About the author

Sankarankutty Kunhiraman Pottekkatt (Malayalam: ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കുഞ്ഞിരാമന്‍ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട്), popularly known as S. K. Pottekkatt, was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala, South India. He is the author of nearly sixty books which include ten novels, twenty-four collections of short stories, three anthologies of poems, eighteen travelogues, four plays, a collection of essays and a couple of books based on personal reminiscences. Pottekatt won the Jnanpith Award in 1980 for the novel Oru Desathinte Katha (The Story of a Locale). His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages.

പാതിരാസൂര്യന്റെ നാട് ആണെന്നാണ് ഫിൻലാൻഡിനെ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. അവിടുത്തെ ജലജീവിതവും സാഹിത്യവും സാംസ്കാരവും വളരെ വിശദമായി തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം വിവരിക്കുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ എഴുത്തുകൾ വായനക്കാരെയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനോടൊപ്പം യാത്ര ചെയ്യിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ളവയാണ്. വളരെ ചുരുങ്ങിയ ദിവസങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം നമ്മൾക്ക് കാട്ടിത്തന്നത് വലിയ ഒരു ഭൂമി തന്നെയാണ്.

A nice travelogue.. being written in 1956, it gives a clear picture of the then Finland and a slight idea of the surrounding European countries at that time.. only the detailed description of Finnish literature given in the middle portion feels a bit too long. the life, culture and behavior of the Finnish people,the geography, nature, agriculture and specialties of Finland and a brief history of the country as on late 50's has been pictured interestingly. a good read...

This is my first travelogue in Malayalam and I am excited to have found the experience to be very deep. Either it's the beauty of the language or the masterful use of it, or my affinity to Finland owing to my own travel experiences. One or more of these have made this book very dear to me and I could personally relate to many observation and reflections of the author.
Anyway it's a must read if you like traveling and you need a unique perspective from half a century ago and from the mind of a master writer.

It's so cool, I mean.. to have written something like this back in the 1950s is a great job. With such detailing & enthusiasm, I was literally living with him in his world. The similes in expressing what he saw & learnt in those lands were fun & I'm quite sure it was entertaining for all who read this book. Remember learning his book "Kaappirikalude Nattil", back in school & since then a fan of SK.
