Deepwood: A Haunting

Rate this book
Cecily Weber's marriage is fading when she and her husband, Horst, move into the small house at 27 Deepwood. It isn't long before Cecily begins to experience strange occurrences in their new home - occurrences that never seem to affect Horst, and only widen the rift between them.

When Cecily meets Howard, a neighbor and longtime resident of Deepwood, she knows he has secrets, but doesn't realize how deep they run. Howard suggests she leave the house, even if it means leaving her husband behind. But Cecily wants answers. Might the haunting at Deepwood break - or remake - her marriage?

Senza infamia e senza lode...

This story from C.K. Brooke is unlike her other books of romantic and adventure fiction. It takes the reader close up into a once-loving, now tense marriage that seems to be falling apart without reason. A new neighbor complicates things and foreshadows a change coming, but it's not one the reader might expect. In the ARC I was given for a fair review, it was clear Brooke has a deft hand at creating suspense and it works here in what would make a great Twilight Zone episode if that show was still around!

Perfect lazy-Saturday-morning-in-bed read!

I wanted something short and sweet and compelling, this book was just the thing for a lazy Saturday morning in bed while noshing on croissants and coffee. The characters are interesting, believable, and very likable. Their situation kept my eyes glued to the tablet clear to the end. Plenty of wonderful surprises and twists made for a fun and mysterious little tale. I highly recommend this for anyone with an hour to spare, and a craving for a spooky, but warm story.

A simple slow-burn story with enough suspense to keep it going. While the supernatural theme pushes the narrative along, it's the emotional connection (or lack of it) between Cecily and Horst that's at the heart of this short story. While I did feel that Cecily could react a little obviously to things, I liked how that nauseous tension between the couple is explored via the ghostly goings on.

This was a heartwarming, but eerie tale, of how the thing that is spooky could be the one thing to bring two people closer together!

I appreciated the "normal" household noises and how they were used to show something else more fantastical could be happening within the walls.

A marvelously crafted tale, a quick read, and an overall feel good story!
