Orange boards are in very good condition, slight edge wear and sunning of spine. Internally nice and clean. Lacks dust jacket. A very good, solid copy. All of our books are individually inspected and described. Never ex-library unless explicitly described as such.

A classic study of the examination system in Ming and Qing China. Ho Ping-ti shows that the examination system in the Ming and Qing, using Confucian ideas, was a path for ambitious and hardworking men to climb the social hierarchy.

Since China did not have primogeniture, but rather divided inheritances equally amongst the sons, there was no focus to an aristocracy and the Chinese clan declined over time.

Ping-ti Ho draws very, very well-developed points to Confucian thoughts' role in Chinese history. Confucian influences on business activity and social stratification, among other things, have helped me immensely in class. (this was godsend to me at the University library)
