Well-written. It's not often I find an "informational" book that I literally read the entire thing in one sitting (cuz I did... in the library... all of it). It covers all the basics and goes into detail to help you both understand for the really true beginners, and expand your knowledge for the partial beginner birders (like myself).
I read the updated edition of this--it's a hugely helpful primer on how to bird. She thinks of everything--from a discussion of optics to numerous chapters on identification (including a discussion comparing guidebooks), even a chapter on how to prep for a birding trip (what to wear, what to bring, what to expect). Always encouraging, never condescending, sometimes humorous. I feel less like a noob already. :)
A quick, topical guide and introduction to birding. As a complete novice, I found the book helpful. This book was the only book on the topic at my local library and I began the hobby with it.
Needless to say, the publication date should advise readers as to the outdated nature of the technological aspects of the book; using cassettes/CDs for bird listening, cameras, and the like. Regardless, a noble entry point with excellent illustrations to convey the point.
