Trackers #2

The Hunted

Rate this book
The deadly hunt continues in book two of the bestselling Trackers saga...

Five days ago North Korea detonated three nuclear warheads over the United States, triggering an electromagnetic pulse that crippled the country. A second attack destroyed the nerve center of America in a nuclear blast that flattened the nation's capitol. As the government falls apart in the aftermath, the survivors must decide how far they will go to save the ones they love.

Police Chief Marcus Colton has struggled to maintain order in the isolated mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado, with the help of expert tracker Raven Spears and stranded pilot Major Nathan Sardetti. Together, they fought the evil terrorizing the town-but new threats are rising and old rivalries are coming to a head.

Charlize Montgomery, newly promoted to Secretary of Defense, is caught between loyalty to her country and love for her son, Ty. When the Marines sent to find Ty in Colorado discover a scene of unspeakable carnage, the straightforward rescue mission turns into a deadly chase as the hunters become the hunted.

"AMERICA WASN'T AT WAR - - THEY'D ALREADY LOST IT."

☆☆☆☆☆

"AMERICA WASN'T AT WAR - - THEY'D ALREADY LOST IT. THE BATTLE THEY FACED WASN'T FOR VICTORY BUT SURVIVAL."

Trackers 2: The Hunted (A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith is a well written story of what might happen in the event of a EMP and Nuclear attack on the United States by North Korea. The characters are well developed, the storyline is action-packed, and full of suspense.

The story revolves around the little town and community of Estes Park, Colorado and the Secretary of Defense and their families, friends, neighbors, and surviving government members trying to survive the day, protect their town, and help bring relief to a country that is suddenly brought to their knees. They are not down for the fight and have nothing but determination to pull themselves up and rebuild.

This story is that of loss, struggles, and hope, and even at times when all might seem at a lost, the characters build friendship and loyalty to each other and their community.

I really have enjoyed the first two books in this series and have already started the third book. I hope you, too, enjoy reading this book and series.

Quotes:

"It's time I start realizing that evil doesn't give you a second chance."

"There wasn't anything less honorable in life than a man who refused to pay his debts."

"Some people are survivors, and some just get lucky, whether they deserve it or not."

As much as I love Nicholas Sansbury Smith's Extinction Cycle books, his new Trackers series feels like a breath of fresh air with its lack of sci-fi horror creatures (and, mind you, I do love me some sci-fi horror creatures an awful lot). The drama and action in these books are spurred 100 percent by human actors and motivators, keeping the plot completely grounded in reality. With his other series, there's a certain element of the fantastic that helps provide a friendly buffer for escapist thrills, but Trackers carries with it a measure of authenticity that's all the more chilling.

Five days ago, North Korea launched an attack against the United States (in the book, I mean. But depending on when you're reading this, it could be true), collapsing much of American society with a massive electromagnetic pulse blast and nuking Washington, D.C. While the Korean threat continues to lurk in the background of The Hunted, the main narrative thrust concerns the dangers of homegrown American threats, specifically an Aryan splinter-ground calling themselves the Sons of Liberty. As with Trackers, Estes Park is Ground Zero for all the bad news, and Sioux tracker Raven Spears and Major Nathan Sardetti are again on the front lines and trying to hold together what's left of their society.

Smith's storytelling skills are front and center with this book, and he's crafted one heck of a page-turner. I had to force myself to slowdown at times, but the pacing of this book is so rapid-fire all you can do is try to keep up. It's like this sucker runs on rocket fuel, and boy does it ever burn hot.

I liked the first Trackers book a lot, but this one is even better. I attribute a lot of this to Nazi punching. There's a lot of skinheads in this book, and it's a real treat to read them getting their just deserts. I was whopping with joy as they got the snot kicked out of them, or met the business end of a rifle or axe blade. It's just such good stuff, and a perfect remedy for our current American climate where some people are actually questioning whether or not it's OK to punch Nazis. Pro-tip: It is ALWAYS OK to punch Nazis. In fact, there are few things more patriotic than Nazi sleaze getting the crap kicked out them by Real American Heroes, and Smith writes those scenes with his usual action flair. It's great!

This book gets all 5 Nazi-punching stars. And if you liked the first Trackers book, you're going to be in for a real treat with this seriously gripping second installment.

[Note: I received an advanced copy of this title from the author.]

This story pulls no punches!

Dark. Intense. Savage. This second book of the Trackers trilogy begins only five days after the initial EMP attack and the small town of Estes Park is already devolving. Despite Chief Colton’s resolve to do the “right thing”, the atrocities just keep coming. Potent suspense and superb writing combine to make this story some of the author’s best work.

Review of TRACKERS 2: THE HUNTED
by Nicholas Sansbury Smith
(TRACKERS Book 2)

TRACKERS 2: THE HUNTED continues the story of the North Korean-caused EMPs and the destruction of Washington D. C., with exciting (and horrifying) every-page action. Author Nicholas Sansbury Smith applies his research and his experience in disaster preparedness to vivify what could be if the current (or future) geopolitical climate debilitated and the protocols preventing nuclear attacks collapsed.

Again set in Estes Park, Colorado, and offshore in the newly reconstructed US government, survivors are trying to piece together a present and future, laying up supplies and protecting their families, while criminals and psychopaths utilize the chaos for their own further endeavours. Synchronicity provided that I read these two books right after reading an upcoming thriller dealing with white supremacy, because a supremacist psychopath is a major portion of this installment.

Reading TRACKERS and TRACKERS 2: THE HUNTED left me invigorated, dismayed, and thinking analytically about the present and the potential near-future possibilites. I'm also left hungry for the next in the series, TRACKERS 3: THE STORM.

I really loved the first in this series and was totally excited to jump into the second as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this one just ended up irritating me. Every character seemed to focus on the good of the few outweighing the good of the many to the point of ridiculousness. Yes, I completely understand how the average person is going to behave in situations like this, we all want to protect the ones we love and will do that above protecting and helping the general public, but this book's protagonists aren't average people, they are people who have been trained to focus on the good of the many and keep their personal agendas secondary to that goal--except in this universe, they don't.

We have a retired fighter pilot turned Senator turned Secretary of Defense who does absolutely nothing in her job as SecDef but send out increasing numbers of men and machines to do one thing -- save her son. Men are killed, heroes who could have been instrumental in turning the tide and keeping the peace on a grand scale are sacrificed to try and save one kid. Munitions are wasted, equipment damaged and lost, all to save one child. Sure, one life is important, but what about those thousands of other people who lose their lives because the Secretary of Defense can't focus on the job at hand? Disgusting. to add insult to injury, it's a tedious and boring plot line.

Add to this a group of "bad guys" who are so idiotic that everything they do is either a complete typecast or astonishingly stupid. White Supremacists who break into a camp for handicapped children and then...kidnap the kids. Oooookay, now they have a bunch of mouths to feed, a very difficult group to transport and keep alive, and absolutely no way to find or contact the parents for ransom. What possible use would these kids be to this group in this situation? None. Of course they get insanely lucky that one of them just happens to be the kid of the Senator/SecDef who will of course, lift heaven and earth to save. What serendipity!

Gah. Enough. I made it 3/4ths of the way through this one and put it away for good. It's frustrating because I really enjoyed Trackers 1 and was looking forward to more of the same as the series progressed.

Nicholas has hit another home run with Trackers 2. Action, adventure and betrayal awaits the readers of this new novel. This book keeps you on your toes from page one until the end. Nicholas Sansbury Smith has done extensive research as usual and explains things where anyone can understand. If and when the SHTF I want to be on Team Sansbury because that is the surviving team!! Highly recommend this and all of Nicholas Sansbury Smith's books.

My original The Hunted audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Fresh from having saved the town and their families from serial killers in the small town of Estes Park, Raven and Nathan find themselves on the move to find Nathan’s handicapped nephew, Ty.  Still plagued by radiation, thugs on the road and other dangers, both head off to Ty’s last known location.  While the US is recovering from the devastating EMP attack, others are ready to take advantage of the chaos.

Ty’s mother, the new Secretary of Defense is trying to find the last North Korean sub and also to save the rest of the US and her son from the newest homegrown terrorist – General Phoenix.   Together, Raven and Nathan hunt down General Phoenix and set into motion a deadly and a fight to the death.

Action packed, this second in the Trackers series is mesmerizing.  Nicholas Sansbury Smith has a gift for blending fact with fiction and creating a horrifying story.  A story that will keep one up for nights because the monsters he creates are people we very well may know in real life!  People who make headlines daily but who fail because there is no chaos – yet!

I have had the pleasure of enjoying several of Smiths books, this series, however, is far more frightening than any of his others.  He knows how to take terror and grow it, cultivating it until his readers cannot stop listening to his books – they know his horror can happen!

Well written with a shocking twist that will leave you gasping – I had to wait a couple of days to write this review because I was in shock and mostly angry at Smith!  I won’t say anymore but like life, a writer can be so unfair!

Once again Bronson Pinchot owns this book!  His talent of presenting each character with a voice that one can only love or hate; he nails each one perfectly!  I hate the voices of the President and General Phoenix – they are grating and “holier than thou” type voices thus gearing the audience to hate the men and appropriately so. While Raven, Nathan and Chief Colton are solid husky voices that demonstrates strength and stability – you cannot help but feel a strong connection to them and grow to love them.

Don't miss out on this awesome series.

There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.

"America wasn't at war - they'd already lost it. The battle they faced wasn't for victory but for survival."

It's no secret if you read my reviews at all that Nicholas Smith is one of my favorite authors. I've enjoyed each and every series of books that he has written (and I'm not normally a huge fan of series books). The ORBS series, the EXTINCTION CYCLE series, the HELLDIVERS series (even though it's only one book so far), and this one - the TRACKERS series. Each one is new, exciting, full of action and adventure - and Smith writes quickly and doesn't keep his readers waiting for a year or more between books in the different series.

TRACKERS 2 is special to me. It takes place in Colorado, mostly in Estes Park, and I grew up around that area. So when there's bombs that go off countrywide and cause EMPs, knocking out the power grid, electronics and basically life as we now know it and then nuclear bombs detonated in strategic areas on top of that (read TRACKERS 1 if you already haven't), I was able to totally visualize the aftermath because the story centers around areas I am very familiar with.

This story continues the story of survival started in TRACKERS 1 but the pace and action is ramped up even more. We find that not only are Americans facing devastation from North Korea but they're having to fight other Americans for survival too.

This series is way too believable especially as we consider recent actions by North Korea. Smith's other books are science fiction but TRACKERS could be true and are any of us truly prepared for that?

Action, adventure, solid writing, characters that come alive on the pages of the book, beautiful AND devastated locales - all the pieces come together to make this a super reading experience.

I received an Advanced Reading Copy from the author of this book in exchange for my unbiased review but I also always buy copies of his books because he's definitely a writer I want to support.

The latest I've heard is that this book will be available for download on Amazon on May 4, 2017. It's available for pre-order right now.

I actually liked the first book, but this one is annoying the heck out of me. The characters are interesting, but the steady goofs, mistakes, and oversights keep breaking my immersion, and I've lost interest in reading it.

For example:

(Some might say these are spoilers, but they're minor spoilers at most, and all early in the book.)

Radiation can't be stopped by ordinary plastic garbage bags, and can't be "precipitated" out by rain. Radiation is the energy emitted by a radioactive substance or a nuclear reaction. Like other electromagnetic radiation, it travels at the speed of light, and goes right through most ordinary substances because of its high energy. From the descriptions, I think Smith actually means radioactive fallout, but he keeps calling it just radiation, and it's distracting.

You can't hear a crack and a boom of thunder from the same stroke of lightning. Smith describes it as "he heard the crack, then the boom of thunder", implying they're both from the same strike. But it doesn't work that way. If it's close, it cracks, if it's distant it booms and rumbles, and you can only hear one from a given stroke of lightning.

Feeding bone-in chicken wings to a dog (as the main character does because he doesn't feel like eating the dinner he's holding) would almost certainly kill the dog. The bones would break and splinter as the dog eats them, and almost certainly puncture its stomach and intestine. The dog would then die of peritonitis in the setting of the story, but only after days of agony and suffereing. I didn't read far enough to see if this happens, but whether it's the character's ignorance or the author's, it's unacceptable.

A firefighter's protective jacket is a turnOUT coat, not a "turncoat". A turncoat is a traitor.

While most of these seem trivial when taken individually, they are constant irritations that keep interrupting my reading, and make the story not worth my time. Moving on, don't plan to read any more of the series.

A great second installment to the series. This book picks up right where the first left off and has all the familiar characters from the first book.

Raven continues to help Chief Colton try to keep the peace in Estes Park after the EMP attack by North Korea. Charlize Montgomery is now the Secretary of Defense, but that doesn't stop her from trying to find & save her son, Ty. Her brother, Nathan, enlists Raven's help to rescue Ty from the Sons of Liberty, a skinhead anarchist group, led by the villainous Fenix.

I am happy that Mr. Smith continues to include a Native American legend into this series. This inclusion adds a lot to the books IMHO.

Plenty of action, some tears as good people are killed, and loads of entertainment. Mr. Smith has just enough weapon/ammo information to be realistic, but he doesn't go on & on about it like so many books in the genre. His writing style is very good, his characters believable & well-developed. The mood invoked by his style is just right: You will sit on the edge of your seat throughout and won't be able to put the book down until the end.

Can't wait to continue this series. Well done, Mr. Smith!

Auch im zweiten Band geht es spannend und gut geschrieben weiter.

Wie jedoch auch bei der Extinctionreihe des Autors, sollte man die Charaktere nicht zu lieb gewinnen, da sie ganz unverhofft sterben könnten...

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy. Wow, as the author seems to do without fail is to get you to create an attachment to his characters and he has this gift to really grab your attention right at the start. Book 2 delved into this realistic setting with the town of Estes literally fighting for their lives. Raven is back and really comes into his own. My favorite was Nathan and following him throughout searching for his missing nephew. Nicholas really out did himself with the second installment and I was thoroughly entertained not to mention the non-stop action!!

Kein Strom, kein Wasser, keine Versorgung, keine Kontakte = Panik.

An excellent read. I loved the interweaving of Sioux folk tales with the post-apocalyptic theme. Nick's respect for different cultures is notable, and it comes through clearly in this novel. Evenly paced, with well-choreographed action scenes and good suspense, this is another must-read for Nick's fans. And for anyone who likes post-apoc fiction, IMO.

A solid sequel! Loved the tension and action as things in America continue to break down due to the attacks on the country.

Personally, I liked the battles with the white supremacy group and that being tied in to the story. I know some people had issues with that, but obviously not everyone will like every book.

I think these books are a great concept, and realistically, it's likely that a group of bad guys like that may form if our country broke down in such a way. Excited to see what happens in the 3rd book!

Trackers 2: The Hunted is the continuation of Nicholas Sansbury Smith’s story of the impact of a North Korean EMP attack on the continental USA and in particular the Town of Estes Park, Colorado where we meet up again with Chief of Police Marcus Colton, Raven Spears and Nathan Sardetti and others. A number of new characters have been added to the storyline, some of whom cause great pain and suffering to the characters we have come to know and care about in Trackers 1. Again, this latest book reflects Smith’s amazing growth as an award-winning author of note. This book is jam-packed action, a suspenseful thriller, and a compelling wake-up call as to the devastation and societal breakdown that is caused by an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) and one to be heeded given our present political climate.

I highly recommend you pre-order this book, and if you haven’t read Trackers 1 yet, get it as soon as possible and follow up with Book 2.

I was given an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review. I have also pre-ordered this book.

Action packed

I realized why I enjoyed this book. Other than fantastic writing, and phenomenal imagery, it reminds me of the police procedural tv shows I love to watch. You don't know where, or when, something is going to happen. You don't know who's in on it.

NSS is a superb storyteller. A small word of caution though, don't get attacked to anyone. He'll break your heart. Every time.

Just in case you thought all the good action had to have taken place in the first one, stand back because #2 is even more action packed as things start to come apart in the U.S. This starts one day after book one ends and 5 days after the North Korean attack. Once again, lots of action and suspense. Loved it and am onto #3!

The follow up to Trackers Book 1 is excellent! As North America is reeling from the apocalypse resulting from the North Korean EMP bombs, Colton and Raven in Estes Park, Colorado struggle with securing and providing for the town. Charlize, the Secretary of Defense, is trying to find her son and to protect and salvage what remains of North America. This is not your typical apocalypse story and it happens to be very timely. It's storytelling is engrossing and has me anxiously waiting for the 3rd book!

Excellent sequel to the first Trackers! Kept me reading all night and holding my breath more than once.

Fantastic

Superb sequel to what was an excellent first book. I love Nicks work there's a realistic feel with these books. Due to the current climate it's hard not to believe what he's written. If your after a tense read and danger throughout a book then this is a book series that's a meat read. I wait in anticipation for the third installment! I couldn't resist reading on in this series. I'm actually reading the 4 book set but it's easier to keep track of the separate books this way.

The Hunted picks up where Trackers left off with the same characters and the same issues. It is not a great situation and the bad guys have too much power. I now want to become a prepper.

Wow. If you thought the first trackers was good, well you haven't read anything yet. The U.S. Is still dealing with the attack from North Korea., Raven and the gang have returned to Rates Park to recover from wound garnered from hunting down the serial killer. Little did Raven and Nathan know that their stay would be short and that the mission to save Nathan's nephew would be deadly . Book three is going to be a hell of a ride if the first two are conductive to how this story will play out. I want to say that with the current world standing and the way Nicholas has written these books , it should either scare the he'll out of you or make you seriously think about things. What he has written can occur and people turning on one another can and would happen, matter of survival and the ones who are waiting for the inner demon to come out and reek havoc.

of a ride

Another well-written book by this author. The non-stop action starts on page one, and continues throughout the entire story. I found it hard to put this book down once I started reading. An intriguing and unique story line. Scientific information that is factual, will definitely cause the reader to consider the possibility of some of the situations actually happening.
I think readers of action, adventure, should also give this book a chance, you won't be disappointed.

Having loved the first book, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

All across the country, people are struggling to survive and find some sense of normalcy. An EMP attack that sent life as they new it into a tailspin was just the beginning of their problems. Now facing threats from others wanting what little bit they have, the isolated mountain community also faces fights within. Who survives? Who dies? it’s anyone’s guess.

Once again I’m immediately sucked into the story. As the author takes me from group to group, back and forth across the country, the suspense builds, the danger threatens, and I almost lean forward towards the book, excited and worried about the characters.

Another thrilling, can’t put down installment in this series. And I’m already deep into the next one.

This was entertaining enough that I read the whole thing but there were things about the story & the writing that bugged me. As with book one, the character names seemed silly & cartoonish. Not a big deal I guess, but it did continually knock me out of the story. My apologies to anyone reading this review named Charlize. Also, I wasn't really attached to any of the characters and sometimes confused who was who as they didn't really have distinctive personalities. I might still check out the next book in the series when it comes out, but I'm not counting the days.

Let me preface this review by stating that I am a huge fan of Nick and his work. He is a gifted writer who has a very distinct knack for storytelling. This is a great series that deviates away from his other apocalyptic series and continues the tale of an EMP disaster that feels like it is becoming more likely every day.

This story continues the tale of Raven Spears, Chief Colton, Mayor Andrews, Secretary Montgomery, and the citizens of Estes Park. In what is becoming a situation more people
Should try to understand the ramifications of, the town folk and citizens of the ravaged US continue in their attempts to recover from the EMP attack which shocked the country. As is expected in a disaster of this type, the crazies have come out and are causing problems for city, state, and country leadership; a group of folks who are trying to do nothing more than restore order and help those in need.

This story started out a bit slower for me although it did pick up around the early-middle of the book. The tale is well told but the meat of the story really kicked off later on. I think part of my feelings can be tied to the narration of the story. Bronson Pinchot is a great narrator but I have noticed that he can be a bit slower at times when it comes to his reading style (I experienced this in other stories as well, not just this one – I found that I could easily put this at 1.25x speed and the pace felt better).

In fact, the only other complaint I have comes to the way base names are read in the story, and this is very minor and more of a peculiarity on my part. One example I can give is the reading of “Buckley AFB”. In normal conversation, I rarely hear folks use the abbreviation “AFB” at the end of a base name. Army bases are generally “Fort XXX” and Air Force bases are generally just the base name itself “Minot”, “Cannon”, “Langley”.

Overall, however, this is still a great book and a welcome addition to the series. The interactions between the characters is well written and I can definitely feel my emotions going when the incident with Don occurs towards the middle of the book. Why couldn’t a Variant show up and fix that issue for us?

Once again, human nature is well portrayed in this story and you see the range of emotions which would take place in such a real-life event. You see the group that wants to help others, the group that wants to protect the community of regulars, the group that wants to use the event as a way to start over in a new form of leadership, and those who simply seek chaos (the SOL group).

Despite my comments above, I gladly rate this story a 5/5 overall but a 4 out of 5 stars for performance. Again, my comments should not detract from the nature of this story. The story paints a picture of a very real-life event we could soon find ourselves faced with and does it in a well-constructed manner. Give this series a read (which I am assuming you have if you are already looking at book two). You won’t regret it. Nick really does have a talent for storytelling.
