» Review for The Heartstone Thief by Pippa DaCosta «

Actual rating: 15 stars. More or less.

Note to self: no fangirling. No fangirling. No fangirling.

So. As you might have heard through the shrimpvine, I didn't like this book at all. But being the kind-hearted soul that I am, I am going to pretend I slightly loved it. Because Pippa DaCosta, despite completely lacking talent in the writing department, is kinda sorta nice. So I figure I kind of owe it to her to give one of her books a high rating for once. Besides, being charitable once in a while is probably good for my subaquatic karma. One fake news fangirling review coming right up!

Okay, you know what this book reminded me of? The prehistoric adventure movies I used to watch, back in the days when I was a baby shrimp. You know, those Movies of the Gloriously Glorious Posters with Inbuilt Exclamation Marks (MotGGPwIEM™)?

If you've never heard of this movie and/or have no shrimping idea who the hot dude on the poster is, you deserve to die. Just so you know.

Action! Adventure! Excitement! Romance! Dashing hero! Feisty heroine! This is what this book is about! Only that this is Pippa DaCosta! Which means that the dashing hero is a deliciously sneaky thieving rascal/anti hero with a slightly screwed up past and enough demons in his yummy little head to fill a couple of levels of Hell! And the feisty heroine is a scrumptiously somewhat bipolar non-princess/assassin/sorceress/who-the-fish-knows with homicidal maniac tendencies! Who likes to cut cut cut and slice slice slice through everyone her enemies! And then there's magical stuff! And supremely sexy delectably embedded gems! And yucky, villainous villains! And daggers! And whorehouses and devious almost everyone and ancient ruins and relics and antique beasts rawrrrr and not-so-good-non-doggies and trepidation and intrigue and great banter and twists and no HEA and no HEA! And stuff! And it's all pretty marvelicious! And I think I've caught the Deadly Exclamation Mark Disease (DEMD™)! Must be an effect of my NOT unleashing my inner hysterical teenage fangirl! I'm not sure I can stop! Please someone! Anyone! Do something! Now! Come on, my Little Barnacles! Call 1-800-Save-My-Dark-Exoskeleton-Clad-Overlord or something!

[A message from Goodreads Support]
We are very sorry to interrupt this most fascinating non-review in such a shameful manner, but the nefarious breeder of all things shrimpy known as Sarah is momentarily indisposed. She unexpectedly went into cardiac arrest for some unknown reason named Pippa DaCosta. She is currently being brought back to life by one of her sex slaves harem guests, and should be back shortly. You're welcome.
[End of message from Goodreads Support]

So, where was I? Oh yes, the moderately awesome MCs . First, let's get something out of the way real quick: delicious sneaky slightly screwed up thief of a dashing non-hero = Curtis = Poof! Gone! Harem! So glad we cleared that up. So. MY Curtis, aka "Thief." YUM. Curtis is disgustingly youngish. And he awakens the cougar in me in the most beautifully wicked, evil way. YUM. I am pretty sure what I feel for him is superbly illegal in some countries. YUM. Our Shrimpy Lord knows my Yummy Thief can be exquisitely exasperatingly harebrained sometimes, and that he has a delightful knack for ruining the mostest perfectest of moments, but I am afraid it cannot be helped, I am in luuuuuurrrrve.

Now for our utmostly appetizing somewhat bipolar homicidal freak of a feisty lovely heroine. First, let's get something out of the way real quick: Her Batshit Crazy Princessness/Haughtishness/Cutthroatishness = Shaianna = Poof! Gone! Harem! So glad we cleared that up. So. MY Shaianna. So enchantingly slaughterish. So charmingly enigmatic. So endearingly sorcerish. So adorably cryptic. So rapturously murderous mysterious. So ineffably ineffable. So gorgeously spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler. And so incredibly spoiler spoiler spoiler, too. I am SO in luuuuuurrrrve.

Sorry, what? You want to know about the story? Why of course, my Tiny Arthropods, of course. Let's see, the story starts out as a most excitingly awesome adventure, complete with, you know, most excitingly awesome adventurous (if slightly magical and mortiferous and otherworldly and lethal) stuff. And then it evolves into a oh-wow-spoiler-spoiler-spoiler-bloody-shrimping-hell-spoiler-spoiler-spoiler-you-have-got-to-be-shrimping-me spoiler-spoiler-spoiler Roller Coaster Ordeal of An Adventure A La Pippa DaCosta (RCOoaAALPDC™). Which loosely translates to: hold on to your knickers, my Lovely Decapods, this ain't no fluffy stroll in the park with the Care Bears of doom and destruction!

Non Hysterical Teenage Fangirling Mission (NHTFM™) accomplished. I rest my case. Temporarily.

» And the moral of this I Wish I Could Tell You More about this Book but Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Plus I'm Getting a Bit Ravenous And Need to Go Slaughter Things Crappy Non Fangirling Review (IWICTYMatBbSSSPIGaBRANtGSTCNFR™) is: hellish bloody shrimp, Pippa DaCosta, is there anything you cannot write?! Fantasy, UF, SF, non-despicable NA about the silly fae...Next thing you know you'll have me raving like a lunatic maniac about a non stupidly stupid Historical Romance! And that would be pretty disgusting, if you ask me.

P.S. There is a slight possibility that this might possibly be the start of a new series. Maybe. Perhaps. That's what my nefarious pinky toe told me, anyway.
P.P.S. Rawwwrrrr, I tell you!!!!! Rawwwrrrr!!!!

Review for The Heartstone Thief by Pippa DaCosta.

5 Fantastic Stars! Ms DaCosta has outdone herself with her latest book, The Heartstone Thief. From the secrets hidden in the ancient tombs, to the supposed myth of a long forgotten war that destroyed a civilization, to the truth behind the forbidden magic of the Inner Circle and to the mysterious sorceress who is keeping dark secrets, I became immersed in this incredible fantasy world from start to finish. It is heart-breaking, gripping and unpredictable and totally addictive.

Curtis Vance’s self-serving life went from thieving, drinking and womanising to monsters, magic and endless trouble the moment he stumbles across a sorceress on his way home one night.

She was trouble. It was in her eyes, in the blood on her blade, and in the way she stood stone still. Everything about her had my instincts clawing to get away.

Vance just wants to return to his thieving existence, but the sorceress has bound herself to him, and they cannot be separated unless they find the Dragon Eye gem. But Vance is not the only one after the Dragon Eye and there is so much more to the sorceress and the Dragon Eye than he knows.

From the moment Shaianna appeared in the alley, my world had become a whirl of magic, truths, regrets, and lies. Mine, and may be hers. I'd heard her voice in my mind and felt the elated rush as she killed. My gut told me none of this was right and neither was she. But it didn't have to be right. I just needed the valuable Eye.

I can’t stop gushing about this amazing book – Ms DaCosta is a masterful storyteller. She creates intriguing and engaging characters, in a well-crafted interwoven plot with revelations that literally had me gasping, and what a jaw-dropping ending!

Sometimes you look so hard for things to steal that you miss those things that are freely given.

The Heartstone Thief is an action-packed, thrilling fantasy of heroism, love and betrayal which I cannot recommend highly enough. And what an absolutely gorgeous cover!

I'm still working my way through this book, so this review is for Ms Pippa DaCosta's Heartstone Thief:

This is not the first rabbit hole I have followed Ms DaCosta down. I have laughed and cried through the Veil series (Team Akil all the way), through the follow-up Chaos Rises series (too short!), from the space operatic series 1000 Revolution to the underground city with the London Fae, all the way to Egypt with the Soul Eater. I have loved each and every series, and can honestly say that this is yet another stellar series-in-the-making.

From our first meeting of the Thief and the Sorceress until the conclusion, I was gripped, entertained and on the edge of my seat to find out what happened next. There was heartbreak, betrayal, and renewal, and frankly, I hope the next book comes super fast because I want to know MORE!

Whilst I received an ARC in return for an honest review, I have also purchased the Legends of the Damned boxset. So much goodness in one book!

The Heartstone Thief by Pippa DaCosta - 5 stars
Read April 2017

Pippa DaCosta has done it again! A new world, a fabulously delicious anti-hero, an homicidal and slightly insane heroine and it all adds up to another book that you'll just want to get lost in!

There aren't many authors who can consistently come up with such exciting new worlds and series for their readers to play in but Pippa is one of the best. I'd kind of like to take a holiday inside her brain and go rooting around to see what else she has hiding in there! The Heartstone Thief is a fabulous story and one I'm really hoping is the start of a new series (please write more Pippa, please, please, please!). This is a world full of magic but not your nice wave-a-want-and-get-whatever-you-want magic, its a darker magic, one that demands a very high price. Be careful what you wish for because it might just come at a cost you weren't prepared to pay!

Curtis Vance is one messed up anti-hero with a dark and troubled past, he's a mercenary thief who doesn't think twice about taking from others as long as he's getting paid for his troubles. When he is approached by a mysterious sorceress he agrees to help her look for a hidden treasure but he completely ignores her warnings about the danger involved, after all there is no such thing as magic and the monsters she describes can't possibly exist. Well that was what he thought anyway, he plans to go along with her until he can steal her treasure out from under her nose but that backfires quite spectacularly when he finds himself caught up in something huge, something that could end up costing him everything.

I absolutely loved The Heartstone Thief, the characters are fantastic and full of surprises, the world is dark and twisted and its full of action and adventure. Pippa DaCosta takes us on a thrilling journey thats full of surprises and will leave you breathless. She definitely has another future hit on her hands with this one and I'm keeping everything crossed that she turns it into a series.

Damned If I do Erin Hayes
Well Hells Bells that's some story telling there. This author just about ripped me apart with this story. All of the energy and angst, the twisted plots. The love hate relationships and forbidden love. The energy and intensity is there from the start and when it gets to the part that I swear I stopped breathing. Well it ain't over yet because this is a trilogy and this is just book one but dang it what a way to start the series.

I am so loving Jude, and Carl was a blast I hope we get that from him again. But the betrayal cut deep. So where do we go from here? I have no idea but this author is showing her ability to weave a story and keep you invested in the outcome. I can't wait to see what happens next especially after that gripping ending.

This is a review of Pixi Poison by Katerina Martinez and Lee Dignam
I don't quite know what to say. This is very different from what we've seen so far of Ashwood, and yet it isn't. It has a strong heroine who's trying to stand on her own in a world that doesn't want to see her succeed, she has allies she doesn't realize she has, and she has enemies she doesn't see coming. So it's very much like the first three Ashwood novels. But it's even darker, grittier, and more brutal than those books. Even though the main characters are vampires and werewolves there's a very human sense of hope than runs under the whole story. And Pixi has a surprisingly humanitarian streak that's unexpected in a creature of the night.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this story.

"The Grave Winner" by Lindsey R. Loucks - 5 Stars
Holy cow, WOW! This is such a good book that as soon as I finished I immediately bought the other two in the trilogy because I have to learn what happens! The story is fast paced and intense and the magic interesting and horrible and so much is unfair about what's happening to Leigh especially that none of the other sorceresses or sorcerers have come forward to help or even teach her anything useful.... how the heck will this all end??

"Damned if I Do" by Erin Hayes - didn't read

"The Heartstone Thief" by Pippa Dacosta - 4 Stars
This was a really good book that sucked a bit because the happy ending held quite a bit of sadness as well. I don't want to give away anything, so that's all I'll say except that this was really well written with great characters and I definitely am going to check out this author's other work.

"Pixi Poison" by Lee Dignam & Katerina Martinez - didn't read

"Silencing the Siren" by J. E. Taylor - 3 Stars
I liked this book well enough, but it had some pretty dark moments and I wasn't really a fan of the twisted sex the two main characters engaged in. Don't really see myself reading the 2nd book in the series.

"Cursed" by Lucy Leroux - 3 Stars
This book was very well written and I would have purchased the next in the series, but it hasn't been written yet and none of the author's other works really jumped out at me - so hopefully she will write the next one soon... I very much enjoyed the magic side of things and the romance too. A little dark, but it still had sweetness and love

"Mysterium: The Oracle's Foretelling" by Simone Pond - didn't read

"The Seas of Time" by Jayne Faith - didn't read

"Taken" by Laxmi Hariharan - didn't read

"Eternal Night" by Jade Kerrion - didn't read

"Black Beauty" by Constance Burris - 3 Stars
This was an interesting book and I like that it has something I hadn't even realized isn't usually in fantasy - people of different ethnicities. Once I read this though, it had me mentally reviewing most of the covers of fantasy books and seeing white girl after white girl. Anyway, this is a prequel to a series which I'm not actually interested in reading, mostly because the people I'd actually like to learn about don't get talked about until the 2nd and 3rd books - sorry, but don't get me all involved in these people's lives and then make the first book be about people I could care less about, including one character who didn't show up until the last few pages of this book.

"Unleashed" by Debbie Cassidy - 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this book, especially the world the author has created. A slightly different type of invasion of earth since the invaders were originally from earth and just decided to come back and take over. I liked the tongue in cheekiness of the invaders having used up multiple planet's resources before deciding to return - seems we and they don't learn from the past... Besides that, I really enjoyed the romance which is really the focus of the story anyway - both the main characters are likable and the heat between them nice and steamy. Very much looking forward to the next book in this series!

"Valia's Villain" by Jocelyn Dex - 4 Stars
This was a short, fast, hot and steamy read with a nice little bit of story to go along. I enjoyed the different types of demons and what they could do and the two main characters worked nicely together - though Valia was pretty spoiled, the author was able to make her a bouncy, fun spoiled person instead of a whiny b*tch you wanted to smack. I kind of want to know what happens in the 3rd book in the series since it's about her brother Fin, but mostly I just want to know why a male Sempire is considered an abomination. I might eventually look into reading it...

"The Men Who Killed God" by J. Alex McCarthy - didn't read

"Hibernian Blood" by Dean F. Wilson" - 2 Stars
This was an okay read, but felt the main character came across very childish in a lot of ways and some things weren't really explained well enough Something that bothered me also is that he has to go through a series of tests to get a weapon that will focus his powers - none of the tests seemed to be about teaching him anything about his powers - just random bits of weirdness that he had to kind-of luck into conquering.

"Dawn of the Infected" by Eileen Cruz Coleman - 2 Stars
Eh... This was an okay read, but I really wasn't a fan of the main character, Selena. With her inner monologue she comes across as spoiled and kind of a jerk. Her hybrid protector is a bit more likable in that the lessons he tries to teach her are kind of snarky and show she's being an idiot, but it's totally unfathomable why the heck he seems to be attracted to her and so he loses cool points for that. The author's version of the apocalypse is different and interesting - if the main character hadn't been depicted as she was I would have continued on with the series... Others might not have the same problems with her that I did, so definitely give this prequel a chance.

"The Afterlife of Alyx & Israel" by Hanna Peach - 4 Stars
I really enjoyed this book, though the total defeatist attitude towards taking risks/loving life that Alyx had through most of the book was a bit hard to take at least she grows and learns from what she goes through. Even though this is book 6 in a series and it's obvious there's some history the author does a great job of providing enough info so I didn't feel lost. I don't think I'll look into the rest of the series, but I will definitely keep this author in mind and be interested in reading more by her if I come across anything. Characters you root for, some cool fighting scenes, and sweet romance...

"All the Pretty Ghosts" - by Jamie Campbell - didn't read

"Fallen Angel" by Jae Vogel - didn't read

"Skin Deep" by T. G. Ayer - 4 Stars
I enjoyed this story so much! Very well thought out world with lots of different things going on. And it's a very long book - I'm not used to fantasy type books like this being so meaty, but it's definitely a nice change (just hope they continue to be like this, sometimes an author starts out with nice thick books with plenty of story to fill it and then start shortening the books until they are half the original size) I'm hooked to find out what happens next and already started on the 2nd in the series.

"Love Bites" by Taryn Quinn - didn't read

So out of 21 books:
10 - didn't read
1 - 5 stars
5 - 4 stars
3 - 3 stars
2 - 2 stars

So I found 9 of them pretty decent reads, 2 of those I devoured the rest of the series that's been written and plan on continue to read what those authors put out. The reason I didn't read at least 3 of the books included is that they started off with a prologue that detailed how everything ended and then went back to the beginning of the story to tell how it all happened which happens to be a type of storytelling I hate. It's very likely that others won't have that issue and will enjoy those books and the others I found myself uninterested in after a chapter or two, so I highly recommend this collection - there's basically something for everyone and you won't be sorry you purchased it.

When I started this book it was to read a story by Pippa DaCosta. Her story was excellent and very interesting. I finished it in one sitting. I proceeded to read some of the other stories after I read a brief description of the story preceding it. I read about 66% of the book and to be honest I got tired of reading it as they were all similar is story line. I did like the story about the battle between humans and gods. But the rest of the stories in the book after it held no into me. I would suggest you read the little snippets before each story to decide if you want to read the whole story.

Review just for The Heartstone Thief by Pippa DaCosta:

I have been a fan of Ms. DaCosta’s since I first picked up a book by her a few years ago. This book made me even more of a fan. Some of the review will be hard to write because I try not to include spoilers. One of the things I really liked about this book was the slow, steady changing of the male protagonist, Vance. He hated his life, himself, and everyone around him when the book first started. But by the end of the book, with the help of the other main character Shaianna, he learned to not blame himself unnecessarily. Also, having a male POV was a different dimension, which I really liked, and because of the events at the end of the book, it made perfect sense why the author did that. And, speaking of the ending, wow! I wanted to cry, shout, and stamp my feet; I really didn’t see that coming, but looking back, I should have. As always with the author’s books, this offering was well-written, had a wonderful, unique plot, and had fascinating characters. If you like dark, urban fantasy/epic fantasy, give this book a try! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed. This same review will be posted on both Goodreads and Amazon.

Review for J.E. Taylor's Silencing the Siren

This J.E. Taylor story is sexy and heartbreaking at the same time. Not only was she able to give heart and story to the mythological creature, merman, she also made the story captivating and the characters interesting.

I can't get enough of Kylee and Alex! I'm excited to read about the rest of their adventures!

Just picked up this box set to read HIBERNIAN BLOOD by Dean F. Wilson as I've been a fan of his work from the Children of Telm series and the Great Iron War.

The story follows James Halmorris, an American who comes to Ireland to find his roots. Instead, he finds so much more . . .

Expect vampires, vampire hunters, and much more, all taking place near where I grew up in Dublin (yippee!) As always, Dean creates fascinating characters and an intriguing plot which keeps you turning page after page until the end.

As far as I know, this set is the only place you can get HIBERNIAN BLOOD in ebook, plus there's a whole bunch of other awesome fantasy stories inside by equally as awesome authors. 21 full, high-quality stories by international bestsellers for 99c? You'd be a fool not to purchase this set!

Will update this review once I manage to get through the full set -- perhaps in a year from now as it's over 4,000 pages!

Ok, so the authors story that I wanted to read in this boxed set, I am no longer going to read. The description says that he's pining for his mate, who is named, so he knows her or at least who she is. His friend thinks that the best way to get over her is by sleeping with someone else.....so they do sleep with someone else (worst friend ever). Wth, what the hell is that about? So damn disappointed, so I won't be reading that because why in the hell would I, not really a "romance" at that point. The description goes on to say there are problems between the four....duh, you slept with someone that wasn't your damn mate, of course their will be problems.

I am still going to try and read the other stories, but just couldn't quite yet....I was a wee bit heartbroken *sigh*.

This is a review of Dammed If I Do by Erin Hayes. This is the first book in this paranormal romance novel. Absolutely refreshing vampire novel that is highly captivating. I am so looking forward to reading book two in this fantastic series. A new spin on the whole vampire world that is exciting & holds your attention. A unrivaled novel that is truly original with a captivating plot. I love the compelling characters as they jump off the pages. The premise of the novel is distinctive & reels you in & the story keeps you glued to the end. I volunteerly reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
