"Dear sister," he said, pulling her close, embracing her in a warm hug. "I'm so very sorry for all of this," he whispered in her ear. Content in the embrace of her long-lost brother, the meaning of Jarlen's words hardly registered. He was going to protect her from now on. She would be safe. She would be-- Click... She felt a coolness around her neck as the collar snapped shut.
I will never forget what you did to me. Hide from me if you must, but sooner or later I will have your blood, dear brother. ~ Viola
Betrayed by her own brother, forgotten by her friends, Viola has lost everything dear to her. Held captive by the king, she is forced to fight for her life as her brother once did. Is this a life even worth living? Probably not. Is surviving long enough to have your revenge?
Jeff Gunzel grew up in Chicago Illinois. Even though he now lives in Westminster Colorado, "Da Bears" will always be a part of his soul! He eventually graduated from Devry University with an Associate of Applied Science in Electronics & Computer Technology. But his first love will always be writing fantasy novels. You can blame that on years and years of playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Viola is captured and forced to be trained as a killer in the pit. This reminded me of the barbaric practices of the Roman empire, where humans were forced to battle in the arena for the entertainment of the rich and the masses...shudder.
Torture and cruelty are just two of the themes of the story, although, there is also friendship, loyalty and love.
There are some great characters - both good and bad - and a wonderful sense of place, making this a compelling read. Surprises, too.

Jeff has done it again!!! Viola! Jarlen, what can I say these characters are amazing! I thought for sure this might be the last book in the series. To my delight it is not! I can't wait to read more of this world! With a completely new twist! Must read!!!
