#1 bestselling author Devon Hartford brings you another hot contemporary romance with a mystical twist.
A sizzling modern take on Cinderella
Nerdy Jane Johnson has tried every beauty tip and trick known to woman, but none of them ever made men notice her. Until now. For the first time in her life, something is working. She doesn’t recognize herself in the mirror. She has literally transformed from nerdy and plain to downright beautiful. Before her inexplicable transformation, Jane couldn’t get a date to save her life. Now she has a date every night of the week.
The bad boy or the billionaire?
Gorgeous eligible men are now throwing themselves at Jane. They’re even fighting over her, actual fist fights to win her affection. It's a drama drenched love triangle in the making. It all seems too good to be true. The only question on Jane’s mind is whether or not her newfound beauty is going to last or if it’s some cruel trick of fate that will fade away as quickly as it appeared. Because everybody knows, when something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
***If I Were Beautiful is a saucy standalone romance with an HEA
I received a NetGalley ARC of this book for my honest review.
What a little treasure this turned out to be. Put on your big girl, "I believe in fairy tales" panties, grab a big glass of wine, and dive in. It is hysterically funny, naughty, sweet, charming, swoony, and every little girl's (and big girl's for that matter) fantasy. I absolutely loved Jane/Chelsea #2. She was snarky, vibrant, witty, tough, and oddly confident for having little self-confidence in her looks. Whether she was Jane or Chelsea #2, who she was didn't change. And let's be honest, what one of us who wasn't blessed by the Supermodel Good Looks/Killer Body Fairy, hasn't wondered what it would be like to be that woman who walked in the room and turned heads and that men fell over...and wished for it for even just one day. Ahhhh, but be careful what you wish for. Apparently, it isn't everything it's cracked up to be.
I can't tell if this is supposed to be funny, or ironic, or serious but it isn't working for me.
Jane Johnson is the original Plain Jane. The Ugly Duckling compared with her beautiful sister and mother she is short, short-sighted, over-weight and totally overlooked. She works at the 95c Store and her asshole of a neighbour totally ignores her when she goes round to complain.
She storms off in a huff and gets into a huge mansion where she wanders through the rooms and meets a rude guy who lets her keep a tarnished ring. When Jane wakes up she has magically transformed into a tall, thin beautiful woman with perfect eyesight.
I didn't like Jane, I didn't like the writing, I just didn't like it.
I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
If I Were Beautiful is a uniquely plotted, surprisingly funny, interestingly relate-able novel by Devon Hartford.
The story revolves around Jane feeling like no one would like her because of how she looks. She was also not happy when men would try courting her only to find out in the end that they don’t like her; instead, it was her sister, Chelsea, they really liked. It was Sunday, and she has a new neighbor who was a jerk, and on that day, she also met Wes, and the conversation between them really amazed me and made me laugh. Before going home, Wes just let her have the ring she was clutching when she went inside a room in the mansion. The real story will start from there because, after 5 days, she just found herself changed – physically changed – into looking like a supermodel.
This book was really lovely to read. Reading this will teach you that outside look was not important and it won’t make you happy. It was better to be simple yet happy and contented.
The characters were well-written, and I love how Jane experienced both sides of being unnoticeable and getting a lot of attention. You could see on this book that people tends to just befriend and like you if you were gorgeous and if you were not, then you could only count your friends on your fingers.
I just hate how it made me crave for the next book. I’m really excited to find out who will win her in the end.
I am really recommending this book! Just read this for you to see how this book will enchant you to read it.
Disclaimer: I received a reader copy from the author via Xpresso Book Tours.
Jane always felt like she was in her sister's shadow looks wise and then comes along a magical ring...who will she choose? A good read and I am so glad that Jane realised it is what is inside that counts. I loved Wes - such a charmer. Brodie - such a manwhore but I think we saw glimpses of more. Jane's sister was a great character and so supportive - it would be nice to see her get her HEA. I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 Mystical Stars The title and the synopsis of this book intrigued me so I dove in with a completely open mind. Having not read a Devon Hartford book before I had no idea what to expect. While it took me a while to get into the story and the characters, by the end of the book I was totally invested. The story follows 'plain' Jane Johnson as she lives her life in the shadow of her gorgeous sister Chelsea. I wasn't very keen on Jane's character, she was bitter and twisted with a chip on her shoulder, then as if by magic (well yes, it actually was magic), her dream comes true and she becomes super model beautiful and she discovers that having her heart's desire is not all moonlight and roses. An enjoyable read with some interesting, fun supporting characters I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book!We don't really see many male authors in romance, but I am glad that this is slowly changing, since they write just as good as their female counterparts.Devon Hartford is one such author that I love. His writing has the perfect combination of humor, romance and reality in it.
In this book we have Jane Johnson, who is very plain and unnoticeable. She has tried almost everything to make the opposite sex notice her, but nothing works. They always seem to prefer her beautiful sister over her. After a walk, she ends up at a mansion where she meets Wes and stumbles upon his grandmother's rings, which he lets her keep. And so begins our Jane's unexpected transformation. After a few days of rest, she wakes up to a completely different and more beautiful version of herself. And now she is being notice by everyone. But is it worth it?Will Jane be happy with her newfound beauty and make longlasting relationships or will she end up disappointed?
Jane is a really great main character.Sweet and intelligent with a voice full of humor.I loved reading about her transformation and her reactions to what starts happening around her. This book makes us question-is beauty worth it?Would you rather be noticed for your looks or your intelligence? Is it that great if men fall for your beauty, but don't see the inner you? Though all of us think beautiful people have it easy at times, it isn't so.Everybody is human and has their own set of difficulties and issues. The men in Jane's life are interesting.Wes, the hot guy who gave her the rings.Brodie her neighbor, who never noticed her before an her best friend George. Jane deserves a lot of wonderful romance and I hope she gets it! I'm on team Wes here and I can't wait to see where this story goes!Eagerly waiting for the next book! :D
This was a lovely Cinderellia-ish story. Of course, stories with this theme have been told since the dawn of time, so the challenge is finding a fresh and intriguing way to tell it. While this tale slips occasionally into trite territory, the main characters, Jane and Wesley, are so delightful you are compelled to find out how things work out for them. There are some unexpected but needed twists to the story, and while it is not exactly full of suspense, the plot has a pace that keeps the pages turning.
I was initially put off by, but later charmed by, the little bit of magic that is the underpinning for the story. There were also some implausible points. But the few things that I found annoying were overshadowed by this truly "feel good" tale that reminds us about the importance of inner beauty. Maybe trite, but also refreshing in such jaded times!
A good read and a real page turner! Devon is a new author to me and I am so very glad I one-clicked this book. A loveable awkward and funny heroine in Jane and as for the men... HOT DAMN, you need to read this book because of all the delicious swoon worthy man folk Jane attracts into her life, and not just from wearing that magical ring either (although looking like a supermodel can't hurt!), our heroine attracts into her life exactly who she is looking for - a man who loves the real Jane Johnson.
This book was amazing; it has mystery and humor, attraction and romance and a very original storyline. Devon writes creatively, with a superb use of the English language and great flow in every chapter. "I'm calling him Blaze because of his blazing blue eyes, stared down at me, his face an inscrutable stone mask. God, he was painfully gorgeous." "This was the most sensuous, sexual kiss I'd ever had. I couldn't pin it down, but it drove me wild. A slow burn." "I will remember your eyes forever." This book is a young adult, but even more mature readers will enjoy Devon's work.

Sweet, sassy, quirky PLAIN JANE was refreshingly unexpected.
What would you do if you woke up one morning and BAM you're a hottie turning heads all around town? I know what I'd do...hehehe ;)
Wasn't sure what I was "walking into" with this newest spin on Cinderella's story, but I was pleasantly surprised but the light fun read it was. I'm excited for the conclusion!

I really, really wanted to like this but I gave up about 30% of the way through. This was a take on the Ugly Duckling theme with a magical ring to complete the transformation. Jane (Plain Jane) was too whiny and too insecure for me. The premise that one had to completely transform to get any attention is anathema to my view that everyone has worth as they are. Just a real hard sell with very cliched characters. Sorry.
This was one of the best books I’ve ever read. All of us can identify with the main character. The book makes you wonder about the benefits of beauty. Loved Wes and the world needs real men like him. It is fiction and that’s too bad, but we can all dream.
once again Devon has created a MASTERPIECE!!! This syory has a bit of everything and leaves you wanting more in the best way! Jane is an amazing woman who so many women will relate to. A MUST READ!!! Who wouldn't wabt a chance to change it all and experience a different life!!!!! Way to go Devon!!!!
This book was a short, fun, read. There is something about this book that is almost Twilight Zoneish. It was strange and I had a hard time trying to figure out what really happened in this book. There is a cliffhanger which I hate, but I will read the next book when it comes out. I really need to understand this book and series.
If I Were Beautiful est un peu l’histoire du vilain petit canard revisité.
This book had such good potential to be a 5 stars worthy read.
The story was nice and different..I loved the whole idea of magical ring and stuff because let's get real..everyone loves that stuff.
But.. -The triangle thing. -The tedious scenes and conversations. -The dialog was very long and yawn inducing at some points.. -But most of all..this unbelievably ...well..wrong perceptions about beauty.. if you are a "hot chick" you must have a score of guys lined up because you gotta be a slut, too. That's so wrong and stupid. Why? Being good looking is what? Sort of like a stamp that you gotta have some slutty tendencies because..hey..you are beautiful. -And then that douchebag who asks her how much for that ass..
Anyway,I really liked the book in the middle..stringing Brodie along was totally pointless.
Had some serious eye rolling moments.
I really think this could've been 5 Stars worthy,had it been short,precise and well..in a flow.
All in all,not bad.

The beginning of this book took me by surprise. I couldn't figure out which direction Jane was going in. There were so many moving targets, the men at the speed date, the neighbor, the name she met getting a drink of water, the relationship with her sister, her own low self esteem. I really thought that things were going up for her only to have it slapped our face by the exact scenario that she said would happen.
But when plain Jane becomes something more I was shocked. It is something that every person probably wishes for at some point in their life and Jane got it handed to her via a golden band. The journey that she takes as the ugly duckling to the beautiful swan you learn that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
I found the story to be enchanting, an adult fairy-tale but with an actual lesson inside. It was well written and the plot was well developed. The build of the story the angst, and then the fix came at a non rushed pace. The characters are unique and easy to bond with. I was torn between the men for different reasons but found that her choice in the end was the best one. I wished there was a little more to the story near the end.
A plain Jane turning into a Cinderella,a supermodel? Jane is use to her sister Chelsea getting all the guys. when it came to good looks Chelsea got it all. they didn't even look at Jane. When she runs from her apartment when yet again a guy tries to go through her to get to her sister yet again she looses it and just keeps walking. she realizes she's dying of thirst and asks for some water. wes gives her a bottle and Jane starts roaming around and finds the master bedroom, where she finds the ring. simple plan tarnished band. wes lets her keep it and the fantasy begins. men literally drop themselves at her feet. this is what it 's like to be gorgeous? buy when havoc, a fight and a startling talk with her sister Jane decides she wants her old life back so she takes off the ring. she's back to normal, gets her old job back and gets ignored again like before which makes her sad and tries to decide if she should put the ring back on. if she puts it back on will she return to gorgeous or deformed?
next book we'll find out. hope she doesn't and wes wants her
If I Were Beautiful gave me a few bouts of the feels and lots to think about. Why is being so beautiful so important to people? Does it really make your life easier? Does it cause extra pressure to stay beautiful?
I’m sure the average person I’m sure has went through that “ugly duckling” that usually comes around during middle school when acne attacks you and you’re still growing into your looks and body.During that time I myself probably felt like it was the end of the world, then woke up one morning to find all right in the world. As far as looks go.
Unfortunately for Jane Johnson life was not so kind. She never grew out of her “ugly duckling” phase . She feels invisible to the world. Wishing men would look at her like they look at her older sister, Chelsea.
I had mixed feeling about Jane’s character, she had this “whoa me”” attitude. Often time I felted she was overreacting to situation because she thought she was being mistreated due to her looks. I should mention a few of her complaints
1.She hates her glasses - What?! I love my glasses. I happen to think they have this sexy effect.
2.Her height 5’2 - I’m 5’5 short girls rule. So what I need a step stool every so often.
3.Pale skin - Go tanning
During one of her “I’m not pretty tantrums Jane finds herself at a stranger’s, Wes home in desperate need of water. After guilting him to assisting her, Jane is caught rifling through his belongings . She finds this ring that looks old and tarnished. After he gifts it to her, she wears it to bed and that’s when things take a turn.
Waking up with practically a new body, Jane finds that she is getting new attention as well. Her only problem she can prove she’s her. Will this new way of life become Jane’s new normal or will things go back to what they were? Can Jane find her happily ever after being beautiful.
If I Were Beautiful is my first experience with Devon Hartfield’s work and I absolutely enjoyed every page. I found myself not wanting to put my kindle down. Waiting for what happens next is going to be torture.
I truly enjoyed this book. If you enjoy romance with a hint of real magic, you will love this story.
Jane Johnson has been unable to find someone that can love and appreciate her, and the only two relationships she has attempted have failed miserably. Plus, she is somewhat crippled with insecurities about her appearance and always compares herself unfavorably to her beautiful sister. One day, Jane wakes up looking totally different, beautiful in fact, and is swarmed by male attention. However, you should always be careful what you wish for, as Jane is overwhelmed by the attention and superficiality and doesn't know what's real emotion or how long this magical transformation will last. Will she be able to find real lasting love?
I found that I could really relate to Jane and her insecurities, as they are something I believe everyone has experienced at one point or another. I also really like the mystical elements of the story, which gave it a fairy tale like feeling, and gave the story uniqueness. I like how the story raps up Jane's story, but leaves what happens to the other characters open ended, and I can't wait to read the next book.
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
True to its blurb, this book has left we excited to see what is going to happen next. I am completely new to this author, but was lucky to come across is and love the idea of love with a little mythical nature to it. It was wonderful and exciting to see someone who had always deserved attention to finally get it, even if she wasn't sure how it suddenly happened. I think the excitement of knowing she'd be set loose to enjoy people seeking her out and wondering how she reacted really pulled me in and luckily it did because this is such a lovely read.
It was a refreshing read and had a unique perspective on the whole process of wanting, getting and the enjoying the dating life. It was written in a way that definitely felt a little fresh and exciting, rather than follow the typical route most write through, with a romantic read. I loved that, as it made it exciting all over again.
The characters are lovely, friendly and easy to connect with. I particularly liked the main character, as she was real and so easy to feel as though I was getting to know her. This meant that I was able to connect with the story and feel as though I was there. Being fully submerged into the read obviously meant I had a really hard to putting the book down and an even harder time closing the back cover (so to speak, as I was on my kindle) and know that I had to patiently, and very excitedly, await the next book.
Overall, a lovely read and one I would recommend if you want something lovely to read of an evening, especially with the day of love approaching.
Long awaited new book By Devon...... Speed dating, that's plain Jane's nightmare and Zac and Mike prove the point. Jane sadly epitimises the less than average looking amongst us, it was like reading about myself. I feel for Jane. I love the sneekiness of the author, he kept teasing us with the hero at the beginning, I randomly thought " Ooh here he is, no? Ooh this is him now, but no! I don't think I've ever been kept waiting so long for the hero to turn up! And then suddenly there's more than one...... CC is sassy, but I missed Jane, her awkwardness, her wishful dreams. but haven't most of us at some time, wished we could wake up one day beautiful? A chance to show all those that we do belong. I like Brodie's smart, straight talking mouth. He's fun in a slightly chauvanistic way. but He appears genuine in his feelings. Jane & Brodie's banter is hilarious, makes you want to lean into the page and slap Brodie upside his head! but you soften a little when he talks about his job, his brother Brian and sister Brenna. Highlighting yet again the indepth research this author goes to, to ensure all the facts stack up. The whole Jane & Wes adventure was so funny, but there was an underlying sense of being overwhelmed for Jane, his words, his actions, they were all things Jane just wasn't used to. And she plays a tangled game with him. And then, everything is bought back to earth with a thud, with just one single sentence.....the author encapsulating all of Jane's insecurities and vulnerability, all the flaws that she see looking back at her; " Only instead of my carriage turning into a pumpkin, it would just be me that turned into a pumpkin" Devon's books are always emotional, they somehow provoke thoughts that you have visited in a while. Because OMG, just sentences later there appears a flicker of hope for Jane! I am on tenderhooks for Part 2. I am so shouting in Jane's corner, I want to see her believe that she is beautiful and worthy......we shall see! Highly recommended!!
