Betty Neels

Evelyn Jessy "Betty" Neels was born on September 15, 1910 in Devon to a family with firm roots in the civil service. She said she had a blissfully happy childhood and teenage years.(This stood her in good stead later for the tribulations to come with the Second World War). She was sent away to boarding school, and then went on to train as a nurse, gaining her SRN and SCM, that is, State Registered Nurse and State Certificate of Midwifery.

In 1939 she was called up to the Territorial Army Nursing Service, which later became the Queen Alexandra Reserves, and was sent to France with the Casualty Clearing Station. This comprised eight nursing sisters, including Betty, to 100 men! In other circumstances, she thought that might have been quite thrilling! When France was invaded in 1940, all the nursing sisters managed to escape in the charge of an army major, undertaking a lengthy and terrifying journey to Boulogne in an ambulance. They were incredibly fortunate to be put on the last hospital ship to be leaving the port of Boulogne. But Betty's war didn't end there, for she was posted to Scotland, and then on to Northern Ireland, where she met her Dutch husband. He was a seaman aboard a minesweeper, which was bombed. He survived and was sent to the south of Holland to guard the sluices. However, when they had to abandon their post, they were told to escape if they could, and along with a small number of other men, he marched into Belgium. They stole a ship and managed to get it across the Channel to Dover before being transferred to the Atlantic run on the convoys. Sadly he became ill, and that was when he was transferred to hospital in Northern Ireland, where he met Betty. They eventually married, and were blessed with a daughter. They were posted to London, but were bombed out. As with most of the population, they made the best of things.

When the war finally ended, she and her husband were repatriated to Holland. As his family had believed he had died when his ship went down, this was a very emotional homecoming. The small family lived in Holland for 13 years, and Betty resumed her nursing career there. When they decided to return to England, Betty continued her nursing and when she eventually retired she had reached the position of night superintendent.

Betty Neels began writing almost by accident. She had retired from nursing, but her inquiring mind had no intention of vegetating, and her new career was born when she heard a lady in her local library bemoaning the lack of good romance novels. There was little in Betty's background to suggest that she might eventually become a much-loved novelist.

Her first book, Sister Peters in Amsterdam, was published in 1969, and by dint of often writing four books a year, she eventually completed 134 books. She was always quite firm upon the point that the Dutch doctors who frequently appeared in her stories were *not* based upon her husband, but rather upon an amalgam of several of the doctors she met while nursing in Holland.

To her millions of fans around the world, Betty Neels epitomized romance. She was always amazed and touched that her books were so widely appreciated. She never sought plaudits and remained a very private person, but it made her very happy to know that she brought such pleasure to so many readers, while herself gaining a quiet joy from spinning her stories. It is perhaps a reflection of her upbringing in an earlier time that the men and women who peopled her stories have a kindliness and good manners, coupled to honesty and integrity, that is not always present in our modern world. Her myriad of fans found a warmth and a reassurance of a better world in her stories, along with characters who touched the heart, which is all and more than one could ask of a romance writer. She received a great deal of fan mail, and there was always a comment upon the fascinating places she visited in her stories. Quite often those of her fans fortunate enough to visit Ho

A quick review/recap for a short (novella-length) book, one of Betty's last, published in 2001 (the year of Betty's death, at 92 or so--how wonderful that she was still writing heartwarming stories that still showcased her skill and ability to connect with readers despite so many social changes since she began writing). Betty worked this shorter format well--with a briskness characteristic of her later works, the charm and detail of her stories is preserved but the pacing avoids the "what? how are there 40 pages left?" moments of some of her novels, where she typically filled the word counts with late-breaking Big Misunderstandings and, typically, a heroine flit and a hero follow.

It's a typical Neels, with a sort of "shorthand" approach that I've noted in other later-Neels reviews, with a briskness that keeps the story moving (but perhaps lacks some of the intensity and drama and stage-setting of her earlier stories). It's a "rescue the waif" Cinderella tale, with our heroine, Loveday West, getting fired (and quite a shiner) from her selfish, idle, snobby employer, for whom she acts as a kind of social secretary (a "companion" just a little too anachronistic, even for Betty, in 2001, I guess!).

When our hero, Rich British Doctor Andrew Fforde (an extra F for Fabulous?), sees the young lady he met so briefly as a stand-in for our Horrible Employer's regular doctor and vaguely pitied, sporting a black eye, he makes a point of finding out her living situation and, needing a temporary replacement for his own redoubtable secretary, the wonderfully named "Miss Priss" (hee), he offers Loveday the job.

We have hero POV in this one, so we're left in no doubt of Andrew's growing feelings for Loveday. Loveday, equally attracted, has no such insight, though, and assumes that the lovely visitor Andrew receives at his office is his girlfriend . She's also sidetracked by his charming, shallow cousin's interest in her, going on a few dates with Charles (including to Brighton! We Betty readers know that means ignoble intentions), who is careful to only take the mousy young lady he's amusing himself with while his fiancee is away, to places where he won't run into his posh friends.

This slightly tangled web is unknotted pretty quickly and with minimal angst, with only the doctor's uncertainty about whether the age difference between them (he's 40ish? to her 24) is too great.

Well, it's not! Andrew reunites Loveday with an unknown auntie (one of Betty's typically ascerbic, old-fashioned, but warm-hearted good relatives) while he works to win his lady love. And so he does, in a charming finish to a charming book that may be low on drama, tension, and angst but is a warm fire on a cool day, with the types of secondary characters and critters who fill in all the nooks and crannies.

This was a sweet short story, a new Betty for me - I didn't think there were any more out there I hadn't read! When we meet our heroine, Loveday West, she is slaving away (literally) as the personal assistant/secretary/lady's maid, etc. to a spoiled society type named Mimi. The handsome Dr. Andrew Fforde makes a house call when the vicious Mimi suffers a head cold and is impressed with Loveday's calm demeanor and quiet dignity.

The usual Betty chance meeting to bring the H/h together again worked well for me - Loveday clashes with her nasty boss, who wallops her (catfight in a Betty!), forcing Loveday to quit. When she seeks medical attention for the nasty black eye, Andrew sees her and asks her to come work as his temporary receptionist. Interesting twist here, instead of the usual other woman there's another man - Andrew's spoiled, flirty young cousin Charles.

Being a Betty, you know there will be a happy ending, usually somewhat rushed and here more than usual - I forgive that in a short story, though, especially when we are allowed such delightful glimpses inside our charming H's head. He falls in love first and is concerned about the 14-year age difference, but all comes right in the end - a delightful, quick and charming read for a rainy evening!

This is more novella length than a normal Betty but oh what a sweet story! I loved it. It’s a bit of a Sense and Sensibility story with Loveday as Marianne but much simplified. And such a delightful ending!

I enjoyed this little book, it was pleasantly non-offensive - great for a light summer read. The characters were well enough written for the length of the book. The narrative was well written and thought-through. The narrative voice was a little jumpy and at times it was difficult to know if the narrator was speaking or if it was free-indirect speech. Nonetheless it was enjoyable.

It was a cute one and I haven't read any of Betty Neels in a long time. So it got me to smile throughout the book.
A doctor, a simple nurse and just one look and they got weaved into the thread of love - it's what Mills & Boon is all about. Cute

Good book. It didn't drag out as long as a Betty Neels book usually does.

This one reminded me of why I never liked the Betty Neels novels I snuck out of my grandmother's bookshelf at Thanksgiving. The heroine is just kind of a lump; Neels very unwisely gives us the hero's perspective; there is no plot and everything is boring.

4 stars. a lovely sweet novella length story. minimal angst but much of that "handsome thoughtful doc saves the waif and falls for her" goodness.

Loveday (24), a plain Jane with no family in the world and no qualifications, works as a girl Friday to a thankless and cruel boss. she meets dr andrew fforde (38) when the boss lady says she is ill, but he doesnt really notice her. shoetly afterwards, Loveday suddenly finds herself fired and punched in the eye by the horrid woman.

She ends up in a bedsit and desperately looking for work before her savings run out, but the black eye hinders her efforts. when she goes to hospital for the troublesome black eye, Dr fforde notices her there and, recognising her, resolves to check up on her when he is less busy.

when his secretary suddenly must care for her sick mom and his pretty temp secretary is useless, he hires Loveday to do the job, saying he needs a plain girl who won't be a distraction to him and his patients!

SPOILERS AHEAD

At first neither has feelings they recognise towards the other, though Loveday does feel mortified by being too forward with him sometimes and feels snubbed, so she clamps down and presents a cool demeanour. she is determined to work hard to repay his kindness and the generous salary which comes with a flat above the office her her and her rescue cat.

then she meets his young cousin, a fickle young man who pays her attention just for the fun of amusing himself. loveday naively thinks he likes her and might be falling for her and lives for the evenings when he takes her out. Andrew notices her brightening up and feels uneasy about it. the cousin grows bored with Loveday and decides to ditch her but doesnt even tell her. that same evening, Andrew sees them together and Loveday confesses to him that she's been dating his young cousin. she waits for thr cousins to call her all week and pines. seeing this, andrew tells her the cousin is getting married in 2 weeks time..that he was amusing himself while his fiancee was in america.

loveday is shocked. she runs up to weep in her flat in private. andrew comes up.to comfort her and distract her by taking her to his house for a meal and to play with his injured rescue dog.

he proceeds to watch over her and realises he has fallen in love with her. but he worries she is too young for him and that she isn't over the cousin yet.

as he continues to be kind to her and get her to spend time at his house with his rescue dog etc, he finds out more about her like the fact she has an aunt she has never dared get in touch with because she's worried the aunt doesn't want to know her.

when his secretary's mom dies and the secretary is due to come back to work and to live in the flat that Loveday is living in, andrew worries that Loveday will be upset and heartbroken to lose her stability. he wants to marry her but worries its too soon for her and he wants her to make up her own mind about what she wants.. he seeks out her aunt and builds bridges so loveday will have a home to go to.

when he breaks the job news to loveday she is devastated, but mostly devastated that she won't see him again. she realises she's fallen in love with him. but she thinks he doesn't even notice her, and also there is a nice beautiful older woman who comes to see him sometimes and who has phoned and left messages for him, and she thinks he is going to marry that lady.

he promises he will find her a job and asks her to go to her aunt in the meantime. she does because she has no other options but is gutt3d she may never see him again. he drives her to thebaunt who lives far away in rural dartmoor. she is heartbroken watching him drive away.

ENDING SPOILERS

a week later he can't help but come and see her. spotting him, she flings herself into his arms. he confesses he loves her and she does too. a sweet ending.

CONCLUSION

overall this was a sweet gentle story with the mildest touch of angst. it was short and easy to read and kept me entertained and turning the pages with no boring bits. it doesn't have the depth of other Betty books which is why I have 4 stars, but it is very good for a novella length tale. him falling in love did feel ever so slightly sudden but I can forgive that in a novella as it made sense that he would fall for her after spending enough time together to see her good qualities. very enjoyable and gentle read.

A very short book of over 90 pages, copyrighted in 2001.

I suspect it's one of BN's older books that were not published but because it was M&B's 100th anniversary they wanted to publish something special from their vaults or something! It read very " old fashioned-ly" to me, like Loveday not having any computer skills at all. A bit tough to believe of a girl of 24 years old in 2001 not having basic computer skills at all but could type and do shorthand.

Loveday was one of BN's "mousy" heroines, not my fave. I must prefer her Junoesque heroines haha! However Loveday did have gorgeous green eyes and when they sparkled with joy, even staid " middle aged" Dr Andrew Fforde fell in love with her!

Because this is a short book, they had to fall in love F A S T! And I was happy for once it was the hero who fell in love and realised it before the heroine did! No Other Woman but an Other Man who was having a last fling before his wedding, and poor Lovejoy's affections were trifled with.

Once again we have a menagerie of cats and dogs; it's funny how they had thoughts and opinions just like us human beings haha!

It's only an ok read for me. A pleasant short read.

Okay, first of all, Harlequin put Bettys on KU?!?

And no one told me!

So, yeah, um, this pretty much rocked my existence when it came through my KU pipeline, and after really considering the 134 book series on Amazon (super expensive for me, maybe all of us) because I could rationalize anything for a collection of Betty Neels books that I've read about four times each, I hit that KU button and spend an entirely happy two hours of BN goodness with this one.

Also, until I hit GR to review it, I didn't know it was part of a series. I now have to go find its predecessor and read that as well.

Oh, and, a wonderful Betty that I know I have read previously because I remember the black eye, the injured dog, and the lovely aunt.

Rated 5 Woebegone Cats and Injured Dogs in Plasters.

Okay, so for most people this would not be a five-star book. She is a favorite author from my teen years {which is too long ago to admit to}. I read all of her books I could find at the used bookstore or the library. This was a new one to me. It wasn't a Dutch doctor/English nurse plot, but it was a Cinderella/British doctor plot. Heh. So old fashioned! I read hers again when I need something light and familiar and escapist.

My copy of this story is a Mills & Boon anniversary celebratory book. For 60-65 pages, this short story encompassed everything that a full story has; but, the ending did seem a bit rushed. It's by Betty Neels which automatically makes it a keeper in my mind.

Another sweet love story about a plain but good hearted girl who finds love after heartbreak. Loveday, the girl with the stunning green eyes has captured the heart of her Doctor employee. Will their age difference be a problem? Read on to see their happy ending.

Harlequin Romance

I have loved Betty Neels books since the eighties. At one time I had collected all of them. Now I just read the books I enjoyed the most. Loveday West was considered plain. But love found a way. Enjoy ❤️

A strangely short and old-fashioned romance with no suspense but a wonderful sense of place and nice characters. It all made perfect sense once I realized the author wrote it at age 92--lovely that she was still writing and able to create something this good.
