There's a murderer among the merchandise at the Winter Market in the French Quarter in the latest Scrapbooking Mystery from New York Times bestselling author Laura Childs, now in paperback.

The holidays are a busy time for scrapbook shop owner Carmela Bertrand--but not so hectic that she doesn't have time to enjoy browsing the booths at the Winter Market with her best friend, Ava. The last thing the ladies expect to see is a lurching man stabbed by a serving fork, dying in front of them.

The victim is loathed restaurant critic Martin Lash, who posted his scathing reviews on the Glutton for Punishment website. And the prime suspect is New Orleans restaurateur Quigg Brevard--who was seen giving the critic a tongue-lashing minutes before someone stuck a fork in him. An old flame of Carmela's, Quigg asks for her help, which does not please her current beau, Detective Edgar Babcock, to say the least.

Before her relationship is the next victim, Carmela needs to find a murderer who had no reservations about punishing the culinary curmudgeon...

Laura Childs is a pseudonym for Gerry Schmitt and she is the best-selling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, the Scrapbook Mysteries, and the Cackleberry Club Mysteries.

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fund raising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries - set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She's also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn't rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries - a slightly edgier series that take place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans' spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries - set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe's undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

Get caught up in the allure of the latest Scrapbooking Mystery in sultry New Orleans. Carmella's secret sleuthing may have the sexy Babcock cooling his heels, but ex-boyfriend, Quigg, is ready to step back up and woo Carmella, if she'll let him. Bestie, Ava, is always game for adventure and she and Carmella provide laugh-out-loud scenes a-plenty as they get entangled in all kinds of trouble snooping for clues. The dialogue is snappy and fun as they pop in and out of places using their charm, wits, and connections. The pacing is near perfect as you peruse the menu of suspects where you'll find it difficult to make a selection of who's guilty of what. In a city that rarely sleeps; near the gator-filled bayous; prepare to sink your teeth into this well-crafted mystery and let the good times roll! Great Scrapbooking ideas and delicious recipes included.

A page turner! It's Winter Market in New Orleans, Louisiana--an outdoor celebration of art, jewelry, crafts, food, and vintage clothing set up near the French Quarter. Victim #1 is a loathed restaurant critic, Martin Lash, who's also a radical environmentalist. The top suspect is Quigg; old boyfriend of Carmella Bertrand, owner of Memory Mine, a popular Scrapbooking shop. When Carmella and best friend, Ava, witness Lash's gruesome death scene at the market, handsome Detective Edgar Babcock--also Carmella's love interest--is not pleased to find her in the midst of another crime scene. He'll be more unhappy when he finds out she's agreed to do some secret investigating for Quigg. If you're a fan of the Scrapbooking series, you know that's not gonna turn out well for Carmella! When her curiosity leads her to Victim #2, Babcock blows. Will their relationship sink or survive? Fantastic cozy mystery!

The reason I picked up this book was because it had a foodie plot, that I thought would be a fun read. It was more than fun, the writing was hilarous, from the first chapter and I knew I would enjoy Crepe Factor.

Carmela Bertrand runs Memory Mine, A Scrapbooking Shop and her best friend, Ava are quite the pair, they so remind me of Tricia and Angelica from Lorna Barrett's Booktown mysteries, I loved them. The Winter Market has come to the French Quarter in New Orleans.

Among the vendors at the Market there were food vendors. Martin Lash writes on a food website called "Glutton for Punishment" Carmela and Ava among the crowd as they observe him gasping for air and lurching wildly with a huge serving fork protruding from him when he landed on the pavement heading for them, Splat !!!

Quigg is a restauranteur who once dated Carmela got into an arguement with Lash moments before his death and he instantly becomes a suspect when Detective Babcock who is currently dating Carmella is clearly jealous and wants to lock him up and throw away the key but when Quigg asks Carmella for help to investigate she can't say now and with another murder Carmella may need Babcocks help after all.

Comical Characters made me an instant fan of the Scrapbooking Mysteries. I loved the drama between Babcock, Quigg and Carmella. Carmella was a relatable character and so reminded me of what I would do if I were in her romantic situation. I will surely be reading another book in this fast-paced murder mystery.

Altra piacevole lettura anche se mi dovevo immaginare che il colpevole era colui che sembrava avere niente a che vedere con l'assassinato, ma che continuava a comparire nella storia.

This is my first book by Laura Childs and it has quickly started a new obsession for me. This month I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and try reading more Mysteries and Cozy Mysteries in particular so of course, I had to turn to Childs for this. Although this is the fourteenth book in the Scrapbooking Mystery series, I found it very easy to follow into the story.

All of the characters in this book are larger than life. This is especially true for Marcela and Ava, the two leads who are best friends. In this particular book, Marcela and Ava witness the death of a well-known but well-hated restaurant critic and because Marcela’s ex was seen getting in a heated argument with him last, he’s the lead suspect. Now her ex is trying to get his name cleared and because Marcela’s hot beau Edgar Babcock is the lead investigator on the case, he asks Marcela if she can help him out.

This naturally creates some tension as Marcela tries to keep her investigating a secret but as you know, no amateur sleuth can get to the bottom of things without getting herself into trouble.

I absolutely loved this book. I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the New Orleans setting just because I do think it’s been featured in so many other books that I didn’t think there would be anything new or interesting that Childs could bring to the story, but I was wrong. New Orleans is fabulous. I loved the personality it brings to the book and also it makes for a really fun atmosphere for the characters to play in.

Possibly my favorite thing about this book is the characters. Every single person is so fun and energetic. This book keeps you on your toes but also there’s a great balance between the suspense and the humor. There are so many fun, great scenes in this book that I’m sure you’ll find yourself laughing if you try this book out.

If you haven’t tried many cozy mysteries before, then this is a good place to start. Childs lays out the clues in a way that you can’t miss them, but at the same time, she’s good as throwing you off track so that there is a challenge when guessing who the killer is. This book really is absolute perfection. And now that I’m hooked, I’m happy that I have so many other books of Childs’ to devour.

Restaurant critic Martin Lash’s reviews are nasty. So nasty that they are causing some restaurants to lose business. When Lash is murdered at the Winter Market, there are a ton of suspects including Carmela Bertrand’s ex-boyfriend, Quigg Brevard. Quigg begs Carmela to help prove his innocence despite the fact that it upsets her current boyfriend Detective Edgar Babcock.

Along with her best friend, Ava, Carmela begins her own investigation. They discover there were many people ready to kill Lash. It’s up to Carmela to prove that one of them did it and that Quigg is innocent. However, Carmela’s efforts could prove to destroy her relationship with Babcock.

This is the 14th book in the “Scrapbooking Mystery Series”. I’ve only read the first one and now this one. It didn’t hurt my reading experience to not read #2-13, but I absolutely want to read them. This is a wonderful series with well-developed characters. I want to catch up on the whole series and I will do it.

Laura Childs never disappoints with her books. Each one is crafted to perfection and this is no exception. Terri Farley Moran is another author whose books I enjoy, so I was bound to be pleased with this book. Pleased puts it mildly. I loved everything about this book. I even got a surprise-to-me ending. It certainly kept me on my toes. Bring on the next book in the series, please!

Another wonderfully crafted installment in the Scrapbooking Mystery series!

While still semi-new to the Scrapbooking Mysteries, I’ve really enjoyed the few I have read. CREPE FACTOR is a brilliant addition to this wonderful series! I was glued to my chair the entire time I was reading, finishing the book in one setting!

Author Laura Childs is a superb writer and is now joined in writing this series with another of my favorite authors, Terrie Farley Moran! They make a perfect fit for sure. Reading the books, you’d never know two writers were contributing. The quality storytelling in CREPE FACTOR is of a standard that many authors can only hope to achieve.

The murder in this story happens early into the book. With a twist you don’t often see, the victim was still alive when discovered . . . but not for long. And when protagonist Carmela agrees to help the accused murderer, it puts a strain on her relationship with her beau, Detective Edgar Babcock, because the accused is Camela’s former flame.

From the first page all the way through to the reveal, CREPE FACTOR was packed with all the elements readers look for in a stellar mystery. Returning fans are going to love this latest book.

Grab your own copy and be prepared for quite a ride!

When you’re done reading the story, don’t stop reading the book or you’ll miss out on crafting tips, recipes, and an excerpt from Laura Childs new Cackleberry Club Mystery, EGG DROP DEAD, coming in December 2016!

CREPE FACTOR is truly a fun, fun read! Even though I was unfamiliar with the characters starting out, they quickly became people I wanted to read more about and enjoyed getting to know them and their quirky personalities. There is a lot of humor sprinkled throughout the book, making it a lighthearted, entertaining read that kept me turning pages wanting to see what new mischief Carmela and Ava would get themselves in to. There were plenty of suspects and red herrings to keep the mystery appealing and me guessing. The authors captured the setting of New Orleans perfectly and I could see, smell, and taste that amazing city on the pages. I also loved that there are facts about New Orleans woven into the story along with “local” words that had me opening a dictionary to find out what they meant. I so enjoy learning while being entertained!

CREPE FACTOR is not only a fun, madcap romp through New Orleans and the bayou with memorable characters, the book provides inspiration and tips for scrapbooking along with several delicious recipes. I tried the recipe for Mini Cranberry Crab Cakes. They were super easy to make and provided a nice elegance to an appetizer platter. Perfect for upcoming holiday gatherings!

I enjoyed the story, but think the main characters are becoming too weird. Carmella is becoming wishy-washy and into herself. She and Ava drink all the time. Ava is a caricature of herself. Babcock is made to look like a buffoon.

Why are all the characters acting so strangely? The story was good, but please bring back the characters from the earlier books, the ones who really seemed to care about each other. Carmella was feisty, but demure and caring. Ava was not as trashy as she seems to be coming. Babcock was a hero not a bewildered buffoon. Get back to the real characters and the book would be 5 stars.

Carmela and her friend Ava are enjoying themselves at the Winter Market when a man drops dead at their feet. Well, it’s hard to live when someone has stuck a carving fork in your neck. When Carmela’s ex-boyfriend becomes suspect number one, she agrees to help clear his name. But they need to keep this little agreement secret from her current boyfriend, Detective Edgar Babcock. As you can imagine, Carmela is skirting the law in her investigations, and perhaps even putting herself - and her relationship with Babcock - in danger. Quirky characters in a twisty plot, dosed with humor, make for a fast and enjoyable read.

I absolutely love this series. I have been a fan since the first book in the series and each one just keeps getting better.
The holidays are keeping Carmela busy and her scrap booking store, Memory Mine is busier than ever.

Carmela and her best pal Ava are enjoying the booths at the winter Market, but when they see someone fall and die in front of them, it shakes them both to the core.
The victim is Martin Lash, a very mean and rude food critic. It seems that Mr. Lash is known for his belittling reviews and no one is sad to see him gone.
Carmela knows she should stay out of this investigation, her love interest, Detective Edgar Babcock is not a fan of her sleuthing ways. Carmela had no desire to investigate the death of Mr. Lash until she finds out an old flame is at the top of the suspect list.

How far will Carmela go to help her old flame and will her investigation into the mess mean the end for her and Babcock?

Tune in October 4th and grab your copy of Crepe Factor, a deliciously, cozy mystery.

An entertaining light that has scrapbooking tips and Cajun recipes. It has been awhile since I visited with Carmella Bertram and her shop in New Orleans. I have always enjoyed my visits and I was not disappointed. Carmella and her friend Eva are in the French Quarters for a Halloween festival when they witnessed the murder of a restaurant critic, Martin Lash. Edgar Babcock, a homicide detective and Carmella, currently boyfriend decides that Quigg Brevard an ex-boyfriend is the killer. Carmella sets out to clear Quigg against Babcock's instructions to stay out of the investigation. The inquiry takes her to various restaurants, an on-line magazine, environments activists, home construction and the bayou of southern Louisiana.

Crepe Factor by Laura Childs is the 14th book in the Scrapbooking Mystery series. A food critic is murdered just after an altercation with restauranteur Quigg Brevard, Carmela's ex-boyfriend. He asks Carmela to investigate when he becomes main suspect. This book seems to be following the same pattern as previous books and is starting to get monotomous. Carmela's behaviour is getting more meddlesome and over the top. I thought the ending where she barges into an event to catch the murderer was stupid and reckless. There was no necessity for her behaviour. This series has been going downhill with the last few books.

I really enjoyed reading about New Orleans and all it's wonderful attractions. I have always heard that the food is excellent and there are so many things to see there. The author definitely intrigued me so much, I have to visit New Orleans soon. She makes the town come alive with wonderful descriptions and yummy food that I could almost smell. I especially love the main character Carmela.

Carmela has a quaint scrapbook shop. The ideas and creative projects make me want to go out and gather all the supplies and try them. I bet it would be fun to be surrounded by such a creative person. I would be in awe of Carmela because she is so darn cute and creative. She does have a little stubbornness going on and I think her boyfriend Edgar is ready to pull his hair out . He does not like her investigating a crime that he is in charge of. He did seem to be a bit put off by her at times. How is that Carmela seems to be at the right place at the wrong time? When she witnesses a murder of a well known restaurant critic, the chaos insues.

I give a lot of credit to the writing talent shown throughout this book. The author knows how to keep the reader glued to the story with fast action and characters that jump off the pages. Carmela can't help investigate the murder when "an old friend" becomes a suspect. I didn't really like Quigg that much. I felt like he was clingy and expected Carmela to clear his name without hesitation. To say that the murdered victim is not liked is an understatement. Who would like a person who gives such bad reviews of their restaurant that it seemingly stops customers from coming? The list of suspects start adding up and Carmela is in the thick of it.

The book is fast paced and has twists that I really was surprised at. The investigation takes a weird turn and boy did it become an edge of your seat page turner. Is Carmela in over her head this time? Can she clear her friend's name before something happens to her? Get ready for another fun adventure with Carmela and her friend Ava as they find themselves unraveling secrets that could be destroy someone.

I received a copy of this book from The Great Escapes Virtual Book Tour. The review is my own opinion.

When Carmela and her best friends find a victim dying in front of them, they could not expect that this will be the least of their problems... Their nightmare has just started!

Carmela is a different heroine, has a scrapbook shop and her boyfriend is a detective; and in her spare time tries to solve mysteries without being killed, of course!
Carmela seems a fresh and funny character, but I didn't like very much her attitude or her love for alcohol that drinks during all the book... And I was quite surprised with her boyfriend, the detective Babcock, their contact is almost nonexistent and I am still waiting for an apology for his part for being so rude and childish in all the case... maybe in the next book?
This is one of these cases were the police doesn't appear till the mystery is solved, but let me tell you that there are a lot of suspects and none of them has my sympathy, everyone has a motive and none of them has a clear alibi. It will be your job to try to solve this mystery before the last page, this is the funny part of reading a murder case, is it?
I loved the idea of a Scrap Mystery, and I didn't know this is the 14th of the series, so if you like a different case, this one is for you!

I’ve been interested in cozy mysteries for some time now. I found this one randomly at work right before Christmas. It takes place in New Orleans in December…so that was really interesting to me since I live close to New Orleans and planned to do a bunch of holiday events there. The major appeal was the Winter Market that was described in the synopsis. It sort of lead me to believe it would be a quaint little Orleans story, and it was for the most part. New Orleans was described in great detail and It actually made me look at the map a few times. It really made me want to explore more of the city.

The characters were written great in my opinion. I noticed some reviews were saying that they changed a lot from previous books, but I cant really comment on consistency since I haven’t read any other books yet. I’d imagine it would be hard though, 14 books in, to keep the characters from being stagnant while also keeping them true to themselves. I do plan on reading more books very soon, so I will have a better idea then. The only slight issue I had was with Squirrel and Mooney. I guess they are supposed to be light, fun characters…but they kind of seemed like weird, uncouth to me. I guess that’s a little harsh.

I really enjoyed the plot. The actual mystery related elements were spread out pretty far but the filler bits, society events, scrapbooking, etcs. were fabulous. Gave me such high hopes for the rest of the series. I did figure out the who of the mystery pretty early on… I just didn’t know how or why. It was a pretty interesting crime concept. The only thing that seemed pretty silly was the confrontation and reveal at the end….seemed way to chaotic and dramatic. They could have easily waited outside with handcuffs. In real life, debacles like that ruin peoples reputation….but I guess bookland is different. And I understand that books need to have a big finishing.

I will definitely be reading more in this series as well as other series from this author. I already got another book and am excited to crack it open. This author is consider a “thrillzy” writer…that means thriller/cozy mystery…woot. Maybe my new favorite subgenre.

I really enjoyed this armchair visit to New Orleans during the Christmas holiday season! It is only the second in the series that I have read so far (and plan to catch up); it can be read as a standalone.

Imagine that you have been dating a police detective for a couple years, and one of your ex-boyfriends has been determined to be the suspect in a grisly murder committed at the festive Winter Market. Because you have been able to solve more than a few mysteries in the past, he asks you to help him. Since your boyfriend has asked you to not do any more sleuthing, you (out of loyalty to the man who is still your friend) agree to help find the real killer.

That is where Carmela finds herself, along with in a real pickle with Detective Edward Babcock when he figures out you are helping Quigg, owner of restaurants and a vineyard. BFF Ava understands the loyalty Carmela has and, fearful of her safety, joins Carmela on some of her fact-finding missions, even deep into the bayous. It turns out that the murder victim has enemies and is involved with many interesting ventures.

It was so much fun to visit Carmela and Ava again! As the story takes place before the Christmas holiday, Carmela is swamped at work (no pun intended) with giving classes and helping those who come into her scrapbook shop. Her very capable and likable assistant helps not only with computer searches about the murder victim but also adeptly takes care of most of the customers. The characters are very likable, at least until one begins to uncover who the real bad guy/ gal might be.

The plot is very well written and executed by the two delightful authors of this novel; the twists bring up new information that keep the reader hopping. It is not easy to try to figure out who the real killer is, or who all might be involved in the layers of mysteries as Carmela and Ava race to the finish. CREPE FACTOR is very satisfying, especially when one considers the setting of the mystery as well as how the primary characters fit together. I highly recommend it!

This was garbage.

I made it to about 100 pages before it ended and just skipped to read the last chapter. I don't know if in those 100 pages Carmela told Babcock about that kiss but she's just as scummy as Shamus. She was also an asshole throughout this whole book. Why would Babcock want to marry someone who is constantly keeping secrets and going around behind his back? And when does Carmela ever do things that Babcock may want to do? No wonder he was cranky.

She's also aggressively nosy, I'm surprised nobody has given her a good slap in the face.

Ava is a whole exaggeration of herself. And her dialogue, who the hell is that written for? What level of unintelligence do you have to have to enjoy it?

Actually so much of the 'sayings' in here, ex. "Abso-sugar-lutely!", is so damn childish, unrealistic and just stupid. Again, WHO THE HELL IS THIS WRITTEN FOR? WHAT LEVEL OF UNINTELLIGENCE DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE TO ENJOY THIS??

And how many houses do these two tramps break into? How many wine and cheese parties must they go to? How are both their shops surviving when they keep leaving at any given time to go do something?

And don't get me started on Gabby. I wish her stupid ass would get strangled by one of her many ugly pencil skirts.

Also, ZERO mystery.

It's too bad this series has just fallen so disgracefully. It started out so good and these last couple of books are repetitive trash (although the last one I read wasn't as bad as this one).

Call me crazy, but when I pick up a book with "A Scrapbooking Mystery" on the cover, I expect scrapbooking to play a part in the story. This book did not deliver that. In fact, it almost seemed like Carmela considered her scrapbook store a hindrance in her life--she was always leaving it in the hands of her assistant to go off investigating something. I felt like wine, cheese, art, food, and a number of other things were more prominent in this book than scrapbooking (or even papercrafts). This book could have been an entry in another series and worked just as well--or perhaps even better--than it did as a scrapbook mystery.

The scrapbooking tips at the end didn't come up in the story much (other than the crepe paper one that might tie into the crepe paper class that Carmela had in her store) nor did the recipes included in the book (though a couple of them do sound interesting to try).

All in all, I'd say it was a disappointing outing. Which makes me sad, because I enjoy Childs's tea series (or at least I have in the past) and I know I've read other books in this series that did deal more with scrapbooking and papercrafts. I'm somewhat inclined to side with my friend (MJ) who said that there are better scrapbooking mystery series out there if this was the only one I had to base my decision on.

This is only getting a second star from me because I understand it’s meant to be a “cozy mystery” and not just a “mystery”. (I’ll also admit to experiencing the tiniest burst of excitement at the climax of the story. And the title gets points for being cute as hell.) This is a book that succeeds at what these cozy mysteries mainly aim to do; be consumed with ease. That is to say, there is no depth. Which isn’t always an issue in this genre, but the redeeming factor in similar books are the characters. These fully grown adults we’re met with all come across as unbelievable and damn near juvenile in both their words and actions. Especially the protagonist. Stuck with her point of view throughout the whole book, it’s impossible to get around her snobbish and outrageously selfish attitude. Pair that with the toxic, stupidly immature relationship and it’s just a pure joy suck. Overall, a pretty soulless book. If you told me it was written in a week, I wouldn’t be surprised. I won’t be revisiting Laura Childs work.

Sad to say I think I'm going to have to shelve this series from now on. I first fell in love with Childs' Indigo tea mystery series, and then read several of these scrapbooking installments as well. It seems that with both series though lately, that the author no longer cares much about her creations.

With Crepe Factor, for the full first half of the book, it felt less like a cozy mystery and more like a really long food, wine and cocktail menu. I know this book is set in the party capital of New Orleans, and I'm no teetotaller myself, but you could practically get drunk just reading this story. There was more alcohol in it than at an LSU frat party.

Also (and I admit I've skipped around this series a bit so may not have the full picture) but the boyfriend/police detective character was a bit of an asshat IMO.

The mystery improved as the book went along, and for that reason, I give it two stars. Can't recommend this one, but I will point cozy mystery readers to earlier books in the series.

I usually enjoy Laura Childs' mysteries. Once you discount the problem with any cozy mystery, that any one person would discover that many dead bodies, her books are a fun piece of fluff for a relaxing few hours.

Unfortunately although her other series are consistent, this one has gone down hill. The
last two books have been "co-authored by Terry Moran, and I wonder if Child s had a hand in the book at all. The characters have become charictures of themselves. Carmella has become wishy washy, Babcock has become a grump and an incompetant, and fun loving Ava has become an alcoholic slut. The plots and the sprinkling of clues and red herrings has taken a nose dive as well. I spotted the motive and villains soon as introduced. I may be a glutton for punishment, but I will read the newest book in the series hoping it will be better. It couldn't be much worse.

I was very pleased to receive book 14 ahead of the October 4th release and today I am pleased to share with you a bit about the book and the conversation I had with Terrie Farley Moran about the writing process. But first a few thoughts about the book...
Reading Crepe Factor I was whisked away to the holiday winter market and was enjoying myself right away, as if I was one of the girls, then a particularly horrifying experience for the reader and the girls as they witness the last few moments of a mans life! Springing into action and against her better judgment Carmela is torn between interfering and putting her relationship with her boyfriend on the line to help out an old flame with lots to gain. This was a very interesting mystery and a great addition to the series.

Although a bit formulaic, this series still has plenty of life in it. Just a fun read with plenty of good food references thrown in and a general sense of craziness. As with the other cozy series I read, after I finish one of these, I feel like I've been out to a long boozy lunch with old friends.

Kept me on the edge of my seat. Carmela leads us all on a few adventures that gets dangerous and finally leads us to the murderer.

I was given this book by a good friend, So I was stepping out of my ordinary comfort zone, being different types of people. This book was a real hoot in a good way, I am glad I gave it a chance and read it through to the end. It taught me not to judge a book by its cover literally.

The cover was fitting for the main character with all of her talents and confidence and her elegant dress and subtly grooming, but she was far more complicated than just a talented shop keeper much bigger than what her scrapbooking shop would have seemed to portray. I found that I really liked Carmela Bertrand a smart and a very resourceful lady who could play tough but at the same time was caring and fair, her promises to people were taken seriously.
Her best friend was a beautiful and extremely sexy lady with a flair for attracting attention. Ava who had a trendy gothic little shop called 'JuJu Voodoo' just across the street and on the same busy block as Carmela's shop in the very popular area called the French Quarter in New Orleans. Carmela had been married twice before and was in love once again with Detective Edgar Babcock. Carmela had no children from either marriage except for her two dogs that were her babies, Boo and Poobah who she must share with her first husband. Ava on the other hand is a playgirl, the men in her life are only there for her entertainment and hopefully they are well off enough so she can get as much out of them as she can, except for her recent conquest who she gave a pet name of Roman Numeral. He worships the ground she walks on, although he happens to be quite wealthy and titled. It is all fun and games for Ava...
Both women's shops were very busy and in spite of all of that they both have very active personal lives, much of it together as it turns out. Because things just keep happening good and bad and it seems mostly bad at this time.
Many things are going wrong and a lot of them are out of the girl's control and yet they are the only ones that can solve them or know the right people who they can depend on that can and will help them get to the bottom of these catastrophic events that were created by ongoing collusion and murders!
An excellent read with a little bit of everything, I am now ready for another 'Scrapbook Mystery' by 'Laura Childs'

I almost forgot there are also several ideas for the readers who are into crafting, things that we could make just as if we went to Carmela's shop to learn how, also some tasty treats, real French Quarter dishes that you might want to cook up for your family and friends.

I really enjoyed journeying back to New Orleans and the crazy lives of Carmela Bertrand and her sidekick, Ava Grieux. As expected in a Childs' book, a murder takes place in the first chapter, this time while Carmela and Ava are exploring the booths at the Winter Market. Having just encountered friend and restaurateur Quigg Brevard arguing with a man about Quigg's food at his booth, the girls are shocked when a short time later the same man stumbles out of another booth with a large meat fork stuck in his throat. Naturally others witnessed the argument, so Quigg becomes the prime suspect. He begs amateur sleuth, Carmela to investigate for him, since he feels the police will look at this as an open and shut case. This of course causes tension with Carmela's boyfriend, police Detective Edgar Babcock, when he finds out Carmela is involved, especially since Carmela was once a romantic interest of Quigg's. Once the inquiry begins, Carmela finds out the murdered man, Martin Lash, was director of the Environmental Justice League and a part time food critic for the blog Glutton for Punishment. Yes, Childs does have a way with words that keeps the reader laughing. Lash and Quigg had been arguing about a bad review, but it turns out other restaurant owners had received the same treatment. Also, Lash had additional enemies stemming from his environmental interests, so the suspects begin to mount up.

Childs' quirky characters and humor sprinkled throughout, help to lighten up even such a seemingly grotesque murder. Her descriptions of Ava's style and outlook on life are a hoot. Carmela always seems to find a bit of danger as she takes risks that annoy and scare Babcock. The city of New Orleans becomes a character in this series itself. I've never been there, but feel right at home as Carmela takes the reader through the history, culture, architecture, and cuisine in pursuit of the solution to the mystery. These are quick, easy, and enjoyable reads.
