Sometimes fate drops your future on your lap; other times fate hides it right under your nose.

When Madison traded up for a gorgeous Victorian house in the New Orleans French Quarter, she thought she was getting away from her toxic life. Sure, the house was old and run-down, but it was hers, and it was exactly the fresh start she wanted.

But then she meets Remy, a mysterious, sexy witch with power, class, and charm to spare, and everything changes.

Unknown to Madison, her arrival in New Orleans sets in motion a chain of events that throws everyone’s life into disarray—not just hers. Now, pushed into the middle of an ancient war between vampires and witches, she must unravel the secrets of the house she's inhabiting before the forces awakened by her very presence rise from their centuries-old slumber, hungry and eager to feed on everything they can find.

Starting with her.

AudioBook Review:
Stars: Overall 3 Narration 2 Story 3

Set in New Orleans (where better for an Urban Fantasy story) as the protagonist Madison moves into her dream Victorian-style house in the French Quarter for a new start. But, the house has secrets, Madison’s move has set a fire under the never-ending but so far dormant conflict between the vampires and the witches. With her new friend Remy, a witch, in tow – the story moves along quickly with plenty of action.

Starting off a bit slow – the story arc with the mystery is the captivating factor here. Conversations and lingering questions about Madison’s background and her reasons for making all the changes to her life. Secondary characters arrive without appearing as flat or decidedly black and white – an element that added greatly to the intrigue and engagement as each new introduction brought yet another thread to the plot. While I found some of the conversations stilted, and there wasn’t a great deal of personality development for Madison – leaving her tottering on the edge of meh. Fortunately though, the plot and action did bring her into play a bit more, and while her focus on her present to the utter lack of any history was still concerning, I can only hope that her reasons and history will come forward as the series progresses.

Narration for this book is provided by Carly Robins and as it was my first encounter with her, while I expected a bit of adjustment time to acclimate to her voice and style, I’m saddened to think that I could never actually escape into the story as she performed it. Her tone is young – perhaps a bit too young for this character, with a little-girl breathiness that didn’t come off as the kick-ass heroine that I believe the author intended. Particularly frustrating was the odd choices made during the performance: for example “she walked, softly, slowly down the hall” was slower, whispered and presented as if intending to add gravitas or tension to the story. The choices she made didn’t work well for the story, and when I expect narration to enhance and even improve the impression left by a story on conclusion, this just fell flat.

I’m left thinking that the story needed some editing and focus to build and develop the characters with an intention to a reader’s connection, without having a connection to Madison the story is memorable for the mystery and unique actions, and little else

I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Ever had a book that started off on the wrong foot and then when you continued you ended up really enjoying it? That's what happened with this book. When I picked up this book I read the first 2 chapters and wasn't impressed. I couldn't get into the story, it felt like small pieces of explanation were missing, the conversations felt a bit stilted, it all felt a bit jumbled, the world didn't come alive and I didn't care about the characters. I decided to give it a few more chapters and I could always DNF it if I still didn't enjoy it then.

And after that the book improved a lot, the story is the strongest part of the book in my opinion and as soon as the story picked up steam I really started to enjoy this book. The story is very engaging and I found myself wanting to keep reading to see what would happen next. Madison changed her whole life and moved to New Orleans for a new start, but her arrival there sets things in motion. There is a bit of mystery surrounding the house, magick, vampires, what happened in the past and more. It nicely set up the series and when I reached the end I was happy to already have bought book 2 as I definitely plan to continue the series. My rating is more of a 3.5 stars as I did really enjoy the story, but just felt like I didn't quite enjoy the book as a whole enough to give it a 4 star.

The story definitely was this book it's strongest aspect in my opinion, the other parts were nice too, but just not as good as the story. For me it was the story that drove this book and that kept my attention. The characters all seemed interesting enough and I liked how there was a bit of doubt about some characters their intentions and some grey area's. Things weren't as black and white, which was nice.

I just never fully cared about the characters and would've liked a bit more depth, a bit more insight into their personalities. I also would've liked to get a bit of a feel for Madison her past, I felt like the story was very focused in the here and now for her and while it was nice to just start the story right when things start happening, I felt like a little bit of build up of information about her past would've been a nice. We do get some hints about historical events regarding to the vampires and witches, but I never felt like we got a good feel for Madison and what her life had been up to that point. I guess it's not really relevant, but I think that's why the start felt a bit jarring, as I didn't know what she was moving away from and we don't really hear much from that.

The story driven approach did seem to carry with it a nice slightly dark and mysterious atmosphere that fit the book. And the cover seems to fit that well. While I didn't got as much of a visual image of the city as I would've liked the focus is pretty much on Madison her house and a big part of the book takes place there. I was able to form a good image of the house, which was nice. I could vividly visualize that house and how everything inside it looked and where the rooms were in relation to each other. Although I am not sure if that was because of the actual descriptions, as I seemed to call up that image as soon as I heard of the house and just filled in the details when the story progressed.

The world building was interesting. I liked how I got a feel for the history of this city and the two races. We get a bit of a feel of what witches and vampires are capable of. But I wanted more. The vampires are pretty much like the typical vampire, so it was easier to get a feel for what they could do. But the magic and witches all seemed to stay a bit unclear. It wasn't always relevant for the plot, but I just wanted to understand better how it all worked. It is hinted that there are different types of magick, but we never get to hear which ones. And some magick just seems to happen by willing it so, then they have their third eye vision and some magick is more spell like. I just wanted to understand a bit how it all worked as now it felt a bit incoherent at times.

To summarize: When I started this book I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it as the start didn't quite hook me. It felt a bit off, like some small pieces were missing and the world didn't come alive. Luckily after the first few chapters things improved and I got into the story. I really enjoyed the story and it was very engaging. It grabbed my attention and kept it and I was curious to see where things would go. But on the other hand I also felt that the characters could've used a bit more depth at times, I wanted to get more a feel for their characters and that was difficult at times. The world building also didn't fully make sense, and while that wasn't the focus of the book, I just wanted to better understand how it all worked. But despite all the issues, I mostly did enjoy this book and got swept up in the story and wanted to keep reading. And I am curious how things will continue in the next book. If you're looking for a great story focused read about vampires and witches with a bit of history, mystery and magick mixed in, I would recommend this book

Fresh new bite on the paranormal genre
POS: This story is the first in what could develop into a great series. Strong plot lines and characters that will carry well.
I Love Maddie, our leading lady, great personality and she does eventually get around to pulling up her big girl panties.
Nicole is her plucky neighborhood witch whom I see possibly pulling a strong supporting lead in book 2. (She had better)
Jean-Luc is definitely a swoon-worthy leading man and our resident Vamp.
Remy is the leader of the New Orleans coven, and Ohh is he smooth.
NEG: We are not given a lot on Maddie's background. We get some filler but I would like more meat,
I really liked Remy - okay he is a little of a bad boy but, I think there is a lot more to his story, and I would have liked to hear some of it in the first book.
Jean-Luc, he talks about moving his family, who are they? ... again MORE information, please!

I understand this is a series and you have to leave some mystery but I would have liked just a few more details.
Definitely, recommend for any lover of the paranormal genre - I am moving on to book two.

I DNF'd this about a week ago and didn't even realize it. I just forgot to come back to it. I honestly couldn't have cared less about finding out what happened to the main character. There were some promising plot points, including a possible stalkerish boyfriend and a main character who knows she's a witch from the beginning of the book and doesn't have a bunch of but-I'm-not-trained! moments to explain why things aren't getting done. The problem was, the book was focusing on the other, less interesting plot points that seemed to be heading to a place I didn't like.

I just didn't care for the world-building here, and in the end, I honestly just forgot to pick the book back up again. It's only been a few days and I've forgotten most of the details so I don't feel like I'll be missing much here.

Good Start to a new series. Characters are interesting and likeable and have lots of room for development. New Orleans is always a great setting for a paranormal book. Looking forward to book 2.

A standing ovation

The house spoke to her on the way to see another listing and she bought it. Why? Was there something pulling her towards the house when other people couldn't seem to even see it there on the street? The house seemed so familiar, even her dreams featured it. Was this just location or was there deeper meaning here? No time to ponder these questions

When I saw the cover of this new Urban Fantasy Series starter, I knew I had to read it. I'm glad I did. It was a good story, reminding me a lot of another book I really liked, also set in New Orleans, with a super-hot French guy who is (but isn't supposed to be) the guy you want the heroine to end up with, somehow, which was Ghouls Rush In by H.P. Mallory, and it's even better sequel, Once Haunted, Twice Shy.

I found Magick Reborn to be a quick, easy, and entertaining read. There were a couple of things I thought were a tad bit lacking, like the development of Nicole's character and the role she played. I kept having this feeling like, why are you trusting this girl? I don't trust her! Which ended up being a wrong assumption on my part, which I was able to figure out toward the end of the book.

But other than that, I really loved several other aspects of this book. I loved the secrets about the house, the history that drew Madison to it in the first place. I super-loved Jean Luc and pretty much everything about his character, noble and bad-ass at the same time. I hope there's A LOT more of him in the next book!! I loved what the author did with Remy's character, and how things played out for him at the end of this book. I also thought the way Madison could feel the flares of magick while she was on a date with Remy was kind of bone-chilling once I figured out what caused it. Talk about foreshadowing! Wow.

And of course, knowing Book 2 will come out in just a few weeks probably helped me feel less "cliff-hangery," surely I'm not the first to invent that word, but while there are several things still left open to be resolved, pretty big things, I didn't feel too cheated by the ending of this book. I felt like it set it up nicely to move into Book #2, which I will definitely be reading.

I think this book is well-worth 4 stars, and if it hadn't been for the two things I mentioned above, between Nicole's character and my spoiler question, I'd have probably given it five stars.

Magick Reborn, indeed! An engrossing story for paranormal and romance readers everywhere.

Such a change of pace from The Half-Lich Series, but truly a breath of fresh air! The characters are deep, have rich backgrounds, and leave you wanting to know so much more.

With her responsibility to protect the Vampire Jean Luc, who built the home for his Eliza, the strong witch that he loved 200 years ago, where does that leave Maddie? Is she just to remain in the now-empty home and live her life as a member of Nicole's coven and finish writing her book? Does Luminier still remain protected against anyone with ill intent from entering its grounds? So many questions!!

But of the few things we do know is that Jean Luc has warned the New Orleans witches that vampires are coming. They will remember the purge 200 years ago, and they won't be looking to "Make Love, Not War". They will be out for blood; ready to take back the magical city of New Orleans.

Remy Jackson's dark magic secrets have been revealed and he has been expelled as leader of the witches of New Orleans for breaking their own rule... no practice of dark magic. He's changed his name throughout the centuries, but he has used dark arts to lengthen his life to keep control of the witches and keep the vampires at bay. I guess he sees himself as the sole "Savior" of New Orleans, with no respect to the witches in his coven. Now they will still need him to fight the onslaught on vampires sure to smell the spilled blood of witches in New Orleans, but will he really be amiable about helping after his expulsion? Will he hold a grudge against Maddie & Nicole and try to prove to them that he is the rightful coven leader because of his experience with the purge of vampires? His ego may be even bigger than his life.

I'm so glad the next book releases in February because I cannot wait to see what comes next! Now that Maddie knows that Eliza's magic is her own by rights, she will have a lot of studying to do to see just how powerful she can become. And I believe her search for Jean Luc and his sisters is not over. Maybe she won't wait for him to come to her as he said, but will roam the nights, dangerous ones now, in search of him... and still wanting him with the very core of her being.

What a wonderful work of art you have given your readers, Katerina & Lee! We're ready for the next one! You surely delivered & did level-up with this book. I thing I see a NYT Best Seller in your future!

"Magick Reborn" is the wonderful new novel by one of my favorite authors, Katerina Martinez. I wanted to savor every page of this wonderful new book set in the mysterious and always-appealing city of New Orleans. When Madison arrives in the city to take up residence in her new house, the beautifully named Chateau de Lumiere, she doesn't have a clue regarding the events that are about to transpire or what is involved in ownership of the house.

Ms. Martinez stays true to the glorious supernatural beauty that is New Orleans and mixes a wicked brew of witches, magic, vampires and voodoo into a compelling and compulsively-readable book that, thankfully, is the start of a new series. With the rain dripping on the eaves and a savory cup of tea in hand, you'll want to dive into this book immediately.

Hello Bookworms,

So I read this book quite a while ago and I remember most of it so it must be an interesting book for me to remember!
So story 🙌✔
Plot 🙌✔
Characters 🙌✔

So the book was good, it had some interesting points through the book and the story was captivating,
but ya guys it's 3 books and I didn't get inspired picking up the second book! I felt the story kinda ended in the first book. Like the resolution was done and the next one is another chapter which I didn;t feel like reading.
So there you go read the first one and then decide if you wanna continue.

There’s a ‘real feel’ to the protagonist in this Urban Fantasy set in New Orleans. She is a descendant from a birth family, which the reader is yet to learn more about and this entitles Madison to a unique heritage. It also forces on her responsibilities she had hoped to live without as the character wishes for a quiet life to focus on her writing career.

The forbidden love aspect in this story is what kept my attention the most, where she is encountered with choices of righteousness vs the acceptance of her own kind, due to the desire for one man.

There are further mysteries to learn about in this series and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

I've had all three books from this series, in my kindle for a few weeks, and when I finally got round to reading it, I didn't put it down till I finished it, I mean I literal feel asleep with it in my hands, and no it wasn't boredom that made me fall asleep, it was exhaustion, this series is definitely Katerina's best works so far, set in New Orlean.
(where else would you find magical vampires and witch's living together? )
The stories was original and exciting, and not too fast pace, with everything you want in a paranormal romance, definitely an excellent read and I would thoroughly recommend it.

I love that the book's setting is in New Orleans and the fact that it’s kinda set both in past New Orleans and the New Orleans of today. The author is able to capture the magic of the city onto the pages and it is clear that she did her homework when she started this novel. Not only is she able to capture the essence of the city and its beauty but also create magic of her own with a great plot and character development.

After really liking other books from this author I picked up Magick reborn with some hopes of it being above average.
But I was deeply disappointed as it was like reading different stories mashed together - I wasn't sure what was going on... Way to much anyway!
Pick a Laine.... (Not Elaine) 🤣🙈

And stay on track.

The story had nice ideas and every now and then I thought ohhh that is interesting, now we are getting somewhere... But no, it went nowhere.
I have read about 85% of the book and wiææ not finish and it goes without saying that I won't continue with the series.

It’s interesting enough that I will go onto the next book, but it is a little slow and I’m full of questions 😂
As someone who grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I need to know how these vampires could just sleep for hundreds of years..
Was there a spell? Or do they just lay down and choose not to wake back up? And the lack of feeding for that long… sorry just many questions going on in my head.

Okay so the book is basically witches vs. Vampires or it will be by book 2.

We got some background information and flash backs, there’s new friendship, romance, action.

A new twist on an old tale

Vampires and witches are nothing new but this is a world where the two are at war and there is a lot of ancient history involved. I love Madison, she is a great character. New Orleans is a favorite place of mine and I love that this world is located there.

In the beginning I was unsure but by the end I needed to know more. Little did Maddison know moving to New Orleans for a fresh start and to finish writing her book, would land her in the middle of an ancient war. A war between witches and vampires, that weave into a history that she didn’t know. A great urban new adult read for any fantasy fan!

Interesting story

Enjoyed the characters and the storyline itself. The ending left questions that the next book in this series will answer. I felt the ending and one characters development a bit rushed. Still an interesting witch and vampire story

This book has explanations of how magick is ranked, according to uses of the witch. It also tells of a war between witches and vampires. I am going to start reading book 2...let you know how that goes.
