Thrilling Romantic Cozy

⭐⭐⭐⭐

There are several covers for this new version of Kee Patterbee’s book Waters Edge. I personally prefer the one I got on my Kindle version as it’s the most dramatic and artistic one, I think. The cover has a stunning picture that’s easy to see clearly, as well as the title in wonderful large letters and two colors, a subtitle, series, book #, and comments. And look, there’s still plenty of room for the author’s name in caps and nice and large there at the bottom. Not the top or in the middle. Not larger than the title of the book. Down at the bottom nice and neat. Kudos to Ms. Patterbee and her designer for this cover. I really strongly dislike covers that have the author’s name the largest thing on the cover, where the title should be. Okay, so you’re an award-winning author, you’re famous! I still want to know what the title of the book is. Show a bit of class and humility. Put the author’s name down at the bottom (okay, or at the top) in smaller letters than the title as Ms. Patterbee has here. And allow us to see the picture your designer has taken such pains to provide.

The story is a rewrite of the original first released in 2014 as Chef at the Waters Edge. Now I read that book and I read this book and I didn’t recognize them as the same story really. I mean, there were elements that were the same, but the author really overhauled this one and made it a much better story. This is a lively book with interesting characters that did interesting things.

The star of the book is the former FBI agent Hannah Starvling who goes “undercover” to try to discover who killed the TV star chef or was it an accident or suicide? Everyone is drawn into the mystery including the local Deputy Sheriff who finds himself as drawn to Hannah as she is drawn to him. Can they keep their distance long enough to solve the case?

This is a great beginning to a series and I really look forward to reading more of it. Recommended.

This was a nice beginning to a new series. It was a bit different than other cozies I've read, like the MC and the local cop work together to find the murder. Then, it wasn't a sudden reveal, but rather a plan to get the murderer to confess. I still liked the mystery and the characters and plan to read more. The only reason I gave three stars is because there was an editing issue...two chapters were rearranged.

The Death of a Celebrity Chef is the first book in the Lady Detective Hannah Starvling series by Kee Patterbee. Hannah former F.B.I. agent now Chef, is flying to Zebulon with her friend Cate and Cate's cousin, Buster to link up with their friend Louie Woodbridge, a food critic. Louie was a long time friend and fan of Julia Karas who was known as the Darling of America's Kitchen. When Julia is killed Hannah is asked to investigate her death since the facts of her death were not lining up. Kee Patterbee has written a book whose characters are well developed and plot makes the reader wanting to continue reading once they open her book. The many twists and turns will hold your interest and you will be wanting for the next book.

Really good

Fun characters, good storylines in this book. Did not particularly care for the extra details on every little thing. Some details are very good. Too many are just fillers to make the book longer; in my opinion. Love Hannah and Cate. Did not like the name Hymnal. There are a few misspelled words but not enough to distract. Overall would read the next books in this series.

Free download from Book funnel Murder Mystery Week l 19th August to 26th August 2017.

A murder mystery gem. I loved everything about this book, from Hannah piloting her plane to Zebulon, to Hannan and her friends solving a year-old mystery. I loved the characters of Hannah, Buster and Cate.
Great storyline that was full of twists and turns, keeping me guessing until it was revealed.
Marvellous entertaining read. The first book of the Series and leaves me wanting more.

Needed a better proofreader.

when I read a book that has errors in words and grammar, I find myself distracted from the plot and concentrating on the errors. as a first book the plot and characters were good, but I didn't enjoy my need to proofread

Cozy mystery, The Chef at the Water's Edge, by Kee Patterbee left me not knowing what to say first. The book is the first in the Twilight Mystery Series which quickly reach bestseller status. The main character, Hanna Starvling, has had consecutive careers, first as an FBI agent, a career that ended quickly due to an injury, then as a chef, and now as an private/amateur investigator.

World famous chef, Julia Karas was found dead at the edge of the water late at night. Although it was ruled an accident, no one believed she would have gone near the water alone, especially in the dark, due to her intense fear of the water.

Along with her two best friends, Hannah flies her plane to a festival in honor of Ms. Karas, who died a year ago. Since then, suspicions have arisen surrounding her death. They are guests of Louie, who is not only an overzealous fan, but a culinary school classmate of Julias, and is still in love with her. Louie is convinced Julia was murdered or faked her own death to escape a domineering husband, and asked Hannah to look into it.

This was a complex story line which I normally enjoy, but it got off to a slow start. Granted, the copy provided to me was the publisher's proof copy. Still, there were so very many grammatical and punctuation errors, and improper word usage, it made reading very slow. I started the book, then put it down to read five  others before I returned to it. Finally, at the end of chapter 13, it suddenly got much more interesting, and the pace picked up from there. It turned out to be a compelling mystery with a little romance thrown in. I can only hope the published version was improved.

What Makes This Book Reviewer Grumpy?
Mis-used expressions: "begs the question" is not the same as "raises the question".
The inclusion of a lot of unnecessary text that makes the book longer, but adds nothing to the plot.
Improper word usage: Only once was the word "further used correctly. It was frequently used instead of the correct "farther". All too commonly, the word "loan" is used in place of the word "lend". This is like chalk squeaking on a blackboard. You can find me online as The Grumpy Book Reviewer.

The Chef at the Water's Edge is an e-book that I got for free through an e-mail with e-book recommendations. I was in the mood to read a cozy mystery, and it fulfilled my reading needs.
The Chef at the Water's Edge is 3.5 stars for me. The plot is interesting, but I didn't like the perplexity to get us to find out who done it. I also find it a little bit long for a cozy mystery book.
I liked the strong friendship between the main character, Hannah, and two side characters that want to help solve the mystery of the chef's death/murder.
I might continue with the series if I find the second book in another deal.

Hannah: chef, detective, pilot, steam punk aficionado.

But right now Hannah is working on an old murder/suicide/accident. A talented and famous chef died a year ago and the case was quickly labeled and shuffled into the back ground. Now the deceased's husband wants to highlight her life on the anniversary of her death. Very imaginative things happen in the days leading up to the celebration. Will she and her friends find the true cause and finally be able to close the case?

In this first novel of a series I began reading at the third novel, I was just as pleasantly pleased by the storyline and characters as I suspected I would.

A famous chef has died. Our Culinary sleuth, Hannah Starvling, arrives with her friends and offers to look into the case.

It evolves into a murder case from an accidental death. There are cover-ups by medical examiners and more. The crimes against the deceased's family continues...Hannah must speed up her game.

A very enjoyable series.

I though at first that this might be just a cozy book to read. Boy, was I mistaken. This is an extremely well written book - an excellent who dunnit. The cast of characters was great! Hannah has a great background to be able to work through all the stuff that is going on. Not only did she have an FBI background, but when an injury took her out of that field, she found a new career in the food services arena.

This book is enjoyable easy read. I love reading mysteries and thrillers. This was not a disappointment. It was not until the last chapters that the reader learns who commits the murder.-----Avid mystery readers will "pick up" on the early "hints" given by the author but surprises with a final twist!

Excellent Mystery – Witty and Humorous
I really enjoyed this book. The mystery was great. I was riveted until the end! This is a good, modern mystery with a good backstory and sub-plots. The witty banter between the characters was great and believable. I am so ready to read the next episodes in this series!

Not all cooked up recipes for death are foolproof.

When Hannah was asked to help solve the real cause of death for famous chef Julia Karas she discovers too many things have been covered up or concealed when the case was closed shortly after the death a year earlier. Hannah and her friends find nothing was as it had seemed. Hannah meets her match in Detective Hymn.

The Chef at the Waters Edge is my first read from author Kee Patterbee and the first Hannah Starvling Twilight Mystery. I read it prior to doing a read & review of The Eyes of Abigale: Former F.B.I - Hannah Starvling Investigates (Mystery Suspense Series Book 4). A good fun read.

Who is really telling the truth?

Loved it! A slightly eccentric ex FBI now chef is handed a puzzle. Did she commit suicide or was it murder? Why is there such a web of deceit and lies surrounding the death? A plot with enough red herrings and clues for any wannabe sleuth.
