Please stop. Stop writing these.

I can't stop reading them, and I want to so badly! The romance has hit critical level of absurdity, the deus ex machina plot devices have stretched too thin, and I can't take it, it isn't good anymore, and it isn't making me happy to read.

Earth Valor
Earthrise, Book 6
By: Daniel Arenson
Narrated by: Jeffrey Kafer
The last book was a bit depressing with so much going on and so much loss. I was hoping for a book with a better battle, higher hopes, anything to keep me wanting to read these books. But this was just as bad. Gory, sadness, no hope, endless battles with no possibilities of winning.
The narrator was excellent!

Series stinks.

Whiny, tearful, vomity, bllshtty, etc.

“ Marco covered his ears and closed his eyes. He tried to take deep breaths, to ignore the noise as best he could, and he thought of Kemi. Of her smile. How they would walk through the cemetery together, the last green space in Toronto. But even those thoughts turned sour, and again he saw her reaching to him, tears in her eyes, telling him she'd be away for ten years, maybe more. What are you doing now, Kemi? he thought. Are you thinking of me too?”

Again - An honest review of Earth Valor (Earthrise #6)
Again! I've been scammed again! Or at least that is what runs through my head when I get a series and decide to go through it from start to finish only to find out the author short took short cuts and keeps replaying the same theme over and over again. I'll mark the parts that are spoilers.

First, this is the 6th book in the series and it is obvious the author is either using an editor who does not care or the cheapest service he can find to pump out his books. I'm so underwhelmed. And to top it off, it's just book three rehashed a little bit (well, not really, but close enough). Let's prey for a new idea, but I'm sure that will be disappointing as well.

This story picks up where the 5th book left off, and we have to shake our heads. So, with no further ado, don't read between the marks if you hate spoilers.

Spoiler Alert
So, the crew land (aka crash) on what they believe is Earth of old and reek havoc. Marco actually shoots a unicorn (yes, you got it right) and carries the dead carcass on his back to return to the ship. The group eat it and talk. They get attacked by werewolves at night who happen to be children, get given moral choices when seeing food being transported in automated rail cars, and throw a person out a window (really, I can't make this up)!

It is all a test of the ghost fleet (come on, really). Yes, they wanted to know if humans were really good or not. Then they rush to their aid. But the ships they have are not as strong as thought. And through this all we have Addy back on the planet fighting in a resistance. The marauders are go from destroyers and near invincible to almost laughable kill-able aliens. Stop, please, you're killing me. And when the ghost fleet meets the marauders in space they are whipped to the point the majority of them want to go home to lick their wounds. This leaves our heroes with only a few ships to take to Earth where the majority of the enemy sits in wait.

The end of the battle they confront the ruling marauder and low and behold, he is a created being of the scum from the first three books! Really?

It turns out the scum took DNA from Marco and cross bread him with themselves to come up with this mutated form. Then, in four years they created millions of them (bullshit alarm went off). The head marauder calls Marco Dad.

End Spoiler
It kills me when things are put in place because they're convenient. And the author uses time dilation to explain why it takes so long for the ghost fleet and Marco to get to Earth. Six months for the fleet and one year on Earth. I really think that's a cop out. Figure it out next time.

All in all the action is fast, but the romance parts need lots of work. Reminds me of Star Wars Episode Two! Really? Yes, that clumsy and horrible.

After all the repetition, errors, and crap, the plot is solid and action interesting enough. Gets a whole one star from this reader.

Good but could be better.

This far into a series I am fairly hooked on the world-building, characters, or plot. In this case it's all about the characters. The plot is lame. The world-building is good, but rather shallow..the character studies have a depth that is very appealing.

Note to author: I expected so much more with Kemi. After such a build up, to just fizzle left much to be desired. Addy would have far more and much more graphically to say.

The sixth entry of Daniel Arenson’s Earthrise series opens with the ship, the Marilyn, traveling through a black hole, at whose other side its crew encounters a world still stuck in medieval times with human-appearing inhabitants, giving them the theory that they had been thrown back in time. Kemi’s mechanical hand has damage, and the group kills a unicorn for want of its meat, due to having not eaten for a while. Marco continues to lament his relationship with Addy, given their separation since living on the derelict human colony Haven.

In the meantime, Marco’s adoptive sister Addy guides her human resistance convoy through the snowy mountains of Northern Ontario, while HDF leader Brigadier-General James Petty keeps a lookout for the fabled Ghost Fleet that Marco had been searching for in prior books. Earth’s retaliation against the marauders begins with a bombing of planet Mars, with several battles following including one in the atmosphere above Earth, after which comes the ultimate showdown with the aliens, their leader Malphas making a den where Marco’s Earth home in Toronto used to be, another alien, Nefitis, afterward wanting human blood.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed the box set of the first six Earthrise books, and would gladly be willing to read more of it in the future, given its endearing characters and storyline that never becomes convoluted, given the relatively-limited number of parallel plotlines. There are even occasional reminders of what the marauders look like, not to mention a few decent twists later on in the book. Granted, it’s not the most original science-fiction story, given the central goal of saving the Earth from alien invaders, but I would definitely recommend it to those who enjoyed its precursors.

Dark military science fiction at its finest.

Trigger warnings: graphic violence from aliens towards humans - nobody will be spared

This series is very good. Daniel Arenson is extremely poetic and knows how to captivate the readers. His prose is just right - not too long and not too short. The aliens in books 4, 5, and 6 make the aliens from the previous books look tame in comparison. And at the end, there's a cliffhanger about another species of aliens in book 7 and after. I kept buying the next book in the series before finishing the previous one. That's how good this is.

The characters are extremely well developed. However, when Addy was gone Lailani sounded just like her and joked about food a lot, whereas in previous books she had been more serious.

The love triangle trope is so cliche ... it's getting repetitive because each book builds relationships up and then tears them down.

Be prepared for the ending though. There's so much death in this series that I had to take a break before reading book 7. But don't worry. It slows down as the series progresses. You will deal with the main character's PTSD so this can be difficult to read. I wouldn't detract stars just for how the book makes me feel though, because that's a personal feeling. Others have given this series a negative review for making them feel bad, but that's kind of the point. This is war, and the author writes extremely vivid.

But please, put some trigger warnings up, Mr. Arenson.

The constant bantering between Marco and Addy continues. Addy’s character really drives me nuts, but her heart is in the right place. The struggle for Earth continues as Einav, Marco and Addy make their way to earth in the starship Genghis Khan, along with a new member of the team, Hrunk, and 30 starships determined to stop and kill the hydrians once and for all.

Einav has a plan and as they fly closer to Earth, they are astonished at how the hydrians have taken over the planet. They are more determined than ever to wipe them out and miners from another planet also join them as they head toward the North Pole. Einev’s plan is to nuke the north pole, thus destroying the hydra lord. The fight continues and the enemy persists, attempting to kill all humans. Ninanzu is larger than ever.

Will they defeat the Hydrians and Ninanzu? New enemies, old friends, new threats, lost friends - will they win the battle or have to run from Earth? Will the humans will survive? Of course I won’t tell, because you will just have to read it and find what happens. I had to keep reading until I read the entire book. You’ll love it, the twists and turns, along with a few surprises.

The first several books in this series are not bad--a little black-and-white (you can spot pretty early who's going to live and who's going to die, classic horror movie rules), but overall not bad.

As we get past the first six or so books, though, the writing becomes progressively worse, almost as if the author wanted to try and tailor his prose to be more accommodating to 12-year-olds, even as he continues to display some pretty adult themes (sex, violence, even rape threats).

The characters never really seem to learn anything, they continue to agonize over the same issues, they continue to have the same internal conversations, and by about the twelfth book, everybody in the inner circle has slept with everybody else, and are constantly revisiting every decision they've ever made, even if they just made that decision a few pages ago.

My enjoyment of the series has progressively declined with each successive book, to the point that I will not buy anything further in this series.

Captivating.. following the footsteps of Asimov!
I'm a fan of Asimov.. even all his autobiographies! Daniel.. my new favorite.. I couldn't put this series down! I always thought sci_fi reading was second to dragon fantasy. Daniel's way of capturing the reader's attention and holding it.. what an artist! Incredible.. there are so many books of his left to read .. Goodie!!!! Well .. enough reviewing.. I have the next book to attack and cause me hours of enjoyment .. so .. stop reading my review.. buy one of Daniel Arenson's books.. and you'll soon be smiling and rushing to write him an awesome review - this way we're not keeping all the Theater of the Mind to ourselves ;p

Earth Valor: Earthrise Book 6 by Daniel Arenson

The marauders, vicious alien predators, brought us to our knees.

They destroyed our fleets. They burned our cities. They butchered millions.

Across the ruins of Earth, we rise in rebellion. In the depths of space, we seek allies.

And our last warship prepares for one final battle.

It's a time for heroes. A time to show our human pride. Because Earth is our home. Earth is our birthright. Earth is eternal.

Sentimental

Getting a bit fed up with all the hand holding hippy sentimentality that is becoming a bigger part of this series. The fight scenes are still good but where previous books were of comrades in arms and their lives it has become a big old love in among the main five characters
And surely a Unicorn has foals not cubs, yes folks there are Unicorns.
Disappointing after the previous books.

Just another bug war!

I really hate leaving a series unfinished but this is just one space monster after another and the lead_in to the next book just seems to promise more of the same. There are too many books to read out there to spend the time reading the same story again and again. Sorry Daniel, but l will have to stop here. I liked the story but it probably should ended here.

Earth Valor

Earth Valor, number 6 does not let you down. You wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t already gone through 1-5, The series continues to build a world filled with fear, death and overwhelming destruction. The action scenes are so 3 dimensional with complex activity in all directions. I have read a great deal of Daniels work and Earth Rise is a show stopper.

The story got jaded by constantly & unrealistically beating the odds of survival. I will be stopping at book #6 and will pretend the last chapter did not exist so that they all lived happily ever after.

Predictable

Predictable book with some interesting opportunities ultimately and unfortunately squandered. Ideological overtones permeate the story seemingly driving character motivation far more than logic or common sense.

Repetitive at times, but fun and engrossing at other times. I will be stopping with the 6th boom as the first six books have most likely covered what is in the next three.
