Sex, Love and Rock n' Roll

Rate this book
A STANDALONE FULL-LENGTH DARK ROMANCE - NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART

Enigmatic, wealthy and wickedly handsome, Jack Willow is more than just a talented musician.
He's a man with a sordid past.
And a man of many dark secrets.
When he meets a seemingly innocent girl by the name of Leah, he pulls her into a secret sexual world, a world that will both test their limits and bring them together.
But Leah is not who she seems.
Neither is Jack.

TRIGGER This book contains the POV of a very abrasive male protagonist. There are RAW and explicit scenes of sexual nature, including dubious consent, menage, BDSM-style situations, coarse language, etc and this book is NOT intended for sensitive readers. It gets DARK, it gets weird. There are a lot of crazy sexual scenes and situations. As dark and twisted as this tale is though, it is still a love story. IF you can handle all of that, read on, and thank you for reading!

Special The first half of this book was previously published as "House of Sin" by pen name Vince Stark. It has since been re-edited and is now combined with the second half to make Sex, Love and Rock n' Roll.

Kick@ss cover, dark romance, handsome author, and Karina Halle's husband? Yes! I one-clicked Sex, Love and Rock n' Roll immediately!! OK, so I was excited. Maybe my expectations weren't fair. While helping her husband promote his debut, Ms. Halle was very clear that this was very raw, dark erotica. So I was prepared for that going in. But I wasn't prepared for the amount of fluids in this book. Yes, I know what erotica means, but after some scenes, I visualized the heroine looking like this (minus the purple)...

Sorry if that was unnecessary but I didn't find it sexy...I found some of the scenes kind of gross to be honest. Now it's true that erotica is not my go-to genre. In fact, there are only a small handful of authors I trust with the genre, but I am always willing to give a new author a chance. But alas, I temporarily shelved this title on my DNF list. But a few reviews promising an intriguing twist had me picking it back up once more and finishing, and let me tell you, "twist" is an understatement. In terms of plot, this book was wild. There were elements of , a BDSM club, menage, dubious consent, drugs, violence, torture...

On a more positive note, I actually liked the main character: Jack. He was a pretty chill guy most of the time, even if his judgment was gravely concerning. I liked the incorporation of farm life. I liked the modest incorporation of music which apparently is a shared interest of Mr. MacKenzie. At the end of the ebook, Mr. MacKenzie offers a link to his YouTube channel that includes songs referenced in the book along with other original music he recorded in his home studio. The song I viewed was added to clips of Clint Eastwood, which I loved!

In summary, this erotica storyline was definitely not for me and I was put off that a few big moments were left unresolved, however, right before writing this review, I noticed a note in the synopsis that refers to this book as tongue-in-cheek. That was the first time I have seen that term associated with this book and I wish I had known that intention going in. To give the benefit of the doubt that this was indeed meant to be more humorous than dark, I added a 1/2 star to my initial 2-star rating. That little upgrade is also for Clint Eastwood :)

My favorite quote:
"I like to dream; when you stop dreaming you’re dead. Sometimes dreaming is better than the real thing. I often let my mind wander wherever it wanted to go. Too many people question their own dreams and adjust their thoughts, as if others could see what they are thinking. No one can see, it’s a safe place and the only person who will judge you is you."

So I picked up this title one more time and finished it after reading reviews promising an intriguing twist.

I tried. I'm thinking male fantasy/POV erotica is not my cup of tea.

ARC kindly provided by author.

This a debut novel. I read only romance books, complementary and New Adult mostly and occasionally darker romance books. I'm definitely open minded and will give any book a chance as long as it has romantic elements to it. I was told this book is considered romance but wouldn't be what I am use to. That being said I gave this one a go, and I did enjoy it. But yes a few scenes were just a bit out of my comfort zone. I pushed on because this was a thrill to read and I was on the edge of my seat to find out how things unfolded.

Jack Willow is a bit of a mystery in the first part of the book, I wasn't sure where the story was going. We follow Jack as he takes us through his daily routine. I loved reading this Male POV written by a male author. I loved the writing, how Jack describes the things he loves. All those small things that make life enjoyable.

we meet Leah in the beginning, and see the connection these two have from the beginning. The chemistry is off the charts, some scorching sex scenes. We are lead to believe that Leah is a innocent girl that Jack wants to teach and open her up to her sexual awareness. To teach her it is ok to want the things she desires. But around the 50% mark of the book we learn so many secrets. They just start pouring out. A lot I didn't see coming, this is the part of the book that things picked up for me. I couldn't put it down from that point on.

I think that's about all I can say without spoilers. I appreciate some of the points made throughout the book, about being yourself and stop living for other people's validation. I would have liked more about Leah, to understand her better. Overall very well done. Not enough of a romance for me personally but I still enjoyed it to the end. I will read more from this author in the future.

Ok so you know that song 'Jizz in my pants' by the lonely island?

For some reason it is all I could think about when I read this story. It just didn't really click for me. There were a few times I was like, ok I'm liking where this is heading, but it never quite got to where I was expecting.

I felt like the voice of the character was very choppy. It didn't flow for me, and hey it could very well just be me. There are some great reviews on this one. It just missed the mark for me. The characters relationship was very instaOBSESSION, which is fine, I just didn't get it. I thought there was going to be some underlying reason, and there never was. Whatever not a big deal.

Some of the sex scenes are very intense, and weren't for me, but they didn't necessarily bother me. Just didn't get me hot and bothered if that makes sense. A couple of them were pretty good though. This author definitely has a knack for setting the scene, and painting a vivid picture of the actual setting.

I plan to read the book he's co-written with his wife because I think I'd enjoy his writing if it was accented by hers. I guess we shall see.

Originally posted on Slow Reader's Blog

I first read half of this book two years ago when it was published as House of Sin under the name Vince Stark. My impression upon finishing was that I couldn’t wait to see where the author took the story. This book is a raunchy, somewhat abrasive novel about a man who mostly gives in to his baser instincts as he navigates through life to find some meaning. Yes, it’s an erotica, yes the narrator is a misogynistic bastard with questionable ethics, but I still wanted to know more. After reading the complete Sex, Love n' Rock and Roll, I conclude that, although the first half is more intriguing (which might be due to the fact that I was a different reader two years ago), the overall story is entertaining, somewhat introspective, if not completely engaging.

SLnRR starts off as a pretty gripping, HAWT, read with Jack the protagonist spitting unapologetic truths about the world as he knows it. He meets the innocent, Leah, and he initiates her into his world of sin and debauchery, all the while unable to resist the pull of her allure. Their interactions are charged and sexxxy enough to set panties on fire. Their connection is instantaneous and intense, although lacking depth (though I think that might be the point). At about the midway mark, the plot twists and Leah as Jack's relationship turns on its head. This was the point at which the original novella ended, the point that kept me intrigued for over two years, and unfortunately the point where SLnRR lost me. It didn’t lose me completely, but I found myself easily distracted as the narrative became repetitive and the plot went down a bizarre and unbelievable road (although, I think I might've embraced the plot with more character development, especially relating to Leah).

Nevertheless, I would recommend this for its overall message. Despite sometimes seeming like a hipster narcissist as he bemoaned the unoriginality of the general populace, while idolizing the quaint, simplistic past, like only a white dude can, I agreed with his philosophy of always seeking change and not getting comfortable in our prepackaged lives. Sometimes we need to give in to our impulses, and follow our guts, no matter what society thinks, and to just live our own damn lives. I can roll with that message.

I think Scott MacKenzie has an interesting voice, and I appreciated his prose, especially set in the world of erotic romance—I'm all for having more male voices in the genre. I'd read something else he wrote if it meant meeting more interesting characters and experiencing a romance with some kick.

Shh! I read it, but don’t tell anyone! Coz I’m actually sweet and shy… NOT! *lol*

Well, since the author warned in advance the book is not for kids under 25 *lol* and the hero wasn’t a good guy, I expected someone like

But he was actually not that bad. I read worse in the books sold as romance!

Sex was…, sex was… ok. Just ok.

Twist at 45% was, well, unexpected…

DNF at 60% It wasn't good. The first few chapters had me laughing so hard at the many quotes and descriptive words that just made my toes curl. The storyline didn't interest me and when the eye rolls came, I knew it was time to jump ship captain.

Even though I enjoyed Mr. MacKenzie's writing, I wasn't much fan of the story nor the characters except for Jack who was quite intriguing.
I'm still keeping a look out for the upcoming book he co-wrote along with wife, Karina Halle :)

I would give the first half of the book 3 stars and the second half 4 stars. I am a big fan of Karina Halle and was excited to see her husband wrote a book. Karina warned that her husband has a different style than her, and compared him to Chuck Palahniuk who wrote the book, Fight Club that the movie was based on. I find that comparison very accurate. Like the voice in Fight Club, this book was very stream of consciousness. There similarities with brashness and vulgarity. But instead of Fight Club, this was sex club, and the blow jobs came as frequent as the punches.

The first half of the book is very much centered on Jack, a part time rock star and Leah, a woman he meets that he describes as innocent. He introduces her to a sex club, and there are some hot scenes.

At the halfway point, there is a big surprise and the flow of the book changed to more psychological suspense with a dark twist. It was the second half of the book that I enjoyed the most. I am more excited now for the book that Scott and Karina wrote together that will release in a few months.

I really ended up enjoying this debut novel, but the first 20% I wasn't so sure! I'm so glad I read on because this is a slow burning twister of suspense and emotion, if you give it a chance to grow on you. It's very different to usual reads, and probably not for everyone.

I was initially having trouble, well, because it was far from romantic. But friends indicated some twists, so I kept on. By 30% I was reading on in morbid curiosity as we're introduced to a BDSM club (the Bukaki scene was completely unnecessary, and I can see some book friends possibly leaving right there, however if you've viewed porn at some stage or another, you may get past this), by 50% I was completely sucked into this story, it got very suspenseful. The remainder of the book was an intense ride, trying to work out what was happening, what was going to happen, were people going to Die??!!

I love a male author, they have a unique point of view that is kind of cool. This book is told in Jack's point of view as he navigates life. Written by a man, it's quite a masculine POV in regards to how a man thinks, his daily musings about his motorcycle, his music, his sexual appetites, and I had to distance from my own romanticised point of view as a female reader. As I've said before, It's far from romantic. Most male POV books that I love are written by women, for women, and you can see a huge difference here when erotica is written by a man, you could say my rose coloured glasses are off. It's highly sexual. For men, it really is about his dick, LOL, and where he can put it, and where he can Cum all over ;-) There are some very erotically charged sex scenes, some Menage, some group sex, some bondage. Lots of blow jobs. Definitely from the guy fantasy porn POV.

I much preferred the second part of the book, as we started to get some cohesive thoughts as Jack's relationship with Leah gets deeper. A suspense element takes over. Things get stressful and I pretty much couldn't put this book down all day, to reach its conclusion.

At the end of the day, from my earlier misgivings, I ended up liking this book a lot. Loving it even. Jack was a Cad, but I felt I knew him quite well by the end, and had forgiven some of his earlier thoughts and transgressions because he really was quite sweet, and I loved how he ended up falling in love with Leah. Yes, sex started early, but love was a slow burning emotion, that revealed itself later in the book.

And I loved the underlying message that revealed itself: Don't be afraid to let things end, because it's when things end that a new beginning reveals itself, which will bring greater meaning and happiness.

There was a great band scenes towards the end, music is a central part of the book. This was one of my favourite parts, I felt the excitement, the joy. I actually look forward to reading more from this author. If he concentrates around suspense or rock band genre's, this seems to be his forte. He sure knows how to create a scene, and set a feeling. A great debut.

3.5 Stars - Solid Debut. This was a very strong debut novel from Scott Mackenzie. I really enjoyed his writing style and the male POV. There is a whole lot more going on in this story than what you might expect from a typical rockstar story and I loved all the unexpected twists and turns the plot takes. Looking forward to more from this writer.

Hm, okay. So, straight facts.

1. I didn't love Sex, Love and Rock n' Roll.
2. Jack's voice seemed a bit immature to me. Especially odd, considering his age and profession.
3. The plot wasn't too clear until the second part of the story. Or, really, about three quarters in. Not necessarily a bad thing. But until then, I felt like I was just reading one bizarre personal Jack fact after another. Note: enjoying an apple is the second-best thing in life. Okay.
4. There were a few repetitive lines or stories throughout that made me feel like I was losing my mind just a bit. We are just animals, after all.
5. His relationship with Heather is weird. And every time he talks about her, we get a rehash on what that relationship is. Also, there is some interaction between his penis and her breasts. We read about that twice. Once was enough.
6. I still don't know who these characters are. I know next to nothing about Leah. Or the guys in his band. Or Heather. Or random Sarah? All these people without a whole lot of background. Since this story is entirely told from Jacks's perspective, my conclusion is that he is a bit self-involved. I know more about his cigars than his friends.

Despite my gripes, it was fine. I'm, admittedly, a picky reader. Well, just a picky person in general. But that's that.

Brilliant!

This book was everything the warning promised, and then some. What a great change of pace. Erotica at its finest but with so much story that you didn't feel as though you were reading porn. And what a tale! I look forward to future stories.

It's rare to find an erotic novel with a strong storyline that is just as intriguing as the sex going on. It's even more rare for that book to be written by a male author. But Scott MacKenzie manages to walk that line between raunchy and riviting, sexy and sweet, crass and captivating perfectly. In his debut novel, the story he weaves about Jack and Leah and their walk through the wild side to find love and understanding is a roller coaster of emotion and revelation. Their flaws make them interesting, characters who you want to be a bit bad, a bit loose, a bit out of control but also redeemable in the end. The chain of events and how things progress is so natural you can picture yourself in the steamy scenario with no problem, indulging in some naughty play, going a tad too far as you explore that secret side of desire not many let come out to play. Overall a fun, hot read that leaves little to the imagination and a willingness to bring actions on the page into your reality, if just to try it out once.

I finally finished it !!!
Honestly it was hard and it took me more time than i'm used to but it was kinda interesting.
I'm not going to rate the book because i can't say if i liked it or if i hated it. It was like an experiment lol.
It's a good thing when a male author dive into the big world of romance (twisted or sweet) so i wanted to see ! Add to it an enticing blurb and a gorgeous cover and i'm in !
It was really hard to read sometimes because the writing was weird (to me at least, since i'm french and reading in english maybe i see some things differently) and it made the reading heavy.
Jack was an interesting character but i never felt once the chemistry between him and Leah. Yes some parts were hot but overall i didn't feel one thing for them.
Some parts were all over the place especially at the end because little things weren't clarified or just dismissed.
Like i read in some reviews, after a (long) while the story become a little more engaging.
Anyway a weird but kinda interesting read for me.

Okay so I loved the cover of this book and that's about where it ends. I had real hopes for this book because it's written by the husband of an author I love and I wanted to see how a man would write an erotic book. Unfortunately I'm not surprised. He is honest in the beginning and every reader better be prepared because this book pushes the envelope into the major dirty category. It truly was like reading flat out porn. Which is the main problem just like a porn this book had absolutely no emotion from the characters and a very weak story. Nothing that pulled at your heart or kept you wanting to turn the page. Good books (even erotic ones) have to give the reader a story. This literally jumped all over the place. Sorry I wish I could be excited about this book but nope unfortunately it was just boring.

Pretty Good Story

I really liked the premise of the story. After reading the warning in the beginning (sex, drugs, etc.), I expected the book to be more intense. This could be a really great book with some editing to refine and polish the storyline. Run-on sentences, basic grammatical errors, and misspellings were also distracting.

This is erotica by a male POV written by a male, already interesting.
I loved the most part of it - the characters, the characters development, the scenarios, the way all the things connect in the plot. For the most part I thought this was a five stars book.

But then, almost near the end, it just reached the "point of too much". This is a problem I have with books, we all get that life is messy and shit happens. A lot of shit happens. But then there is a lot and there is too much. Every time too much shit happens with the characters it just buggs me, and then I get tired and I stop caring for them.
This is just something that really ennoys me, other readers can be okay with to much shit happening ;)

There's also instalove, but I don't give two shits about it, just letting people know that is there.

And about the character development, it was really good, I just think it happened too fast and too easy for Jack. Easy in the "Oh, ok, I'm just gonna stop being like that and be like this for now on", cuz is hard to change, but he just does. Now, I get that A LOT OF SHIT is happening in his life, but even though, its hard to change. This bugged me a little after the point of too much when I was already tired, but it was good character development.

I think that's it, I had some problems but still really liked this book.

I never like to admit defeat, but I had to stop at 61% because I just can't force myself to continue reading this. If you know me at all, then you know I'm not one to shy away from graphic sex in a book, so that was far from the problem. But be forewarned that this book is not only graphic, but it also doesn't even address any type of safety concerns for the characters sexually and I did take issue with that. I get that it is intended to be fantasy, but given what they were doing it should have been mentioned at least once. Anyway...my biggest issue was that I just couldn't find a single redeeming quality about either the hero or heroine to make me want to keep reading their story. The quality of the writing and the many glaring editing mistakes were issues as well, but I did try to push them aside to give it a fair shot since it was the author's first book. I can't say that I'll give them another shot though.

For a debut novel I thought this was a really good one. It's told from a male POV. I'm having some problems articulating what I thought about it which is probably why it's such a good book. A good book forces you to think critically about it. I had to put this one down a couple of times just to put my thoughts together. I got it off of KU originally but decided to go back and purchase it so I could read it again later. My only real problem with it is I wish we knew more about Leah and about their relationship apart from the physical. I will be reading this author again. 4.5 stars.
