Vaughn Richardson enjoys living and working as a ranch hand in rural Montana. Among the unofficial perks of the job is the fact that the handsome young man finds himself surrounded by other virile men. Vaughn enjoys casual sexual encounters with a number of these men. But his deeper, even more urgent desires seem to be stirred whenever the sex gets a bit rough, or when it incorporates any hint of bondage and discipline or dominant-and-submissive roleplaying. Vaughn has to learn how to overcome his lingering shame about his needs, and embrace them fully. With the help of a number of sex partners, he does so.
Roland Graeme is one of several pseudonyms used by a prolific writer of erotic fiction. Graeme, a descendant of Swiss immigrants and a native of Pennsylvania, resides in Buffalo, New York. He earned a Ph.D. in English by writing his doctoral dissertation on the novels of Sir Walter Scott (“Roland Graeme” is the protagonist of Scott’s novel The Abbot). His interests, in addition to literature, include classical music (especially opera), history, and world religions, as well as, not surprisingly, human sexuality, in all its variety and richness.
Graeme has been, at one time or another, a teacher, a factory worker, a civil servant, and a music critic. The one common denominator throughout his career(s) has been his passion for freelance writing. He continues to hold down his current full-time “day job” while writing in his spare time.
Well, it’s full of sex. Kinky sex, straight sex, oral sex, ménage sex, orgy sex, and yeah…. Sex. There may have been a very few conjunction words used to string together the sex scenes. I remember one or two. Did I mention this book is all about the sex?
Vaughn Richardson is a ranch hand in rural Montana. And those conjunction words I mentioned are what tell the story of Vaughn’s sexual awakening. As a young man, he gets himself into a bad situation on a ranch where he lives and works. The story begins with Vaughn on his way to an orgy after escaping said bad ranch and the foreman/other ranch hands who work there. It’s a journey of discovery for Vaughn into the kind of sex he likes and the kind of men he likes to have it with. The story unfolds from there. With each new intimate encounter Vaughn has, he learns a little about himself and, ultimately, he commits to one man and a future they could have together. I will say that Graeme doesn’t try and sugarcoat this book; it is billed as an erotic romance and it is. Everyone is above board with the multiple partner situations; there is no cheating, no angst. With all the sex Vaughn has, he stays completely honest with himself and his partners. It can be a gritty look at the sexual awakening of a young man who likes it rough, often, and controlled.
This book fills the bill for those looking for a lot of sex in their stories. It also fills the bill for those who every now and then need an erotic romance, when it really doesn’t matter what the story is. Get my drift?! The sex is well written, the MC is interesting—being inside Vaughn’s head is an intriguing place to be. If you are looking for “one of those kind” of books, then get this one. There are lots of happy endings.
I had mixed feelings about this book. I love books that have lots of sex in them, and this book didn’t disappoint but for the length of the book there was almost too much sex, but I guess that’s why it’s categorized as a gay erotica book instead of a gay romance. This book had lots of sex and minimal storyline. Just enough storyline to get to the next sex scene. The book starts out with a 23-year-old Vaughn Richardson going to a sex party and staying there for the next six chapters of detailed sexual encounters between a house full of super horny males. Vaughn is placed in many different sexual situations and finds that he enjoys getting tied up and having rough sex and when there’s a bit of dominant/submissive role-playing. Then for the next three chapters, we flash back to the first ranch that Vaughn started working at which he affectionately refers to as the ranch from hell. His roommate Will is supposedly straight but has no problem with mutual jackoff sessions and topping Vaughn and helping Vaughn get over his shame over his needs. Vaughn gets his first taste at being used as a piece of meat by the Foreman John Wayne Kearney who uses Vaughn’s employment as a way to get into his pants. Vaughn loses his virginity to John Wayne and gets his first taste at being in a Dominant/submissive relationship and finds that he enjoys it. But he also realizes that neither Will nor John Wayne cared about him and are both just using him. He finds a new ranch to work at and promises himself that he will be no man’s sex slave again. He’s hoping to find a new lover or two to begin a relationship with. From there on we’re back to the present after the grand sex party, and we get some background about the new ranch that Vaughn is at. Vaughn gets a new job at the Burning Spur that has better pay and much better living conditions and a whole new set of sexy hot men. Vaughn makes a new friend with benefits at the ranch named Flint. Vaughn also starts up a relationship with a deputy sheriff by the name of Aaron who also ends up going with Vaughn and Flint to the next sex party. I like that Vaughn is open with both Aaron and Flint that he’s seeing multiple people and isn’t doing it behind their backs. And during the party at Darren’s, Vaughn realized that he had feelings for Flint and upgraded Flint from friends with benefits to boyfriend. ****I would like to thank the author for the privilege and opportunity of reading this ARC. My review is an honest opinion of the book**** optimummblog.wordpress.com
