RT Book Book Reviews FEBRUARY 2016 SEAL OF EXCELLENCE award winnerSometimes what haunts you is not a ghost. They're not alone in the house. With a baby on the way and a brand new house, it seems Ginny and her husband, Sean, are on their way to a fresh start. But strange occurrences and financial strain seem determined to keep the couple stuck in the past. Ginny begins to believe the house may be haunted...or that her husband might be trying to trick her into thinking so. As Ginny researches the house's former owner and the tragedy that happened there, it becomes clearer than ever that something is in the house with them. The question is, who...or what...is it?“Hart entices the reader to explore every shadowy nook and cranny of this traditional, chill-filled haunted house story.”--Publishers Weekly“In this superb, eerie tale, Hart draws on several conventions of the horror genre — a possibly haunted house, an unsolved kidnapping, a protagonist who’s fraying at the edges. But rather than soaking her story in dramatic displays of gore, Hart takes these elements and develops a restrained, quietly macabre atmosphere that is chilling and effective. Bringing her signature unflinching honesty about relationships to these time-worn tropes, she delves into the animus that can simmer under the surface, in the form of little secrets, between husbands and wives, parents and children.” -- RT Book Reviews Magazine

LITTLE SECRETS is the first book I have read by author Megan Hart. The synopsis caught my attention right away: a couple, expecting their first child after a previous miscarriage, moved into an old house. I was thinking of an old-fashioned ghost story, for the most part.

I will say that the ending, while I did partially predict it, was much more than I was expecting. I was absolutely riveted to the pages during that final 10%. Unfortunately, the rest of the book did very little in even coming close to that climatic ending.

Ginny and Sean's relationship, right from the start, just seemed off and too "matter-of-fact" to make me believe that they were actual people rather than characters on a page. There was a lot of petty arguing, and entirely too much talk about the pregnancy, etc., throughout the first 80% or so of the book. The slow pacing didn't really heighten the tension for me, as nothing of any major significance was discovered (other than things I guessed at), and the day to day relations were too dull to add any dimension.

While the ending WAS more than I anticipated, it didn't quite make up for the slow build up and two dimensional characters.

There is nothing quite like a great haunted house/ghost story. The best part of a ghost story is how it plays off of our beliefs. We all know that vampires, werewolves and all of those kinds of monsters don’t really exist, but ghosts and haunted houses are different, that shit is real…don’t get me going on that!

Megan Hart has created a perfect horror story for someone like me. We meet Ginny and Sean as they are moving into their new old house. Their relationship is built and exposed in a marvelous way. At first they come across as a near perfect couple, sure, they get on each other’s nerves from time to time, but that happens in any relationship. That’s what makes them and their relationship believable and authentic so early on in the book. As the story progresses, we get to know Ginny and Sean a bit better. The stress of the pregnancy, new home, and money issues adds to the chaos of their lives. They fight over the little things (don’t we all). I felt like I could relate to them, I could laugh at the things that married couples argue about. But then came the secrets, and these are not the “little secrets” that were advertised.

Ginny and Sean aren’t the only ones with secrets. That old house has secrets of its own. The first house that my wife and I bought was built in 1900, while I was reading, I transposed my own rooms and set up into Ginny and Sean’s house. I could vividly see the dark corners and the built-in units. I knew which steps creaked and I had heard, many times, those strange, unexplained noises. In fact, my own cat found a route from the basement into the kitchen cupboard. I was at home in this house.

Beyond all of this groundwork done in making me feel comfortable in Megan Hart’s Little Secrets, the best part of the whole story was that, “Luke, I’m your father” moment. Holy Hell, I never saw that coming!

Prepare to rock your socks off.

I read Little Secrets under the misapprehension that it is a ghost story. It's not. I'm not going to say anything more about what happens instead, cause the ending is far and away the best part and I don't want to spoil it, but if I'd known there was nothing supernatural in the plot, I probably would have skipped it.

It begins in a typical ghost story fashion: a couple buys a creepy old house. They are trying to start fresh, as Ginny is pregnant again after a slew of miscarriages and they've had some marital upsets. She's quit her job so she can focus on a healthy pregnancy, and her husband Sean is kind of bossy and patronizing, telling her not to unpack or do too much cleaning because of her history of miscarriages, but then he's too busy to help out much so nothing is getting done, and they bicker and squabble for page after page after page until I started wishing they'd just split up and be done with it.

Meanwhile, Ginny hears strange noises, and common household items disappear and the house has foul smells and heating problems and weird little cubbyholes. Sean insists nothing's wrong and blames it all on her hormones. They bicker some more. This goes on for a couple of hundred pages.

In the author's defense, I want to state that the book is smoothly written and she captures the mood of the characters so perfectly that I was starting to feel kind of grumpy myself on their behalf. But so little happens until the last 15% of the book...and then all hell breaks loose. I'm giving it three stars. It was moderately enjoyable.

Afraid of ghost stories and scary movies, this book is not easy to read for me. Especially when one is trying to read it late at night without waking the spouse. I picked this book up only because of Ms. Hart. I am heavily addicted to her stories. This one caught me off guard and I was thoroughly entertained. In Little Secrets, there are several misdirections which generates a constant tension.

Ginny and Sean are married and starting a new phase in their life. They move into a new house and Ginny is pregnant. I have to admit, it is not just the hint of ghosts which makes my stomach knotted up with anxiety. It is the relationship between Ginny and Sean. They have marital issues, big issues which are demonstrated so well between their interactions. Ginny is a wife who suffers under an overbearing husband. Sean is a husband who is overprotective and slightly patronizing. Honestly, I could not stand Sean. Even at the end of this book, I did not like him. It is a testament to Ms. Hart's writing how much I enjoyed this book despite my wish for Sean's death, especially at the end.

Written with an old fashioned ghost story feel, this is absolutely fantastic! An out of the corner of your eye read. Where it might be there... or it might not.

piecesofdamien:

My Mind
There are secrets everywhere. Within the house and the characters themselves. There's a time-clock essence to the story as the main character is pregnant. Is it the hormones or something far more sinister?

I read the book in nearly one sitting. Only reason it wasn't one sitting is my Kindle battery died.

Another home-run from Megan Hart!

Mysterious and a Little Creepy

This was such a good story. I loved the strength of the main character, Ginny. There were parts of the story that definitely had my heart racing.

It wasn't just about secrets between husband and wife, but also their new home's secrets.

Little Secrets by Megan Hart is a departure from her normal genres. But Hart makes a smooth transition from what I have read from her in the past to this paranormal thriller that was surprising and entertaining. I have read powerful emotional erotic dramas from Megan Hart before but this tension filled novel hearkens to early Gothic novels of Shirley Jackson brought into a modern era.

Ginny and Sean are making fresh changes to their life together. With a baby on the way, they embark on the purchase of a new home. Only their home isn't really new and it needs alot of work. The rooms go from cold to hot and the power has issues staying on. Ginny finds lights turned on and off when she knows she didn't leave them that way. Sean puts it down to her emotional state and the baby on the way.

Ginny and Sean have already lost one pregnancy and Sean is terrified of losing another. Ginny is just frustrated. She is bored and going out of her mind as a stay at home pregnant woman. Sean doesn't want her to do anything but then he rarely helps out around the new house. They are constantly going at one another and soon, Ginny begins to realize that maybe there is something else happening in her new home. That maybe it isn't Sean turning lights on and off. Maybe it isn't her forgetfulness when things go missing. Maybe there is something more to what is happening.

Ginny begins to do research on the prior owners of the home and finds out that a young girl went missing in the home. This only compounds her suspicions when the neighborhood children keep coming by to play with the little girl who lives in Ginny's home.

Is Ginny imagining all of this or is there something supernatural happening in her home. Or is this something that Sean has somehow cooked up to make her seem crazy. Ginny is not sure and she doesn't really know who to trust. No one wants to believe her and soon she will find herself in danger from the secrets of her new home.

I really enjoyed this book and found the twists and turns, though at times expected, still thrilling and well plotted. I have read a few of Hart's other books that are mostly erotic dramas which she does very well. She brings that same pace and storytelling to this Gothic ghost story. At first I found the character of Ginny a bit standoffish and hard to like. Sean was pretty much the same only a little worse, but as you move on in the book, Hart begins to reveal the nuances of their marriage and you can see why they are the way they are with one another. This is a relationship hanging on the ledge and we're not sure if it isn't best just to let go and fall.

Ginny's growing obsession with the happenings in her home go from fearful to confused to intrigued. When she begins to unravel the truth about what transpired in her home, this book makes the leap from good ghost story to damn good story. I'm not going to divulge much more because it is worth the reading.

Megan Hart is an accomplished storyteller whose popular novels may overshadow her talent and that is too bad. There's some really good stuff here. Almost, dare I say? Hitchcockian?

A really good read.

I am a huge Megan Hart fan and I was very excited to get a new experience from her writing. The synopsis had me interested and I could hardly wait to dive into this book.

Unfortunately, the beginning was very slow for me. Ginny and Sean had just purchased a house which included the belongings of the previous owner. Their marriage was already strained, she was pregnant and Sean was never a man that I felt even a connection to. In this old house, Ginny was finding strange things that shouldn’t be there, especially after the inspection before they bought the house. Sure old houses have their own noises and smells, but this house seemed to have more than one would expect.

Could there be ghosts in the house? Items would show up where she was painting, clues pointing to a girl named Caroline became obvious and secrets were buried in the backyard of this house. While all of this is going on, slowly unfolding before Ginny, she was still dealing with the secrets between her and Sean and the reality of how hard it was going to be to get their marriage back on track.

Finally the ending came and the suspense picked up. I found the last 15% of the book I was totally invested and turning those pages fast and furious, then it was over and I was disappointed that we spent the first half of the book on their relationship issues when I would much rather have more of the truth to this house and what happened after.

I want to stress that the plot jumped some major gaps for me, and this is a personal preference for this reader. The writing is smooth and characters are developed well. I just had an issue with the transitions in what I would consider plots contained in one book and I can’t go any farther without risking spoiling the ending. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely, but don’t go in thinking you are only getting a ghost story and be prepared to have the most intense part of the story end without full closure.

A spooky rollercoaster of a book

Five month pregnant Ginny, her husband Sean, and their cat Noodles move into a new house (new to them at least). The owner died four months ago and his son wanted a speedy sale. So now Ginny and Sean are in a house where strange things happen: the house is always cold, Ginny's favorite cup goes missing, Noodles the cat goes missing...and much more.

Ginny is struggling with her pregnancy after having miscarriages previously and wonders whether there is a ghost in the house or whether Sean is trying to drive her crazy.

On top of that, they find out that sixteen years ago the daughter of the house, Caroline, disappeared and Ginny convinces herself that she is back in the house as a ghost.

This is a super story, well told, with plenty of twists and turns and blind alleys. Ginny and Sean are portrayed well as a struggling married couple, with realistic dialogue and everyday problems.

The ending came as a complete surprise to me but ended a bit abruptly. I found myself wishing there was an epilogue to the story.

I recommend this highly to readers who like the horror genre, ghost stories, and haunted house fiction.

I went into this expecting it to be just another haunted house story, which was actually ok with me since I do love a good haunting. However it was much more than I expected. Ginny and Sean are making a new start, after having gone through some rocky times in their marriage when Ginny lost their first baby. Pregnant again, and hormones all over the place Ginny often feels like she is not alone in the house. There are scratching noises in the walls that a visit from the exterminator doesn't get rid of. There are strange hot and cold areas even though they have a brand new heating system. The power goes out frequently and food either disappears or gets rearranged in the fridge, unless maybe it is her husband Sean trying to drive her crazy. Sometimes in the dark Ginny is almost sure she sees someone, or something. As Ginny becomes more frustrated with Sean's lack of help in setting up their things even though he is constantly nagging at her not to do it by herself, she comes across some strange items left in the house by the previous inhabitants and wonders if her house is haunted. But it is so much more than that.
This was a very suspenseful and spooky read and I often found myself more spooked about the goings on than Ginny seemed to be.

I love well written haunted house novels and Little Secrets gripped me from page one. The character development is perfectly paced – as is the plot. Pregnant Ginny and her husband Sean have moved into a house with a history. A secret history. As soon as they arrive, strange events start happening. Their cat disappears, but her collar returns. Things are moved. Shadows move. The electricity keeps shorting out for no detectable reason. Meanwhile, Ginny and Sean have their own personal demons to fight. There have been too many secrets, too much hurt.

As they begin to find out more about the tragic history of the house, Ginny finds only one possible conclusion. They are not alone in the house.

I loved the way the story unfolded and the twist at the end was completely unexpected. A great 5 star read.

I hate having to give this book two stars but the truth hurts sometimes. Throughout the book I was hopeful it would become more interesting but it stayed pretty flat line for me. I was reading at one point just to finish, not because I enjoyed reading it.

I did like Ginny's character a lot and I hated Sean throughout most of the book. He kept prolonging the unpacking, didn't rake and basically didn't contribute to anything. The image of living out of boxes for months gave me major anxiety to read!

The ending I didn't see coming. Big surprise... sad surprise... I will admit I did believe maybe Carolines ghost was there or something supernatural. My heart ached for Caroline and those children but I didn't like the storyline. I also thought the ending was rushed...

I love a good haunting story, and Little Secrets definitely delivered that. Ginny and Sean were two interesting characters – something seemed off about them from the start, and that added to the suspense of the book, along with a slow build up. The story had a lot of twists and turns and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Megan Hart takes on horror, and I like it. It has that Hart feel, in the way the main character thinks and in the reveal of the "little secrets" that exist within her marriage. But we have the added stress of the classic battle between "am I going crazy" vs "is my house really haunted". I particularly enjoyed the final reveal, twisted as it is.

Ginni and Sean bought a house and are preparing for the birth of their first child after a couple of miscarriages.

The house was built by the previous owner himself....with some odd architecture and weird heating. Ginny senses things and thinks it might be haunted. Fuses get blown frequently, power goes out, things go missing - including the cat. The neighbor kids from next door are constantly coming into their yard, wanting to "play with the little girl". Ginny leaves food out, like her grandmother did, for the brownies, and the food disappears.

Ginny and Sean are in a rocky place, blaming each other for things, Sean being over protective after two miscarriages, Ginny seemingly not appreciating Sean's efforts to encourage her to indulge in painting again.....

Is it haunted or is Ginny imagining everything, pregnancy hormones raging?

This creepy, dark mystery is just the thing for October nights. Hart has created a spooky-house tale with rustlings in the walls, eyes that stare out of the darkness, and a husband-wife relationship suffering disintegration even as they await the birth of their first child. Although Ginny Bohn does not immediately come across as a sympathetic person, the reader soon develops a kinship with her as she attempts to discover the secrets of her new house. The tension ratchets up when she spots two children playing in her yard, yet is unable to find them when she searches. Intriguing concept and worth a read!

Really slow start. Was not feeling the main characters at all and I almost gave up but I'm a fan of the author so stuck it out. I'd say it didn't really pick up for me til the dinner party scene and that's about 120-130 pages in. It started getting more interesting and towards the end it was getting really good but then it was over. Everything seemed to be resolved in a couple pages when I would've enjoyed a couple more chapters about all the characters.

Disturbing book

This is a book filled with secrets. Nothing is quite as it seems. It's well written but slow to unfold. The ending was a surprise and felt rushed. I would have liked a follow up chapter on the outcome of everyone involved in the mystery. To explain more would be a spoiler. I enjoyed Ms Hart's Quarry Rd series. I didn't enjoy this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I want to read more of this author's books. This book was enjoyable, well written, and has a good ending. The story has aspects of a ghost but ends up being more mysterious than ghosts. There is a lot going on throughout the whole book and the story keeps your attention from beginning to end.

This was a really creepy story. What I thought was a ghost story turned out to be much worse. Sometimes I was confused about what was happening to Ginny. I thought her husband was trying to make her think she was crazy. I thought she was going mental from losing her baby. What she found out is something truly from a horror movie! I am glad things turned out alright.

Ok

It starts out good but the ending was a little unbelievable. To be honest, I really did not like Ginny or Sean. Both just a little self absorbed and whiny. Ginny was not a pleasant person. Plus who would stay in that house after what happened there. Really?

Creepy but not super scary. I certainly didn’t expect what ended up being all the sources of haunting. I found her husband so incredibly annoying. And the neighbor and her kids! Wow! I can’t believe how well she put up with all those annoying ppl.
