تحمل هذه الرواية الكثير من التساؤلات عن الهوية والهجرة والحرب مقابل الحب بين شخصين من خلفيات ليست فقط مختلفة ولكن في حرب تاريخية مازالت قائمة

مؤلفة هذه الرواية لابد أن وضعت بعض من تجربتها الذاتية فهي ابنة لأب فلسطيني وأم يهودية . حاولت في هذه الرواية أن تبين الوجه الإنساني لكلا الطرفين بدون التحيز لطرف معين.




لا أتفق مع بعض ما جاء في الرواية ولكنها بشكل عام جميلة وتستحق القراءة

برتقال إسماعيل ، الجنون السردي الذي يستحوذ على حواسك الخمس بل الست . تبدأ الحكاية بسالم الذي يشعر بالمرارة لان والده لم يسمح له بقطف ثمار البرتقال الناضجة ، كان ما يزال صغيراً على هذا العمل الشاق ، ولم يكن لتسمح له الحياة بنيل ما يريده بسنواته السبع . يمر الوقت سريعاً ليستيقظ ذات صباح على صوت المدافع وهي تضرب يافا بعد جلاء الانجليز . فالمستوطنات الفلسطينية بدأت معاولها بفرش الاسنان على التراب الذي صار وليمةً للكل ، ليكون التهجير وهجر البيوت هو النجاة من الموت ، فحادثة مثل دير ياسين لا يمكن أن تُنسى . يذهب سالم مع عائلته التي هاجرت الى مدينة الناصرة ، ويمضي الوقت سريعاً كذلك . ليصطدم سالم ذات صباح برغبة الاسماعيلي - والده - ببيع كل الأملاك للحكومة الاسرائيلية، فيرفض التخلي عن وطنه لكنه يُجبر على الانصياع ، فالفقر الذي يسلمك الى العجز لا يمكن له أن يسيطر أكثر من ذلك . يعود سالم من يافا التي لم تعد يافا ، ليفاجأ برحيل الأم وأخيه الصغير رافان ، ويدفعه الضعف الرازح على كتفيه للهروب مرة أخرى الى لندن ، ليرافق أخاه الاكبر حسان مشوار اثبات الوجودية . تستقبله لندن بضبابها وفرصها الكثيرة ، يعمل ليلاً نهاراً ويصعد السلالم الى الجامعة ، وفي سنته الأخيرة يقع في هاوية الحب ، جود الراهبة اليهودية كما يصفنها ، حفلة صاخبة تنتهي باصطحابها الى المنزل ، وتبدأ القلوب بالنبض الجارف . يصطدم الحب بالعائلتين اليهودية والعربية ، لكن رسالة من الام الهاربة بعد كل هذا الوقت تنقل الحكاية الى بيروت ، لم تعد الام التي هربت من الفقر والحاجة أمه ، ولم يعد أخاه الصغير أخاً له بعد الان . فيصطر الى الهرب مرة أخرى ولكن هذه المرة الى ذراعي جود لان ذراعيّ امه لم تعد بذاك الدفء ، ويعود الصراع ، جود التي تصدت لغضب الأهل ، وسالم الذي واجه رفض العرب ، كان كل منهما يعلم أنهما سيبنيان بيتا ، كل طوبة منه وسام شجاعة . يتزوجان رغم أنف الجميع وتنتقل الحكاية الى الكويت بعد ولادة الجيل الثالث ، صوفي ومارك ، التوأمان اللذان سيقضيا العمر وهما تائهان بين العبرية والعربية والانجليزية ، تتوالى الأحداث ليظهر رافان كحبل يشد على عنق سالم ، فالدم الذي يسري في عروق الأهل لا يمكن الهروب منه . يتوه سالم مرة اخرى بين القضية والعائلة والبيت الذي بناه بمساعدة جود ، يكتشف تلاعب رافان بالسياسة والموت ، فيقرر أن يطرد أخاه الصغير لكن بعد فوات الأوان ، تهجر جود سالم التائه وتعود برفقة التوأمين الى الوطن الذي عرفاه ، يزورهم سالم بين الفينة والاخرى وهو يحاول أن يتشبث بالعائلة والقضية ، لكن منذ متى كان ذو البالين قادراً على تحقيق اهدافه . تمضي الحكاية بوتيرة أسرع ، لم يعد سالم يجد مغزىً لحياته بعد سنواته الخمسة والأربعين ، فيقرر العودة الى البداية ، الى البيت المهجور في يافا ، الى القضية التي كانت هاجساً لحياته ويطارده مثل الأشباح في الأزقة المظلمة ، يحاول سالم كحال العرب - دائماً أن يعيد كل شيء كما كان ، فيجد أن أطفال الحرب قد كبروا وصاروا يحاربون بعضهم على أشياء لا يتذكرونها . يكتشف بعد كل هذا الوقت أن كل ما بحث عنه طوال حياته قد ضاع في النهاية ، وفي المشهد الأخير امام البحر يعود لذراعيّ جود لكن بعد أن أصبح الشيب جزءاً كبيراً من ملامحه . هذه الرواية ليست ادعاءً وردياً بأن " كل معضلة ستُحل إن أحب أحدنا الآخر " ، بل هي الإثبات على أن الحب من الممكن أن يبقى صامداً إلى الأبد . أين يكون الوطن ؟ هل هو ما بنيناه بأيدينا أم هو ما ورثناه عن عائلاتنا ؟! ربما هنا في برتقال إسماعيل سوف تتضح الإجابة .

آخر كتاب للسَنة✨

قضية فلسطين هِي القضية الأولَى التي وعينا عليها 🇵🇸
حلمُ الطفولة الساذج أن تنتهي الحَرب ولا يموتُ اَحد.

كبرتُ وكبرَت الحَرب.
ولم يتوقف الموتُ ابدًا.

وقعَ الكتاب بينَ يديّ صدفة غير مُخطَط لها.
واضحٌ من البداية أن الرواية ذاتَ بُعدين.
عربي و اِسرائيلي.
حيادي مُجرّد.

ما يعطي الرواية قوتها
هو أن الكاتبة هي ثمرةُ حب مشابه للذي كتبت عنه.

بدأت الرواية بداية قوية
ذاتَ بعدين الى حين التقاء بطليها.

بعدَ ذلكَ نقطة ضعف في المنتصف.
ربما لا يجده البعضُ كضعف
لكن في المنتصف وجدتها بطيئة ومملة قليلًا.
كأنها ضاعت لفترة.

وبدأت الأحداث تثيرُ فيّ السخَط
ليسَ من النوعِ الذي اتمكن من تقبله -رغم واقعيته- .

لَم اَحب أن أشهد على القرارات الخاطئة
وعلى التناقض و الاضطراب الذي أعلم أنه سيدمر كل شيء.
كنتُ اوّد أن أصرخ في السطور: لا! لا! لا!

من الصعب الحكم على القضية.
تدمر الحرب حياة الأشخاص دون أن تمسهم فعليًا.
سالم بطل الرواية.
كان يملكُ حياةً يحلم بها أيّ أحد.
ترك كل شيء
ليعود ويرمي نفسه في حرب نسيته منذ سنين.

أدب المقاومة الحقيقة هو القادر على تخليد القضية، ولا تخليد يساوي تخليد الحب لشخوصه وحكاياته ويجعل المستحيل ممكنا ويعيد للزمن معجزاته.

هي رواية عن قصة حب، ظاهر ممتع يجذب الأنظار، لتجد تحت قصة الحب تلك هموم أوطان منهوبة، وأصحابه مطرودين من جنته، يقعوا تحت طائلة قانون ظالم، ويدفعوا تمن حقيقتهم، حقيقة أنهم أصحاب وطن طمع فيه غيرهم، حقيقة أنهم لم يحملوا بندقية وحملها عدوهم.

برتقال إسماعيل: رواية تجمع الشتات والفروق بين البشر لتنسج لوحة جميلة تسر الناظرين.

من أفضل الروايات التي قرأتها وتناقش القضية الفلسطينية لأنها ناقشت قضية البشر، كل ذلك بسرد ممتع وتشخيص وتوصيف ممتاز وترجمة فائقة الجودة كأنها مكتوبة باللغة العربية.

A goodreads giveaway book.

A keen insight into the Jew-Palestanian conflict and the way it affects human lives caught within it.

I couldn't help compare it to the The Almond tree by Michele Coran Corasanti which handles the same theme from a different point of view. The Almond Tree book deals with the story of an Arab who battles poverty and the strife in the country to rise above his stature, he makes his way to the US as a renowned professor and then comes back for his family who were unable to escape as he could. Hajaj's story is about a Palestanian boy, Salim and a Jewish girl, Judith who are on the opposite sides of the strife. They find love on neutral ground and attempt to build a life yet find their prejudices and differences constantly threatening their happiness.

The Gist:

As a boy, Salim flees his house, forsaking his beloved orange tree in Jaffa when the war breaks out between the Jews and Palestanian Arabs. To make matters worse, his mother leaves the family too, taking only their youngest sibling Rafan with her. Years later, Salim heads to London to pursue higher studies and falls in love with Judith, with a story of her own. Despite scepticism and stiff opposition, they get married and start a new life away from Israel, but eventually find themselves at crossroads, confronting their past and prejudices.

What works:

The characters come alive in the pages and win the empathy of the reader. This need to break away from the strife when everything else reiterates their cultural notions is done quite well.

The story flows very well and offers a objective view and emotional repurcussions of the situation in Israel.

The narrative is powerful and the writing style is smooth.

What doesn't:

The pace is a bit slow in the beginning, the letter in the beginning did not make sense till I read the end and then I had to read the beginning chapter again to make sense of it. But that highlights explains the skill of the writer and credit to her for handling such a difficult subject with such tact.

In a nutshell, a great read, well written and offers an interesting perspective on a conflict that needs to be documented more in literature.

How can I start reviewing this book? It’s this kind of book that you end it with an ache in your heart, I believe in this case because the story still continues in real life.
It’s a story of a boy, with a kind heart who got lost in the life he grew up to live. That’s a simplified version of the book. But when the reason he is torn is the loss of a home and a mother, the pain is magnified.
I really felt that Claire wrote this book from the heart, from a pain she has endured. This made me resonate with it, and feel the pain too.
It’s one of those heavy, must read books.

This was a book I wanted to like.

In Part 1 we find out about the childhoods of Salim and Jude. Salim who lost his family home in the Nakba and ends up in the UK. Jude who is the child of jews who suffered greatly in Russian and Nazi pograms. The two of them - Salim the victim and Jude the child and grandchild of victims - meet at university and fall in love. There is strife with their families; mild strife not fully explored. Salim seeks out his mother and younger brother, a PLO supporter, but realizes that he can't find his way back to an old idea of 'home'. He returns to Jude and asserts that she is now 'home' for him.

Part 1 is competently written with sections of beautiful writing. Salim is a lot better written than Jude - the quote on the cover of Salim's thoughts as he leave Jaffa is poignant and evocative.

Part 2 is six years later - Salim and Jude are married with six-year old twins and living in Kuwait. That was a problem for me -it seems so obviously a recipe for disaster for this couple that I would have liked to understand why they made the decision. As well as living in Kuwait, Salim has morphed into an abusive asshole: insecure at work, he can't hold down a job; he feels too English for the Arabs and too Arab for the English; he resents his Jewish wife and strives to hide/deny her culture; he bullies and ignores his children and judges his son for his fair colouring and for not being 'a man'. He is simply a horrible man, an awful husband and terrible father. And Jude? She's a sweet little thing who keeps the peace - she serves only to further highlight Salim's hatefulness.

Maybe all this is true - I read some of Hajaj's interviews on-line; she was raised in Kuwait and is estranged from her father - BUT Salim in part 1 was essentially a decent and rather gentle soul and to simply present him as such a misogynistic monster without taking the reader through his transformation renders it unbelievable.

The rest of the book continues in this vein. Salim gets involved with the PLO. He effectively abandons his family and is especially hateful to his son. And it all ends in tragedy.

كيف استطاعت كلير حجّاج أن تتناول قضيتين بكل هذه الحياديّة؟
جاءت الرواية متزامنة مع شكوكي الداخليّة، مع شتاتي ومحاول البحث عن هويّة وذات دون تبعيّة مذهبية أو عقيدية حتّى.

ماذا سيحدث ان اجتمعت عقيدتان ببعضهما؟
ماذا سينتج بعد هذا الاجتماع...

هذا ما حكته الرواية بوصفها البليغ، منذ ضياع سالم وابتعاده عن شجرته ، إلى تلك اللحظة التي نمى فيها الجيل الثالث (مارك وصوفي).

ما هو الوطن؟
هل هو المكان الذي تنشأ فيه، أم هو المكان الذي تنتمي إليه؟
وما هي الصعوبة التي تنمو تدريجيًا في داخلك بحثًا عن الانتماء الحقيقي؟ ..

لقد شعرتُ بأن هذا الكون في جميع محطات سالم عبارة عن منفى..

لقد جاب كل شيء بحثًا عن انتماءه الخاص،
كما جابته من قبله أمه.


هذا ما أستطيع قوله.

طِفل، أرادَ وطنًا.. بحثَ عنهُ في كُلِ مكان، جابَ الغرب والشرق..
أضاعً كُل الأوطانِ التي لاقاها في طريقه، أم الأوطانُ أضاعته؟
- بيتُه، يافا، أُمه، أباهُ، أحتُه، أخاه رافان، وحتى لندن، ودراستهُ ،وعملهُ وَكذلكَ جود، وأطفاله..
سال، أو سالم.. لم يكُن سِوى طفلٍ اُنتزِعت منه لحظة قِطافِه لوطنه -بُرتقالته-، فعانى مِن ذلك كثيراً فقدَ الكثير..
أمّا جود، الفتاةُ الشُجاعة -المينش- التي حاربت مِن أجلِ حُبها، كانتَ شُجاعةً في عيشها وسط الصحراء وتقلباتها، كانتَ شُجاعةً في تربيتها لطفليها -النصف عربيين- ..
لم تنسلخ مِن عالمها، ولكنها لم ترضَ الخنوع إلى أنواع الظلم على الذين أسموهُم في صغرها أعداءاً لها، كانتً ذكيّةً فطِنةً مُنذ طفولتها، لم تتربَ على الحقد أبداً، هذهِ الشابة التي لم تتغير أبداً، طيبةُ قلبها احتوت الكثير وغفرتَ للكثير..

قصةُ حُب هذهِ اليهودية والفلسطيني، قصةٌ تُخلدُ في الذاكرة، كيفَ أنهُما حاربا معاً في مُقتبل عمرهما عادات أهلهم وَشعبهم من حولهم، مُتحدين الاختلافَ وَ العنصرية والتعميم الأرعن.
مِن هُنا نتعلم دُروساً وَنشقُ درباً إلى التفكيرِ بمنطقيةٍ إلى المُستقبل، قصتهُما معنى لكُل من أرادَ معرفةَ حقيقةَ بشاعة العُنصريةً والتعصب..

للحقِ، عشتُ معهم الطفولة والشباب والكهولة.. <3

في 1948 يضطر "سالم " -بطل الرواية الفلسطيني - وأسرته للنزوح عن يافا منها إلى الناصرة ليمكث فيها سنوات على أمل العودة ، وما أن تتقطع حبائل آماله يغادر إلى إنجلتر . ويلتقي ب" جود" اليهودية ودون أن يشعرا يقعا في الحب المحرم إجتماعيا المحكوم بالفشل مادام "سالم" قابعا تحت وطأة الأحساس بالدونية تشده جذور الحنين ليافا وبُرتقالها.

كنت متحمسة جدا لقراءة الرواية ، لرؤية ما يكون عليه وجهة النظر اليهودية في القضية الفلسطينية ، هل وُفِقت " كلير حجاج " في نقلها ؟ أو ما كنت أرجوه من نقل صورة محايدة لا منحازة ؟ لا أعتقد ، فالقضية الفلسطينية قضية " غياب المنطق " لا يكتب عنها أحد دون أن تضيع منه الموازين ويتخبط بالتاريخ و موروثاته.

أخيرا وليس آخرا، يجدر بي الإشارة إلى عمل المترجمة الشاق الغير محمود ! فأكثر ما أكره أن أرى نصاً العامية فيه منبسطة بأسمالها.

من السخافة أن تتخذ الحياد موقفا في قضية تدعي أنك قد ملكت زمامها ، و خطيئة أن تدعي المثالية في سردك و حياتك ، حين لا تكون المثالية إلا جريمة.

الرواية تستعرض حياة فتى، ترك بيته قسرا من يافا ،مع أسرته كما ألوف الفلسطينين ، بعد نكبة ٤٨ و لجوءهم داخل أو خارج فلسطين، و تتحدث عن نشأته ثم "هروبه" إلى الخارج لكي يبتعد عن ما ارتبط به مسبقا ( أولى التناقضات) .
ثم تبدأ قصته مع " اليهودية" التي لم تطأ أرض فلسطين ولا تنتمي بشكل فعلي إلى تقاليد قومها، و تحديهما للصعاب ليجتمعها معا ، في رابط الزواج، و من ثم إنجاب أطفال ، تعاهدوا ألا يطلعوهما على ماضيهما ، في انسلاخ تام عن خلفيتهما القومية و التاريخية و الدينية ، والذي لم يدم طويلا.
القصة ، تصلح قصة ما قبل النوم وليس سرد في ظلال تاريخ الفلسطيني.
الكاتبة حاولت تجنب الصدام مع المجتمع "اليهودي"، حين صورت الطرفين على أنهما ضحايا، أو ربما خشيت أن تمنع روايتها من النشر في ظل سيطرة "معاداة السامية كتهمة مجهزة، و عرضت كثير من المسوغات التي تجعل قيام اسرائيل هو ردة فعل ،و أن علينا أن نتقبله في اطار التعويض و الترضية ( على أساس أننا في برنامج مسابقات) ، كما تجنبت إلى الاشارة بشكل واضح إلى الجرائم المتوالية في تاريخنا الفلسطيني و تحميل الاحتلال المسؤولية عنها.
كما صورت الفلسطيني على أنه شخص متأهب دوما للعنف، و أنه يعتدي على الأبرياء ، دون أسباب او دوافع.

شعرت بالتقزز في كل مرة كان يُطعن فيها سالم من "حبيبته" و التي ينقلب فيها الموقف كما دوما في تاريخ الفلسطيني ، ليتبدل الضحية بالجلاد .

خذلتني الرواية، كنت شغوفا للحصول عليها و قراءتها على غرار مثيلاتها من الروايات التي تسرد الحق الفلسطيني بقوة و تدلل على عدوان و همجية ودموية هذا الاحتلال.

الحياد و المثالية لا وجود لها حين يكون الأمر متعلقا بالوطن و دم أبناءه و إرث طالما حافظنا عليه بأرواحنا و دماؤنا.

The premise of this book is pretty solid. I was really looking forward to reading it. However, it failed to deliver. I can’t quite understand why. It maybe down to writing style,but it was just too slow. :-(. Disappointed.

الحكاية عبارة عن قصة حب جمعت بين يهودية وفلسطيني، ولكن الحياة الواقعية أقسى من خيالية قصص الحب.
كلير حجاج تُحاكي الواقع، فلطالما تسائلت عن نتيجة الحياة بين شخصين من ديانتين/ طائفتين مختلفتين، الحلم بالسلام، بالحلول الوسطى هل يوجد على أرض الواقع؟

هل يمكن لشخص واحد أن يكون عربياً ويهودياً في ذات الوقت، هذهِ الصراعات تناولتها الكاتبة في هذهِ الحكاية.
تستحق القراءة جداً.

This was surprisingly well-written and realistic considering its initial premise, of love between someone with Jewish roots and someone with Arabic Palestinian ones. We know the premise is not impossible, the author herself comes from such a mixed family and there are other examples as well. Initially, as readers, we are a bit afraid the Oranges will turn quickly sour, underneath a saccharine taste of artificial canned juice.

But it's not the case. In fact, it gets so life-POV realistic I would hesitate to still label it a love story, at least not in the romantic couple centered way (the way the word love is currently coded first). The story aims for a bittersweet ending (the only part of it I found not very likely), but many parts building up to it were plainly bitter.

Despite their best intentions, people start behaving badly towards their immediate family for the sake of what their original family ties tell them it should be the right thing to do. No matter how destructive and self-destructive it is, they can't seem to stop. I think this rings true and bitter for many other people in the world, beyond those caught in a multicultural landscape and conflict.

Of course, that's not to say that the author doesn't succeed in painting a wonderful picture about the history of Palestine and the complicated, fraught relations and fragile egos and prides involved there. If you don't know much about the area and how it went down, this is a great crash course, as far as fiction is concerned.

I was thrilled to receive this book through a first reads giveaway and was engrossed from the very beginning. Despite being a work of fiction, it was a timely story to read as I began to follow on the nightly news the events that are presently occurring in Gaza. The story of Salim, a Palestinian, and Jude, a Jew, is a love story that is almost cursed from the beginning as the two of them try to live a life together while creating a family away from the politics of racism, war, and hate.

It is a beautifully written book that is emotional, poetic, and deeply insightful. The characters of Salim and Jude are sensitive, realistic, and believable with their own individual faults and insecurities. The description of the city of Jaffa and its orange trees creates a heartfelt setting that is continually carried on throughout the book. I finished reading Ishmael's Oranges, but continued to contemplate the story long afterward as I found it to be a truly heart wrenching and meaningful read.

فكل منطق�� في فلسطين تستطيع اخراج قصة منها يبرز فيها الألم والمعاناة في مزج بين الأحداث السياسية التي تقع على الأرض المسلوبة والانسان بكافة هوايته
هي قصة أرض البرتقال التي تعلق بها سالم وحاول استعادتها من الصهاينة وقام بكل ما يستطيع لإرجاعها متناسياً بذلك كل من أحبوه وتمسكوا به
فأحياناً يصل الأمر الى الأنانية
فيجب أن يكونوا من حولك من ناس تحبهم أغلى من الارض خاصة ان كنت تعلم انها قضية خاسرة
دائما في كل انسان يعيش صراع الهويات تمثل الامر في جود التي تصالحت مع نفسها ومع واقعها وأعطت طاقة كبيرة للحب ولاستمرار هذا الحب .. وكانت تنتظر المقابل
من الامور الملاحظة بحال العرب هو فرض ما قام به الاباء على ابنائهم من ديانة واسلوب حياة وقرارات ومظهر لباس وممكن تفكير واختيار تخصص الدراسة ... لديهم نوع من الانانية في التعامل مع أبنائهم .. وذلك خطأ ومنفر ويزيد عدم التفاهم بين الأطراف

A story about a Jewish woman and a Palestinian man meeting and marrying hardly sounds like the recipe for a good read, however what a treasure this proved to be! Claire Hajaj draws on her own experience in writing this story of love and hate starting back in 1948 and coming almost right up to date, this puts a new light on the troubles in the Middle East currently happening between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza strip. Every emotion is covered in this story, love, hate, happiness and sadness. Beautifully written and a real education - this should be a bestseller!

* الغريب في الرواية أنه ليس هنالك آي جانب ديني من طرف سالم ولكن جود كنت -نوعًا ما -تقوم بأعمال دينية

Salim was born and grew up in Palestine until his family had to flee from their home because of the war. Jude is an English Jewish girl who struggles with her identity growing up. One day, the meet and fall in love. But is love enough to conquer their differences, even with everyone else telling them that their relationship is doomed?

This was such a captivating book, I loved it from the first pages — it was beautifully written and both of our main characters were well developed. I just would’ve liked to also have the POVs of their two children. We can kind of see how everything affects them through the eyes of their parents, but I was constantly asking myself how they truly felt.
It’s a very quiet and character focused book, and as I was approaching to the end I started wondering how it was going to end, because I couldn’t really see which way it could go. Let’s just say, I wasn’t expecting that ending! It was one of those situations where I had to close the book and just stand there, with my mouth hanging open and staring at the wall for a few minutes because I couldn’t believe what I just read… 🙈

This book is also easy to read and understand even if the reader has little to no knowledge about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as the author does a great job of explaining things and putting everything back into context.

But what was life worth once all the dreams have become dust?

ما فائدة الهوية عندما تصير هي الدوامة التي تبتلعنا و تمتص منا كل فرصة للسعادة ؟؟
برتقال إسماعيل رواية مؤلمة، عن أنفسنا التي تتمزق خلال الحروب، عن صراع لم نختره و لا يد لنا فيه، عن البحث عن ذواتنا بعد أن نفقد قطعة الأرض التي نسميها وطنا، هل نعرف من نكون ؟؟ ما فائدة من نكون أصلا أمام الدماء و رائحة الموت ؟؟
يتمزق سالم و يمزقنا معه في نص سلس بديع، ينسى قارئه أنه لم يكتب بالعربية لقوة الترجمة و جمالها .
جعلني هذا الكتاب أبكي ثم أتساءل، لماذا لم نكن بشرا فقط، يكتبون على بطاقاتنا التعريفية "إنسان" ثم يمضون، ما فائدة الوطن و الإنتماء و الهوية أمام بشاعة الحرب ؟

Un palestinien et une juive peuvent-ils s’aimer dans le contexte de la guerre ? La force narrative de ce roman et de ses personnages est indéniable et j’ai été très touchée par certains passages, et un peu moins intéressée par d’autres, en raison du contenu un peu inégal du livre, à mon sens. C’est tout de même une très belle histoire qui contient des messages très forts de tolérance et de paix.

manchmal braucht man eben einen kleinen schmöker. aber an sich eig gar nicht so ein krasser schmöker, ich find vor allem das cover sieht aus wie der krasseste schmöker überhaupt. themen sind nach wie vor wichtig, zwischendrin hat es sich etwas gezogen aber am ende wurde es wieder richtig gut. das ende hat mich zerstört.

I feel this didn't live up to its potential. This is a huge story to try to fit within the pages of one book and I don't feel it was done particularly well. I think I read somewhere that this was inspired by the authors history, being of Jewish and Palestinian descent. At the end of the novel she speaks of being inspired by her mother, which surprises me in some ways as the focus was very much on the father in this story and we only really get a superficial glimpse at mum as she forms a part of dad's story. The mother's character wasn't really formed very well at all and the father was decidedly unlikeable. There were moments in this story that I really enjoyed and sections that were well formed but overall it was a bit of a let down.

ورغم أن الرواية ليست سيئة من الناحية الفنية وترجمتها ممتازة
م استطع التعاطف مع موضوع الرواية في محاولة تقديم اليهودي والفلسطيني باعتبار كلا منهما ضحية
وليست مشكلتي هنا مع الشخصية اليهودية فقد تعاطفت كثيرا مع بطل فيلم بيانست لرومان بولانسكي
لكن في موضوع فلسطين لايمكن اختزال جريمة وجود اسرائيل. في حكاية حب تشبه نمط ابن الحرامي وبنت الشاويش
لم أحب أيا من أبطال الرواية
لا الفلسطيني
ولا اليهودية
وهذا ما جعلني أقاتل كي أكمل الرواية وأفشل في النهاية

Die Handlung beginnt in Jaffa, im Jahr 1948: Der siebenjährige Salim, Sohn eines palästinensischen Orangenzüchters, wird eines Tages von den Israeliten aus seinem Haus vertrieben und trägt fortan den Traum in sich, zu dem Orangenbaum seiner Kindheit zurückzukehren. Parallel dazu verfolgt der Roman das Leben von Judith, die in England in einer jüdischen Familie aufwächst und immer wieder mit dieser Identität zu kämpfen hat. Beide Figuren begegnen sich später in London und verlieben sich. Dabei entstehen Konflikte und Herausforderungen aufgrund ihrer beiden Nationalitäten.

Das Grundgerüst des Buches hat mich sehr angesprochen. Meine Hoffnung war, intensiv in die Wahrnehmung und Perspektive von Palästinenser sowie Juden einzutauchen und den Nahost-Konflikt durch ihre Augen zu sehen, da ich selbst nur wenig Vorwissen zu dieser Thematik habe. Der Ansatz war da, die Umsetzung ist meiner Meinung nach leider nicht zu 100% gelungen.

Auch der Einstieg zieht sich sehr. Vor allem die ersten hundert Seiten waren wirklich zäh - das Aufeinandertreffen der Hauptfiguren lässt beispielsweise lange auf sich warten. Ab dem Moment ihres Kennenlernens folgen häufig große Zeitsprünge, die meinen Lesefluss gestört haben. Insgesamt hätte ich mir etwas mehr Stringenz in der Erzählform gewünscht.

Zudem streift die Autorin (nach meinem Empfinden) den Nahost-Konflikt an vielen Stellen nur und geht nicht ausreichend in die Tiefe. Dennoch war es spannend in die verschiedenen Kulturen einzutauchen und manche Konflikte dadurch besser nachvollziehen zu können. Besonders berührt hat mich dieses Zitat:

"Ich bin ein Mensch, du bist ein Mensch. Warum sollte ich dich hassen, ohne dich zu kennen?"

This is all about the origins of our individual suffering, and how those seeds plantes in our youth often grow into destructive forces in our adult lives. I loved this book’s empathy. I’m also happy to have a foil to Exodus, which i read last fall, and know only shares one side of the story. Like the characters in this book, we can choose to focus on how we’ve been wronged or we can focus on what we have that brings us joy. The only thing I’d critique is Jude’s level of selfless perfection was maybe slightly unrealistic.

Review: Ishmael’s Oranges by Claire Hajaj. 3.5★'s

I was captivated by the author’s writing and the emotions she described throughout the story. The author’s storytelling of a journey of two separate cultures, and family history, heritages and their struggles to find their own self as an individual hangs in the air. It’s an emotional journey of finding a true home and peace in oneself, regardless of the define histories and identities in a part of the world that has been badgered with conflict for generations.

The story’s main character, Salim, is introduced in the beginning as a young boy in the city of Jaffa and the reader follows his path throughout his life. Judit is also introduced in earlier chapters and we learn about her family history and heritage. The union between these two characters is both compelling and heartbreaking.

The weakening of the two families, and two cultures in opposition, only brought on hostility. Through the years a slow aching tragedy builds from a marriage of two young people, one Palestinian the other Jewish. The couple and their children are gradually ripped apart by loyalty and bloodline and they were at a crossing point for their future.
Salim, who was educated in London, wants to return to the land of his birth and continue with the family business running an orange grove. Marc, their son of mixed cultures rejects the Palestinian ways and wants to become a dancer. Judit is unable to convince her husband of his obligation to raise a multi-cultural family in harmony. You can feel all the emotions that this story brings to the reader….

Das Buch ist super spannend und fesselnd, erzählt aus beiden Perspektiven und bleibt nicht zu lange an einer Stelle stecken. Ich wollte gar nicht aufhören weiterzulesen, da ich das Ende wirklich gar nicht erahnen konnte. Normalerweise hätte ich dem Buch 5 Sterne gegeben, aber das Ende mochte ich leider überhaupt nicht.
