Anne Catherine Emmerich

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich was a Roman Catholic Augustinian nun, stigmatic, mystic, visionary and ecstatic.

The daughter of a peasant couple, Anne Catherine Emmerich worked as a seamstress and servant before entering an Augustinian convent in 1802 at age 28. Frail and pious, she became known for her ecstasies, visions of the supernatural and "conversations" with Jesus.

After she became bedridden in 1813 she developed the stigmata -- bleeding wounds corresponding to those of the crucified Christ. A church investigation pronounced the wounds genuine. Ill for many years until her death at age 49, she offered up her suffering for the souls in purgatory. She was beatified on October 3, 2004 by Pope John Paul II.

”When [Joseph] returned to the grotto, and before entering his retreat, he cast his eyes upon the Blessed Virgin. He saw her praying on her knees before the couch: her back was turned towards him and she was looking towards the east. She seemed to him as if surrounded by flames, and all the grotto seemed to shine with a supernatural light. He looked at it as Moses when he saw the burning bush: then seized with a holy fear, he entered into his cell and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.”

✨ This is a fascinating account of Blessed Anne Emmerich’s mystical vision on the Nativity of Our Lord.

There’s a lot to be said about it, but one thing I want to note specially is the description of the birth of Jesus. Movies usually portray His holy birth as something quite ordinary, even painful to Mary. We often forget that Mary was conceived without sin; therefore, it must follow that the agony of childbirth—one of the curses of Original Sin—was also withheld from her. Blessed Anne’s vision shows that Jesus’s birth was miraculous: it happened during Mary’s ecstasy and needed no human assistance. Even St. Joseph “accompanied” this event by praying prostrate on the ground.

Of course, this is not Scripture, so it is by no means canon. But, it is deeply enriching and a worthy object of contemplation. There are many other things that you will find eye-opening here. A recommended Advent read, certainly.

If you would like to experience Christmas as never before, start with reading this book. It is an absolutely wonderful narrative of events leading up to the birth of Jesus, from the mediations of Sister Emmerich, a German stigmatic nun (1774-1824), whose meditations lead to the discovery of Mary's House in Epheus, Turkey.

Side note: there is a replica of Mary's house in Jamaca Vermont.

The book provides detailed personal descriptions of how Joseph was chosen for Mary's husband, their wedding and wedding ring, the angel appearing to Mary and the incarnation, Mary's mother Ann's preparation for the birth of Jesus, and Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem.

You will want to re-read this personal account every Christmas season.

Amazing information.

This book is about the visions on the birth of Jesus Christ. The person is Blessed Anne Catherine Emmenrich. In this book (were written by a witness) she sees the birth of Jesus. Many people like myself believed a human being delivering and "why always virgin". She saw the birth and all the sources that happened before and after Jesus birth.
I have also the book about the Passion of Christ. And I am scared of reading it. I always cry when I listened the passion. And if that book is similar to the other one, I just very concerned.
