The world prepares for war. Creatures out of a nightmare press south. And only a few will be able to stop it.
Roelle leads the Magi north to discover the secrets of the northern warriors known as the Antrilii. What she discovers forces her to question the role the Magi play in the world as she begins to realize how far they have drifted from their Founders. Rumors out of the north are much worse than she could ever imagine and her Mage Warriors might be key to stopping a threat the world hasn't seen in a thousand years.
Jakob has reached Avaneam with the mysterious trunk only to learn that his journey has just begun. What he discovers in the Unknown Lands will be the key to the upcoming battle, if only he can survive it. His visions continue and Jakob learns there is more to them—and him—than he had known. Can he understand his growing abilities in time?
For the love of the book gods why do authors continue to do this ? The first book had the perfect amount of pov characters why add more in the second book they were not even good point of view characters. It's a waste of my reading keep to the main characters and what is happening with them and I may actually find out what the hell is going on. Right rant over so onto jackob what the hell is he I still have no idea, yes he is a descendent of the original uniter but he has the power of the gods/beings what is going on ? I'm moving on to the next book to try and find out but I doubt I will find much out until the very end of the story.
85%, as the previous one. This one goes way deeper into the background while also bringing back some old faces from the Teralin series (the Antrilii). Jakob gets less appearance in this book, as the chest was brought to where Endric had intended and Jakob with his two fellows will spend most of the time there, learning about the past - Jakob's visions are what reveals the most of the backstory, with at least some explanation given by the end. Roelle gets much more spotlight as she heads north to find what's going on - in a move that sends her to help the Antrilii fight their ancient enemy and learn something more about her background while there. Meanwhile, Endric and Alriyn are trying to keep things together in Vasha while the Desmahne are seen infiltrating the city and the magi are still trying to instruct their delegates without having a real plan. Raime is seen scheming in the background, though it's likely he'll be more directly involved in the future. --- The book also gives some hint at the timeline of this and Teralin series, the gap being hinted to be over 25 years. --- Longer commentary on my blog
Jakob has found out that he must unite the people against a great evil. His powers are growing and as far as he knows there is only him a mage and one other tasked with such an enormous feat. After all there is great ancient evil afoot and a war brewing as well as for an even greater evil for which he's yet aware of. He's got an old sword for which was his great grand fathers and he is developing some powers that he's developing. A daunting task that the 3 aren't sure if they are up to.
Great read some great and interesting battles. This is a little different than other fantasy fiction books I have read and will have to admit I'm liking the series so far.
Somewhat typical of the middle book of a trilogy, this book was rather slow and I had to force my way through it. Holmberg is an author I really like, but this trilogy isn't my favorite. I've had a difficult time understanding the group of protagonists. They are the Magi and they're sworn to uphold peace and they are also pacifists, although they use Denraen (who are soldiers) to protect them. Actually, I find much in these books confusing and at conflict with itself. I still have book 3 ahead of me and since I like Holmberg I'm going to read clear to the end. I'm hoping that it will be worth the time.
Soo it’s a decent story line but I don’t know if the author wants to be George RR Martin or what but there is starting to be way to many character story lines... I feel the main two characters were supposed to be Jakob and Roelle, but they spend so much time away from Jakob that I have no idea what is even happening with him by time I get back to him so that gets pretty annoying...
No jackob in this book, considering that he is the only character I am interested in this feels very boring. The magic system is not explained at all and it seems so boring. The reader has to read 300 pages to advance the plot a tiny bit. I feel I am reading a telenovella and the worst is that the end I don't even get a satisfying ending. I am halfway book 3 and still no jackob, poor jackob.
I was doubtful at first, in starting to read a new author’s books, but I have been greatly surprised. D.K has a lot of series and if all are nearly as good as this one has been, well, I may just blow my goal away on Goodreads, just reading his stuff!
The story is very interesting but I have had several issues with grammar and other errors throughout the series. But it's good enough for me to complete it.

Can he understand his growing abilities in time? I read it in one day. It has characters and a story that will grab and hols on to you. I usually don't like a book that jumps from one place to antoher but this one has such storng charaters, it doesn't matter which one the author is righting about. It will hold you no matter where the book takes you. If you don't read this seriers than it is your lose. A GREAT SERIES AND GREAT READING EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so addicted to books by this author. Be aware that once you start a series by DK Holmberg, you won't be able to stop. It takes all my self control not to read all day. This is a great read. I loved that it is clean. I won't read anything that isn't. So far he has not let me down...for that reason alone he is worth my support...but he is also a very good author and gives me thoughts about good and evil and how we must strive to do what's right..not what is easy.
Good story arc, good characters, sometimes the shifting point of view is distracting though. Would have liked more of Jakob in this one. Let's bring on book 3.
