Truth is always the first victim in war. But can it be revived?
The gold is not making it to the governments of the USA and the CSA. Why? Ambitious politicians point fingers with one hand while stealing from the till with the other. There is violence in the streets and folks are unsure and upset. Can a few good men sort this out? And can anyone tell the good guys from the bad guys?
Pinkerton agent Rob Finn and his sidekick Lonnie Walters return to Bannack to get the gold supply again flowing to the Union. Sheriff Henry Plummer is on hand to assist, as is Treasury agent Emry. Gold from an unexpected source enters the picture, changing Finn's plans. Yet few things are as they seem. Few people are who they pretend to be.
The good ones will always rise, or will they? Picking his way through the possibilities will take time. Time waits for no man, and Rob is no exception. When will he find out the real culprit(s), and will he be in time to keep the gold from falling into the wrong hands?
If you enjoy history or learning about time this is a great way to do that the author does a fantastic job of delving into history and making the story very realistic . I look forward to reading the rest of the series
With the old style weapons you had to be excellent at figuring to begin to make a 'Longshot'. I really liked the way this was explained at the end of this series. Excellent work and readable by many ages give an insight to history not like school but realistic.
This is the third of the Longshot series and by far the weakest. The first was well written with a lot of tension and action. Rob Finn was working then as an assassin for the Union. The second and third books have Rob dealing with good mines out West as a Pinkerton agent. While the second book rambled, it was recently written. This third book, not so much. Rob used "I" sometimes in his dialogue and at other times "Ah". I don't recall his ever using Ah for I in the first two books. He's Irish, not Southern. There is a lot of repetition in this book. If the author tells you something once, he tells you 5 times. And Rob continues his loose lipped and trusting ways from the second book. Good gosh, if you know someone is a criminal, do something right away! I skimmed much of this book. The series started off well but after the disappointment of this third book, I don't think I will continue. I would rather read Lonesome Dove again.
A morality tale rich in period details. This is a story about greed and how a person may not be the person you think he or she is. The story moves along easily, but I think the author gives too much away at different points instead of letting tension build; thus, the story has a flatness to it. At times I thought I was reading a disparate collection of tales, but by the end I thought the author did a good job in weaving the characters and their stories together in a satisfying way. The story immerses the reader in the period.
The third of three western novels about the Pinkerton Agency and the move west. The main characters travel to the gold fields, discovering gold, and helping others ship their gold. LinkedIn develops a system which proved to be very good for awhile. His agents, one in particular discovers gold for himself and build a wagon with a false bottom to carry the gold east. His family has begun to invest the gold and have become very wealthy. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Good story but too many punctuation and spelling mistakes
Although Baker has created a fully developed protagonist and a good story with interesting twists, his or his publisher’s lack of editing is unacceptable and distracting. Particularly troubling are the author’s use of commas and his misspelled words or typos. I have read all three of the Longshot books, and the editing gets worse with each book.
Just finished number three in the Longshot series and it was well worth my time. It’s good to have an author who cares about the history during that time he was writing about. The historical background plus the imagination of the writer gave me a series well worth reading. Hopefully there will be more to follow. My thanks to author Keith R. Baker for giving me some well spent time during our Civil War times. Well done!
History buffs may enjoy this novel more than I. I concede that it's difficult to make long gone personages and events seem real. There ARE some instances where this is achieved. On the whole, the jumping back and forth between characters and events is a bit boring and convoluted.
This is the second book I've read by Mr Baker and each book has the code of the West in them. Usually good wins over evil but as in life sometimes that's not how it goes. The characters are real and the landscape painted by Mr Baker are believable, because they are at times. Good beach read.
An ok read. I got lost with so many characters and didn't find the depth of them enough to relate to them and so when some lost their life or carried on no feelings were there in relation to them. I did enjoy the history and the lives of the main characters. This was a new adventure for me reading a new genre of books that I have never read.
A fairly good story with a jerky story line. It flows like real history so is not completely predictable. The author has some interesting interpretation of real history.
I have read all three in the series, although the first was my favorite, all three were really good. As I have said before, Pinkerton was a ancestor of mine and to tell the truth this period in American history is my favorite.
Didn't care much for this story, it's too fractured with no continuity to speak of. The characters were scattered in appearance, he l and forth, almost too much to enjoy.
Enjoyed this book a great deal!!!! The exploits of Robert Finn have led to many hours of great reading. Hope there will be another book in the series!!!!
Not sure how I feel about this book. The story is very good, it's the way the story is told. It is very disjointed. I love a good Western book, but this was not it.
I looked forward to this book, but after reading it all I can think about is WHY. I honestly feel there was no reason for this book, other than extend a story that did not need to exist. Sorry Mr Baker, I really really enjoyed numbers 1 and 2 sad about number 3
I wanted to like this much more than I did, but I simply could not connect with any of the characters. Historical fiction should engage the reader and bring the period and people involved to life. This was too stilted and dry. More history than story and just disappointing.
