The first five Dangerous Ground novellas collected in digital for the first time! (Includes two fan an “interview” with David Bradley and an “interview” with Will and Taylor)
DANGEROUS GROUND Special Agents for the Department of Diplomatic Security, Taylor MacAllister and Will Brandt have been partners and best friends for three years, but everything changed the night Taylor admitted the truth about his feelings for Will. But it’s complicated...
OLD POISON Happy Birthday, Taylor! Taylor has pretty well recovered from his shooting, but not everyone is happy to see him reach his next birthday.
BLOOD HEAT Special Agents for the Department of Diplomatic Security, Taylor MacAllister and Will Brandt have been partners forever and lovers for three months, but their new relationship is threatened when Will is offered a plum two-year assignment in Paris. It’s a bad time to find themselves in the middle of the New Mexico wilderness responsible for the health and welfare of a suspected terrorist.
DEAD RUN The boys are back in town—and Paris is burning!
For Special Agents of the Department of Diplomatic Security, Taylor MacAllister and Will Brandt, the strain of a long distance relationship is beginning to tell after eleven months of separation. A romantic holiday could be just the thing to bridge the ever-growing distance, but when Taylor spots a terrorist from the 70s, long believed dead but very much alive, it’s c’est la vie.
KICK START Will is finally braced to bring Taylor home to meet the folks. Unfortunately, not every member of the Brandt clan loves Taylor the way Will does. Then again, not everyone loves the Brandts. In fact, someone has a score to settle—and too bad for any former DS agents who get in the way when the bullets start to fly.

The Dangerous Ground novellas in Armed and Dangerous and Kick Start have long been a favourite of mine. I’ve listened to the previous versions narrated by Adrian Bisson many times, have read the ebooks, and have recently purchased the paperback. As much as I enjoy the Adrien English series, this is my favourite of all Josh Lanyon’s stories. The mystery plot to each novella is less complicated but no less enjoyable. I particularly like how the relationship between Will and Taylor develops within each story. It’s great that they work together for much of the time and we get to see them when they are off duty too. The interaction between the characters is superb, both in and outside their working environment. I especially love how they first get together in Dangerous Ground and how later, in Dead Run, their relationship is threatened while Will is in Paris
Having listened to Adrian’s version several times over I think I will always associate his voice with Will and Taylor. It took me until the end of the first story to adjust to the new narrator. Having said that, Derrick did an admirable job and anyone who hasn’t listened to the previous version should be perfectly happy with this production.
It was a fairly enjoyable romp though Taylor and Will's romance as agents for the Department of Diplomatic Security. I thought it might be comparable to Lanyon's Adrien English Mysteries, but it was a noticeable step down for this reader. While the world building and plots were good, Will and Taylor lacked the chemistry of Jake and Adrien and the prose was just not as breathtaking as in the AE Mysteries. The writing and editing were as good as ever. While I'll never forget the aforementioned AE Mysteries, sadly the Dangerous Ground novellas will barely leave a shadow of a memory.
Dangerous Ground-4 stars-interesting story of 2 Diplomatic security service officers on a vacation hiking in the mountains. They happen upon a train wreck and 2.5 million dollars from a casino heist awhile back. They also happen upon a new layer to their friendship and work partnership, becoming lovers almost reluctantly, fearing how it will go. They then happen upon the robbers, who cause a lot of trouble for the pair until they’re saved by the Department of Fish and Game!?! Great start to this series.
Old Poison-4 stars-when Taylor has some strange things start to happen, first with a bottle of wine with a cobra inside it, he brushed it off until things become more serious. In the meantime, Will is wirkingvwith David, whom hedayed before Taylor was shot. Though still attracted, he handles things well, not wanting anything to get in the way of his relationship with Taylor. Taylor’s own assignment has him bored, but managing, until the past takes over and all the little signs explode into a big dangerous kidnapping. Interesting history Taylor has in Japan, which finally comes to light in this book. As does the next step for these two, moving in together.
Blood Heat-4 stars-the duo are supposed to transport a terrorist, but she’s escaped police custody, so Taylor thinks they should pursue her. When they find her, they realize she’s 8 months pregnant, and she’s scared to be given by them to the DEA. Turns out she was an informant on her husband, and there’s a mole in the DEA who has it out for her. Taylor believes her, Will goes along, and a big mess is created when another agent takes her to get the reward put out by the DSS. Cool story with lots of twists and some fun humour.
Dead Run-5 stars-on leave for a week, Taylor is off to see Will, who’s posted in Paris. At the airport he sees a man who looks just like a terrorist that he’s read about. False alarm it seems, until he gets to Paris and the group the man was attached to starts threatening bombs are planted at the Eiffel Tower and the catacombs. Will is injured in the underground blast, and his amnesia has him forgetting that he and Taylor are lovers, and thinking he’s still with David. He has some snippets of memory, but in the meantime they get on with tracking down the terrorist. Two scenarios are possible, and Will sticks with Taylor’s plan to go to the cemetery. They discover the man himself, his reason for causing havoc, and luckily, Will remembers everything. Lovely ending with Will’s proposal.
Kick Start-4 stars-trying to start their own security consulting business, Will and Taylor are in debt, in conflict, then, of course, in trouble. They go to visit Will’s father and brother, who are housing a witness protection person. Will’s Dad is dealing with the Dooleys, a redneck family whose oldest brother had just gotten out of prison. Between their threats, another guy who has them under surveillance, and the witness running off in fear, the guys’ hands are full, and not of each other. Oh, and Taylor is trying to reach his stepdad to ask for a loan for their business, but having no luck. The witness returns, the surveillance guy is a joke rather than a threat, ditto for the Dooleys. Alls well that ends well.
There is a sixth book in this series, so will have to catch up with that one.
Will and Taylor have been partners for three years when Taylor gets taken down in a random shooting. It almost costs him his life. It’s a pivot point in their relationship, because it shakes Will out of emotional complacency. He doesn’t handle emotions well nor is he naturally introspective. The crisis of almost losing Taylor makes him both edgy and overprotective.
Taylor’s crisis came when he realized that Will was getting serious about an emotional commitment to David Bradley. Since he and Will have never explored a sexual expression in their partnership and knowing how honorable Will is, Taylor has to make a move. It’s not received well. And then Taylor gets shot. Will puts his relationship with David on hold, but he still trying to maintain an emotional distance. Taylor can’t allow that if they are to remain partners; and that’s where the series starts.
These are well crafted. The loyalty they have as partners, the I-have-your-back, is too the bone. Adding the sexual component makes some of it easier, because of how well they mesh, but it still takes work to communicate and be open in their vulnerability.
This series is a keeper and a great introduction to Josh’s take on government employees.
This book could matins the five novellas that make up the Dangerous Ground series starring Will Brandt and Taylor MacAllister. Will and Taylor are federal agents, partners, working for the Diplomatic Security Bureau, the law enforcement branch of the State Department. We start with them as work partners who grudgingly (on Will’s part) start a relationship. In the subsequent books we watch the relationship experience growing pains as we also watch our hero’s solve various mysteries.
Due to the format of the novellas we don’t get a lot of character development in each book but over the course of the five books we get a better sense of each character. The mysteries are vague and again, due to time constraints not as compelling as this author’s other work. Book five leaves a big mystery hanging with no sign there is a book six coming any time soon.
I’m not sure how I feel about these characters. Book four really ratchets up the emotional level and I felt real pain and sorrow for Taylor. But overall there’s not the same connection with these characters that I’ve felt with other characters this author has created.
I rated this series 4 stars. Just finished book five of this series and although I enjoyed them I thought the ending was too abrupt and didn't really give me the ending I'd hoped for so I was pleasantly surprised to accidentally find book 6 which I am now about to read. I absolutely loved the Adrien English series and didn't think Taylor and Will jelled as much as Adrien and Jake. For me I liked the character of Taylor more than Will. First off Will quite happily went off to Paris for 2 maybe 3 years to his cushy posting and expected Taylor to look after his dog and come and visit him whenever Taylor could get a vacation. He never bothered to go home himself. it really annoyed me the way Will thought it was acceptable to go out to dinner, kiss and take his ex boyfriend David back to his apartment and drink late into the night and keep expressing thoughts to himself that David would be a better fit for him and still having sexual feelings for him, what's that all about! I didn't much like David and after the interview I really didn't like him, what a pompous prick. I'm hoping the ending to book 6 will be a proper ending and I'm also hoping David never shows up!
Dangerous Ground #1-5 I always enjoy Josh Lanyon books, but I completely forgot that he doesn't really end them. They just kind of stop… Sometimes it's really annoying. Especially when he does it inside of a series and the implication of the way the previous book ended is not how the next one starts. Trickery trickery trickery.
It is nice that the first five books in this series are all contained within this audiobook and all red by the same narrator. Though I am not overly fond of the narrator, he didn't do a bad job just has a weird way of pronouncing certain things so it kind of bugged me. I only wish that the entirety of this series were all contained within this audiobook and since the series ends with book #6 it almost seems ridiculous to not have them all, but considering the amount of time be between the publications of the first five and the final sixth book I do understand it. Enjoy!
4.25 stars. Audiobook. Stick with it! Series of 6 books for a total of 748 pages, so more like a collection of novellas, but so well done after you get through the first book. Keep going. The first book has an unusual start, where we are dropped into a story that has already started, there is a bit of did-I-miss-a-few-chapters and we jump to some outcomes awfully quickly, but the whole series isn’t like that, it smooths out to full, rich, wonderful, traditional storytelling. The couple is great and the journey through just-friends to lovers to live-of-my-life is great. Lots of wonderful conversations and the cases/jobs/clients are interesting and entertaining. Highly recommend this author.
NOTE: there is jealousy but no cheating.
HEA, series, same couple, m/m, federal agents, medium spice, mild angst.
5 stars for "Dangerous Ground" - what an action packed start to the series. 5 stars for "Old Poison " - another dangerous story involving Taylor and Will, where their partnership is also in peril. 5+ stars for "Blood Heat " - there is a scene that absolutely took my breath away for several moments, that is until it was over and the usual dangerous action continued on. 4.5 stars for "Dead Run" - another interesting case reunites our MCs but the biggest peril continues to be to their relationship. But Will has a plan... 4 stars for "Kick Start" - Will and Taylor are trying to settle into their new life and new version of their relationship so of course things go wrong. Still like the characters, but this one just wasn't like the others before it.
A delightful walk down memory lane, this audiobook contains the first five books of the Dangerous Ground series, one I read in the early teens when I was first introduced to MM romance. This revisit was amazing as it was performed by Derrick McClain, one of my favorite narrators and his voices for Will and Taylor were perfect.
Twenty hours of listening pleasure it truly was fantastic to revisit these guys. Interestingly, I was easily able to pick out writing style differences between the author's early days and today's work, which is much more polished. But I can't deny the entertainment value of this throwback to the past.
Very definitely a recommended series to all who enjoy a little conflict with their established couples.
The series was entertaining enough. Being novellas and not full books makes it hard to see how good the author really is.
The length was one of the best features. Straight to the point and no page fillers.
Fell in like with the characters Tay more than Will.
By the end of book 5 i totally disliked David. I wonder if there would be a separate book just dor him. My opinion switched during the Q&A he cames across as uncool and sleezy.
Definitely recommed if the reader wants an easy read. I tag these books as cool reads between heavy non fiction books. As they are swift and uncomplicated.
Story: To summarize the whole series.....poor writing, filled with impossible, full of stereotypes, tons of sexism from someone who is supposed to be part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, misinformation and incredibly poor character construction. Immature characters who are incredibly incompetent at their job and at a true romantic relationship. I did not expect the series to be this bad from other stories I've read from this author...but I was SO disappointed. Not because this is a work of fiction it means that the writing needs to be lazy. Happy Readings!
4 stars as a series with Blind Side (Book 6) as a finale.
I enjoyed Will and Taylor's relationship very much. Good progress of relationship growth. Enough angst to keep things interesting. However, on the investigation/thriller part, I often found it highly convoluted, very difficult to follow especially in Book 3-4. Nevertheless, this series's still a very enjoyable read, and if you're a fan of Josh Lanyon's works, you shouldn't miss it.
I love this author, he is an incredible writer. While this was a good series, it was not the best. I personally love the couple's from All's Fair and Art of Murder. Taylor and Will were ok but lacked a lot of the chemistry I've come to expect from Lanyon's characters.
I'm a big fan of Josh Lanyon and have read the Adrien series several times as well as other of her full-length novels. The point blank series seemed disjointed and left me disappointed in general. What I love most about this author is her ability to make me feel what her characters are going through and connect with them. I couldn't connect with the main characters here at all. Each story felt incomplete and the whole series felt like fluff to me because I couldn't empathize on a deeper level. I give three stars for the superb writing and for the few lines here and there that made me smile but on the whole, it is not a series I would re-read or even recommend to friends.
Dangerous Ground, book 1, Loose Id, Apr/08 Old Poison, book 2, Loose Id, Nov/09 Blood Heat, book 3, Loose Id, Oct/10 Dead Run, book 4, Loose Id, Sep/11 Kickstart, book 5, Loose Id, Nov/13
Ok. There was a bit too much angst and unhappiness in these books. The last story does not wrap things up much, leaves a number of issues dangling.
