Every time I think I’ve read the best Melanie Travis Mystery, author Laurien Berenson proves me wrong!

I adore this series. Melanie is a great protagonist, and a lot of fun to read. The supporting characters all add so much to it. And of course, there are dogs! Melanie’s dogs, all five of them, have the greatest personalities. The way Berenson describes them, I get clear pictures in my mind of each and every one of them.

WAGGING THROUGH THE SNOW is another splendid installment in this wonderful series. An exceptional mystery that kept me guessing, and I still got it wrong. Author Berenson really knows how to throw plot curves into a story. By the time of the reveal, I was dizzy for all the twisting and turning!

Along with the mystery element, WAGGING THROUGH THE SNOW has a lot of laugh out loud moments. I had to wipe away tears during one particularly funny scene. I still find myself chuckling when I think back on it.

To be a shorter than normal cozy mystery, Ms. Berenson manages to pack in a lot of mystery, action, and hilarity into WAGGING THROUGH THE SNOW, without the story feeling rushed. She even gets a recipe in there for readers!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Look at the cute little face on the cover. I want one! but am restraining myself because my two canine companions would not like another dog in our house. At 14 years old, they are pretty set in their ways.

Melanie Travis is counting down the days until the holiday break at Howard Academy while taking care of the usual Christmas things at home. When her brother announces he has brought a Christmas tree farm without consulting his partner, Melanie’s ex husband, she is very surprised. Even more surprising in that her brother wants her to inform her ex about this “great deal”. The extended family all gathers to check out the place and discovers it needs a bit of work to open in time for the Christmas shoppers but together they think they can handle it. That is until they find a dead man in the woods. They also find a cute little dog by his side. The police rule it an accidental death but Melanie and Aunt Peg aren’t sure that is the case. They start their own investigation and find their aren’t too many people sad that the man is dead. Their suspect list seems to grow as each day passes until the killer turns their sights on Melanie, she stuck her nose into something that was not her business and she may be the next cold body her family finds.

This is a doggone great story especially if you love dogs like I do. Melanie and her husband, Sam have enough dogs in their house to form a doggie basketball team. They also have two sons, Davey and Kevin, so to say life at their house is busy is a huge understatement, but she still finds time to help her brother and tag along with her Aunt Peg at a moment’s notice. She is also close to her ex, Davey’s dad, and his new wife. I am always amazed at their organizational skills and patience as they juggle all these balls in the air. The character development is outstanding. The characters are real and so engaging. A strong blended family portrayal like this is heartwarming.

The mystery this time deals with a homeless man and his alcoholism that has driven almost all of his friends and family away. The plot leads us back in time to see how his life progressed until he was found dead. Melanie’s compassion shines as she tries to find answers and justice for a man she never met. While the story handles serious issues it is also full of laugh out loud moments. Ms. Bererson manages to merge everything together masterfully.

This series has been going strong for several years but don’t let that stop you from jumping in with this holiday story. Each mystery is contained to its book and the author gives you enough character information to never feel lost. I can’t promise that you won’t want to read previous installments though after reading this one. In fact I would be surprised if you didn’t. It is a terrific series.

Wagging Through the Snow is a perfect escape and the perfect holiday gift for any dog lover on your list. Don’t wait for the snow to fly before you get your copy!

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Christmas is on it's way in this cozy holiday novella. Melanie Travis is relaxing at home on a quiet weekend morning when her brother, Frank, stops by and stuns her with the news that he's invested in 10 acres of land that's a Christmas Tree Farm! Once past the initial shock, Frank and his business partner, Bob, plus the Travis Family and Aunt Peg all bundle up for a drive to have a look at the property. To start making a profit, the dilapidated office building needs quick repairs and updating so customers can began buying Christmas trees. In the midst of the adults planning session, Melanie's sons, Davey and Kev, find a dead man out in the woods. Under the frozen corpse is a tiny Maltese dog who Aunt Peg takes under her wing. Who is the homeless man? Why was he in the woods in the middle of winter? Was his death an accident or something sinister?

This story quickly became my favorite Melanie Travis Canine Mystery! It warmed me like a mug of hot chocolate--through the family relationships, the love they have for animals, and the compassion they show for those in need. For me, the mystery wasn't easy to solve. I thought I had the culprit pinpointed, but I was wrong. I enjoyed the humor in the plot, and one particular scene near the climactic end had me almost rolling on the floor! Ms. Berenson wraps up the all the details like a lovely Christmas present under the twinkling lights of a Christmas tree.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy for the author. All opinions are my own.

It is always a pleasure to read once of Laurien Berenson's dog stories. The cover is a delight. Frank and Bob have brought a Christmas tree farm that has lain idle for awhile. It will need a lot of repairs before it can be open for the season. The family met one to do the work. They work for some time when they heard a low moaning sound. At the source, they find a homeless man and a Maltese dog. Aunt Peg fosters The dog, Snowball and urged Melanie to look into his background. As Pete's background emerge Melanie will need her wits to save her life. I highly recommend this book and series.

Disclosure: I received a free copy from Kensington Books through NetGalley for an honest review. I would like to thank them for this opportunity to read and review the book. The opinions expressed are my own.

This was a really fun and fairly quick read set at Christmastime. I'm not quite as strict with myself in reading this series in order since for one thing, this was only my second I've read but I had read the 17th book before I even realized it was a series. Probably the only downside to not starting at the top would be not following the family development in order but it's easy to pick up on while reading.

Melanie Travis's brother Frank is Mel's ex-husband's (Bob) business partner and when he bought a Christmas tree farm without consulting Bob, Melanie thought he was nuts. When they all went to see it, they ran across the dead body of a homeless guy who people had only known as Pete. Of course Aunt Peg was always up for snooping so they went to where Frank had said Pete must have been staying, a shack on the property. Melanie found a class ring and starting with that, she was able to unravel a lot of things about Pete's life, some more confusing than others. Contrary to the town he lived in saying he was always a drunk, Pete's sponsor in sobering up swore that he had changed. Melanie felt the need to continue to prove that Pete was murdered.

I haven't read enough of these to really have a favorite character except for Aunt Peg. I guess because she's such a strong character. I kind of remember in the first book I read I wasn't sure if I liked her or not but she sure saved the day in this book! I had honestly not figured out the killer. The book was quick to read but well-written and plotted out. Sometimes I like to read a book that moves a little bit faster and of course I'm always a sucker for Christmas themes. I saw this at my library on the new shelf and since I'm always in favor of telling libraries I love cozy mysteries, I couldn't resist getting it. I do want to read more in the series, maybe I will actually start at the beginning who knows!

Once again Melanie's brother Frank has gotten himself in a tight spot. His impulsive purchase of a Christmas tree farm turns out to have more problems than just the dilapidated condition of the property.

This is a well written cozy mystery but what gives it an added edge is Melanie's wit and .sarcastic humor.

This is the 21st Melanie Travis Mystery! I have read them all and enjoy the interesting cast of characters both human and canine.

Wagging Through the Snow by Laurien Berenson is A Melanie Travis novella (technically it is the twenty-first book in the series). Melanie Travis is enjoying a quiet Saturday when her brother, Frank visits. It turns out that he made an impulsive purchase of Haney’s Holiday Home (a Christmas tree lot) in Wilton, Connecticut without the knowledge of his business partner, Bob (Melanie’s ex-husband). The family troops out to examine the property and finds the buildings are dilapidated. Everyone will need to work quickly to get it up and running for the Christmas season. Davey and Kevin come running inside. They heard a strange whimpering noise in among the trees. The noise is coming from a cute little Maltese hidden under a dead body. The victim is a local homeless man named Pete who had trouble with alcohol. It looks like Pete was killed by a falling tree limb but appearances can be deceiving. Melanie with Aunt Peg’s assistance (of course) sets out to discover more about Pete and who could have wished him harm. Can Melanie wrap up this case before Santa comes sliding down the chimney or will she find herself stuffed in a body bag?

Wagging Through the Snow is well-written, engaging and has a good pace (which makes for an easy to read story). I like the characters and most especially the lively dogs. There is just the right amount and type of humor in this delightful tale. There were some definite laugh out loud moments. My rating for Wagging Through the Snow is 5 out of 5 stars (I loved it). It is short, but packed full of action. The mystery was compelling and the elements are revealed as the story progresses. One clue gave away the identity of the killer to me. I think many readers will be surprised when the culprit is revealed. I was glad that the story was not rushed (it happens frequently in short stories). The ending was heartwarming. Wagging Through the Snow is my favorite A Melanie Travis Mystery. This delightful cozy has engaging characters, good mystery, adorable dogs, humor, family, friends, and the spirit of Christmas.

If you love dogs and mysteries, you should take the time to read Laurien Berenson’s novels.  She does a wonderful job portraying the unique personalities of dogs, in particular standard poodles.  Wagging Through the Snow is a light mystery that s perfect for an evening relaxing with a cup of cocoa.  The mystery isn't much of a puzzle, but that doesn't mean it isn't easy to enjoy.  Melanie Travis and her family are fun to observe and easy to like.  But if you are looking for a serious hard bitten mystery this will not be your cup of tea.  This is simply a light holiday cozy.

When Melanie’s brother buys a dilapidated Christmas tree farm, it comes with an unexpected addition - a dead body accompanied by a small Maltese.  At first it looks like the homeless man died accidentally while drunk.  But a friend of his is adamant that he stopped drinking several months before.  As Melanie and her Aunt Peg have  plenty of experience investigating murders, it is no surprise that Melanie begins poking around, looking into the man’s past.  His alcoholism left a trail of destruction in its path, and no one seems particularly unhappy that Pete is dead - but was something in his past enough to cause him to be murdered?

Wagging Through the Snow is an enjoyable mystery, perfect for de-stressing after a long day.  If you are looking for a nice, family friendly holiday mystery, it’s a great choice.

4 / 5

This is another good read from the author of all those poodle mysteries. This time instead of showing dogs, Melanie is helping her brother run a Christmas tree farm.
A homeless man dies on the land, and his little Maltese terrier needs a home. Melanie and her husband, kids and aunt try to find out more about the deceased, who had great prospects before his unfortunate slide into alcohol dependency. But a supporter arrives and says the dead man had got clean, and his being found smelling of drink makes no sense. Melanie starts wondering if someone wanted him dead and if so, why.

The poodles get to be lively family pets in this relaxed outdoor Christmas tale, and we get to consider those less fortunate in life. Great read.

I was so excited to get this book today, I took it out of the Amazon box and just immediately sat down and started reading it. I had other things I needed to do, and I'm reading 7 other books right now, and also, it's a Christmas-themed book and it's September, but I didn't care. I had a crappy day so I just tuned everything out and sat and read the whole book cover to cover.

This series has become one of my favorites. I love the characters, the writing is great and they are so much fun to read. A lot of the books in this series revolve around the dog show world, but this one doesn't. The book starts with Melanie's brother Frank somewhat impulsively buying a parcel of land which includes a Christmas tree farm, a few ramshackle buildings ... and a dead body! And a dog, of course.

This book is adorable. Not just the writing, but also the size. It's a smaller size in "height" than a regular hardcover book. It's NOT a short story, but it's a little shorter than normal (around 200 pages) -- it took me a little over 3 hours to read. It really would make the perfect Christmas gift for a book lover! And it has a recipe for Christmas cookies!

Princess Fuzzypants here:
Despite a decided lack of felines, I truly enjoyed this book. I loved the poodle pack and the adorable little Maltese. The little dog was discovered by the corpse of his human who was found frozen to death in the Christmas Tree farm Melanie’s brother has just purchased.
Initially it is thought the dead man died because he was drunk. Not a far-fetched idea but it turns out far from the truth.
Pete, the dead guy, was an alcoholic and a despicable character but had been sober and was trying to reconnect with the people he had wronged in his drunken stupor.
The police are not too concerned either way looking at Pete as human flotsam and not worth much effort. That gives Melanie a reason to try to find out what happened. She is very good at it although she is not confrontational like come cozy heroines. And when she gets into the inevitable face off with the murderer, it seems natural and not at all forced.
She has a delightful blended family and there is a gentle humour to the characters and the story, It was an enjoyable read either at the holiday season or any time.
I give it five purrs and two paws up.

A delightful series with funny, wacky & lovable characters and dogs. Melanie Travis raises and shows purebred standard size poodles and solves murders. When her brother buys a Christmas tree farm on a whim, Melanie has to get him straightened out. Her ex-husband is her brother's business partner so it is another family disaster. As the family pitches in to renovate the farm's office and get the business up and running, the body of a homeless man is found in the snow. Huddled inside his coat is a purebred Maltese who is still alive. Murders, families and wonderful dogs make this a must read series. You can start with any book and feel comfortable, the author gives plenty of background to keep you straight on the characters and background.

My only complaint about this latest in a long running series (and I've read them all) is that it's too short! Melanie and Aunt Peg find a dead man (Pete) and his (live) Maltese at the Christmas tree farm her brother and ex have just purchased. Geez. As always, Melanie will investigate, Peg will comment, the poodles will poodle, and the kids, relatives, and everyone else will just entertain you. There's nothing too deep about this book and it's not twisty or complex- just right for a quick read when you want something fun. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. If you haven't read Berenson before, this is an easy intro to the series (you'll want to read more of them). If you have read her, this is a pre-holiday treat!

This short, clean, cozy mystery was very enjoyable to read and reminded me a lot of the Murder She Wrote books. Melanie's brother and his business partner buy a Christmas Tree farm in town when it goes up for auction after the owner dies. Not in the best of condition they are refurbishing the sales office when Melanie's older son discovers a dead body out in the tree groves. The police say the town drifter was drunk, fell when he got hit by a falling tree branch, and froze to death; but Melanie's instincts tell her otherwise. Melanie along with her poodles join her Aunt and the drifter's dog to discover what really happened. With lots of suspects, this book kept me guessing until the very end. Good read for a cold night.

Getting ready for Christmas and working at an elite academy is hard enough for Melanie Travis without the additional problems that her brother Frank and ex-husband Bob decide to bring to her door when they buy a Christmas tree farm only a few weeks before Christmas. The tree farm is a bit run down, but that is not the real problem. The real problem is that a dead body is found there, along with a full-bred Maltese. So Melanie is busy chasing clues, along with her beautiful standard poodle companion Faith, until she finally solves the mystery, with a little help from Santa. This is a cozy mystery with a yummy cookie recipe at the end!

Melanie is busy finishing up the school term and getting ready for Christmas, when she and her family are drafted into helping her brother and ex-husband ready a run-down Christmas tree farm for the season. Of course, when Melanie and her Aunt Peg are wandering through the trees, they find a body. The police quickly decide the old hermit had gotten drunk and frozen to death, but Melanie soon believes he was killed over something from his past. Who was willing to kill over something that occurred years ago? And will the Christmas tree farm be open to sell it's holiday cheer? Relax with a cup of hot cider and enjoy!

It's hard to believe that this is #21 in the Melanie Travis series. All the familiar people and dogs are back in this holiday offering. Melanie's brother buys an abandoned Christmas Tree farm on Thanksgiving weekend and thinks the family will be happy to help sell the trees. When they all go to view the farm they find a body with a small dog hiding underneath. With Aunt Peg taking charge of the dog and Melanie investigating the crime the family prepares for Christmas that is fast approaching. As always the poodles play a big part in the story and dog lovers will fall in love with Faith and the rest of the pack.

3.75 Hearts So this story is really cute. It is a short read of only about 100 pages so I wouldn’t say it will put you in a holiday mood because about the time you get into it it’s over.

I think one of the problems was I have never read one from this author or series before. I didn’t know this was #21 in the series and I think it would have been a bit better if I knew the characters from before. Now that being said the mystery is good and the story is very well written.

Melanie wants some peace this Christmas but her brother comes in telling her that he and her ex-husband have bought a broken down tree farm. When she goes out to look they find a dead body of a man, who turns out to be a hermit with a drinking problem. As she tries to find out more about him and his mysterious past she finds many dark secrets. An enjoyable Christmas mystery. It does have dogs in it, but not too much.

Very enjoyable cozy mystery. The scene is an old Christmas Tree farm with a homeless man dead in the snow. The local sleuth is on the case when the cops just shrug it off as another drunk passing out in the cold. Between the dogs & Aunt Peg, they add humor & dimension to the story. I really enjoyed the interactions of the characters.

Publisher's Description:

“If you like dogs, you’ll love Laurien Berenson’s Melanie Travis mysteries!” —Joanne Fluke, New York Times bestselling author

Melanie Travis needs a little peace from her busy life this Christmas. But the usual holiday hubbub is a joy compared to the killer surprise she finds tucked underneath the tree . . .
With a demanding teaching job at Connecticut’s elite Howard Academy and five poodles scampering around the house, Melanie barely has energy for the upcoming Christmas rush. But she unwraps an unexpected challenge when her brother and ex-husband, elated by the recent success of their country café, make a spontaneous bid on a dilapidated pine tree farm. Although the ten-acre lot had been a popular seasonal destination while the original owner was still alive, it’ll take some sprucing up—and a small miracle or two—before the neglected place is in shape for December.
Unfortunately, the impromptu business venture goes cold when the group discovers a purebred Maltese whimpering in the snow-covered grove—right beside a dead body. Pete, a squatter who camped out on the land, apparently met his end after a fallen fir tree branch knocked him on the head. But as Melanie and Aunt Peg investigate Pete’s history and the terrible habit that cost him everything, it’s clear his death was no accident. Now, Melanie must run through a flurry of likely suspects and muzzle a dogged murderer in time—or she’ll be next on someone’s deadly list.

My Thoughts:
I happily read this intriguingly comical mystery. It has been years since I read A "Pedigree to Die For" and the others of the first five novels in this series. I was showing dogs at the time and poodles was my breed of choice. The first book in the series"A Pedigree to Die For"with poodles on the cover and a murder and a dog show as the backdrop made this book and the subsequent titles of interest to me.
Since mysteries are not my genre of choice I had drifted away from this author but was thrilled to see a new one listed on NetGalley.
This book has all of the qualities expected from this reader of books from this author.
There is intrigue, mystery and a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. If your taste in books runs toward a cleanly written and teen friendly mystery you will love this book.
Get ready for the Christmas season with this newest Laurien Berenson, Melanie Travis Mystery. You won't be disappointed.
I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development. The expected inclusion of many happy and healthy characters of the canine variety is as always a bonus in this Christmas Mystery.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this lovely short read, from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Melanie is surprised when her brother and ex-husband show up to announce they are planning on buying the old Haney Christmas tree farm. As everyone works to clean up and repair the land and buildings. In the midst of clearing away the weeds and brush from around the trees Melanie and Peg follow a whining sound to a surprise. Lying on the ground is a deceased local homeless man named Pete and his little Maltese companion Snowball.

I know I keep thinking this is the best novel in the series yet, but it is true. Laurien Berenson manages to pull off a fresh plot for each new story. As always her characters are warm, friendly and well developed so that you feel you know them as friends and look forward to visiting with them again and again. She manages to bring the story to life with her words, Drawing pictures in our minds with her phrasings. Soon the scenes come to life vibrant life for the reader pulling them into the story so that they feel they are part of the action to take place.

My rating of "Wagging through the Snow - Melanie Travis Mystery Book 21" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.
