Probably one of the only webnovels where the male MC is not only surronded by a lot of beautiful women but they are even proper characters with their own full personality and even more astonishing so not his harem. Wonderfully refreshing. Mostly because most decent ones end up with a harem. And the harem is almost never well done.

I'll have to knock stars off a potentially good novel due to the author's regular injections of propaganda.

I'm sure many of those handing out five stars for this novel don't realize that almost all Chinese authors will inevitably inject their feelings of superiority of Communism and ethnicity over Western civilization. For race, Chinese authors tend to refer to the superiority of the "Hua" in their novels, which is referencing back to Chinese. Now, I didn't see author Er Mu glorify this often made point in his novel (to his credit), but you have to be blind to miss his frequent touting of Communism (in his novel this would be represented by "City Hall" and "the administration") over western political systems (represented by the "nobles" and "the Church").

And yet, most of the modern conveniences and developments he introduces as an Isekai traveler are developments originating from Western civilization--a fact I'm sure Er Mu conveniently ignores.

It's fine if you disagree with this being an issue, but if you were to read more translated Chinese novels, you'll quickly see what I mean as these themes reoccur time and time again.

I'm sure if I wrote a fantasy novel where my main character ends up in China and has to go about replacing a corrupt, inept, and backward governing system that was Communism with a Western based political system it would be overwhelmingly thumbed down by Chinese readers.

Se você gosta do gênero Alta Fantasia e quer ler algo totalmente diferente do usual, recomendo que leia esse livro. Garanto que você nunca leu nada parecido com esse livro.
Título: Liberte Aquela Bruxa (放开那个女巫 na língua original, Release that Witch
em inglês)

Autor:Er Mu

Língua lida: Inglês. Primeiramente traduzida pela Volarenovels nesse link , depois continuada pela Qidian Internacional nesse link

Tem em português: sim, está sendo traduzido por 3Lobos nesse link

Sinopse do site do tradutor:

Veja a capa do livro, veja o título, veja a sinopse.

I read a lot more of this book/web series than I should have considering that I never really jelled with it almost from the start. I think what kept me reading was the similarity between this and the Arch Magus series by Michaels Sisa. I don't know which series came out first (nor care really), but the main premise of both stories are eerily similar:

An intelligent/powerful person from a different time/place is body swapped into a spoiled young nobleman who has been given charge of an out of the way town. The nobleman they have replaced is a horrible human being who was a sexual predator mixed with Prince Joffery from Game of Thrones. They are also the underdog in a competition to prove themselves so that they might one day be king. This person uses their advanced knowledge to turn this town into something much more than it has any right to be just in time to fend off a bigger conflict that is facing the kingdom as a whole.

The biggest difference (regarding the overall premise) of course is that this series has witches in it, but honestly, it's not that much of a difference. The characters in the arch magus series are magical in nature and are given a massive boost from knowing the body swapped character, so it almost evens out here as well.

However, where these series really split from each other is in quality. I absolutely loved the Arch Magus series as it quickly gets you invested in the characters, the setting and the conflict. This book on the other hand does none of these things.

The main character is, strangely, the least developed of all the characters. We get some really quick back story on him in the first chapter, and then after that, we learn nothing more about this character. He never seems to miss his home, his family or his old friends, he doesn't question the journey he is on, and for all intents and purposes, his old life doesn't exist. We don't even get much character motivation for him other than simply wanting to do stuff because... why not?

The witches are a little more fleshed out, but not by much. They at least get backstories and motivations, but it's not nearly so much that you grow attached to any of them in the 200+ chapters that I read.

About the best thing I can say for this book is that the premise is really cool, but that brings us full circle back to the Arch Magus comparison as I think that is a far superior series.

The final thing I want to note about this book is how creepy it is regarding how it sexualises minors. At first, I put this down to some translation issues (of which there were quite a few), but as the story progresses you start to realise that yes this older man is dressing up teenage girls in what is basically a slutty witch costume, and as the novel goes on the girls get younger. It never actually crosses a definitive line, but it was more than enough to make me continually grow more uncomfortable with every chapter, especially as the number of witches grew and their ages went down.

So overall I don't see what the hype is about with this one, and I recommend trying other things instead. For people fascinated with the premise, then I recommend Legend of the Arch Magus, but for people who like the long web series format, I recommend He Who Fights Monsters by Shirtaloon, or Mother of Learning by Domagoj Kurmaic.

This book is a hugely popular web novel in Asia that is currently produced as a popular manga and is being scouted for both an anime and a t.v. series. It follows the story of an young engineer who is reincarnated into the body of a drunken, foppish prince in a fantasy/15th century European world.
Roland, the hero, quickly realizes he’s in a political death match with his four Siblings, greedy nobles, other nations and the Church. Also, something much worse and deadlier lurks in the frozen north and has begun to move. His father, the King, had given each of his children a province to rule with the prize (after five years) being the Crown to the best ruler. Roland, being a debauched idiot, was given a poor border province with many problems , but using his modern education and the discovery of magic used by persecuted witches, he begins to develop his kingdom.
The book is patterned after Game of Thrones ( “Song of Ice and Fire” get this books’ title?), but done very, very well. There’s plots within plots, a lot a detailed action, feminist political theory, military campaigns, gut wrenching horror, surprises galore and realistic problem solving- (involving detailed descriptions of chemical engineering and metallurgy) and it’s a pretty good love story too. The series is interesting, educational and a very, very fun read. The series is now completed after 1500 chapters. The ending was awesome- and unexpected.

Great story with some nice character designs and vast, interesting world but it has some flaws. MC has so versatile knowledge and superior memory that it's sometimes too much (especially given his normal background, no preparation time and zero "superpowers", it's impossible for any mechanical engineer or any other engineer to accomplish something even remotely similar to what Roland did in such a short time and without painfully reinventing tons of little annoying things and prototyping).

I deducted three stars from an otherwise well-executed plot and world build for the novel. My deduction is based on the veiled Chinese propaganda weaved into the story, and yes, I've read all the way past the 900 page mark or so.

You won't easily see the propaganda I'm speaking of because it becomes apparent once you've read enough Chinese novels and manhuas to see it again and again. Some examples would be how the Church is evil and the Pope is rotten. The nobility is clearly portrayed as from Western history and, of course, they too are rotten to the core. But fortunately, our MC shows up to institute Chinese-style governing - wages are fixed, farmers must sell to only a single buyer - the gov't - and the price they are paid is also fixed. The MC also proclaims once he's king, all nobility in the nation will have all their power abolished and keep only their titles. I believe this also included the forfeiture of their property and holdings, much in line with how Chinese communism would view those living in the West.

I also saw his naming of the new long range artillery cannon was done in typical fashion for the eastern culture. Well, I have to at least give the author credit for not laying it on as thick as Starting From Today I'll Work as a City Lord.

As I said, you won't detect what I'm speaking of until you've read enough other Chinese to English works. Only then will you begin to see commonalities of propaganda.

This was my first webnovel and my second chinese book. Like the previous one, there were some weird sentences and translations, but way less than in the other book I read. The concept of this story was great, it reminded me a bit of Crusade in Jeans. But with added fantasy in the form of witches. it was also a lot less believable, with the amount of technological advances this person thought up. There was some weird anti-western sentiment at times. (Like a mediaval general? looking at him using chopsticks and commenting they seemed way more useful than knife and fork) I've never met anyone who thought that the first time they saw/tried chopsticks. There are certainly advantages to chopsticks, but the same can be said for knife and fork. The budding romance thing is weird, with how young the girls are compared to the prince who is (was?) about 40 in the modern world. creepy.

Basically a power fantasy and harem where the protagonist better than everyone else and is also a wanna be dictator. I am not sure what is it with chinese novels and super trashy protagonist, but this one fits it perfectly. There were also scene where the protagonist was pushing people to snitch on their neighbour for some things. I read a long time ago and only remember these things, wish i had never read this in the first place

A really solid read, it manages to make most of the developments look realistic and believable.

A common complaint might be the main character is too smart, and indeed there are some cases in which he knows things many people don't, but considering he was working as a mechanical engineer before "crossing over" is good enough to explain it. Most of the chemistry displayed is indeed basic, but other things, like the composition of gunpowder and other technical explanations are more niche knowledge and it makes sense he knew all that stuff only if he were also a weapon enthusiast (which could very well be, but is not mentioned). This is just a minor complaint as in any case it doesn't detract from the story and I have to say it is refreshing for once noticing how the author has done his research and will even take some time to explain things, even if to a basic level (and make it understandable I think for most readers).

The plot seems basic enough, but there are some twists which make it more interesting than one might expect. There is more than one "villain", and indeed calling them that is trivializing the characters, as every organization (and person) acts with their own interests in mind.. but this doesn't mean they don't believe to be doing the right thing for everyone, even while committing cruel actions (e.g. the Church). Some characters at times risk becoming one dimensional, but that is avoided with some by.. well, making them die, and with others (like Timothy) by giving us an opportunity to see things from their perspective and their thoughts.

With time, the story starts going towards the path of "kingdom building", with the main character using his knowledge to kinda anticipate the industrial revolution; this of course only possible because of the help of witches... who yes, can use magic. I won't spoil much about this, but their abilities, while seemingly limited, are interesting, and their magic power comes with its cost.
I won't spoil.

There were a couple of really well written moments. In particular the funeral they held after one of the battles with the monsters (volume 2 - chapter 68) and when the alchemist was confronted with a couple of high school level chemistry formulas, which revolutionized his way of thinking. I also liked the very light way the author handled romance.

Overall it is a nice read, and while not perfect, combines well a fantasy setting (witches, monsters, devils..) with a medieval one, while still dealing with kingdom building, knowledge about chemistry/weapons/metalworking/steam engines.., politics a little bit... while still using several side characters to further how realistic this world looks. Unless the author really messes up, this is one of the best series I have read.

This is one of those webnovel series that you would never regret sacrificing your sleep, energy, and time for as it really has a very enjoyable plot, thoughtfully written characters, and a good mix of humor, romance, drama, and action. However, there were definitely some pieces of information that someone with a critical eye would be put off with, but if you just focus on the interactions of the characters and the world-building that this series brings, you would definitely appreciate this a lot.

The isekai hero is someone who's actually just a very ordinary guy who studies engineering. There's nothing exceptional about him apart from all the knowledge that he has, from being in a modern civilization, that can change the book's universe as the setting is in a medieval age where the church hunts witches, treating them as demons. Nonetheless, the author still did a good job in providing him some fun interactions with the other characters in the book, giving us enough entertaining content. So contrary to what usually happens in most books, in this case, it is the side characters that are truly the highlight. I won't go much into detail about each of them as there's a lot. In a nutshell, the only flaw is probably how the main character was written but nonetheless, it doesn't diminish the overall quality of the series

The book starts with the main character Cheng Yan waking up in a place he does not know but not on a bed but at a trial for the execution of a women and because he does not know what is happening so he called for the trial to end and to do it tomorrow because he is tired the knight commander is not happy about this because he is afraid of the church coming down on their heads for heresy. Cheng Yan was reincarnated into the body of the fourth prince of the kingdom who is known for being a womanizer and a coward and a all around disgrace to the royal family. Later he finds out that the women is on trial for being a witch so he thinks it is hogwash going by his logic of how the witch hunts went on earth but he is no longer on earth as he later finds out witches have special powers to them otherwise they are just like us. Later he works to establish a self reliant town where witches can live free without prosecution. The woman's name is Anna and she has the ability to control fire another witch that he finds is nightingale and she has the ability to walk through solid surfaces and to discern truth and lies. Well I should say she finds him because her job was to rescue Anna if she was in danger and to kill Roland if Anna was in danger but she judges that Anna is safe with Roland.

(whole series)

4.0

The existence of Sleeping Island was a bit of a letdown, for lack of a better term. Roland accepting witches and establishing a safe haven for them was seen as this miraculously unprecedented act, as was the discovery that regularly using one's magic powers saves your life during the bite. But then we're told someone else already accomplished that and more successfully - already having amassed 20x the witch population!

I didn't like the trajectory of the story after the fall of the Church as much. Unlike the demons, the Church was a cohesive and tangible enemy whereas the demons were these generic evil monsters you can barely communicate with. Worse, the demons didn't even consider humans their major enemy as they focused more on the Sky-Sea Realm. We barely got to know anything about them and they sounded far more interesting than some run-of-the-mill demons.

The Dream World felt random and it clashed with the actual story.

The romance was also a bit frustrating. Nightingale barely managed to become a side hoe after dangling for almost a decade. She also (seemingly) had more scenes than Anna, was with Roland almost 24/7 and most importantly she wasn't boring as shit like Anna.

Second read through review: started out 5 stars with interesting interconnected side plots and wonderful world building. I’m not sure if it’s because I had to reread this due to it initially being only half written, but the later half and especially the last fourth of the book is nigh impossible to enjoy. The romantic subplot is needlessly elongated, the civilization building became somewhat repetitive, and the other interesting side plots were dropped or set aside for other plot points. In the end everything built up into a complicated mess without any resolutions and I had to drop it. Especially when the author decided hiding information from the reader for suspense(?) was a good idea.

I “only” had about 200 chapters left to read but the boring wait period (suspense?) felt endless. I would rate this later half 2 stars.

- Dropped Ch 1278/1498

Ps. Apparently the ending is super rushed and many plot points are dropped. Also the things the author was hiding was never revealed. Glad I didn’t finish those chapter because a brief summary of the ending showed me all the amazing parts without any of the stupidity.

A traveler from a modern world gets transported to a medieval fantasy world with a unique magic system (Isekai), the book is filled with intrigue, mystery, action, war, kingdom building and humor. One of the best Chinese Webnovel I have read, started strong but lost steam by the end.

The review is for all the 1498 chapters

It stands out among the Chinese series in having a magic flintlock plot, actual characterization, and a non-wuxia world-building. I liked it a lot and was hooked all the way to the last 100-200 chapters. The story became torturous to read in the end and took me over a few months and a lot of willpower to complete.

The book is worth diving into and would rate it as 5/5 for 90% of the content. The last 10% is not even worth reading.

Not the typical fantasy webnovel, fight scenes are quite rare but whenever they do happen they have a lot of stakes in it. This book had one of my favourite fight scenes of all time (dk if I can even call it a fight scene, you'll know what I mean when you get there). The main focus is improving the living conditions of the people and has a bit of engineering concepts within it.

The MC does have quite the bit of plot armor (not on himself but you'll also know what I mean by this [maybe]), and I slightly disliked it but it didn't effect the enjoyment of the novel overall.

The plot is slow but thickens quite a bit the more you get into it and although it isn't comparable to the lore of LOTM and such it still has better lore than most of the WN that are available.

This was a fun book with some flaws. For example, the main character keeps having giant instances of dumb luck after another. Every time he wants to make a technological advancement he happens to find a new witch with just the right power, when he needs to investigate a murder, he happens to find a witch with just the right power. The romance I also found somewhat annoying. The society the MC tries to build is a flawed socialist country.

That being said, this novel is as good as Chinese novels get, and I enjoyed most of it.

Worth a read. The world building is in-depth and characters are fleshed out. However, sometimes I believe the issues and problems the characters face are too easily overcome such that they have not gone through difficult situations or lost much.

A nice introduction to the world, more information about the magic system would definitely be appreciated but it is justifiable in universe. As light novels go it's very enjoyable, if you're new to the genre it's a good starting point in the fantasy subgenre.

I stopped this because the story was progressing too slowly for my taste. It had a large focus on explaining scenarios and circumstances. Personally I read books for the characters and not long worldbuilding and book reports, so I dropped off.
