This author has chosen to make some of his (her?) works available for free on Am. and I gave them a try.
This M/M short story -apparently the first in a yet to be published series- at first reminded me of Hollis Shiloh and her heart-wrenching habit of creating horrible, dystopian worlds where a romance manages to be born.
There is that, of course, in this alternate reality setting similar to classist XIX century Britain plus the werewolves. The main character and POV bearer, though, is not innocent and naive as he would be with Ms Shiloh: he has been hurt before and he has grown a thick emotional armour. His meeting his partner is underwhelming in that, never for a moment, the author obliterates the harsh reality of their situation.
This very adult approach is both rewarding and disappointing for lovers of romance. The work might require a sequel to untie all the emotional knots the author chooses to leave on his characters at the end of the story.
Writing is generally good and professional even if sometimes not sharp and cutting enough for the crude approach chosen by the author.
