After the disastrous expedition to the island volcano, Ioene, she is home with a warning. The malevolent tyrant, Mieshk Ulstat, is gathering devastating magical power. Unchecked, Mieshk will obliterate Kiriilti civilization. But when the ruling Trader Council refuses to heed her, Lilik turns to her own kind: the gutterborn.
As Lilik rallies rebels from the slums, she delves into her abilities as a soul priestess through contact with a nightforged dagger. Tyrak, the soul imprisoned within the blade, mistakes Lilik for his love from centuries past. Through their complicated bond, she learns the arts of swordplay and leadership. But when a surprise attack comes from a rogue trader House, she learns the hard truth of war: no plan survives first contact with the enemy.
Warships lay siege to the city. Traders and gutterborn clash in the streets. And with each passing day, the true enemy just grows stronger.
Being gutterborn doesn’t hold Lilik down, she will be heard!
I was so sure this book would begin with rallying up some people in Istanik and the troops would set to Ioene and the story would develop there. In truth, rallying up some people is a hard thing to do, especially if you’re not a Trader but gutterborn like Lilik and even more so when only a small group of people have made it off Ioene without proof of what happened over there.
In this book we experience the struggle for Lilik to be heard by the Trader Counsil, an important feat because that counsil desides whether or not there will be a need for a journey back to Ioene, since Traders control the ships and all.
So Lilik has a big task ahead of her. In the meantime she has to get used to being a celebrity amongst the gutterborn but in the end, she gets to mold that fact to her advantage.
The title makes so much sense after reading a particular part about Lilik noticing a Nightwoven Blade. Through that blade we can understand a bit more what is means for. Spirit to be trapped inside an item and what it means to handle a nightwoven blade. I won’t say more so I won’t spoiler anyting but that Shadowbound thing is a great addition to the story.
I loved every second of this book. The only thing I hate was that I had to put it down for month because of a health issue that rendered me unable to read for way too many months. This isn’t the lightest read out there (and therefor I was forced to stop reading this story for way too long because my mind wouldn’t process what I was reading through the pain) but it has become one of my all time favorite epic fantasy stories. These series need to be see, and heard more because Carrie writes some great stories! (Read The Broken Lands first, recommend both these series with a passion)
This series is getting stronger the further I read into it, this is the 2nd book and so many things happen after Lilik, the gutterborn young woman, returns from her ordeal on the volcanic island of Loene as a soul priestess and shadowbound. She comes with a warning for the trader council about Mieshk and the cataclysm she intended to unleash on the Kiriilti islands but she is completely ignored and jeered at. Seeing that the clock was ticking and she desperately wanted to raise the ships necessary to return to Loene and save Paono, her dearest friend, she knew she had to turn to her own people and get them incited enough to start a revolution! I just love books were a single person, a nobody in fact is able to harness so much strength to bring about the changes necessary for everyone's benefit, even though on the way many lost their lives on both sides. War is not easy but sometimes it is inevitable, if life is to be worth living, and the gutterborn had had enough and were ready to follow Lilik and her shadowbound dagger, Tyrak. Lilek is such a strong character, if anyone could get the revolution underway Lilek Boket was the one to do so. I am dying to see how the 3rd book continues as this book ends literally on a cliffhanger and I think the excitement is just beginning!
What is character development? I feel like the book keeps insisting that she's changed, but you don't really actually see her evolve as an individual. Not to mention Lilik keeps mulling over the same stupid things regarding Raav, he loves me, he loves me not, he cares for me, he cares for me not, jfc it would be better if it wasn't there at all. And to top it all Raav needed to be written into the whole ending part just to ensure Lilik can do the same stupid shit all over again in the next book, just watch it. Gee gee 10/10 for the most annoying romance subplot. Was even gonna give this 5 stars bcz I rly rly liked the whole Tyrak thing. Naw, m8.
While I enjoyed this follow up, I found it to be rather wordy. I know, it's a book! And while I love long books, at times I felt like something's we're just not very important to mention. I will read the next installment though, I'm curious to see what will happen next.
I swear these books just keep getting better and better with each one! After finishing one I can't wait to begin reading the next! So well written, exciting and full of intrigue.
I highly recommend the Shadowbound to young and old alike...I could not put it down... I just had to find out what happened next...I started the book late last evening and just finished......as I write this I am about to start book 3...
I simply love this series. The twists and turns keep you hooked from the start. The world building paints a vivid picture but not over done. And the characters......they are awesome. The story is fresh and you won't want to put it down
