Aging population is a global problem. The problem is a bit more serious in China due to several factors: The popopulation is aging more rapidly than other developed countries; the working population is much smaller due to 36 years of one child policy; China is still struggling to increase its average GNP while the population ages; and China is the only country where seniors would be numbered in the billions. This book is a collection of personal interviews of China's empty- nesters. The picture described is not a pretty one. Problems they face are basically in the following categories: Caretakers, health, disability, loneliness, estranged children, death of spouse, finance. The problems are more evident in the countries than cities since farming is still the main industry and physical work is impossible with the aging whose children basically all abandoned ship to seek other careers in cities. This is the best book about the aging population I've read, in both Chinese and English. I highly recommend it for Chinese readers.
