*While this is part of the Hotel Paranormal Series, it is a standalone.*

Prescott Darling is a single father, to all outward appearances.

He gets up each morning, gets his children off to school. He drives to work, toils and negotiates, then comes home to pick up his little family from his mother's house. Dinner, homework, bed. It's been like this for years. He's tired of hearing she's not coming back. He's done with people trying to set him up on dates. He just wants to live this simple life.

Because Prescott Darling hides a secret from everyone. Even from the three little children he's raising. Their mother is alive, well. She watches them each day as they grow and thrive and play.

Until the sun sets, and she must slip the waves and disappear into her watery home once more...

3.5 ✨✨✨✨

This was my first book by J. Rose Alexander and even though I liked her writing style and enjoyed the story I just don't think this is a genre for me. This book kinda reminded me of adult version of The Little Mermaid in a way.

Prescott has always loved seals since he was a kid and grows up to become a marine biologist. When he's 14 he gets bonded to one silver seal in particular.

As a adult during a drunk night in Alaska he bumps into Vivi and is immediately warned off of her being told she's already been claimed only he has no intention of listening and follows her out of the bar only to find out not only is Vivi a shape shifter seal/human she's also the seal he got bonded with as a child. Even though Vivi is spoken for against her will her and Prescott get married and have kids only to have Erinus make it impossible for them to be together.

Theres a lot of twists in this book about why Vivi & Prescott can't be together and what they finally decide to do about. Prescott refuses to move on from Vivi knowing exactly where she is but, not being able to tell his family him and Vivi devise a plan.

"I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own."

This is the first book of J Rose Alexander's that I have read. She has created a wonderful paranormal world full of compelling characters in Slip the Waves. The story takes place mostly in Newfoundland over a 20-year period. Preston becomes fascinated with seals while on a family vacation as a boy. A beautiful, young silver seal "chooses" him during that time. As a grown man, his love influences his career as he becomes a marine biologist to study his beloved seals. On a research trip to Alaska, he meets Vivi, a selkie, a seal/human shape shifter. Vivi is the seal from his boyhood trip. Their bond is renewed, they are bonded, and start a family.

Their love is sweet, but their story is full of heartache thanks to a jealous wizard and his curse. You can't help but get caught up with the difficulties that they face as a family. They went through so much to stay together, the pain of separation, and watching each other from afar. Loved their children! There is plenty of suspense; the book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I felt like it was a bit rushed at times. Maybe it would have worked better as a longer book or even as two books. Still it was a good read.

"I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review."
Good read, I think it would benefit the book if it was in 2 book instead of 1. Sometimes it felt rushed, and I would love to get a little more detailed scenes once in a while.

Otherwise good book, well written and a good plot.

A super paranormal book about someone named Preston, who loves seals. The book takes place in Newfoundland over a period of twenty years. A seal actually picks him and so the story carries on. Loved reviewing this ARC
