Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

Synopsis: At the Midwest Grand Prix Dressage Championships, there are horses galore...but Nancy Drew soon learns that those equine companions generate big money! When a prized stallion goes missing, it's up to her, her boyfriend Ned, and her best friend Bess to discover who's behind it...and why! However, it seems that their lives may be in danger!

The Good: As usual, this was a great mystery, full of twists and turns.

The Bad: Nothing, really.

Content Concerns:
Sex: Talk of breeding horses.
Nudity: None.
Language: Name-calling, at worst.
Violence: Nancy and other characters face many perilous situations.

My mother recently got it into her head that our house needs to be repainted and white washed which eventually led to the discovery of this book. It was actually a prize for some recitation competition won 5 years ago when my hyperactive self never got beyond the first 5 pages of this tiny novel. This time I literally read it while sitting on a pile of junk surrounded by the smell of paint, and I quite enjoyed the adventure and Nancy as a character.

I didn’t hate this book but I couldn’t give it more than two stars. It was an average Nancy Drew novel. It was mildly interesting and only got exciting at the end.

The characters had no real depth to them which was rather confusing to me. You knew practically nothing about the characters and that made it hard to understand why they were acting the way they did sometimes.

Although the book is rather short i still felt like the middle was a bit dragged out. There were a lot of conversations between Ned and Nancy which were basically repeating things you (the reader) already knew.

I don’t think reading this was a waste of my time but I don’t think it will be a book that I will remember in the future.

One of the most poorly written Nancy Drew villains ever… predictable within ten pages of starting the book.

Average ND mystery. It was fine, mildly interesting, nothing special. The characters were ok, but no real depth to them. Nancy's detective skills were also fine, though I thought she could have been better in investigating and solves the mystery through some luck. 3 stars.

As a 3rd grader I remember reading all the Nancy Drew books the library at my elementary school had on the shelves. I never realized there were more of them than what the library stocked. I am currently reading through some books that have been sitting collecting dust so that I can send them off to others; I noticed this edition is labeled in my daughter's handwriting. I don't recall having read this one. One thing I realized reading this as an adult (and it's a theme that runs through all of the series) is that young Nancy breaks the law an awful lot with her trespassing. Weird how as a kid you are in the thrill of the mystery and how some of the things that are discovered are during this illegal searches. As an adult, I wish there could have been a better way to have this play out rather than the encouraging illegal activities. It's a wonder our youth and in between generations don't appreciate the problems behind doing such a thing, as well as not accepting the consequences of their actions. While books are intended for entertainment for this age group, there should be consequences to making characters have poor judgement or criminal actions. I also wonder how it is that editors are paid so well and make so many mistakes. Yes, I get it people make mistakes, but really if that's your job, you should be better at it. Minor flaws aside, let's talk about the character that ended up in a hospital recovering from being unconscious, to suddenly being "killed" -- ummm, yeah, she wasn't and this wasn't caught? My initial thoughts are either the writer had a change of heart, or the editor felt that for the age group the death would not be appropriate, so the character was changed from death to unconscious and hospitalized. When that kind of change occurs, there should be a thorough search to make sure all parts of the book have the appropriate changes. Congruency aside, it's a nicely woven story for the age group that gives the young reader an opportunity to pay attention to the fine details to see if they can sleuth out the mystery before the heroine.

THE MISSING HORSE MYSTERY by Carolyn Keene

While attending a horse show, Nancy is roped into a mystery when accidents start happening. When a horse goes missing, it's up to Nancy to save it.
THE MISSING HORSE MYSTERY was a quick and easy read. I flew through this is no time at all. It kept me guessing, and I never quite latched onto the whodunit until it was revealed. Love that because the last few of these I've read have been predictable.

Nancy's attending the Midwest Grand Prix Dressage Championships, where many of the world's best riders and finest horses compete. But more than blue ribbons is at stake. As Nancy quickly learns, these horses generate big money, turning a friendly competition into a very nasty business.
Discovering a fire in the stables, Nancy barely averts a terrible tragedy. But now she faces a new danger: a valuable horse has vanished, and it's up to Nancy to save it. She pursues the truth down a trail of greed, deception, and sinister secrets...only to find herself in jeopardy!

I was hoping to rekindle my like for Nancy Drew, but I guess it did not happen. I won't be reading Nancy Drew #146, at least not for now. This book is good for a breath of fresh air. It's not too long and not too deep.

Let me say some details were confusing in the sense of grammatical usage. I'm not sure if it was me who missed on details or the book had its printing mistakes. Gilly was not killed, for instance, she was only injured badly.

I'm just saying.

This is a really interesting book. Nancy Drew and Bess Marvin are off to Illinois Horse Park for a weekend to meet Bess's friend Anna Lee Suna. There horses are stolen and many people get hurt. Nancy drew and her friends try to solve this mystery. I like this book very much. I have read it many times. All can read this book, especially children.

First Nancy Drew book ever read. Very good. Can't put it down!

This book I give credit to the beginning of my life as a reader. Before I didn't like to read books much, it was hard for me. When I read this book I discovered the joy and thrill of reading. This is a very good read for any age.

Nancy and her best friends Bess and George attended the week-long Midwest Grand Prix Dressage Championship. The horses were in 14 feet high barns with spacious rooms filled with hay. Nancy thought the horses were living in their own fantasy.
