I appreciated this self-help with its many tips and ideas. At the back of the book there are pages of lists to help for tasks at different times, daily, weekly and seasonally.
This book was more about "hiding" and storage instead of decluttering. There is however, a nice section on how to declutter digital items, and I enjoyed that bit.
First of all, yikes. For a book about decluttering by a professional organization consultant, reading this was in fact a real mess. I was first interested in this book for the photographs. The two organizing books I have read were all words and I figured it would be nice to get visuals of pristine tidying. Unfortunately, the words that were in it were so disorganized that I often found it difficult or inconvenient to read. Many times, Geralin Thomas would reference something on a different page, or the paragraphs were numbered, but never in a cohesive order. I feel like this book was trying to read like a magazine, but even magazines have a certain method or order that this book certainly did not possess.
I was also very disappointed that throughout most of this book, the solution always seemed to be having more storage receptacles rather than actually getting rid of your stuff. Kind of surprising when you realize that Thomas consults hoarders on television. It just seemed odd that she would even suggest hiding everything away in your home. Not that she says it outright, but this is the impression I got from this book.
There's also the fact that many of her solutions seemed to only be for people with the space for so much stuff. On one page in particular, it shows a kitchen that is so large and spacious, it had me second guessing whether I had a real kitchen or a Fisher Price version. Seriously, a lot of people who wish to declutter often don't have the amount of space Thomas seems to think everyone has. This book is for the privileged few who have more than 600sqft to work with. And, in a way, that is going to cause this book to age terribly. Many people around my age and younger won't have the kind of space Thomas dreamed up for all of us in this book.
The only reason why I will give this book two stars instead of one is because it has lists in the back, which I honestly think are better than anything else in this book. I can go over these lists as needed. In the scheme of things though, I could have just as easily found lists like these online.
Overall, I don't recommend this book. If you really want to declutter your home, this book isn't the right one to read. And while the lists in the end are helpful, such information can be sought elsewhere.
Practical, and inspirational. The pictures and steps make it easy to follow, and break it down to make it manageable.
I'm crazy messy, but it was a helpful book with a simple concept. If you don't love it, need it or want it, get rid of it. Then it shows you ways to organize. I'll probably have to review it from time to time to implement in my home.
Definitely recommend this gem, especially over the Marie Kondo and other decluttering books which are often text heavy and overly optimistic or idealistic.
Thomas makes it possible to bring your home in order.
A Rend a lelke mindennek!
I thought I would be picking up a usual book on decluttering and organizing stuff. Turns out that it contains very useful and practical advise on organizing various spaces in the home.
What surprised me was the author goes one step further to write about organizing your time and mentality around decluttering. The book goes deeper than just the surface but also addresses the human aspects of it.
The font size killed this book. Way too tiny. (Unrelated to the review ranking I personally did not find the photos attractive either.) Much of the advice was solid. Some of the advice was way too simplistic/idealized. The inclusion of a section on packing and digital clutter was both unexpected and much appreciated.
A minimalistic, to the point guide on how to declutter and organise your home. Though brief at points, the book is a useful starting place to get things in order.
Clear, brief, intelligent strategies to organizing your life. Multiple encouragements to disregard the tyranny of Pinterest and follow your own life, desires, and habits to make your home, and life, more organized, peaceful and productive. Unlike similar tomes, this one remembers that the goal of all of this work is freedom to pursue those things that make you happy, not to build your internet fame. I especially liked the checklists at the end and the chapter about family meetings and communication. Photographs are lovely.
