enjoyed mermaid stories, and in this book i like how there are other magical sea creatures too. I am definitely going to pickup the second volume, and hoping for more magical sea creatures to show up
Although, the love angle in this story is a little too instant, and feel could have been done a lot more better, maybe giving the story a depth.
Also, it was a little too predictive ... until the end blew me away..
But....
1. I loved Aryn's and Adrian's Character.
2. I loved the whole shell in the necklace thing, and i guess that could be such a nice book merchandize to have.
3. I absolutely adored the illustrations and the coloring.
4. I like how there are illustrations and information about merfolk at the end of the copy, for nerds like me :)

I got this on netgally in exchange for a review,

The premise of the story is an interesting one, and I'm a sucker for all that American High School drama (sue me!). At times I was confused by sections of the plot, but the author brought me back to the main theme. Hopefully some of that will be cleared up by the time the finished product is published, if not by the next issue. Which brings me to the next issue with this, is it going to be a series or a one-off graphic novel? The ending was vague at best, which I hope means there is gooing to be other novels. This has the potential to grow into a great series, it has room to flesh out and ther is a world we have yet to explore (spoiler but maybe not: Atlantis!). I am looking forward to learning more about the mer and their world.

Although the art was interesting and colored well, the story did not stand up to it. Lackluster plot and poor character interactions made for a predictable read. The inclusion of the mer character designs in the back was interesting but only highlighted how little we saw mer characters in mer forms in the book.

The story captures your attention right from the beginning. With a brutal intro, I couldn’t stop reading on and enjoyed Mer very much. The story concept contains a very cute idea and the artwork was quite my taste. However, there wasn’t a natural flow between the change of sceneries and I missed the time & place stamps I’m so used to in comics. But bear in mind, I just read a non-final copy so here's hoping they’ll change that before the final edition.

In my opinion Joelle Sellner did a wonderful job writing this story and if you enjoy reading fast paced comics without having to wait too long for action scenes, then you should definitely pick up Mer!

3.5/5 stars. Rounded to 4 stars based on Goodreads rating.
Mer is a good graphic novel. It has great art and a captivating story. The story is great for a quick read. I liked that at the end of the novel the artists and the author offered more information about the characters' design and the myths behind mer people.
Although, the story felt rushed and there is not enough character development. It feels like the characters are jumping from one emotional/psychological stage to another. Because of this, the storyline does not flow and it is rather... chunky... if this is an actual word. :D
Before publishing, the writing does need some polishing to make the characters' dialogue to flow also.
This graphic novel has a lot of potential if it is going to have more instalments. (Let us hope that that is the case based on the ending.) We need to learn more about the mer people and their world.
Overall, this graphic novel does not have something we have not seen before; although, it has the power to captivate you. Which, in my opinion, that is a good thing.
I am looking forward for the finished product and the possible next instalments.
If you love graphic novels, good art, mermaids, young adult, and romance, this might be your cup of tea.
This also reminded me a lot of the TV shows H2O - Just Add Water and Mako Mermaids - an H2O Adventure.

This is my sole opinion.

I would like say thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mer, as is rather obvious by the title, is about a girl who discovers a world of mermen that she has no idea exists. This was a quick read; I downloaded and finished it on the same day. One of the first things that struck me was that the characters and plot felt very much like a YA story line. This is not a bad thing, but most of the comics/graphic novels on Netgalley are aimed at the adult audience, and so I wasn't expecting this to be an exception.

This also influenced the fact that their were quite a few cliches/tropes in this book and that the plot did feel a little rushed, as if the premise needed more development. At times, the dialogue and actions of the characters felt forced, and the author definitely needs to look over their writing again so it can flow smoothly.

I did enjoy the general plot and characters however, and soon after starting, I was invested in the story and hoping everyone would get out safely. The ending, in my opinion, is a little ambiguous, so I'm not sure of there is a sequel or if the story ends like it does. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't mind the art style. I liked the written background on mermaids and sirens and the sketches at the end, outlining the design process involved for illustrating the characters.

3.5 stars rounded down

I got the advanced copy of this graphic novel from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

This graphic novel is about Merpeople and their customs and of course someone who wants to kill them. We have Mermaids on land in this story. Merpeople come to earth when they are 16 years or so old to see if they can find someone they love or 'find their mates'. And then they either return to Atlantis or they become humans slowly. It was a nice story with teenagers included you can imagine love triangles and school dramas. And then there is the villain a mer witch who wants to eat the hearts of Mers to stay young. Well it's also the story of lost love and yearning and hopeful end.

Well I sign off and you guys keep on reading.

I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
