A poignant book to read at this moment as someone who is anti-Zionist and Jewish. I highly recommend this book as Fortini’s words are timeless. Fortini’s thoughts regarding his feelings of resentment toward Italian society’s preferential treatment of Israel during following the events of the 1967 war feels so familiar as an American at this current moment during the genocide of Gaza.

"Nothing must change. It's the summer of bullfrogs and dogs in the fields, of the insects' little nocturnal contrivances; they have only this summer to live, and they're everywhere at work."

This juxtaposition against the pattern of forgetting—this indistinguishability between different events in time or different opinions—appears as a sort of call to action. Perhaps our persistence or view of ourselves as eternal has kept us from acting, and conditioned us to passively consume these concrete yet completely alterable matters (ex. immigrant detention centers and child separation at the United States border).

Why do we merely consume and why can we not be moved to mass action?

"The response of manipulated opinion has made me understand to what degree we are reduced to using world events with the same puerile carelessness that we employ with 'products'—to consume them."

In this pattern even differences of opinion appear to be almost indistinguishable as no simple position holding is of much consequence, but only serves to remain on the side of passive consumption and inaction.

Una lettura complessa di cui mi mancano, purtroppo, dettagli del contesto storico in cui è stato scritto, ma che mescola l’analisi della macchina da guerra sionista e della propaganda occidentale che la nutre a una riflessione sulle proprie origini ebraiche.
Demoralizzante vedere come nulla sia cambiato.

The bulk - dogs of the sinai - is complicated and complicating personal essay about judaism and responding to israeli injustice, and the difficulty from which people take to make their faith a part of the critique. The language is not simple and fortini weaves from historical context to academic/intellectual discussion of identity and personal stories. Still will benefit from a re-read and a rewatch of the accompanying straub huillet film (plus the letters to straub from the book)

The manifesto Letter to the Italian Jews is stunning. A sharp, precise, and straightforward call for jews of the diaspora to fight against the injustices of the israeli state.

Also included is alberto toscano’s essay “the non-state intellectual” about fortini. the critical language was a but challenging, i havent read theory like this in a bit, but its ultimate point of fortini looking for a way in which the intellectual can function as a communist, not just writing communist theory is very interesting.

‘The temptation to believe that form is the only reality and the word the only form, the invitation to the calm of detachment - they have never been so strong. But even stronger is resistance and I won’t resign myself.’

As I finished reading Fortini’s book, a news bulletin flashed up on my screen declaring that Israel has launched yet more missiles which have already claimed at least 400 Palestinian lives in mere hours. And yet the mainstream media still refuse to call these events what they have always been. Genocide. We in the Western world cannot remain silent. We must speak up, and rise up. Fortini’s work here was originally published in 1967, and it still remains sadly essential today, nearly 60 years later.
