As a physical object, this is without doubt the highest quality, most beautifully produced book that I will ever likely own. As for the content, the photographs in Mitchell's Wonderland series are simply stunning. Each one is a mini world filled with beauty, intrigue and wonder, but often tinged with a hint of darkness. And yet, they are also composite parts of something greater; weaving together to form one ongoing narrative of life, death and healing.
The project itself has tragic beginnings. The photographer's mother was sadly diagnosed with terminal cancer, and the Wonderland series became Mitchell's way of both escaping the pain of the real world, and honouring the memory of her mother, by bringing to life the magic of the fairy tales and stories she had regaled her with as a child, and providing an escape into nature to bring her characters and dreamscapes to life. The thematic meaning and attention to detail throughout each piece is nothing short of remarkable.
The series at large is the epitome of the power that art has to channel emotion into something truly meaningful and utterly transporting. The inclusion of behind the scenes shots and the extensive diaries Mitchell kept during the production of the series also provided nice context for each of the shots. They explained the inspiration behind the imagery, and revealed how she found locations and went about creating the stunning costumes and set pieces; not to mention what a time-consuming labour of love the whole thing was.
The book is a wonderful achievement. It's one I know I will treasure and revisit time and time again throughout the years.
