That’s what NYC musician, Elijah Dawson, is told constantly upon informing people of his Rule Book, but he disagrees. Rules help upkeep society, prevent chaos, and they help keep him from getting involved in meaningless relationships. Elijah learned the hard way that he’s terrible at being a boyfriend – people only end up getting hurt. To keep things simple, he lives his life by the Playboy Commandments:
1. No Repeats. 2. No Staying the night. 3. NO Kissing. 4. No Pet Names. Seriously. Don't. 5. The drunker the sex, the better.
Things change when he steps on an iPhone en route to his dead-end job. After connecting with the phone’s owner, he finds that the man is Grayson Paul – the son of one of the most powerful men in all of New York City. Grayson is so much more than the guys Elijah finds himself taking home from bars – he’s gorgeous, passionate, and completely uninterested in a relationship. This must be fate, right?
Only Grayson isn’t all that interested…
Being hired at the billion-dollar record label owned by his very own father was supposed to be the highlight of Grayson’s life. Instead, he spends his first couple years out of college as a professional fetcher of chai lattes. Buying beverages and making copies wasn’t exactly what Grayson wanted to do in the family business. His best friends want him to stop obsessing over work and get laid, or in the very least date a couple guys, but love and meaningless sex are nothing but distractions. What Grayson really needs is an artist of his own.
It seems that his prayers are answered when he realizes the stupidly charming guy who found his iPhone is an incredible musician. Talented isn’t powerful enough a word to describe Elijah – he has a voice like no other and looks capable of making girls and boys swoon.
Elijah doesn’t need to be told that he has potential as a performer – he knows he’s good. But no amount of money is worth having his privacy invaded. Unfortunately for Grayson, Elijah would rather work paycheck-to-paycheck than see his name on a gossip blog.
Maybe agreeing to compromise will help both men realize that what they really needed was right there all along.
SERIOUSLY condescending, spoiled, idiotic MCs (yes, the both of them!) I highlighted a few phrases, and I kept telling myself: "Keep going Line! You cannot DNF another one, an hour after the last DNF..." Turns out, I can!
Especially when an MC, at 24 years old, feels it's his right to just work on his OWN stuff, in his OWN way, in his dad's company. And let's remember that Grayson WILL inherit the company; that is not in question. But his scorn for doing ACTUAL work (like other employees AND having a job AND an office at 24 years old) and not just getting to do his own thing, left me with a feeling of serious misplaced entitlement.
Also: the general disdain shown towards pop music had me gritting my teeth! Pop music might not be deep or soul-wrenching or 'world-changing' or anything like that, but there IS a reason that pop music has existed since before most of us were born, and that it is STILL going strong today, so show some dogdamned respect! Next Elijah's 'rules' had me eyerolling so hard (they're in the blurb!!!), especially because the story sort of starts with him breaking one of them ('no sleep-overs'). And when he threw THIS out there, I lost what little respect I had left for him:
But it was cool knowing that everyone thought he was fantastic. It was nice for others to realize what he’d always known.
Lastly we had this blatantly obvious?weird?missed edit? eyerolling moment where one of the MCs is decribed like this:
'He had the tall, dark, and handsome thing going on, dirty blond hair, green eyes, a jaw line to die for, and an adorable dimple on the right side of his face when he smiled.'
HOW are you tall, DARK and handsome, when your hair is blond, you can't grow a beard, you have dimples and a 'babyface'?
I really tried pushing through, but I am not gonna waste fourSIX hours (it's a long book) on MCs I don't like. I am in a slump though, so it could be that nothing will work for me right now, but holy moly these idiots...
Elijah has rules when he dates men. Very strict rules including, no kissing, no snuggling afterwards, no second dates etc.. Safe to say, you get one wild night with him, and then no more. These rules have kept Elijah's heart safe and that's how he likes it. Besides being a sex rule maker, Elijah also loves to sing and is very talented. Music doesn't pay the bills for him, so he works in the mail room of a law firm which isn't really a fun job. One day while stepping off the metro train, he sees an iPhone on the ground.
That iPhone belongs to a man named Grayson, who works for the record label his father owns. His father is a no-nonsense guy who isn't the easiest person to work for or be related to. Grayson has started at the bottom of the company but really wants to prove to his father and co-workers that he has a lot to offer at the label. Losing his new iPhone isn't going to make a great impression. But luckily when he calls it, a man named Elijah answers and they meet for coffee so Grayson can get the phone back.
It's not until Grayson is on a blind date and Elijah is performing at the restaurant that their connection really becomes cemented. Grayson ditches his date (it wasn't going great anyway) and Elijah and him hook up. But what about Elijah's rules? He really thinks he has something with Grayson but is a little afraid to open himself up. When Grayson wants to pursue Elijah's musical talent for his record label...things become interesting.
This book has a strong start - I like Elijah's stand-offish attitude paired with Grayson who wears his heart more on his sleeve. They have good chemistry to start and very hot smexy times. No complaints here *wink* My problem started when they part ways after their first night together. They each have a lot to think about obviously, but they are apart for quite some time. I like that we meet their friends and see their individual lives, but I think they spend too much time away from each other in this book. Instead of building a relationship, we only see them truly together a few short times. Granted, they text back and forth, but it wasn't enough for me.
While I was invested in their chemistry, the music aspect didn't work as well. To me, Grayson never really felt like a music guy. We see him at work but I wasn't convinced he was in the music industry. It's just how it read to me.
And finally, I had issues with the end. It became kind of immature the way Grayson and Elijah's friends were acting and the big drama felt a little high-schoolish.
I liked these two together, but I needed more to truly be convinced of their HEA.
Head hopping. OMG, the head hopping. There is no rhyme or reason as to who is going to get their own paragraph of thoughts and reasoning. You just have to start reading and figure out who the hell is "talking" to you at the time. Is it Elijah this paragraph or Grayson? Maybe it's best friend Oscar or his girlfriend Eleanor or maybe it's best friend Fallon or Matt or even dad Harvey? I think their might have even been a few others. I had to re-read countless paragraphs to figure out whose perspective I was getting, mostly between the two MC's that switched constantly without any warning.
If that wasn't aggravating enough...the number of super unlikely coincidences in this book is ridiculous. New York is a big place. I'm sure that people bump into each other sometimes but the number of times this happens and the circumstances was just eye rolling and impossible to suspend disbelief for and it wasn't necessary.
The book ended on the expected HFN since it does say (book 1), however, the way Grayson responded to one of the coincidences about Elijah near the end of the book (the big climactic coincidence and all the immature behaviour that brought it about and the douchecanoe reaction on Grayson's part) had me on alert and borderline not liking him...and then the preview of the next book really brought that even more into focus. I think Elijah is probably too good for Grayson.
I'll probably read the next book to see if I'm right about Grayson and to see if editors or beta readers help the author get better about reigning in the head hopping or if it just keeps running rampant and out of control and part of the amateur writing style.
"Something real" felt more than a little contrived toward the end.
But the dialogue, at least in the first three-quarters of this singer/manager hookup-to-romance fairy tale, rings true. And there's a New York City charm to this fairy tale
. . . at least until the contrivances become evident in the plot, breaking the spell.
Thank you to the author for a review copy of this book. I really enjoyed the story of the reluctant rocker with commitment issues and the twist of fate that introduces him to the man that changes everything. Excellent first effort Nellie. I look forward to more stories!
An amazing debut novel by Kellie Christine. Elijah and Grayson aren't only not looking for love, they're running from it. Grayson throws himself into his work swearing himself off men and Elijah has a list of rules to keep anyone from falling for him and vice versa. Everything is going as planned until Grayson loses his phone and Elijah finds it. A chance meeting a few days after Grayson gets his phone back turns into a hot passionate night were Elijah breaks one of his main rules. Even though the two men stay away from each other they can't stop thinking about one another. "Something Real" is a tantalizing story of finding the love that you not only you didn't expect but didn't know you wanted. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Elijah Dawson may have a set of rules that he lives by, but from the moment he meets Grayson Paul, those rules seem to get harder and harder to follow. Grayson, however, is more than happy to remind him of those rules every chance he gets. Fortunately for us, their electrifying chemistry is pretty hard to ignore, especially with fate lending a hand. These two will not only work their way into each-others hearts, but the readers as well!
“I found the guy I need; he just doesn't need me.” -Grayson Paul
“Well, my dick was in somebody else’s mouth, and all I could focus on was how he wasn’t you, and how it didn’t feel right.” -Elijah Dawson
Something Real is an incredible story that will have you rooting for these two men to succeed, both independently, and together. One of my favorite parts of this story was watching them learn that sometimes, rules are fun to break! The amount of times I squealed in delight while reading this story is quite embarrassing. These two are way too charming to even try to describe. Ohhhh and I won't even mention the amount of times that I had to fan myself because of the more erotic scenes?! Holy sh*t, this author knows to write those!
You will not be disappointed with this one, that's for sure. I fell in love with some of the off characters while I found myself making hissing noises at others. This story has a bit of everything and I felt the ending was perfect, it did what any good story with a sequel does...it left me greedily wanting more. I'm very eager to see what happens in the next book!
Nellie Christine is definitely an author that we all should keep our eyes on! I know I will be. Her writing style is refreshing and her ability to captivate the reader early on is impressive. I'm also looking forward to reading her upcoming novel, Ride!!!Sending my congratulations to her for her debut novel! What a way to make an entrance into the world of writing!
So glad I gave this book a try after reading a review on Sinfully M/M Book Reviews. I really enjoyed it and loved all the characters. Can't wait for book 2!
I am blown away by this story. I loved it and can't wait for the next part. I'd been having problems finding a book that really spoke to me but this book pulled me out of my book funk.
Elijah and Grayson are great together! I love how they handled their problems face-on and didn't let it boil and fester until it was out of control. I hope this is a continued pattern for them in the future because these boys (especially Elijah) deserve their HEA. I can't wait for the first I love you's and I agree with Grayson, Elijah will be the first to say it.
The secondary characters were wonderful (well except for She who shall not be named--grrr!). Sometimes you read a book and you only ever see the main two characters but this book we saw others as well as got a little insight into their minds which was a welcome difference for me.
I'm looking forward to the rest of this series and will be reading more by this author and I suggest you do the same.
When you think you're done with books surrounding the music industry...then you pick up this book and realise there are fresh ideas out there. I was so hooked that I was upset at having to put the book down at 5 in the am to get some sleep. Loved the characters, the concept, the storyline. A really great read and I can't wait for more.
This was an amazing novel by Nellie Christine. A HOT, heartfelt story of two men who are total opposites. Elijah is a total player with rules that he never breaks. He has a beautiful voice that will make anyone melt. One day Grayson has lost his phone and Elijah finds it. The two meet and sparks fly. Grayson is the son of the owner of Millenium Records and is determined to prove himself. After meeting Elijah he finds out how amazing the man and the voice is. The sexual encounter is so much more than either has ever experienced. Grayson offers Elijah the opportunity of being a star, but Elijah doesn't want to deal with everything that comes with stardom. The two, especially Grayson think the thing that's between them can't last so they stop. Unable to forget the other, Grayson's best friend messages Elijah to meet Grayson at a bar that has open-mic night. Grayson is there to find a talent for the show he has put together that Friday. Elijah arrives quickly finding out it wasn't Grayson who invited him, but the two seem happy about it. Elijah has even gotten on stage and sang a song he just wrote to Grayson. He even agrees to sign with Millenium Records to help Grayson out. The two are amazing together even after Grayson's ex shows up. You will want to be with these two men as they discover what they really have with each other. I highly recommend this to all MM readers who love HOT, heartfelt and real romances. I loved it❤️
I really enjoyed this book by new author Nellie Christine. She allowed me to view Elijah and Grayson and their world in great detail. The descriptions of their environments and changing scenes really gave me a picture of where they were and what it was like to be there. I felt like I was there with them, seeing and experiencing everything they were. Their characters were well thought out and the emotions they experienced were naturally felt and expressed. The storyline was exciting and well researched. I was drawn in from the first page and I wish it could have lasted longer, after having fallen in love with both Elijah and Grayson. The interactions between the main characters and other characters were believable and interesting. The antagonists were well placed and even sympathetic up to a point, just like real people and not just bad guys in a book. The spicy scenes were very hot and the HEA was very satisfying. I wish I could give more than five stars. I look forward to seeing more from this author. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I was actually kinda surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I was a fan of Elijah and Grayson almost right away. The meet cute was a cute story (although, lbr, would probably never happen in real life NYC lol) and once they got together, the sex was pretty hot (the author does write some good sex!). I was annoyed with the "drama" near the end of the book with a BF and an Ex (totally unnecessary, and one of my peeves about a lot of books. Why must there always be drama????) but it wasn't enough to make me stop reading. More of just an eye roll.
I liked most of the secondary characters (Oscar, Eleanor, Josie, Lily, Mark) as well and felt they were not over or under used.
I hope there's a second book in the works. I really would like more Elijah and Grayson. :)
This was an easy, lighthearted love story. The first in the series. It was ok. I wanted to love this book not like it but I didn't get there. The scenes where the MCs were intimate were really HOT and well written. Also, I had to get used to the use of the word "leant". (past tense of lean). I had to get over myself upon realizing the word leant is used most often in the UK vs. leaned. All and all, it was a cute love story.
I really wanted to like this one. It had all the things I love rolled and gift wrapped for me but it just didn’t work. The characters were boring, the chapters were to long and I ended up almost not finishing cuz I was bored. I skipped 5 chapters and read the ending and it was meh 🫤
I enjoyed Ride and had high hopes for this one too.
First of all, I'll have to say that I'm impressed that this is Nellie Christine's debut novel. It was really good, not perfect, but what is? Especially when it's her first book. It's well-written and it has a natural, organic flow to it, even if the ending felt a tad rushed. I'm not overly fond of the multiple characters' POVs, though. Frankly, they were confusing at times. Still, I have to give the author props for giving it a try, it's not an easy style to pull off.
I have to admit I wasn't too sure what to expect when I started reading this book. It's long, but really, it's fast-paced, intriguing and enthralling enough that I barely felt the time I spent devouring it.
I loved Elijah, he was definitely my favorite. It was amazing to see his progression and how much meeting Grayson affected him and his rules. He was much sweeter than I imagined at first, for sure, especially with how he helped his sister with his niece and all. I liked Grayson, but there were times when I felt Elijah was too good for him. He definitely made up for it in the end, though. They had great chemistry and I really liked them together.
I loved Oscar and Eleanor! They were amazing characters and very good friends to Grayson and even Elijah. I so didn't like Fallon, so I was really glad about how that played out.
All in all, this was a pretty good read, one that I'll more than likely read again and that I highly recommend. I can't wait to see what Nellie Christine will have in store for us in the future.
*** Copy provided to the reviewer via Bayou Book Junkie for my reading pleasure, a review wasn't a requirement.***
I found this book and the characters annoying. The only person in this book that I like and could relate to was the sister of one of the MC. I notice that there is a book two but I'm one and done.
It's a shame there are not many books by this author, last time she published was 2017! She is really good, I felt a connection with the characters and wish was there more to read!
A really fun, sweet, sexy M/M romance. My only real issue with it was it seemed like everyone was narrating, which go really confusing. It would have been so much better if it would have just been the two MCs narrating, and not adding in perspectives of their random friends/ frenemies/ colleagues.
Over 300 pages with give or take 2 weeks time frime and oh boy, was it a looooong book.. Those changing within an eye blink POVs were really confusing and unnecessary. And some of the events were so chaotic that my mind was blown - not in a good way. That scene in front of the hotel - beaten ex, argument between main characters, Grayson leaving, Eli walking away chased by Fallon.. dear God.. why? I saw that the author is planning a second book and sadly, I'm probably not going to read it because I already know that it will be one big struggle with Eli on tour and Grayson staying at work. Been here, done that. There is a lot of books with this kind of problems already so it's nothing new and definitely not interesting. I'm not trying to be mean but I can see that it's a fresh author so I would advise some guidence from beta readers, editors and other people. And also to do reaserch among books with similar plots.
Elijah lived by a set of rules that involved no repeats,no kissing etc. When he meets Grayson all those rules fly out the window. It was a real treat to see Elijah change all his ways for the love of Grayson. The love was sweet and the sex sweeter. Loved the ice skating. Looking forward to the next book. Thank you.
OMG I just loved this book. From the beginning I could not put this down I loved how the roles kept flipping from the bad boy to first times I just loved the real ness as for all of us no matter how old there is firsts in our lives and you don't have to be perfect to be innocent. I will recommend this author everywhere I can't wait for the next book. Well worth every cent.
Loved the characters and story but the constant switching viewpoints without clear demarcation kept pulling me from the story as I had to keep going back to figure out whose viewpoint I was getting. At the very least I prefer a double paragraph space between different viewpoints to make it clear that something has changed in the story. Maybe this was an intentional choice for the writer but it was something that took a four star book down to three stars.
