Perdition

Rate this book
After the death of her stepfather, Michaela Reilly’s family picks up and moves from the bustling city of Miami to a tiny speck of a town in the middle of nowhere Georgia. Starting over is always hard, but when you’re stuck with an emotionally wrecked mother who won’t even look at you and the responsibility of practically raising your younger brother and sister, it’s even more difficult.

Life in a small, rural town is a lot different from what she’s used to. Beaches are replaced with lazy, shaded rivers. Six lane highways with dirt roads. And Levi, the cute preacher’s son, with intentions as pure as his smile, takes the place of a string of shallow, meaningless hookups back home. Some things remain the same no matter where you go, however. Like the way a cute boy can make things seem not so bad, or how when you fall in love—You. Just. Know.

It's too bad it’s not only the good things that are universal. Bad things can follow you, no matter how far away from them you run. Secrets always end up hurting people. A troubled past will come back to haunt you. Michaela has both.

Thanks to Netgalley and respective publisher.

Love it. Wonderful ! !
"The Past always come back to haunt you"

The best way to live, is live with your present.
As Life is like chess game, you need to focus on remaining piece of yours and would try to make a correct move.
This book certainly remained you of your initial patch-ups.
And The girl of book, had reminded me of someone.
My god, I'd know how to cope when things went wrong.

I heard one saying-" Every saint has past,Every sinner has future ."

Well, I shouldn't tell you about storyline as it is still new and fresh YA.
But, I think all the girls around there would give 5 rating.
Exceptional writing and gratitude endlessly flowing in every chapter.
I would give my wishes to writer, for such glorious version YOUNG ADULT.

"I didn’t dare try to move, though. I’d wanted to be kissed,....
but somehow, Levi Johnson had beaten me at my own game.
I’d never been kissed
so intensely, so thoroughly before,
and I didn’t know what to think."

I hope you all love Michaela's story. She's not perfect, but I feel like there's a little bit of everyone hidden inside her complicated personality. <3

This was a really cute romance. Levi was a gentleman and then some. He was the preacher's son and town quarterback so I was expecting the typical good boy jock, but he shocked me with his actions, in a good way.
I had my ups and downs with Michaela, the main character. I liked her sass. She wouldn't let people's stares and opinions get to her, instead, chucking her chin up and smirking at them.
But then secretly, she let these same people's opinions affect so many aspects of her life and she, too often, found herself lacking.
The main drama in the story, I felt, dragged on way too long. It wasn't that much of an issue to me, but that's just me.
I did like following the friendships that Michaela formed throughout the book and even seeing the cycle of her and her mom's relationship and that way that turned out.
The ending upset me honestly. It seemed abrupt and I was left like 😒😒 wtf???

I really enjoyed the way that Lindsey Ouimet drew us into the feeling of small town life in rural Georgia. I could smell the grease in the air at Carmen's as Michaela worked there, feel the oppressive Georgia heat, and picture the crowd at the football games. I really felt Michaela's struggles and was torn right along side her over what to do.

I really enjoyed the talks with Michaela and Levi. Michaela and her siblings. I liked how Michaela and her mother were able to resolve things at the end.

Perdition is wrenching in the best possible way. Michaela and Levi are both so heartbreakingly real, so perfectly teenage, that you love them and get frustrated with them in exactly the right amounts. Michaela in particular stands out as a protagonist (carrying so much emotional luggage you just want to wrap her in a blanket and give her a hug) who can be challenging but in a very understandable, very realistic way. You fully understand why Levi falls for her and you're always rooting for her (and him, but mostly her).

This is the second book by this author, and I really hope she keeps writing YA because she always keeps me wanting more.

Adjusting to rural, small town life in a completely unfamiliar environment, with some baggage to boot - from the outset, you know that protagonist Michaela isn't in for an easy ride.

While I have no personal experience of the small town life that is central to this story, the author conveys the image and feeling of it so well you can picture it, and its inhabitants, very clearly in your head. I enjoyed the supporting cast - Michaela's siblings, Ethan, Evie (and even though he wasn't 'there', I really liked the bond that was so evident between Michaela and Jeremy) - almost as much as Michaela and Levi themselves. And while there was obviously a lot that she had to work through in terms of the past she carried with her from Florida, by the end you could see the gradual progression Michaela had gone through...though I do wish she'd been able to get to a place where she could have been completely honest with Levi earlier.

Speaking of Levi...he had more depth to him than I could have hoped for as the love interest; facets that showed him to be more than just the small town hero everyone looked up at him to be.

I think that, for me, the ending felt slightly rushed. When it reached the climax, I had to keep checking the % left to make sure I was actually reading it right, because I felt like there was so much more left to be said! . However, this didn't take away from the story, which I very much enjoyed.

A great follow up to 'What's a Soulmate?'!

I loved this book! I loved the characters, especially Levi and Michaela, and I found myself caring for them as if they were real friends. This is a young adult book that brings you back to high school- from the mean girls and gossip to the friends that you lost and friends that you gained to your first love.

I love the author's writing style and look forward to reading more of her books. I also agree with other reviewers- I'd love to see what happens after this story or see a sequel with Ethan or Evie as a main character.

Let me start by saying that I've now read this book twice and I even cried the second time. I love small-town stories and this one is the classic trope of the new girl trying to fit in to her new high school. Of course, there's the dreamy Levi, almost (but not quite) too good to be true. Such a great character. And Michaela with the ghosts from her past catching up to her and threatening her chance at happiness. Seems like everything and everyone conspires to rob her of happiness, including her own mother. But Levi's steadfastness is inspirational. I won't ruin by telling more but just read this, you'll be glad you did.

I won't lie-- I love Lindsey Ouimet's writing. It's always riveting and appropriately illustrative. She is an author who respects her audience and trusts them to understand her text and the characters and to make decisions about the characters on their own.

Michaela's story is a difficult one. I respect how difficult her relationship is with her family, particularly after moving to a small town. Her experiences, and Levi's, are heartbreaking. I've always grown up and lived in the suburbs, so I cannot relate to whether their experiences are real small-town experiences. Perhaps they are? The supporting cast is diverse but fairly flat and stereotypical. I struggled the most with how everyone seemed to treat our protagonists. Is this really how small-town life is?!

The ending left me wanting, and at first I walked away thinking about how this might be a 3-star read. But I found myself thinking about the experiences Michaela went through for days after finishing this book. A 4-star experience purely for keeping me thinking!

I look forward to reading more of Ouimet's books in the future!

I want to start with what I really enjoyed from this story: I loved Levi. Who wouldn't? His kindness, consideration, patience, and willingness to see the good in others is amazing. I wish he was real because knowing someone like him would make the world seem a little less depressing. The way he treats Michaela and is willing to listen and hear her is beautiful.

The author did a wonderful job of painting a character who is so beautiful on the inside, that occasionally -- remember I'm saying "occasionally" here! -- you forget what he even looks like. You're very focused on the actions of the character, and that's such an empowering feeling for the reader. When you are so involved in the character and how they act; it's the coolest gift an author can give you. Kudos!

I appreciated Michaela's character, her frankness, her care of her siblings, and her background. I liked the passages where she shared memories of her father. The whole memory of her father giving her the tattoo was so sweet. I could feel the connection they had.

I loved how she was able to resolve things with her mother toward the end of the book. I love that her mother was willing to move for her. I know it's never a great idea to "run from your problems", but I feel as if they had to make the best choice for themselves. Also, when you're living in a place where people are judgemental and openly so, I don't think anyone would feel comfortable staying in such a place. Sometimes the best solution is to walk away from a situation even if you feel as if you are giving up. No one can know what you've been through or what you're going through. So, you have to make the best decisions for yourself that you can under the circumstances.

I really liked Chloe and Lucas. They were adorable, and I think it would have been nice if a little more interaction with them had been included in the book. I think the background story they shared was a powerful part, and it was important to see how it affected them all.

I loved Evie and Ethan! I would have really liked to learn more about them and hope they will have a book of their own in the future. They were supportive and caring characters, and I think the book was even better with them.

I loved the author's use of language and the way she used imagery. I loved the interactions with the Levi and Michaela as well as Michaela's relationship with Ethan and Evie.

I liked the ending. I think it brought everything full-circle. I appreciated how it wasn't rushed, and it was sweet how they met again. It was lovely to know they would get a second chance and the knowledge they loved each other still. I'm happy they will have the opportunity to be together.

As a reader, there were a few things that bothered me and made it hard to really enjoy the story to its fullest extent. These things got in the way of me fully sinking into the story, and it also resulted in the overall rating. The following are just my opinions but are issues I struggled with as I read.

One of the things that really bothered me was the endless paragraphs. There was so much narrative text, and I wished it had been broken up a little more with dialogue and action or even a flashback where the conversation took place. It felt as if there was too much being said at one time. I appreciated what the author had to share, but I don't care for an information dump. I feel some of it could have been weeded out or broken up appropriately and still been effective.

The editing issues were difficult as well. I know not everyone cares, and I can handle a few, but there was quite a bit. It was distracting. Part of the problem is I was a teacher, and I'm a freelance editor, so that part of me is very pronounced. Unfortunately, for me, it decreases my ability to enjoy a story to its fullest. I'm sorry.

The next issue was how these people just automatically hated Michaela. It seemed like a large portion of the town just decided to outcast her. I don't live in a small town, so I'm sure my lack of background has something to do with how weird this seemed to me, but I would hope most people wouldn't act like that. I was very saddened by Lissa's immediate dislike of Michaela and how she set out to bully her.

Which, bullying is a huge issue, and I felt like that wasn't really dealt with before the conclusion of the story. I know Michaela ended up leaving, but it bothered me that Lissa wasn't held more accountable for cyber-bullying with Olivia. I wish someone would have told an adult. Maybe Evie? I just wanted to see some sort of concrete resolution, even though I know there isn't always one, but those girls shouldn't have been allowed to get away with what they were doing.

Overall, I did enjoy this story. I loved the characters. I loved the relationships Michaela built. I loved the plot itself. The romance was sweet. I would recommend this story to others looking for a new summer read. Because of some of the content, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending this book to young audiences. I know it's marketed as a YA/Teen story (I also noticed it lists the book under "dating & sex" and "contemporary" so I'm not overlooking those!), but it holds some heavy topics and language that I'm not sure is appropriate for young ages. That's just my opinion though.

Thank you to the writer, Lindsey Ouimet, for the opportunity to read and give a fair review of her book in exchange for a free copy. I appreciated the chance to read a story that showcases a talented author's writing. I am definitely going to give her other books a try. Thanks!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I seriously don't even know where to begin. Perdition has completely wrecked me in the best possible way.

I enjoyed Perdition way more than I thought I would. Though I have to admit, I kind of went back and forth before I submitted a request to review because the synopsis didn't outright appeal to me. Good thing I trusted my weakness for romance novels because I got way more than I ever expected. The story, characters and writing slowly captured my heart and by the end, I was absolutely head over heels in love with this book.

The romance is sweet and endearing, but also so heartbreaking, real, and beautiful. Michaela and Levi are such great characters you can’t help but fall for them as they are and root for them as a couple. The drama is enough to last you for days, but also quite realistic that you can imagine yourself in at least one situation. The humor sprinkled throughout is so perfectly timed to lighten up the mood just when you needed it. And the FEELS... I can't get over them. I'm such an emotional wreck right now, but it the good kind of way. Lindsey Ouimet's writing just has this amazing way that makes you feel just as the characters do... as if you're part of the story going through all the same pain, hurt, anger, happiness, and love.

Perdition will definitely one of those stories that I'll reread time and time again. There's plenty of swooning, laughter, drama, angst, and even some tears. Okay okay... there's actually a lot of tears. I'm such a big cry baby sometimes... but honestly, it's been while since a book got me so worked up and my emotions all over the place. My heart ached so much for the characters, especially for Michaela and Levi. I actually had to stop reading here and there during the last few chapters because I was ugly crying and could not even see the words on my Ipad. And when I got to the end... I was left utterly heartbroken because as bittersweet as the ending was, I wish there was just more.

If you’re looking for a YA Romance that will make you laugh and cry, teach you a lesson or two, and remind you that in life, when bad things happen (and they will and there will be a lot), better things will come along... then you absolutely have to read this book ASAP.

Huge thanks to Lindsey Ouimet for sending me a copy and writing this wonderful story.

***NOTE SPOILERS AHEAD***

This is a solid four-star from me. While there is a lot of good, there are some places where the narrative fell down and I felt cheated or annoyed. We'll get to that. Overall this is a strong young adult romance that beautifully captures the realities of small town southern life. I could practically taste the sweet tea and barbecue. The book is filled with characters that feel real and have distinct voices.

The place where the narrative fell flat was in two distinct parts. The first was in the choice of antagonist... or rather antagonists. I get women often take down other women but the trifecta of Michaela's mother, Lissa/Olivia, and Levi's Mother was a bit too much. Two would have been plenty, three was overkill. There's a certain point where the reading becomes very uncomfortable especially if anyone has ever been bullied. I really hope Michaela got some therapy afterward because what happens is the kind of thing that leaves scars. I did appreciate the realism in that none of the bullies got a comeuppance. They win. They get what they want, to make Michaela suffer and drive her from the town. But if you don't like that kind of resolution or moral (aka it's okay to run away from your problems) then that can stick in your craw. The other place the narrative fell was the ending, the epilogue felt rushed and it didn't make logical sense. Yes it leads to a hopeful ending, but there might be a better way to do that. I also didn't like the fact that Michaela changed herself and lost a lot of what made her a joy to read. She gave in to the slut shaming and perpetuated the myth that good girls don't wear clothing that shows skin. I was disappointed with the end. Not enough to knock it down another star, but enough that I couldn't give it five.

There is good. Real good here. I liked many of the side characters, Evie, Chloe, Ethan all of them were interesting and it was refreshing to have a love story, especially a YA love story, utterly devoid of a love triangle. The language was beautiful and the way the scene is painted is lovely.

Ultimately I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Losing a loved one can be especially hard. After Michaela Reilly’s step-father passes away, her mother packs up Michaela and her two younger siblings and moves from the city life they have grown up in to a small Georgia town located in the middle of no-where. Michaela has the chance to leave her horrible past behind her and start again.

Small town life is far from what Michaela is used to. Everything is miles from most civilization and everyone is quick to judge the new-comers, everyone except for Levi Johnson, the preacher's son that is. Levi and Michaela's attraction towards each other is undeniable. As they begin spending time together and grow closer, Michaela realizes that Levi is unlike the other boys she is used to who only want to get into her pants. Levi shows true love and affection and doesn't let the rest of the town's stereotypical thoughts ruin his chance to truly get to know Michaela like no-one has before.

When things begin to fall into place for Michaela, her haunted past starts catching up and one of the town's most popular girls, Lissa Whitmire, is set to destroy her. Will the secrets and people from Michaela's past ruin what she has worked so hard to leave behind? Or will she be able to overcome them and become the girl that Levi deserves?

First, thank you Lindsey Ouimet for allowing me to read an ARC in exchange for my honest review. "Perdition" was easy for me to relate to as I grew up in a smaller town where everyone knows everyone. When someone new moves to the area, everyone wants to know all about their past and who they are, which makes it easy for me to understand the struggles and adjustments that Michaela was going through.

I loved the dynamics between the characters, especially Levi and Michaela. The way that Lindsey Ouimet portrayed their emotions was easy to understand and relate to. A very heart-warming story about how you can love someone despite the mistakes they have made and truly love a person for who they are.

I would have liked the last two chapters to include a little more and add to the story. Perhaps there is a second book in the works which is why the author left them a little vague? I would have also liked to learn a little more about the tension between Lissa and Micheala. I feel as though there weren't enough details explaining the reason for their feuding.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading "Perdition" and cannot wait to read more of Lindsey Ouimet's work!

What a journey this book takes you on! I couldn't put it down until I got to the end. And by time I got to the end I had a pretty ugly cry mixed in there. Where to even start Michaela is a lost teenager who had just lost her dad, best friend, and in a way her mom who was uprooted from Miami and moved to a teeny tiny town in Georgia. Like most small towns gossip spreads, opinions no mater if they are true or not are formed, and life isn't really the easy ride. While dealing with the move, her moms emotional break down, accusations on her personality, practically raising her siblings she meets Levi Johnson. Levi is the golden boy in the town the preachers son, quarterback, the friendly face that is willing to lend a helping hand. With just some eye contact they seem to seek each other out and can't help but to fall in love despite how hard she fights it. Her life has been a mess why wouldn't she think it's her she ruins everything she touches so emotionally we watch her be on a rollercoaster. Levi's mom and others in town do all they can to try and convince her to stay away or for him to stay away because she is no good. And then one day it all falls down like a house of cards no matter how hard the two of them fight for each other. There is a little bit of current issues that are presented in this book that more teens should be able to know they aren't alone and I think the messages there on the pages could help somebody speak up. Highly recommend this to anybody I think it can be enjoyed by many ages! Would love to see a sequel though because the end kinda left me want a lot more of Michaela and Levi just saying!

The book started out great, Michaela was far from perfect, she had her flaws and she owned them, which I liked. I was interested to learn her backstory and find out why she was the way she was. As the book went on, we see that Michaela is actually lost, she doesn’t have a clue who she is and it got a bit annoying that she was just acting up to the ideas that everyone else had about her.
I adore Lindsey Ouimet’s writing style, I find it very entertaining. The story was nicely paced but I found some parts to be rather boring, i’d have liked them to have a bit more substance. The characters may have been textbook YA but they still managed to be likeable so it didn’t bother me too much. The sheer volume of slut shaming was tiresome, I could’ve done without it, it didn’t add anything for me. I get it, the mean girls are mean but couldn’t they have been bitchy in another way?
Overall, this is an author with amazing potential and while this story may have fell flat in places and the ending needed to be more fleshed out, it was still an enjoyable read. I look forward to checking out more of Lindsey’s books in the future.

This isn't my normal type of book, but I decided to give it a try. It was a good book. I went into this more than a little skeptical on what I would be reading, and by the time it was done I found myself thinking I was glad I'd given it a chance. Michaela is a City girl with more than a little bit of trouble in her past, and Levi is the Preachers son. It sounds like the cliche story line, and you're probably right. Except in THIS story, the Preacher's son isn't trying to escape his title, and the notorious vixen just wants to be a better person. She just wants to take care of her siblings, go to work, and have her mom be a mom again. But circumstances aren't always what they should be, and choices made aren't always the best ones. I have to say that even if the only books you normally read are supernatural thrillers (like me usually), take a step outside your comfort zone and enjoy a walk in Southern Georgia with Michaela and Levi, old Judgy Christian women, gossipy rumor spreading jealous teenagers, bonfires, and secrets and lies.

It was hard to swallow the lump in one's throat in certain places in Perdition. There were places that legit made me want to cry--Michaela talking about her beloved late stepfather, her way with her younger siblings, and describing her feelings for Levi. Levi, of course, is the perfect boy, who exists more in one's fantasies than in reality. I found Ethan to be the most interesting character, and I wanted to know more about his story and how things turned out with his girlfriend. I also really wanted to know more about Lissa's motivation--sometimes she seemed a bit one-dimensional. The hardest person to get a bead on was Michaela herself, I think. I never was quite sure what exactly was her deal beyond trying to move past her "image." Aside from that, I truly enjoyed this book. It's filled with some wonderful moments and profound statements. Lindsey Ouimet is an excellent writer, and she paints pictures of small town life remarkably well. I'm looking forward to reading more!

I read this in one gulp - it was like I was looking in a mirror back at my own youth. The author has caught the angst of a "not-so-good-girl" trying to make sense out of her life, and against the odds. I loved Michaela's character - she was a great heroine. She's tough, she's fragile, and she's got a lot of baggage for her young age. Her heart is still broken after losing her beloved stepfather. She's trying to help her younger brother and sister cope, and meanwhile her mother has fallen apart. Michaela is definitely the strong one in the family. They move into a new town - it's a chance to start over, make something good of her life - but the past has ways of coming back to haunt you. I won't spoil it - but I'll just say, if you, like me, like reading about a wild child with a heart of gold, read this book. It's terrific.

I love Levi. What a perfect book boyfriend this guy is. Like, almost too perfect, because I found myself waiting for the character twist about him that never came, because he simply is amazing. Which I guess helps in the contrast against Michaela, a problematic fave who wasn't actually problematic at all, if you know what I mean. All the stereotypes and judgments people threw at her wasn't her fault, which makes her a good-bad girl. She just found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, is all.

Anyway. I enjoyed this story for all it's sweetness and small-town charm. The writing is excellent and fluid, if a bit too wordy at times (long paragraphs don't bother me in general, but my attention span's been short of late). The ending was a bit abrupt though, and I'd love for an epilogue at some point. Or just more Levi, to be honest.

In many ways, Perdition is a book about learning how to be yourself and how to find your way in the world. It's also about first love and learning how to trust.

There are many things that are admirable about this novel. Michaela's journey is one worth telling, and Levi is a sweet, trusting, and patient LI. This is definitely a sappy love story, and I think the readers will fall in love as quickly as they do. Michaela and Levi hit it off immediately and Levi is great because he likes Michaela just as she is.

Unfortunately, this one just wasn't for me. There were some plot points that were hard to overlook. I was also disappointed with the last quarter or so of the book and the ending was unsatisfying.

I did like this, Michaela was a cool character, it was just at times she seemed a bit TOO woe-is-me and self-pitying and melodramatic... girl, no good comes of keeping secrets, just tell Levi all that went down! I liked the small town setting and Evie was an awesome new bff as well.

Thank you to the author for this reviewer's copy for my honest opinion on the book.

I loved this book! She nailed the way a small town is and how people act amongst each other. Being from a small town I could totally see my high school throughout this book. The love story between Michaela and Levi was fantastic. I could not get enough of them! This book gave me every emotion in the world. I was so angry the way some people treated Michaela without even knowing her. There were many times where I was crying and just so wrapped up in the story. I love the way that she ended the book and I want so much more of their story! I cannot get enough of them.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Guys, this book is simply great. As a girl who moved to a small, rural town from a much larger, urban area when she was a teen, I totally appreciated so many elements in a way that only someone who has been in those shoes can. Michaela basically is going through culture shock at the beginning of this book, and I remember that feeling like it was yesterday, even though it's been about 10 years.

Perdition offers everything: romance, drama, that "small town" feeling, you name it. Lindsey Ouimet really nailed what it feels like to try and navigate a small town when you're the outsider. Not to mention the fact that she wrote one hell of an adorable romance. I was totally rooting for Michaela and her love interest to have a happy ending.

Perdition made me laugh, made me cry, and definitely made me think "oh god, same" about fourteen million different times. If you're looking for a good summer read, look no further. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I was given the book in exchange for and honesty review.
Perdition was a very interesting read. The main characters were able to have a very strong and fast connection. In the beginning I was a little doubtful about it but the more i read the more i loved it. I was able to understand how strongly they felt about each other. I wont lie i was a little shock at the ending and it kinda left me wanting more of their story. I want to thank the author for letting me have this amazing opportunity. I really enjoyed it.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

Perdition by Lindsey Ouimet follows this teenage girl, Michaela, and her family moving from a big city to a very small rural town in the south and handling the death of her stepfather.
This book was beautiful, it deals a lot with grief and how running from things doesn't make them go away necessarily.
I loved the romance in this book, it was sweet and the connection between the two was fantastic.
This was a very sweet and heart tugging summer read, and I definitely recommend it!
I can't wait to read more by Lindsey Ouimet!

I read this book in less than 2 days. If that doesn't tell you how good it was, idk how else will. I was drawn into this book from the beginning... and all the way through the book there were a couple characters I hated, and one specifically I hated the most, especially after her comment at the end. I wasn't super crazy about how it ended though. it really left it open ended and unfinished. I really hope there will be a sequel in this story.

I received a copy from the author.

I loved this book. This is probably because I'm a sucker for romances, but that's okay. I love Levi! He brought such a warm feeling to the story. He was such a sweetheart.

I really liked the way that the romance developed, it felt natural. I enjoyed the way Levi interacted with the main characters brother and sister, it was adorable.

I just wish that we could find out what happened to Lissa. She should have some punishment for what she did.

Perdition by Lindsey Ouimet was a beautiful story of grief, acceptance, guilt, and first love. I wanted to throttle Michaela at times, but found her reactions to be realistic and understandable. Levi was perfect without being TOO perfect, and I appreciated that he wasn't used as a "quick fix" for Michaela's problems.

I hope there's a sequel! That ending!
