London 1600. When an attempt is made on Queen Elizabeth’s life, Serjeant Noah Ames races to her rescue, then sets out to identify the culprit among a band of foreigners who’ve newly arrived from the Continent to join with the seditious Lord Essex. In the course of his investigation, Noah uncloaks an unmitigated reign of evil that has resulted in the murders of kings, queens, and religious minorities ... and which now threatens Noah’s life for reasons no one would ever suspect. Will he pay the ultimate price for forgetting that the past is never past?
England 1600 and when an attempt is made on the Queen's life, Serjeant Noah Ames comes to her rescue, and then to investigate and determne the culprits. The guilty party of which are probably in the group that have arrived in England to join Lord Essex's group. I enjoyed the story and liked the characters.
This book unfortunately does not fulfill the promise of the last one. There is barely enough story here to fill the pages. I spent a great deal of time waiting for something, anything, to happen. I made through the whole book, which I won't do for bad books, but not because I was carried away by the plot. It doesn't feel like 1600. The pistols worked too easily. Everyone had a bed. But even with all of that, I'm looking forward to the next installment. I continue to hope that the author will catch up with the promise of the writing. These are just on the cusp of being wonderful books.
