So this was my big pandemic read - and I was just entirely blown away by this incredible book. It helped that I read it as part of a course offered by the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research, which provided a much broader canvas for appreciating what a masterpiece this is. The social commentary, the sheer wealth of knowledge about the world, the characters that leapt off the page - to be unoriginal - this was just the best investment of my time (which is how I often judge books - since time is so limited). I first read this as a freshman in college and realize I was a callow English Lit major at the time not to have registered how truly magnificent this work is. I now follow the Melville Society on Facebook!

A dense and richly symbolic tale of obsession and revenge that offers profound insights into human nature. Many readers find its heavy prose and lengthy digressions on whaling tedious.

I love Moby Dick. Each paragraph is intensely filled with information, metaphors, and drama. It is a book worth reading if only to open a random page and breathe in the substance and sustenance that such powerful words can convey. It will stimulate your mind to delve deeper into your creativity and open a stream of consciousness beyond the everyday world of simple repetition.
