I don’t remember what happened. How I ended up in the fire that I was dragged from, unconscious and minutes from death. I don’t know what I was doing in a town hundreds of miles from where the police say I live. I don’t remember…anything. Not even my own name.
I have no memories of Mason Rawlings, the firefighter who pulled me from the blaze and saved my life. Even so, it’s obvious my body does. It craves his touch, though my mind is blank. We were together, he tells me, many years ago. Then I left him.
As Mason helps me discover my past, I find myself falling for him all over again. But then maybe there’s a reason why I haven’t spoken to him for over ten years. A reason why I was back in Monroe. A reason that someone would kill to keep hidden.
Sloane is one lucky damsel in distress. Mason is great at rescuing. But, the whole story did not really end. Although it is not technically a cliffhanger ending there is just too much left untold.
So I have read some of Jamie's works before and was excited to pick up her newest release. It was really good I didn't want it to end. I only had one stickler point that made this a 4.5 for me but I rounded up. I really wanted to know about Sloane and if it all came back. I also wondered if Mason fully confided in her. I feel like there is so much more behind the subplot of what made him a FF than we were told. I felt like it was left at a happy for now point which I didn't mind but I hope that we at least see whether her predicament changes or not in the second book. I do hope that there is a second book. Sloane - had some really good internal dialogue throughout the story. I liked how her mind was at war with her gut and heart. I guess that's why I feel cheated to know how she improves or doesn't. Did she ever go back to see the shrink like suggested by the ED MD? Mason - I also feel like there is more behind his history than we were told. I wanted to know when he told Sloane he understood when she was at war with all that's happened and how she felt. What did he block out. This was more thriller than romance. I was totally fine with that. It was a page turner and kept you guessing on what the bad guys were up to. I did not expect the reasoning behind why they attacked Sloane. It definitely had a lot of action and kept me turning the page to the end.
Sloan has no idea who she is or what happened to her after being rescued from a fire. How would I feel waking up after a rescue like that and not knowing who I am and who to trust, where I can go and money? I think it would drive me crazy. Considering all this Sloan deals with it, not easily but she does. She also doesn't know if she is a good or bad person and believes if she is she will accept the consequences. But she knows one thing, she definately is horny for Mason.
Mason is the hot fireman who rescues her but also happens to be a old boyfriend who knows who she is. Well who she was years ago. But still when he sees her he helps her. But then when her life is in more danger her starts trying to find out why? He will protect her no matter what.
I really enjoyed this as was a bit different to books I've read. It gets you thinking how would you handle loosing your memory? Or would you have the patience to wait when someone you know has?
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I'm a big fan of Jamie Garrett's books. As always this was intelligently written with great characters. I want to give it 5 stars but the niggling thought of Sloane's missing background just holds me back. Sloane and Mason try to recover her memories by visiting places they knew when younger, as a couple, but why did they not visit her family or at least a mention that Mason knew she had no family (if that were the case). There were quite a few characters in this book but they all worked well together with good dialogue and interactions.
Waking up with no idea who she is, what happened, or how she got there leaves her feeling vulnerable, scared and alone after being rescued from a fire. Who can she trust? Is she a good or bad person? Can she even trust herself?.
Mason discovers the one person he just rescued is someone he has not seen in a long time but someone who once meant something to him. When he sees that she needs help he knows he will not turn his back on her that he will help her, even if it means danger. But what is hard is to know she doesn’t remember him and what they once meant to each other.
This story is filled with suspense and danger, mystery and death just waiting to pounce. I can't wait to start the next book.
This is the first book I've read by this author. I thought is had an interesting storyline, but was badly executed. There were just too many holes in the story, details that were introduced but never tied into the ending, like why her employer rented an apartment in her name that she never lived in, why once they had her identity they couldn't track a driver's license, bank account, etc. How did she get to Monroe in the first place, if she drove, what happened to her car? And why was law enforcement so stupid, equalled only by the heroine in making dumb decisions. Please--learn some firefighter, law enforcement and safe house protocol before you write about it.
Oh my! Putting this story down was almost impossible...but I had to go to work. It is now after 10:30 pm and I forgot to eat dinner...go figure. Mason and Malone's story is suspence filled. Danger, mystery, and death around every corner. I will not delve deeper because I refuse to do spoilers, but this was definitely an exciting tale! I can't wait to start the next book. If it is half as amazing as this one, then I am hooked for the entirety of the series! (No cliff to fall off either!) 😄
This book has it all drama, mystery and romance. This is a great second chance romance. Who hasn't wondered about their first love and the roads not taken. This book has action, adventure a mystery to solve and a villain. This mystery has old loves remembering their chemistry and finally their love. The villain is cunning, dangerous and a chameleon able to disguise his evil behind money and power. This is an amazing book definitely worth reading and the hot fireman and the amazing lady he let get away
For me even though i liked the characters the plot fell flat... I was expecting her to re-gain her memory after the second blow to her head also. But sadly it never happened. I feel that there is so much more that is left unsaid and things that should be explored, i also feel its left some what on a cliff hanger. And i found too many of the words repeated making this longer than it should be. I would of loved to of seen her regain her memory, go over why they split years before hand, and then love blossom once again between the two...perhaps a marriage proposal?!

The story felt it could had been good but I am disappointed with how badly and rushed it ended. In a way it was an ending as the crime was apprehended but I had read books with the same genre that this one was lacking it was all too rushed, not to mention force. I cannot recommend it to everyone as I did not enjoy it. It left me hanging and was shocked by the ending, I felt like the story could had been more.
Amnesia can be crippling, especially as a person recovers from bodily injury. Who was she; where did she fit in the world; and, did she have a job or money to live on? These questions were the story of the book. Found by Fireman Mason Rawlings, Sloane knew nothing. However, Mason recognized her from ten years ago and he had loved her. This book has mystery, romance and intrigue. Thanks for a great read!
An okay book, but it left alot of questions hanging. Also, for me, the fact that it alternating POV each chapter was a demerit. There are many books written this way now and I find that the story doesn't flow as smoothly as when it is done entirely as a third person POV or as a single first person POV; and that held true for this book as well.
From the start, this story was filled with mystery, intrigue and steamy attraction between Mason and Sloan. I have a feeling this series is going to be hot for many reasons!!
There’s plenty of smoke, and flames in this story and that is just the basic details that holds a second chance love affair. Mason and Sloane must stand against evil in order to get that chance. They wasted 10 years already. I enjoyed the adrenaline rush!
Great book . Lots of intrigue and kept you interested. I can’t imagine what it would be like to lose your memory, let alone have someone trying to kill you. I didn’t expect the reason her boss wanted to kill her. Good book, highly recommend.
Jamie Garrett has put just the right amount of angst, sex, romance and suspense in From the Ashes. You'll fall in love with Mason. Who wouldn't fall for a sexy caring firefighter! Sloane needs help and Mason is right there for her. Loved the story and the suspense. Would recommend this book. Worth it!
This was the 1st book I read by Jamie Garrett, and it definitely did pull me in to her write and enjoying her writing style. Who doesn't love a hot & sexy fireman? Love the cover. Reminds me of "Backdraft (1991)" with such a great crew, you need to see this movie if you missed it, awesome actors Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Robert DeNiro, & Donald Sutherland, just to name a few, there are so so many more awesome folks. Such a great read. Mason is such a great man, love his character. Old loves, get a second chance. Very hot & steamy. Don't wanna give too much away, Sloane is such a great match. ( ;
What would you do if you were rescued from a fire suffering from amnesia? Who could you trust? This is one of many questions facing Sloane. Can Mason, the fire fighter who rescues her be the one to help solve her questions and keep her safe? An explosive start to a brand new series and a gripping must read book.
This is the first in the Southern Heat series. Sloane has amnesia after being rescued from a fire by firefighter Mason. Slowly her memory returns. But the suspense of why she was in the burning building remains. This is a great start to new series and I can't wait to see what Jamie Garrett has in store for us next.
Loved the story and characters. Lots of tension, which is what I love most, even more than sexy scenes, though I love them too. I'd definitely read this author again.
This book had warm characters and a very good story line but the first half of the book just didn't move along fast enough for me. That is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 4.
This was certainly an intense story with twists around every corner. That she doesn't remember a thing and is brought out of a fire by an ex boyfriend certainly sets things off and running. It just gets more and more interesting from there.
