Adopted: An Adoptee's Memoir of Healing Love

Rate this book
“I thought I’d be dead by 21”

Great pain produces character. It can just as easily produce fear, rejection, and self-loathing.

My early life produced in me a fear that I’d be dead by 21. This personal narrative is my memory of a lifelong search for love, belonging, and a sense of place. Walk with me on my journey through abandonment, panic attacks, fear, rejection, bullying, and unbelief, out into the blinding light of healing love.

Adopted touches on the issues nearly every child or adult adoptee must face on the way to maturity, wholeness, and redemption. Along the way it provides valuable insights to adoptive and foster parents who long to see their children whole. And to adult adoptees who wonder why they do what they do and how healing can be the next chapter in their life story.

Although rooted in David's experience as foster child and then adoptee, his book speaks to universal themes of belonging, acceptance, and place, making it relevant to everyone, whether or not adoption is a part of your story or not. I picked it up and read it cover to cover in less than 48 hours. It's an engaging, life-giving story.

I highly recommend this book -- it frankly and compellingly covers a man's journey from an early childhood of abandonment through his discovery of Jesus as a young boy and then as a young man. It then covers his journey through adulthood. It is a fascinating read. No matter your gender, background or beliefs, this book will affect you. I could not put it down.

An inspiring and poignant memoir with a message of love, acceptance, reconciliation, and forgiveness that all of us seek. We all suffer brokenness. David Alves' story lifted me as it pointed me further along a healing path.

I had a chance to read this in the early stages of publication, and it was a wonderful story of healing and love. Just so happens it was written by my Uncle David. I loved reading about his journey.
