Biohackers #2

Phantom Menace

Rate this book
Two-thirds of the way through the series starter, the Singularity reaction had already begun. Explosive technological growth beyond human comprehension caught everyone up.

Now it’s impossible to look out your window from day to day without feeling like a stranger in a strange land. It’s air cars one day—soaring dragons the next. The vista is constantly being repainted by billions of citizen-scientists forever creating the world anew.

The Singularity reaction was deemed inevitable. It hardly mattered what exactly brought it about; it was always going to be something.

Roman realized new challenges would lie across the threshold separating humanity from transhumanity. But what he got was a mindless beehive that wouldn’t stop humming with activity. It was like a planet-wide form of OCD.

He and Elsa and the rest of the Daytona commune of biohackers, based in backwards Oregon, don’t have long to break free before they too lose their will to resist the Sirens.

And the clock is ticking not just on them.

The Singularity Wave pushes genetically-engineered humanoids across the cosmos in ships powered by warp drive engines. Soon the heavens will be populated with hell worlds modeled according to the same flaw in design.

Can Roman and Elsa, with the aid of their comrades, tweak the Singularity Wave to restore the heaven-on-earth vibe they were striving for all along?

While action-packed sci-fi/techno-thrillers set in the near future are my forte, I also stray into other genres from time to time, such as space operas, paranormal fantasy, and detective stories. All my novels can be described as action-thrillers, no matter the sub-genre.

You can sample my writing with a free sci-fi e-book set in the near future by visiting my website https://deancmoore.com and signing up for my email list.

I live in the country where I breed bluebirds, which are endangered in these parts, as my small contribution to restoring nature's balance. When I'm not writing, or researching my next book, I may also be found socializing with friends, or working in the garden.

If you'd like to know what compels me to write, it's simple. I write as a force for peace. Fiction has a way of engaging our whole minds, not just our intellects, but various layers of our conscious, superconscious, and unconscious. Novels also encourage our left and right cerebral hemispheres to get in sync and, with just enough magic and wizardry, can help to transform people into more enlightened souls (the writer included) better than a hundred years of therapy or rational arguments to the same ends.

I've remained a lifelong student of philosophy, spirituality, psychology, science, and the arts.

Mark Freeman Enterprises (MFE) is my company. I sometimes publish under that label or simply under Amazon Digital Services.

Kindle Unlimited, going through all 3 at once {have ARC for #3}, bit dystopian/futuristic type. This one was one of those it helped to have read the first one but there so much going on at times felt a bit lost but that sometimes happens.

Two-thirds of the way through the series starter, the singularity reaction had already begun. Explosive technological growth beyond human comprehension caught everyone up so that it was impossible to look out your window from day to day without feeling like a stranger in a strange land. The vista constantly repainted by billions of citizen-scientists forever creating the world anew. Aircars one day. Soaring dragons the next. The explosion of innovation was driven by neuronets. Everyone’s got one. The nanites in the air self-assemble into them as soon as they permeate your being. And they’re in everything, the air, the water… The singularity reaction was deemed inevitable. It hardly mattered what exactly brought it about; it was always going to be something.Roman, who fought so hard to protect “the best of all possible worlds,” finds it isn’t heaven on earth they’ve fabricated, but the perfect hell world. Perfect because no one in their right mind would want to escape it. It is thus escape-proof. It’s an Age of Abundance, after all. All human needs met. Anything your mind can dream up, you can manifest. He realized new challenges would lie across the threshold separating humanity from transhumanity. But what he got was a mindless beehive that wouldn’t stop humming with activity. It was like a planet-wide form of OCD. He and the rest of the Daytona commune biohackers, based in backwards Oregon, don’t have long to work before they too lose their will to resist the Sirens. And the clock is ticking not just on them. As the Singularity Wave pushes genetically engineered humanoids across the cosmos in ships powered by warp drive engines. Soon the heavens will be populated with hell worlds modeled according to the same flaw in design.

Once again, Dean C. Moore's Biohackers, Phantom Menace takes you on a futuristic, technological thrill ride. The second installment, Phantom Menace continues from the first book and we find Roman trying to live a peaceful life after saving the universe - so to speak. But having transhumans and robots living in a world that should be normal, peace is something Roman will probably never achieve. At least not as the omnipotent Biohacker with a mind that can tap into virtually anything.
This time around, Roman, the Sexy Six, his girlfriend, Elsa, and his usual friends are tasked to put an end to the "corporate" takeover of the multiverse. There really are no "bad" guys in this story as everyone has their own personal agenda in place. Everyone in the universe is connected to a singular mind wave where they could virtually be anyone and any place with just a single thought. Thus, the corporation wants to end this freedom and find a way to control everyone.
With the second book, Roman and Elsa's relationship grows as does the realization that their love-making is what helps Roman be the ultimate hero, the savior of the multiverse once again. It's an interesting concept for sure and a bit fantastical in the sense that true love conquers all - or so it seems.
Phantom Menace is still written with the same vein of comedic scenes and crazy characters. But through all the craziness, we can still depend on Roman to be a peacemaker and revered by the friends who support him.
Be prepared for a lot of graphic descriptions and fantastic story telling. It's not for young readers because there are a lot of explicit details.
Thank you, Dean for the ARC!

Brace for impact crew! Roman and the Sexy Six are back to save the multiverse once again as severe defects with the "Versers" neuronets are literally killing them... like cancer, slowly but surely! The special forces of the multiverse a million strong are not only sick but so thinly spread they are losing the battle against the ever expanding evil corporations grand and complex plans beyond the mindnet controlled by the Ethan/Alexa God like overseer's of the multiverse.

This is the second in the Bio-Hacker series and can be read as a stand alone book as the author succinctly brings everyone up to speed with a little back story.

I really enjoyed this as the story evolves at warp speed with tremendous amounts of action, plot twists and non stop humour usually framed in a sarcastic sense which can cause roll on the floor uncontrollable seizure type fits! The usual references to movies and TV shows, current and past is very relatable, for example the Star Trek references of warp speed and Vulcans or the Killer AI in the "Phantom Menace ... HAL, as in Space Odyssey 2001, only HAL on speed with itchy combat and strategy instincts with his neural mind always on the weapon systems firing button if he is unleashed!

There are numerous sexual comments thrown around that some will disprove of so not for younger readers but I believe it is done for humour and not so much for shock affect. so reader beware.

I did receive this complimentary copy from the author but please note I am happy to leave this review on my own volition.

Reading one of Dean C. Moore's books is like a head spin combined with being stuck in a video game. You have absolutely no idea what's going to happen and everything manages to surprise you.

Phantom Menace got me from the hilarious first page and I was soon lost in Moore's ingenious world of Versers, multi-dimensions and mindset. In spite of all this craziness, the characters- particularly protagonist Roman- are real and relatable. Combine these two elements and the result is a bizarre, creative and highly engaging novel that is both exhausting and exhilarating.

Well this didn't disappoint. Roman & crew save the universe again. Lots of tongue in cheek nods to past sci-fi authors/books & films. Hal is becoming more homicidal. Joshua still looks like sasquatch & still gets mad when people point this out.
The corporations are at it again & will do anything to improve their profits. The singularity wave must continue & Roman just wants to stay human to enjoy his life with Elsa.
Do they manage it? Well that would be telling, you'll have to read it yourself to find out.
I just love this series & can't wait to read the next book.

Perfection and ideal creativity run amok with hellish multiverse spanning consequences. A wild ride of an acid drip of reading pleasure following along to see if lead characters Roman and Elsa can succeed in saving the entire multiverse. Wow. Just wow. A truly impressive imaginative innovative novel with great characters, plot and writing. Highly recommended.

Okay so, the opening sequence starts in what I like to dub as true Moore fashion--straight to the action with a dose of awesomeness.

Even though this is a series, these books can be read as a complete stand alone. If you start with any book, you will not be lost. The author has a way of delving into the story, giving just enough explanation to where it's informative but yet, not repetitive.

So back to the story. What happens when there's new power? Deceit and lies. When you try to gear technology toward the betterment of people, there is always someone or something wanting to use it to their advantage. And I'll stop here, because this is a very complex plot, and I don't want to spoil it accidentally by trying to summarize. I will, however, encourage you to read it, along with the others.

Altogether, it's another action-packed, well-written novel by this author. I so love his books, and I'm glad I've discovered him. I will recommend clearing your plate for this one. These are the types of books that require your full attention, and several times I had to pause my reading because life kept getting in my way. When things return to a half normal for me, I do plan on rereading this. I want a full read-through without interruptions. This series is great if you're a fan of biotechnology and sci-fi. Highly recommend.

Like the first book, this was difficult to read as it was disjointed. It had a rather surreal quality which perhaps contributed to the disjointedness. The premise is interesting and somewhat disturbing and a little twisted. While part of a series this could be read as a stand-alone.

Where do I start? I have just come back from a mind-boggling journey. I need a moment to catch my breath!

Fast-paced doesn't do this book justice. So much happens and it happens so quickly. I tried to put this book down, I really tried, but oh my days, I felt like a magnet, I was drawn back, and in the end, I gave up trying to fight it. I sat down and refused to be interrupted until I had finished it.

Imagine the world that we live in now ~ the TV shows, the clothes, etc... and then imagine, if you will, advances in technology exploding overnight to beyond anything you can imagine, to the extent where even those who live in this futuristic world(s) can't comprehend it. What a concept.

This book isn't your average SciFic read. It is so much more than that. It is completely mental, and I mean that in a good way. I was sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what on earth was going to happen next. There were moment's where I grimace, and then I turned the page, and I mean turn the page, and suddenly I was laughing. I mean seriously...how often does that happen in a book.

If you are interested in some very grown-up SciFic and you don't mind being thrown into a world that seems really similar but isn't then this is the book for you!

This is a Sci-fi unlike any Sci-fi I’ve read before. It’s jammed packed with action and adventure, all set in a futuristic universe. I was blown away when I began to read about automated couplings, Sasquatch, Vulcan, and what have you. But the scene about Haiti and the Haitian breathing through the dirt, blew be out the water. Couple that with the “Nano condom that can secrete prostaglandin-E and whatever else you need to stay as hard as long as you want. You just tell it when you’ve had enough,” really had me going. The grand finale is when Roman and Elsa were successful in saving the entire multiverse. Make no mistake, this book will keep you turning the pages and questioning, what's real and what's not! Enjoy!

Phantom Menace is the second book in the Biohackers series. The book can be read as a standalone. There is a lot of violence and sex so definitely 18+.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. The author does do a good job describing for new readers this universe he created in the first book. This is not your typical SciFi story. Expect a lot of humor and sarcasm mixed in with the storyline. Be prepared for a lot of back and forth between characters and tech talk. I received a copy of this book from the author and chose to leave a review for other readers.
