The Wolf of the Mountain by author Joshua Erik Rossi
So it begins... a story of love... beautiful, warm, rich, tender. Like a lazy gurgle of water, lit with sunlight, meandering over stones warmed by the day's heat...the sound breathtaking as it lulls the senses to breathe..... that is the emotional essence of this story. The layers, woven in deftly by a loving hand, guided by a soft touch until richness cocoons, wrapping your soul, holding you close enough to hear the beat of it's heart. That is how I felt while reading... as if my heart was opened to feel... my soul opened to breathe... as if I were there, with Jack... as Morgan, a teacher... a lover... guides him towards the path of their joining. Love..... this is spectacularly about love.
As a reader, I enjoy Joshua's books... he consistently produces a high quality, entertaining read with story lines that effortlessly flow, characters that are well fleshed out, both believable and likeable... his writing style is descriptive and lush. I swear the tension left my body as i read the first few chapters... occasional tears framed my face while I was drawn into this world as Jack takes you through his journey with Morgan. This is one of the most stunning, emotionally evocative stories that I have read in a long time... with each chapter it gets better and better. With every word read I fell in love a bit more... Mother Earth, the Creator, natural law... spirituality and sensuality... this is what a shifter story should be!
No matter how many words I add to this review, I am not confident that I am imparting it's true richness and depth. Paranormal, adventure, native history, a bit of magic... all blended to perfection.... it excited me, tempting me to continue reading. It concluded with a bit of a lovely, unexpected twist at the end... it reached a place within and held strong, leaving me with a restored, uplifted heart. I could not put it down. This is one beautifully crafted book!
Sometimes this novel is a little disjointed, confusing and contradictory, it is however, entertaining and endearing. The major problem i have with it though is the massive dues ex machina Joshua resorts to using to conclude the HEA ending. Jack's journal of confessions works as a Euripides prologue and while this whole novel comes together as an almost modern example of a classical Greek Tragedy but set in the time frame of the American Indian Wars. Locking the shifter clan to the character of Crazy horse was an interesting choice and while it may have been a useful plot tool to incorporate his vision quests and then the loss of faith in the spirits there was a much more viable option in the form of Sitting Bull, (it was after all Sitting Bull's vision of the battle of little big horn not crazy horses) and the Ghost Dance traditions that grew out of jack Wilson's visions. There are a lot more plot possibility that the author could have used to better develop the characters and not have to use a god from the machine device to clean up his messy plot lines.
3.5 Stars.. I had to think about this one. I'd previously read the first 3 novellas and then completed the story with this full book. I loved the first half of the book for Morgan and Jack but something in the last half was....don't know, werried or just meh. This has some great moments for them and some adventures and drama as only Mr Rossi does best. This is a shiftier mpreg story with a little bit extra included so you'll need a clear mind of what a "shiftier story" should be (think outside the box). I loved the knotting sexy scenes and twists that kept coming up in the story. I'm not a big fan of Mpreg and didn't like the scenes that lead up to this with Morgan holding secrets from Jack, especially when he didn't know what the hell was happening to him. The ending was totally different to what I was expecting to happen but hmm, I wont say what I thought but I'll let you decide. The story is set in 1874 when its the white settlers and their armies against the Indian people and their tribes being chased out or captive. The diary of Jack and his adventures begins with Morgan..
Great story, plot was laid out well, towards the end I got a little confused about something that happened but it was later on explained and I realized I may have misinterpreted something that happened. Being that I was trying to read this during Black Friday while waiting in lines it was no fault of the author but more of me not giving it the attention to that scene. I felt like I was missing something in the final pages which is why I gave it 4 stars. Please read warnings as well his is a shifter, m/m mpreg, if you are not into it please don’t get it.
This book was a bit to flaky for me, I typically read m/m paranormal and erotica, so I'm not sure what it was, as they say I just couldn't get into it. I ended up skimming and at the end wondered what happened. But by no means the worst book I've ever read.
