David works for Anthony Benedetti, the meanest dude on the north side of Chicago. David’s his muscle. David does what Anthony tells him to do. So when he’s told to go pick up a briefcase containing half a million dollars from a sleazy bar owner, David doesn’t think anything of it. But when he loses that briefcase, he knows he’s really fucked up. Because Anthony Benedetti is not the kind of guy you want to be on the wrong side of. And now David’s got 24 hours to find the money, stay alive, and keep his very pregnant wife out of harm’s way.

If you enjoy tough, hard-nosed, take-no-prisoners crime fiction, it simply doesn't get any better than this. Paced like a sportscar shooting down the autobahn, there is absolutely no stopping here, no rest for the weary, no pissbreak.

The plot theme of losing a bag of money, a suitcase of money, or a briefcase filled with cash belonging to a ruthless crime boss is not new, but when you read this novellete, you realize the theme hasn't gotten old either. Gritty, dirty, messy, realistic from the first page, this is the good stuff.

Told in the first person, the story of a mob enforcer in a jam, together with a backstory Works well.

This was a short but oh-so-enjoyable crime story about love and revenge. I loved this and now plan to binge a few of Daniel Vlasaty's books. He has a strong writing style that really speaks to me, and if you read his work, it might well speak to you too.

This is my kind of book

This is my kind of book. It's about a man tasked with picking up a half million dollars, losing it, and then faced with the consequences of losing it. It was everything I like in a crime fiction book. Told in short sharpened prose with no BS, no subtle crap, and no slow pace to bore me to death. It's in your face, no holds barred crime fiction. Highly recommended.

Writing about hired muscle is difficult without devolving into clichés or creating rather large, thick clunky cardboard cutouts that have no meaning. Enforcers do not have a bad rap, it's a limited rap: dull-witted, strong, slow, and not so much brave, just stalwart.

Daniel Vlasaty gets the tough guy right in his latest book, A New and Different Kind of Pain (All Due Respect Books). Vlasaty introduces us to David, the pseudo-adopted son of Anthony 'Ant' Benedetti, a north side Chicago gangster, and now his hired hand. We get glimpses of Vlastay's crime soldier as a child surviving an abusive father, building a relationship with the Benedetti family, and becoming a husband and father as well. As A New and Different Kind of Pain progresses, this background becomes the novel's drive, rather than David's criminal activities — don't worry, they do have something to say about what's going on.

When we first meet David, he is in Cicero, Illinois which smells "of wet ass and death and sewage hanging heavy in the air". On the job for Ant, David is sent to deal with a chronic wife beater and given David's past this visit will not go well for the abuser. Ant's instructions are clear, don't kill him, "not unless you absolutely have to. Just fuck the motherfucker up."  With this job completed,  David's services are immediately needed by Ant again, so he heads to Wrigleyville hoping to this job done before the night is over.
The dude's pretty big. But he has the body of a person who spends a handful of hours a week at the gym. Not the body of a guy who gets in fights for a living.

And I'm too tired and stressed out to deal with his fucking bullshit.

I just want to go home.

I just want to be anywhere other than a fucking hipster bar in a yuppie neighborhood at two in the fucking morning.

I just want this motherfucker to give me what I came here to get so I can get the fuck out of his place.

He gives me a little smile. I'm just waiting for him to reach out and twirl his mustache like the fucking douche I know he is.

Like Vlasaty's Only Bones (review), we are thrust into the fringes of Chicago, a place where most fear to tread. Even though Vlasaty's staccato-like style of Only Bones is gone in A New and Different Kind of Pain, the writing is still direct and urgent. Vlasaty engages us by pressing David forward through the streets of Chicago in a compact, one-sitting book. It isn't till the reader puts down the book that we get to catch our breath and say, "Well, fuck."

Enforcer David is like a son to mob boss Ant and is charged with collecting a case containing half a million dollars. Just after the pick up, David is robbed of the case by a group of ski masked robbers and has the dilemma of clearing his name with Ant.

The big money pick up and robbery story is nothing new, but Vlasaty injects his tale with a back story that gives the story real heart. It's a short, sharp read that's well worth the time.

I try to keep my reviews clean and I try to find words to describe my emotions on a book that aren’t of the four-letter variety, but I need to make an exception for the book I just finished reading: Holy (crap), I just got my (butt) kicked by Daniel Vlasaty and his new book, A New and Different Kind of Pain. This book is an insanely great slice of hard boiled noir. After reading this I can honestly say I may have already read the best book I will read this year. It is killer with no filler type of good.

Vlasaty made my best of 2016 with Only Bones, but this book makes that one look like child’s play (and that says a shit load about this book). The leap Vlasaty takes from Only Bones to this book is a kin to nothing I have experienced before. This book reads like it was written by a noir master (I have a feeling that may be truer than some people realize).

The plot is simple; David works for a true hard core bad ass man, Anthony Benedetti, and is entrusted to pick up a case containing a half million dollars. He is attacked in route to dropping the case off and loses the money. Even though he is like a son to Benedetti, he, his wife, and his unborn child are going to die if he can’t get the money back.

Not to spoil anything, but what I loved about this book was the plot doesn’t unfold in a manner in which David finds a clue to who these men are and chases them down. Hell no, this is book keeps it true and real. This book digs into the heart of paranoia of saving oneself and the people you love. This book is not the sum of all its parts…instead it multiplies each part by its other parts and comes out with a product that is beyond almost anything I have read in a long while.

The fact that this book was put out by All Due Respect is not lost on me. They have consistently put out the types of books I love to read. They seek out the dark, hardcore noir and bring it to life under their banner. They have just published one of their best books ever and, if you are reading what they are publishing, you know that says a whole hell of a lot.

Highly recommended.
