Highland Nights #1

The Reluctant Highlander

Rate this book
An uncertain bride looks for love with a man as wild and mysterious as his Highland home in this new Scottish romance from a USA Today–bestselling author.

Ordinarily, Lady Fiona Ormiston wouldn’t think of forming an alliance with an ungroomed, barbaric Highlander, despite the protection he offers. But now, by request of the king, Sir Adham MacFinlagh, a brazen stranger and outsider unlike anyone she has met before, is to be her husband. Torn from solitude and the comfort of her family to make a home with the rugged knight, Fiona surrenders to Adham’s powerfully passionate—and shockingly tender—touch, only to discover her new husband’s family ties may lie with an enemy of the king.

A sense of duty may have brought Adham to the marriage bed, but it’s his powerful feelings for his beautiful, willful wife that will be his undoing. Ultimately, the bold knight will have to Does his allegiance lie with his blood ties to the man who hopes to bring down the king or with the bride who has stolen his heart?

From the author “frequently credited with creating the subgenre” of Scottish romance with her Lairds of the Loch and Secret Clan series, The Reluctant Highlander is a rich historical tale of intrigue and desire (Library Journal).

Amanda Scott, USA Today Bestselling Author and winner of Romance Writers of America’s RITA/Golden Medallion (LORD ABBERLEY'S NEMESIS) and Romantic Times’ Awards for Best Regency Author and Best Sensual Regency (RAVENWOOD'S LADY), Lifetime Achievement (2007) and Best Scottish Historical (BORDER MOONLIGHT, 2008), began writing on a dare from her husband. She has sold every manuscript she has written.

Amanda is a fourth-generation Californian, who was born and raised in Salinas and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in history from Mills College in Oakland. She did graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in British History, before obtaining her Master’s in History from California State University at San Jose. She now lives with her husband and son in northern California.

As a child, Amanda Scott was a model for O’Connor Moffatt in San Francisco (now Macy’s). She was also a Sputnik child, one of those selected after the satellite went up for one of California’s first programs for gifted children. She remained in that program through high school. After graduate school, she taught for the Salinas City School District for three years before marrying her husband, who was then a captain in the Air Force. They lived in Honolulu for a year, then in Papillion, Nebraska, for seven. Their son was born in Nebraska. They have lived in northern California since 1980.

Scott grew up in a family of lawyers, and is descended from a long line of them. Her father was a three-term District Attorney of Monterey County before his death in 1955 at age 36. Her grandfather was City Attorney of Salinas for 36 years after serving two terms as District Attorney, and two of her ancestors were State Supreme Court Justices (one in Missouri, the other the first Supreme Court Justice for the State of Arkansas). One brother, having carried on the Scott tradition in the Monterey County DA’s office, is now a judge. The other is an electrician in Knoxville, TN, and her sister is a teacher in the Sacramento area.

The women of Amanda Scott’s family have been no less successful than the men. Her mother was a child actress known as Baby Lowell, who performed all over the west coast and in Hollywood movies, and then was a dancer with the San Francisco Opera Ballet until her marriage. Her mother’s sister, Loretta Lowell, was also a child actress. She performed in the Our Gang comedies and in several Loretta Young movies before becoming one of the first women in the US Air Force. Scott's paternal grandmother was active in local and State politics and served as president of the California State PTA, and her maternal grandmother was a teacher (and stage mother) before working for Monterey County. The place of women in Scott’s family has always been a strong one. Though they married strong men, the women have, for generations, been well educated and encouraged to succeed at whatever they chose to do.

Amanda Scott’s first book was OMAHA CITY ARCHITECTURE, a coffee-table photo essay on the historical architecture of Omaha, written for Landmarks, Inc. under her married name as a Junior League project. Others took the photos; she did the research and wrote the text on an old Smith-Corona portable electric. She sold her first novel, THE FUGITIVE HEIRESS - likewise written on the battered Smith-Corona in 1980. Since then, she has sold many more books, but since the second one she has used a word processor and computer. Twenty-five of her novels are set in the English Regency period (1810-1820). Others are set in 15th-century England and 14th- through 18th-century Scotland, and three are contemporary romances. Many of her titles are currently available at bookstores and online.

The Reluctant Highlander by Amanda Scott is a Scottish romance novel about an unlikely relationship between two main characters Lady Fiona Ormiston and Sir Adham MacFinlagh.

I'll start by saying that I adored the main story and elements. It kept my attention and I didn't feel bored throughout. I loved the writing style and the character descriptions. I was pleased with the way the story unfolded and became adventurous at times.

I did feel like it was lacking a tad on the romance factor and found myself wanting a more bold relationship between the two which seemed to be absent. However, it's still a great book and I'm glad to have read it.

Thanks to Netgalley for sharing a copy with me.

Nem sequer o casal principal me convenceu!

I received an electronic copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I went into this book expecting nothing out of it. I honestly thought I would roll my eyes and skim through it, but I requested it because it's a Highland romance, and Outlander has me craving more of those. Plus customers at the store who are hardcore romance fans rave about Amanda Scott!

I was pleasantly surprised by this novel! It made me laugh out loud at parts, our female lead was strong and fierce, and kind of a feminist in some ways which was a nice addition in and of itself!

I would say the strongest aspect of this book was the depth. It was full of history and setting and atmosphere - I'm thinking this is why those romance customers love Amanda Scott so much, because she knows her shit! She included so much specific history with names and places and events, I couldn't believe it! Personally, I was overwhelmed by it because I am not super familiar with Scottish history or geography. But if you are, then I think you will really enjoy this.

I liked the pairing of Fiona and Adham - they balanced each other well and they were able to learn from each other while remaining true to themselves. I also liked their extended family & friends - this was a pretty solid cast of supporting characters.

The weakest part of this book unfortunately was the romance itself. It focuses so so so much on the history and like the politics between everybody and the impending war, and not enough time is spent with those romantic moments. I was expecting much more romance and sexy times! I mean, it's a romance book! So that knocked it down quite a few stars for me.

The writing wasn't the best I've ever read, but it was still fun and had me interested enough to finish it in a day so no heavy complaints there. Overall I would recommend this if your looking for something very Scottish! But if you want romance from it, you may be disappointed.

A moonlight meeting, a marriage and a battle!___3.5 stars

1420's Scotland. Lady Fiona Ormiston is a winsome stubborn lass and Sir Àdham MacFinlagh a thoughtful highlands warrior.
The opening scenes are amusing. Fiona has a penchant for swimming where she shouldn't at a time that's definitely suspect. As a knight, Àdham sees it as his duty to rescue a damsel whom it seems doesn't think she needs rescuing.
King James is bent on encouraging 'tactical marriages' where former enemies might be brought together, strengthening the kingdom. Fiona and Àdham fit into that category. But will taking Fiona back into the highland wilds be a blessing or a curse?
Of course there are plots within plots and Fiona and Àdham Rae going to have their hands full in dealing with each other and the dangers that lurk beyond their horizon.
The thing is Fiona doesn't have too good a sense of direction. This is a mixed blessing at times.
The story flows well. An enjoyable romantic historical highland novel.

'The Reluctant Highlander' by Amanda Scott The Reluctant Highlander by Amanda Scott My rating: 4 of 5 stars 'The Reluctant Highlander' by Amanda Scott is the story of Lady Fiona Ormiston and Sir Adham MacFinlagh. Fiona has been ordered by the King to Marry Adham. Fiona has been comfortable with the life she has but goes along with the Marriage. Although Adham is totally different than any one she is used to being around. Adham is finding that he is starting to have feelings for his new wife. This was a story of strangers marrying as requested and slowly starting to learn about the other as their days go on. Each thinking something of the other when meeting and going into this marriage...but then that previous preconception starting to change. Later though they are put to the test again when it is thought that Adham family might have ties to the enemy. Overall found this book to be very good.

Series: The Highland Series #1
Publication Date: June 13, 2017

This delightful novel is filled with history and romance. The book covers some turbulent times in ancient Scotland -- 1429-1431. It is a time when the king is trying to bring peace and continuity to his governance but many of the Highland lords don’t like his policies and they are supporting another to rule parts of the country. It is a time filled with subterfuge and the king isn’t sure who he can trust and depend upon. It is a dangerous time to be a Scot – not the most dangerous in their history, but still unsettled and turbulent.

Sir Adham MacFinlagh is a true hero in every sense of the word and I really liked him. Also he’s a true Highlander and warrior. Adham has a bit of a sad family history, yet he’s remarkably well adjusted and happy in his family relationship. He is a firm supporter of the king even though he doesn’t agree with everything the king wants to do.

Lady Fiona Ormiston is the daughter of the kings most trusted advisor. She’s smart, sassy and independent even though she’s in service to the queen. She thinks Highlanders are all barbarians and is surprised to find she likes Adham when she meets him while she’s out for a midnight swim in the loch (yes, she snuck out).

Through the machinations of the king and Fiona’s father Adham and Fiona find themselves married to each other. I’ve read several reviews that say this book is very short on romance and that they didn’t have time to fall in love. Well – I beg to differ. The book covers well over a year in time and although Adham is away a lot to do the kings work, he comes home regularly. The book plainly says that, so they have all of that time to learn to love and appreciate each other without each visit being specifically spelled out.

There is, of course, a set of bad guys aside from the turbulence and battles that take place. It is nice to see them get their comeuppance.

One thing I really liked was the ‘Glossary’ at the beginning of the book. I would have liked it to have been a little bigger, but I was happy that it had one at all because most of the books don’t.

"I requested and received this book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."

Delightful, entertaining, action packed and intriguing historical romance. The descriptions of the area, people and way of life where just detailed enough to fuel the imagination and keep the readers attention to the very end.

Lady Fiona Ormiston is so full of sass and spunk you can't help but adore her and root for her happiness. Sir Adham MacFinlagh, an ungroomed, barbaric Highlander with a ready mind and strength of charter is so alluring he just draws you in. Loved all the twists and turns in their adventure and supporting story line. Looking forward to more from this series.

*I am voluntarily reviewing an eARC of this book provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*

I liked this book. It is well written and contains a lot of interesting historical facts as well as a sweet little love story with a bit of intrigue and adventure.

Fiona is the youngest daughter of Ormiston, an advisor to King James, and a maid of honor to Queen Joan. Fiona was raised on the borders and is a bit impulsive. Sir Adham is the nephew and one time ward of Fin of the Battles. He fought in the battle of Lochaber, where Alexander MacDonald, Lord of the Isles was defeated and was knighted by King James after the battle.

Alexander MacDonald surrendered himself to King James and was imprisoned at Tantallon. This story begins about a year after his imprisonment.

Adham and Fiona first meet when she slips out one night to swim. Adham spies her entering the water and when she doesn't surface, he rushes to save her. Fiona doesn't need rescuing and attempts to get Adham to leave her alone. He refuses to leave her alone outside the towns walls and insists on returning her to her lodgings. When they return, they are caught by her father.

Adham is intrigued by the lovely Fiona, but has more pressing matters to attend to and doesn't have time to dally with the lass. When her father demands that he explain why they were together, he explains that the meeting was entirely innocent and protects Fiona from her father's wrath. A few nights later he saves her again when she is accosted at dinner.

The King decides that Adham is just the man he needs and proposes that he marry Fiona to form an alliance with her family and asks him to gather information in the highlands about rumors he has heard about supporters of the Lord of the Isles. Adham agrees to marry Fiona, but only if she is not forced to marry him.

Fiona never imagined marrying a highlander, but she likes Adham and agrees to marry him.

They travel back to his home in the highlands and she meets Catriona, Fin's wife as well as their twin daughters. As she is learning to adapt to her new life, she has to do so without her husband, as Adham is away a lot on his mission.

I will be honest, I am not sure how these two fell in love, they are not together much through a good portion of the book. But when the worst happens and a battle to free the Lord of the Isles begins, Fiona knows that she loves Adham and he her. Several weeks pass after the battle and Adham has not returned.

When Adham's young ward comes to her in the middle of the night saying that he thinks he knows what happened to Adham, she jumps at the chance to find her missing husband.

After a daring rescue, our lovers are reunited and the story wraps up.

The book was really interesting, but very light on the romance. I consider this as more of a historical fiction novel than a true historical romance.

I would recommend this book, as the story is fascinating and Ms. Scott is a generous writer who gives her readers detailed notes as well as a glossary of terms used. I will definitely read the next book in the series!

Another spectacular novel by the gifted Amanda Scott.

The North Inch of Perth, June, 1431

Lady Fiona Ormiston is forming an alliance with the last man she would pick! A barbaric Highlander despite getting protection. Yet by request of the King she must marry Sir Adham MacFinlagh. A total stranger and unlike anyone she has met before. Though he is to be her husband and hopefully he will shave and bath more often and be more clean and sanitary.

She is shocked when she finds out her new husband is a tender and a wonderful and caring bed partner.

Then she gets some shocking horrible news! Her new husband's family could be traitors and enemies of the King. Things are now exactly how they seem ,but can Sir Adham trust his new wife? The Knight must make a decision allegiance with blood ties that is enemies of the King? Perhaps stand with bride that took his heart so quickly, but he seems to trust her overnight? He will have to pick a side. Which side will it be? His loving wife or blood relatives? Fiona is also an advisor of the King. It is like standing or sitting in between a rock and a hard place.

I love how Ms. Scott puts true factual
history with fictional historical romance in her novels. It makes the read so much more interesting and fun to read! I highly recommend this brilliant book! I read in a day - as I was sitting at the edge of my seat wondering what could possibly happen next!

This fast phenomenal, quick paced page turner, filled with royal intrigue, plus riveting adventure, mystery, suspense, betrayal, forgiveness, passion and love!

This book is filled with all the elements Scottish romance readers will absolutely love! It is a book you definitely don’t want to miss. I have been reading Amanda Scott books for years and I absolutely love each and every one! I highly recommend “The Reluctant Highlander” by Amanda Scott

This is an enjoyable, well written book but I like Amanda Scott's earlier series better, especially Border Nights. I very much like that this author stays true to the history of Scotland. This book takes place in 15th century Scotland, a time of strife for that country.

Sir Adam MacFinlagh is a highland warrior loyal to the King. Lady Fiona Ormiston is one of the queen's ladies and not fond of highlanders, though she is attracted to Adam. The king decides they will marry. While not thrilled to be living in the highlands, she is attracted to her husband and wishes he wasn't gone so much. Adam loves her but has to answer when the king calls.

Much more that I won't spoil. They do get their HEA and I can recommend this book. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me this ARC. No one influenced my review.

Historical romance is one of my favorite genres. I enjoy learning about the time period, the customs and local. I felt like this one ended up being more about the politics of the time rather than really letting me get to know how life was like in Scotland during this time period. I really got bogged down with all the names and how they were all related. It felt like everyone was a cousin or uncle and the polical leanings of each was difficult to keep straight.

The romance was a lesser part of the story. It started slowly and I enjoyed the beginings of Fiona and Adham's interest in one another. I was somewhat sad that they had to jump straight to marriage before they really got to get to know each other. From here on out the relationship was just sex and then he would go off on his political trips to return to have sex again. This was all a little too graphic for my liking. I prefer to have the sex infered and not detailed and it would be nice to have an actual relationship before the "coupling".

I say skip this one especially if you want a clean historical romance.

RATING: 2.5 stars

As an avid Amanda Scott fan, I’m always excited to see when she has a new Scottish highlander romance hitting the bookshelves. If you don’t mind a hefty serving of historical details/politics/very descriptive writing about pretty much everything in general (i.e., clothes, the landscape, whose related to who, etc.), and lengthy conversations in your romantic reads, you may want to considering checking into this one. For me, I reluctantly admit this highlander romance didn’t quite meet my expectations.

You see, I’m all about the romance so the aspects I just mentioned felt like they were taking up more of the storyline than I have patience for. In fact, I started, stopped, and restarted reading this book so many times I struggled to remember the last part I read. The 20% mark seems to be the point where I would always want to put it down.

By 35%, when I should have been happy the main couple were actually going to start spending time together, I reflected on the hard to understand at times dialect and the fact it was taking overly long for anything to happen, and I once again started questioning why I wasn’t calling it quits again.

But, hey, I pushed on until the 60% point. Even after escaping a perilous situation, I still felt the writing was too verbose and taking too long to tell the tale. That is when I reluctantly did finally throw in the towel, which is a dang shame because I did really enjoy the sweet romance between this couple. I simply needed more of it and less politics.

I wish this author continued success in all her literary endeavors and sincerely hope others enjoy this book. I’m chalking this up to hopefully it’s just me and won’t be you, folks. Honestly, I gave it several tries. It just wasn’t meant to be.

Title: Reluctant Highlander, Author: Amanda Scott, Pages: 350, stand-alone, heavy on historical details/lengthy conversations/overly descriptive writing, good guy hero, sweet heroine, some violence, a few steamy scenes, arranged marriage, did not finish after 60%.

For a romance — even a story of almost-convenient marriage — this tale of 15th century Scotland turns on a somewhat unusual conflict. The biggest drama stems from background events related to conflict between the Scottish king and insurgent Islesmen, but the author means the drama to hinge more on the romance. (As to the former, a tip: Once you get to the most detailed description of possible combat near Inverlochy, pull up Google maps. Seeing how the actual terrain lie, helped immensely in understanding the argument between old and young warriors.)

In the romance, though, I didn't find the kind of narrative tension I'd expect. The couple's mutual attraction is never really in doubt, especially since they marry relatively early in the story. Even once they are wed, the protagonists don't seem that concerned about whether the other could, will or does love them — though naturally this must develop, given the genre.

No, the biggest conflict ostensibly comes from whether Fiona, a more genteel child of the Borderlands and former maid to Queen Joanna, can adjust to life in the Highlands, far from family and forced to learn a second language to communicate. But even here, she finds less difficulty than I would expect, and almost no real setbacks specific to the foreign-to-her setting. To be sure, Scott weaves an engaging tale of Royal Scottish drama and inter-clan conflict, but the threat of war provides far more narrative tension than any element of the romance itself.

Unlike some reviewers, who the story too light on romance (which may have more to do with the sex between our leads), I found Scott's touch more evenhanded than many. Though she depicts far more than the chaste Betty Neels does, Scott doesn't get overly graphic on detail. She even gives one of the more realistic treatments I've seen to a first encounter (especially the woman's first ever). And over the course of the story, we get to watch the couple gradually become more adept at pleasing each other, which adds a nice depth to the depiction of their growing relationship.

All that being said, Scott doesn't let us experience the story through Fiona's body as much as she might; when we do get such detail, it most often occurs in sexual foreplay, as if Fiona doesn't sense much otherwise. We get little detail of what food tastes like and only occasional scents, like one woman's ambergris perfume.

I also wished that Scott did not credit Ardham (sp?) with introducing Fiona to her body, as if he knows it better than she. By no means is Scott the only romance author to phrase it this way, and I found it believable that Fiona had not engaged in prior self-discovery, but why could not her husband at least be credited with discovery, rather than pedagogy? Whatever his prior knowledge of women, he undoubtedly had to learn a lot about Fiona's specific tastes and desires.

But no, by Scott's lights, he must teach her these pleasures, rather than joining her in a mutual journey of discovery. Oh, the wonderful experience and sexual knowledge of the young 20-something warrior! What would women ever do without men patiently introducing us to our bodies!

To her credit, Fiona does at one point speak up about some things, but even this I found myself a bit skeptical of, though it fit with an overall sense of anachronistic relationships between men and women. Certainly she faces many ways in which her father, the king, her husband and even an uncle by marriage expect her to follow their orders, but on the whole, the story's "good" men displayed attitudes toward women that seemed much more modern than I'd expect of such a time. Then again, I suppose we probably wouldn't be able to stand or stay with more realistic depictions of male-female relationships then, would we?

Overall, it's a well-told, well-researched story, with a more narratively justified depiction of marital intimacy than many stories, but I don't know if I'll read more by this author or not.

Like Jamie and Claire xD
Eu: They do fuck. A lot.
Ela: Fofinho. Claro.

Ah, this was such a lovely book! I love Amanda Scott's books; they are a lovely blend of romance amidst the history happening. And in this book I was pleased to see that Scott had a different take on the "forced arranged marriage" scenario. Fiona and Adham meet briefly before the arranged marriage is even a consideration and the unusual circumstances of it (he finds her outside the city walls swimming in the moonlight and, thinking she is drowning, he jumps into save her) allow them to see they have a good rapport...and pants feelings. :-) After the marriage is suggested, Adham is pretty much on board and while Fiona has doubts (and quite understandable ones) about living in the Highlands after having been raised on the Borders, she agrees because she sees the sense in it (and pants feelings).

What makes this different is that it's no so much a "fish out of water" story or a "getting to know each other and falling in love in the process" story so much as it's a story about two compatible people who do go from attraction to love, but also the thousand little (and not so little) negotiations and learning moments as they find out each other's boundaries and call each other out when they misbehave and try to understand each other. Although sometimes the characters did rather rash and stupid things (Fiona deciding impulsively to rescue Adham by herself was very romantic but so so foolish), I never found myself yelling at the book "Just talk to each other about it!" Fiona and Adham *do* talk about it, usually right after (or a after a short cooling period) an incident and they come to an understanding of how each of them may have contributed to the issue. It's beautiful to see characters demonstrating how to do a relationship right rather than how to do it wrong.

And the surrounding story was also engrossing too! I don't know enough about Scottish history to have been spoiled for how the battle ended by even if I had, I would still have been engrossed in the ever-creeping plot to kidnap Fiona. Just a lovely book and one that I will be gey pleased to visit again when I need a little pick-me-up.

Publisher's description:

An uncertain bride looks for love with a man as wild and mysterious as his Highland home in this new Scottish romance from a USA Today bestselling author.

Ultimately, the bold knight will have to decide: Does his allegiance lie with his blood ties to the man who hopes to bring down the king or with the bride who has stolen his heart?

My Thoughts:

This is not the first book I have read by this author and it will not be the last.

The historical detail in this book is very well researched and detailed, however I felt the love story was lacking. It was too sketchy and needed to have more depth.

I thought it needed more love story and less history and politics.

I gave this book 3.75 of 5 stars for storyline and character development. It had too much historical detail and not enough character interaction. The sensual level gets 2.5 of 5 flames.

I received a digital ARC of this book via NetGalley from the publisher to read. This in no way affected my opinion or review of this title which was read and reviewed voluntarily.

The Reluctant Highlander was a Scottish romance that featured suspense and action. Lady Fiona Ormiston is on the court of the Queen. She has dreams of her future and it most certainly does not include a bearded highlander, but when one crosses her path during a midnight swim, Fiona has trouble getting him out of her mind.

Warrior, Sir Adham MacFinlagh, has traveled to town with his Clan for the Parliament meeting. He is loyal to the King but he has biological relations that are trying to pull his loyalty away from the King. He has trouble getting Lady Fiona out of his mind after meeting her during her swim. He is pleased when the King and Fiona's father arrange for him and Fiona to be married. Fiona and Adam marry and Fiona is taken to the Highlands to live with Adam and his family. During their trip, they avoid an attempted kidnapping. Adam and Fiona are in the middle of a war of loyalty. Adam has been asked to travel to the different Clans to assure their loyalty to the King. Adam leaves on trips and then returns to his home. He is helping Fiona adjust to the Highlands and as they come to know one another better, they fall in love with each other. Fiona has trouble adjusting to being married to a Warrior, but she learns to pray for his safe return. All changes when she realizes she may hold the key to Adam's safety.

I found The Reluctant Highlander interesting with likable characters. The steamy romance between Adam and Fiona developed nicely. The ending was fantastic, full of action and suspense.

It is easy to see why Amanda Scott is a bestselling author. Her research, character development and vivid imagery of Scotland in the 1400's was beyond my expectations.

From the very beginning, I adored Lady Fiona Ormiston. She was adventurous and bold, yet remained dignified and lady-like While stealing away late one night to enjoy a swim in the moonlight, Sir Adham arrives to see her in the water. Thinking she was drowning, he jumps in to save her. Although Fiona sees him as a ruthless barbarian, she soon warms to him and the chemistry between them comes close to igniting. When King James and Fiona's father suggest that Sir Adham should take Lady Fiona's hand in marriage, the two somewhat reluctantly, agree. But then the passion begins and the love flourishes.

I would have given this 5 stars, but there was a great deal of talking politics. I know it was important to the story to understand the history of Scotland, but it made parts of the story drag on a bit and there were a few times I had to put the book down. Once we got beyond the history of all the battles, it got really good again and I absolutely loved the ending. No spoilers. You need to read this for yourself to see what happens.

A most unusual read with rich historical detail and wording appropriate for its era.

Adham is the main male character who is presented as a man full of integrity, superb warrior abilities and is embedded with a hidden caring that continues to present itself throughout the book. His dealings with Lady Fiona Ormiston and her father caused me to think that there were two extreme sides to his personality. The hardened warrior he presents to all people and the caring side that he rarely shows but those close to him know. Because of this he caught my interest early.

Lady Fiona as the main female character drove me a little batty at times. I wanted to shake her because of her carelessness in certain aspects of her life. But this part of her character is indeed her strength at the end of the book and I could see how no other woman would of been the one to be there for Adham in the manner he needed.

Seriously, I got wrapped up in the history that is throughout this book and I could feel myself going back in time. It was well done.

I give this 3.75 STARS only because I had trouble following the story at times because of the old language that was used and most of us are not familiar with.

This was a charming tale about Fiona, who thinks she knows exactly what she would want in a man were she desire to marry, and Adham, who knows what he wants at first sight. I loved how Fiona came to see beyond the scruffy, somewhat unkempt and definitely less-than-fashionable exterior of Adham and appreciate him for his inner beauty, strengths and steadfast loyalty. There was just the slightest Beauty & The Beast feel to this story, but not enough to keep the story from developing and showcasing its own unique merits. Fiona thinks all Highlanders are wild heathens, and it is heartwarming to watch her get to know Adham's people, and learn just how mistaken she was, as she comes to care for them as if they were her own. But, when King and Country call Adham and his clansmen to war, will she lose her new husband and the welcoming people in her newfound home?

This is a slow moving love story that is full of intrigue and action and drama and amusement. Adham is a simple knight, a gentleman and warrior, who King James asks to form an alliance with his most trusted advisor by marrying the man's daughter, Fiona. Fiona is a ladies maid to Queen Joanna, she's a simple girl who likes her privacy and a bit of freedom. They marry and go back to the highlands so that Adham can collect information about who might be plotting against the king. Throughout the story two bumbling idiots are trying to kidnap Fiona to use as leverage over her father. The storyline is rich with details and interesting characters. Adham is not a favorite of mine, he's too oblivious to his wife's feelings, wants and needs. I do love Fiona. She is feisty, but not overly much, and she is brave and has just enough independent tendencies to make her fun. My favorite characters though are Argus and Eos.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Amanda Scott is welcome to pull me out of my regency world anytime she damn well pleases. With her meticulous research and wonderful prose, she brings Highland's history and politics to life and immerses me into her tales of intrigue and romance with an ease.

There’s a lot to like about this story, aside of being well written and researched. I found the story sweet and heartwarming. The couple was engaging and their story compelling. Fiona was sweet as much as she was strong and adventurous. She was a perfect match for Adham, an Alpha male warrior with shades of Beta hero tendencies.

What I found fascinating was the political plot to this story. I loved the history and intrigue of the setting and if you're into that sort of thing, I think you'll gobble it up.

I really liked this story and highly recommend it for its history and suspense as much as for action and romance.

What a refreshing take on an historical romance story. Author Amanda Scott has researched well the time, place and its history for this richly told tale. She captures well the the uncertainty of new acquaintanceship as it develops into respect, wonder, infatuation, adoration and eventually, love. Her characters are very well developed and the historic detail well laid out.

Too many historic romance stories are rather trite with merely a gesture to the history of the time of the story's setting. Not so with Ms Scott's first installment in the Highland Romance series. One imagines well the streets of Perth and the relationship between crown and church. One tastes the tang of blood on the battlefield and one experiences the lushness of the Highland's natural beauty.

I am grateful to author Amanda Scott, publisher Open Road Media, Inc. and Goodreads First Reads for having provided a copy of this book. Their generosity, however, did not influence this review - the words of which are mine alone.

I enjoy reading Highlander romances, but this one didn't keep my interest. Ms. Scott is a talented author and writes well. She clearly researched history for this story. However, the romance took a back seat to the plot. There was so many relationships to keep track of, who was related to who, who was loyal to King James and the dialogue spoken in dialect really got annoying after a while. I could barely make out what they were saying while the story plodded along.

I have read other novels by Ms. Scott and will certainly read more, but "The Reluctant Highlander" missed the mark for me.
