Two quotes, both from the heroine's friend Heather, sum up Caught by the Dragon.
'“What the hell happened?” I whispered. “Why should you care?” Heather called from the kitchen. She picked up our glasses and carried them to the table. “I mean, it’s not like you love the guy, right?”'
THANK YOU, Heather. Indeed - why should she care about the wellbeing of some guy she met like two days ago and had sex with one time?
'“How could I even like him? He had me kidnapped so he could keep up some kind of-” Heather let out a squeal as she plopped herself in the chair beside me.“You wouldn’t be complaining about him if you didn’t like him so much!” she insisted. I blinked at her. “Are you nuts?”'
WHAT THE HELL, Heather? I thought we were on the same page! You don't believe that shit, do you? Human trafficking is not some sweet meet-cute...
Except it actually is here. There's no real sense of fear or danger beyond chapter three. Instead, it's all wholesome and affectionate and magical love. No rainbows or unicorns that I recall, but those kind of vibes.
It's not lacking in potential. I found the heroine's attempts to escape quite amusing - “What I would like is for you to get your wings off me so I can find my clothes and try to escape again.” - Ditto the '“Help! Somebody help! There’s a-um, a badger in here!” Great one, heroine.' I was also amused by the Lady of the Pond. Could she not quite manage a lake? Poor love.
What it is lacking in is two things - linguistic finesse* and time/space to develop believable relationships and fleshed out characters. In that sense, it feels like a lot of the 70s/80s fantasy I read as a kid, only with much less world building.
And there you have it - Caught by the Dragon is a very tame kidnap fantasy with minimal logic and plentiful idealism and instalove. Oh, and virginal heroines. Because, obviously. FFS.
*e.g. "a lapse of bad judgment", "the man who sat in the center of the was about thirty", "I didn't dare breath", "I find it vexing at all that I had to choose a Maiden.", "Would it be any different I would still tell you the truth.", etc.
