An Endless Sea of Stars

Rate this book
The year is 2121. While Earth has conquered exploration of the Milky Way, we have yet to develop an interstellar engine to take us beyond our own galaxy. Thus the Intergalactic Exploration Alliance and the Gemini Project were formed.

Lieutenant Tobias Dekker is fresh out of the IEA academy and determined to be assigned to the Gemini engineering team. Putting career above all else. He knows from experience that relationships have no place in the Alliance. Commander Caden Flynn is equally determined to see the Gemini prototype take flight to uncharted space. The engine is his late father's design and he wants nothing more than to be the test pilot that breaks the next light speed barrier.

Two men dreaming of a sea of stars find that it's instead an ocean here on Earth that brings them together. Can Cade convince Toby to open up his heart and take a chance on love and explore the universe with him, side by side?

“Meant to ask you yesterday, but what got you interested in scuba diving?”
Cade sat down in the chair next to him and faced Toby. “Underwater rugby,” he said simply. Toby raised his eyebrows in disbelief. “Aqua ball?
“Hey, don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!” Cade defended his sport. “Think of it as, uh, one part football, one part swimming…and one part wrestling."
Toby looked intrigued. “Hmm…I thought it was just a bunch of guys screwin' around in a pool."
— Toby and Cade

Warnings: none of note

An Endless Sea of Stars follows Lieutenant Tobias "Toby" Dekker and Commander Caden "Cade" Flynn as they fall explore the ocean and their potential, with all the subtly of a steam train. Both are strong, to the point of exceptional in their specific fields. Cade is working on breaking into hyperspace travel and Toby is waiting to be assigned his next role, he desperately wants to go into developing hyperspace engines. While Toby is waiting to be assigned he is working in the scuba shop that he has worked in since he was a teen. This is how they meet. Toby gives Cade lessons. They are likable characters. I like the situation they find themselves in. The outcome is lovely and not as predictable as one might initially expect.

*deep sigh* I know some people read these for smut. But sometimes a story can be much better without going multi page description of the act. The smut is the longest chapter and overrides the emotional turmoil that has built up within Toby. Cade uses physical contact to stop Toby overthinking and it's not really addressed. The smut and the not addressing Toby's reticence make me uncomfortable.

Side note, this cover is so much more appealingthan the other I've seen. It keeps the same elemets, the sky, the boat and Cade and Toby looking soft. But the blue wash of colour on this is much more visually appealing than the harsh more simple composition of the other. Not an outright criticism more a statement on preference.

Toby was mesmerized by the play of light and shadow as he let his eyes roam over Cade’s body. After a long minute he sighed internally and looked back out over the water. There was no denying any more that he was attracted to Cade. And it scared him that he liked these feelings that Cade kept stirring inside him, afraid that his resolve to not get involved was starting to crack.
And wondering if that was a bad thing.
— Toby

This is a really fun, cute, sweet story, a near future sci-fi romance with focus on character and emotion. It hit the spot for me reading it in the summer—it's a well written and mostly light, easy read, plus all the time on and in the water had me thinking cool thoughts!

I enjoyed Toby's (understandably) fairly quick progression of admiring Cade to being his SCUBA instructor to becoming friends to pining. The depictions of slightly futuristic SCUBA diving are lovely and realistic! They make me nostalgic for my diving days (though I never dove with someone I was pining for).

The relationship development made me happy, as did the steamy sex when the time came! I didn't know if there would be a sex scene in this book and was very pleased with the one that is in it. Romantic, hot, and sweet.

I didn't expect, but very much enjoyed the tension and excitement in the last act of the story. And the conclusion is so satisfying. Lovely book!

An endless sea of stars. Sounds pretty romantic, right? But what would it be like to actually experience?

Like all of Jamie Lynn Miller's books, her characters are multi-faceted. Interestingly enough, there are no other characters but the two main characters, Toby and Cade. Others are mentioned, of course.

Some readers would start reading and, once they realize there are no supporting characters, would abandon a book. Doing so with this one would be the wrong thing to do. To me, having extra characters interacting with the main characters would detract from the awesomeness of An Endless Sea of Stars.

The story is lighthearted, but also intense and will have your heart in your throat before you realize it. But then, it wouldn't be a Jamie Lynn Miller book of the main characters didn't go through some hell.

This is science fiction at it's best. Sci Fi is my favorite genre, so of course I had to read it.

There are so many books out there that are sex-centric. I've read a couple such books and it got to the point where I felt I was reading the screenplay for a porn film... every other chapter was wham-bam-thank-you-man. Meaningless sex in order to entice readers. Not this reader.

An Endless Sea of Stars is very refreshing in that the sex scenes are an extension of the love between Cade and Toby. No thrust-by-thrust commentary. I love books that focus more on what happens outside the bedroom (or anywhere else the characters have sex), and boy does this book have a lot of it.

I love the scuba diving scenes, especially the one at Roscoe's Cove. Didn't see that one coming, did you Cade?

One thing I don't love though, is how long the author is making us wait for Gemini Project #2.

Hopefully soon we'll read more of the adventures of the starship Genesis IEA-01 and her intrepid crew of explorers, led by ** SPOILER ALERT!!!!! ** Captain Caden Flynn and Commander Tobias Dekker. ** END OF SPOILER**

An Endless Sea of Stars deserves as many stars as there are in the night sky.

I'll admit that when I first started reading AN ENDLESS SEA OF STARS my initial reaction was "I thought this was supposed to be a sci-fi story?"

As Jamie pulled me deeper into her characters and their story line I though "It's not over the top sci-fi and is turning out to be pretty cool."

About the middle of the story the genius that is Jamie's storytelling started to weave two regular guys with big dreams together with a universe full of bigger dreams and a side dish of adventure.

By the end of the book all I could think was "Oh. My. God. I have GOT to read that again! It's well written, unexpected, subtle and yet packs a punch. Quite simply, I loved it.
