Three young doctors-their hopes, their dreams, their unexpected desires...
Dr. Paige Taylor: She swore it was euthanasia, but when Paige inherited a million dollars from a patient, the D.A. called it murder.
Dr. Kat Hunter: She vowed never to let another man too close again-until she accepted the challenge of a deadly bet.
Dr. Honey Taft: To make it in medicine, she knew she'd need something more than the brains God gave her.
Racing from the life-and-death decisions of a big major hospital to the tension-packed fireworks of a murder trial, Nothing Lasts Forever lays bare the ambitions and fears of healers and killers, lovers and betrayers.
Sidney Sheldon (1917-2007) was an American writer who won awards in three careers—a Broadway playwright, a Hollywood TV and movie screenwriter, and a best-selling novelist.
His TV works spanned a twenty-year period during which he created I Dream of Jeannie (1965-70), Hart to Hart (1979-84), and The Patty Duke Show (1963-66), but it was not until after he turned 50 and began writing best-selling novels such as Master of the Game (1982), The Other Side of Midnight (1973) and Rage of Angels (1980) that he became most famous.
It actually shocked me that I haven't really reviewed any book from my favorite author. Yes, Sidney Sheldon is my favorite author. Heard that right. Quite surprising for a 14 year old who's fond of reading Young Adult fiction, eh?
This book was actually gripping. Everytime I let go of it, it makes me wanna cradle it in my arms and murmur, "I'm sorry for putting you down. Let me continue reading you." So this story was mainly about a female doctor who had a patient who seemingly hates her. And this certain patient had asked the doctor to kill him because 'he can't take the pain anymore', and so she did. She committed euthanasia. The doctor thought that that's all to it. End of story. But afterwards, she discovered that her patient had given her an inheritance. Lots of lots of money. So other people had thought of her as purposely murdering the patient. The chapters, aside from the prologue mainly tells what happened before the event until the end of the event.
Actually, the story wasn't really appealing for me. It wasn't all that great. It wasn't that bad either. I like this author mainly because of his writing style. Weird eh? But his writing style if honestly the best I've ever read. Fast paced, but not leaving any important details. He's just awesome.
“You have two choices. you can keep running and hiding and blaming the world for your problems, or you can stand up for yourself and decide to be somebody important.” —Sidney Sheldon, Nothing Lasts Forever
Once again, I owe my life to Sidney Sheldon (over-reacting mode). I can’t find enough words to say because it would be too repetitive. I have read twelve (12) of his outstanding novels and this is by far, his BEST! I cannot recommend it highly enough. It’s too breathtaking! I cried when I finished reading the novel, and the book spoke to me and said, Nothing Lasts Forever. Even the good things never last. And that I am just under the spell of Sheldon, another Book Hangover. I bet it will take days before I start reading another novel because school is at my door steps and I am still living in this book’s world.
The novel addresses one of the roots of debates all around the world, the mercy killing or Euthanasia. Euthanasia is the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals in a relatively painless way as possible. There are different perspective, opinions and ideas towards Euthanasia that is why it is not practice in some parts of the world. And in the novel, our beautiful protagonist is half-heartedly a Pro-Euthanasia.
Moreover, the book tackles discrimination in gender and color because our characters are all female doctors, one is beautiful, smart & belongs to the middle-class, Dr Paige Taylor, the other is Dr Honey Taft, a very rich but self-doubted and secretive person and last but not the least, the smartest among the rest, the beautiful black woman, Dr. Kat Hunter. Don't forget that back in the early 20th century, Medical Doctor is a profession dominated by men and people on the highest social class.
And lastly, the novel covertly reminds the readers (especially aspiring, practicing and full-time doctors) the value of the Hippocratic Oath. It is said in the healer's Oath that they have made a promise to save lives. Pledging to the oath is an act of one who, when lawfully required to tell the truth, takes God to witness that what he says is true. It is a religious act by which the party invokes God not only to witness the truth and sincerity of his promise, but also to avenge his imposture or violated faith, or in other words to punish his false swearing if he shall be guilty of it [Legal Dictionary: Oath]. Therefore, when one takes oath he/she made a binding promise to God to do or say something lawfully and ethically. An oath is constituently related to all of the professions around the world because it obliged man to never betray humanity and to continue creating a world free from danger that leads abruptly to death.
It is very rare to come across a book that is well-written. The characters are all winsome, especially the protagonist, one of the female doctors, Paige Turner. She's too smart, too kind and too lovable. Sidney Sheldon created another one-of-a-kind novel that follows a twisty plot with his extraordinary Sheldon unpredictable ending!
“You have two choices. you can keep running and hiding and blaming the world for your problems, or you can stand up for yourself and decide to be somebody important.”
Nothing Lasts Forever by Sidney Sheldon
One of the few Sheldon books I didn't like. And that surprised me because I love almost everything by him. He is still one of my all time favorite writers. I just did not like this one.
Maybe it is because nearly all of it takes place in a hospital. For whatever reason, I felt it lacked the signature power Sheldon creates in his books. This book is about three female doctors and I did not really enjoy the story.
It was quite gloomy, lacking is usual "twists" and some of the stories were really upsetting. I will also say it seemed very different then most of his works.
While not horrible, I had to push myself to chug forward on this one. Although I love Sheldon and have read almost all his books. I found this book difficult to read.
All three of the Doctors are haunted about SOMETHING and all three of them get involved in serious issues revolving around the hospital where they work. Parts of it were Maudlin , parts were gloomy and parts were frankly just a downer.
I hate to rate anything by this wonderful writer under a three or four. Nothing Lasts Forever, though, did not even feel like a traditional Sheldon book.
SPOILERS:
Also part of my distaste comes from the book morphing into a horror novel halfway through. And it morphs into a GRAPHIC horror novel. There is no suspect..we know who did it. I just..I felt like I was watching a Criminal Minds episode. Maybe some people would like that aspect but it did not do it for me.
With all Sheldon's works, I suppose it is inevitable that there would be SOMETHING I would not like. It is also important to note that a two for a Sheldon book is equivalent to a three for 90 percent of books because Sheldon writes so incredibly even with a book I did not like.
Sidney Sheldon at his best! Nothing Lasts Forever is a powerful story of three female protagonists. The characterization is simply wonderful. Dialogues are precise. A recommended read!
Sidney Sheldon is a first time read for me and I have to ask myself why I had never picked up one of his books before now. I think that he is a brilliant writer and I am glad that I finally had the opportunity to pick up one of his books. I was totally engrossed in the story and really hated for it to end.
In this book we have the stories of 3 different female doctors working in the same hospital. Dr. Paige Taylor, who is on trial for the murder of a patient that she testifies was a euthanasia, Dr. Kat Hunter, who gets involved with a deadly bet, and Dr. Honey Taft who feels forced to becoming a doctor and does everything besides her job. Each one of these doctors are fighting their own separate demons and trying to overcome some horrific obstacles while at the same time causing some serious problems with the hospital they were all employed at.
Most of the story has a setting inside of the Embarcadero hospital in San Francisco. The author writes the hospital with such realism that readers can visualize themselves there among the doctors, patients and their families. It seemed like with the turn of every page something new came to light for these 3 women wreaking havoc in their lives and the lives of other surrounding doctors they worked with. This story also had a lot of great back story on each of the women that allows the readers to connect to them better and also made them become far more believable and realistic.
I loved the characters in the story. They were so well developed. So much better than I could ever explain in this review. They were less than perfect, but perfect with their flaws and shortcomings as the dealt with the everyday problems they were faced with both in the hospital setting and in their own personal lives. I felt so strongly for them, each one in a different way, and I love when an author can do that for his readers. I felt so much emotion and three women will not be easily forgotten.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves adult medical thrillers, and mysteries. This story has so many different elements to it, love, friendship, rage, hate, jealousy, envy, honesty and trust. I think really anyone could enjoy this book because the writing is amazing. I will be sure to pick up more from Sidney Sheldon in the future.
Three youthful specialists their expectations, their fantasies, their sudden cravings... Dr. Paige Taylor: She swore it was willful extermination, yet when Paige acquired a million dollars from a patient, the D.A. called it kill. Dr. Kat Hunter: She pledged never to let another man excessively close again-until the point when she acknowledged the test of a lethal wager. Dr. Nectar Taft: To make it in solution, she knew she'd require something more than the brains God gave her. Dashing from the life-and-demise choices of a major significant clinic to the pressure stuffed firecrackers of a murder trial, Nothing Lasts Forever exposes the aspirations and fears of healers and executioners, sweethearts and traitors. Furthermore, demonstrates at the end of the day that no peruser can outguess Sidney Sheldon, the ace of the unforeseen..
“You know, it's not fair. Women are judged inferior until we prove ourselves, and men are judged superior until they prove what assholes they are.” ― Nothing Lasts Forever
Here are some examples of things that are said and done in this book:
**"In the uncomfortable backseat of Merton's car, Honey had sex for the first time....she did not particularly enjoy it, but that was not important. The important thing was that Merton enjoyed it.....So this is how I please a man, Honey thought."
Honey makes me want to bang my head against a wall. There can't possibly be girls like her in the world, right? I need there to not be girls like that in the world. Or at the very least this needs to have been a 90s thing.
**At one point there is a line about a doctor, nicknamed 007, who the book says "[takes] out organs that were healthy." In what world would NO ONE in a hospital do anything about this?! But wait! It gets worse! Another resident actually says to Paige, when she brings this up, "Calm down. I'll take you out and buy you lunch."
I mean, REALLY?!
**The girls get the bright idea to throw a party to cheer themselves up. Except they throw said party AT THE HOSPITAL. And then when everyone gets paged and has to go back to saving lives, (y'know, that thing they do IN A HOSPITAL) one of them actually says, "I can't believe what's happening."
CAN'T YOU?
**Kat introduces herself as follows:
"I'm Kate Hunter. They call me Kat."
Kate and Kat are BOTH short forms of Katherine. If you prefer Kat, why are you introducing yourself as Kate?!
**There is a typo on the first page. Seriously.
**Honey says that she has bad luck with men, and Kat says that maybe she'll have better luck at the hospital. Because when you're a woman just starting your career in a male dominated field, you would absolutely think this way.
And there's more:
Paige finds out that she's going to be working with a world-renowned doctor, whom she has never met, nor even seen a picture of, and before she even meets him she HAS A SEX DREAM ABOUT HIM.
REALLY?! It was at this point I started to think this book had to be a joke. Like maybe somebody swapped out the real copy for this ridiculousness. Because this book has gotten good reviews and I honestly don't understand why.
**There are SO MANY things wrong with the chapter where Jason and Paige meet. First of all, he calls the hospital and asks for her home number, and a secretary JUST GIVES IT TO HIM, without even asking WHY he wants it. Oh, and when he shows up for their first date, she's asleep in the on call room. A nurse tells him where she is, instead of calling her, and then he goes in and just WATCHES HER SLEEP. It's creepy. And apparently at this point he already thinks he's going to marry her.
For their second date, he takes her to MEET HIS PARENTS. Their SECOND date! Guys, this is so. creepy.
Oh, and on said date, she falls asleep at the dinner table. Like, head falls straight down on the table. In front of his parents. While there is food on the table.
I mean, COME ON.
**At one point there's a patient who it turns out has cholera, and the administrator decides to cover it up because it would hurt the hospital, and we're supposed to believe that EVERYONE is totally fine to go along with this.
REALLY?!
**The part where Paige euthanizes the patient she winds up on trial for murdering is weird. She takes all of three seconds to agree to do it. And then she does it right away. No second guessing. No discussing it with her colleagues or Kat and Honey. And it says that the patient only had a few days to live. I'm pro-DAS, but even I thought that if he's only got a few days left, why do it? It would obviously lead to some problems for her, so why bring all of that trouble down on herself over the difference of a few days?
**Paige doesn't know that her boyfriend and future husband has married someone else until he shows up on her doorstep with his new wife.
SERIOUSLY?!
So yeah. This book is weird. A lot of the lines and situations just seem so ridiculous, like they'd never happen.
The author wrote for television before he started writing novels, and it shows. The book reads like a script. It's mostly just dialogue and the scenes move very quickly. It jumps between scenes and characters in a really odd way. Kind of like you'd see on TV. The lack of descriptive passages isn't entirely a negative, because I generally find descriptive passages to be boring, and making it dialogue-heavy makes the book a quick read, but at the very least I would expect a portion of the book to be dedicated to what was going on in a character's head in between the dialogue.
Mostly I was just disappointed that the author couldn't shift from the one medium to the other. In fact, the epilogue reads EXACTLY like the end to a movie based on a true story, where they tell you what happened to each of the real-life people after the movie ends.
The thing that's a real shame is it actually starts to get good toward the end. It stays on one narrative - none of that weird jumping between brief scenes that have nothing to do with each other - and the story actually becomes interesting. But then the book is over, so....
I've always loved a good suspense and mystery. After all, I grew up reading Sherlock Holmes rather than reading Princess stories.
All through out my high school year, I read all of Sidney Sheldon's books starting with Tell Me Your Dreams. I was hooked after the first page. No kidding. Sheldon can do that to you.
Nothing Lasts Forever is one of my favorite books. I still remember my struggle with this one. A classmate has a copy of this beauty and I know she doesn't read novels much alone our textbooks. I don't know why she has a Sheldon book. She's more like the type of person to buy shoes than books. Anyway, I asked her if I can borrow it and guess what? The bitch won't lend me her copy. Her reason: She just don't like sharing her things.
That crushed me. Honestly.
But the book-gods love me so much. You know what happened? We have this big individual project that takes up around 30% of our grades and because Bitchy is a part of our dance troupe, she doesn't have the time to work on that certain project.
How stereotypical is that?
Of course, I saw my opportunity. What I did, I gave her an offer she can't refuse. I'm not talking about sex guys. Just to be clear
*Shhh* I manipulated offered to do her project in exchange of the book. All hush hush of course. Guess what's her answer?
So I get to read the book, plus own it. She get to maintain her grades.
Happy ever after.
So back to the book.
Nothing lasts forever is a total mind-fuck book. All of Sheldon's books are mind-fucks actually. What I love about this is that, it portrays the strength of women and FYI, this book was published when women rights are not yet fully acknowledged. (Even today, some assholes are still against Women Rights)
So if you want an book so expertly written that suspense, mystery and betrayal are the main dish plus a dessert of sex and ambition then you better start reading this book.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
If I had to choose one of his books to call my utmost favorite I would have to say this one.
Again and again he did. He delivered a fast paced keep you on the tip of your toes turning the pages as fast as you can story.
Every single one of the lady doctors in this story captured me and held me in prison locked up in their strengths, heartaches, and abilities. This story was like no other that he wrote before.
With every page you turned there was so much more going on. The drama, the affairs, the lies, the love.... to no end..
I loved those women doctors especially during a time that women were not allowed to be doctors and they succeeded.
The ending I was not expecting. I was so surprised that the strongest one of them all (the one that I thought was the strongest) ended up dead. And to top it off the way she died! I screamed when I got to that part of the story (Ill save it for you to read) She was the least that I expected and that is what made this story different from his others because sometimes Sheldon can be so predictable.
'There are three classes of human beings: men, women and women physician.' -Sir William Osler
Three female doctors begin five years in training at Embarcadero County Hospital in San Francisco. The story, set against hospital and courtroom, chronicles their lives together and their struggle against those who are determined to see that they don't succeed.
Dr. Paige Taylor - After she inherited a million dollars from a patient whom she 'helped to die' at their request, the District Attorney charged her with murder.
Dr. Kat Hunter - She vowed never to allow a man to get too close to her again...until she accepted the challenge of a deadly bet.
Dr. Honey Taft - To make it in medicine, she knew that she'd need something more then the brains God gave her.
From the life-and-death decisions faced in the operating room to the tension-packed fireworks of a murder trial, Nothing Lasts Forever by Sidney Sheldon lays bare the ambitions and fears of healers and killers, lovers and betrayers.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a wonderful page-turner that I couldn't put down! I do so enjoy Sidney Sheldon as an author, even though I have just recently got back into reading his books after an hiatus of several years. I give this book an A+!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book.It could easily make a plot for a soap opera. Imagine it as general hospital or young and the restless. There are good doctors, manipulative doctors, murders,a trial, love stories, heartbreaks, all set in a San Fransisco hospital. Three female doctors Paige,Kat and Honey are the main protagonists of this drama. This is definitely not a masterpiece but it's readable and definitely keeps the reader interested. Is Paige Taylor innocent or guilty? From the beginning of the book the young doctor is accused of murdering a patient and inheriting 1.000.000 dollars and then the writer goes back in time and unravels this interesting drama. Three and a half stars from me.
🩻«Анатомії Грей» / «Доктора Гауса»;
💪 сильних героїнь, які борються за місце під сонцем;
🩸драми, медицини та детективу;
The first time was its urdu translation in a digest. I liked it so much that i re-read a couple more times.
Several years later, when I started reading English; I borrowed this from my roommate. And it was just as entertaining in English - even though I knew the story by heart.
And then again, I bought a copy for my personal library.
But then I gave away all the books.
What I am trying to say is, I love the book. I love the three friends and their struggle in the hospital and crazy shifts. And then the crazy life after one of them is killed.
The book is fast paced alright but Sheldon didnt fail to let me see whats really going on inside an operating room and how women are treated when they step inside a man's dominated profession (which I dont know if still the same case on today's era). The typical Sheldon finale surely blowed my mind because it was the 'she's-screwed-and-hopeless' scene but again he casted his own magic. Im not trying to be smartsy pantsy on this review but Sheldon did a great job and after reading this novel I cant help but vomit words to praise him. :D
Oh, Lord, I am DONE with this! I don't think I can give it any stars....can't say I liked but can't say I didn't like it either, because it sure was entertaining! If I hadn't had to work, this book would have been finished within 24 hours.
Like I told Bob, I should have left Sheldon in my pre-adolescent childhood, because I never realized just how overly dramatic and "soap opera-ly" he is. The dialogue is horrible and superficial. There is no depth to the story at all. We won't even get into how horrible the medical facts are. In the beginning of the novel there is a gratitude statement to all of the doctors, nurses, and techs who "provided their expertise" to him. He either didn't listen close enough, or maybe things really were different in the early 90s, who knows?
If there is one thing this novel has taught me, it's to never read Sheldon again. And I think he's dead now, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Fine since I can't seem to talk myself out of leaving the stars blank, I'm giving it 2.
