«جان مشونیس» استاد کالج کنیون گامبیر اوهایو آمریکا، کتاب مسائل اجتماعی را در ۲ جلد، ۵ بخش و ۱۷ فصل نگاشته است. به لحاظ بخش‌بندی، جلد اول سه بخش را شامل می‌شود: «رویکرد اساسی جامعه‌شناسی»، «مسائل نابرابری اجتماعی» و «مسائل انحرافات، همنوایی و سلامت». هر فصل با توصیف داستانی کوتاهی مرتبط با موضوع آن بخش آغاز می‌شود و کادرهای «حکایت شخصی» تجارب زیسته‌ی مرتبط افراد را روایت می‌کند. مشونیس که در فصل اول نظریه‌های مهم و پرکاربرد اجتماعی را به اختصار شرح داده، در همه‌ی فصول کتاب موضوعات را با سه رویکرد نظری عمده تحلیل می‌کند که کارکردی-ساختاری، تضاد اجتماعی و تعامل نمادین است. در جدولی که مرتبط با این رویکردها رسم می‌شود، سطح تحلیل (خرد یا کلان) و دو پرسش (چگونگی رویکرد و مسئله بودن یا نبودن موضوع) مطرح است. علاوه بر این نویسنده در همان فصل اول به اهمیت پیوند سیاست و موضوعات اجتماعی می‌پردازد و طیف سیاسی از محافظه‌کار افراطی تا لیبرال افراطی را شرح می‌دهد. با توجه به این در هر فصل دیدگاه محافظه‌کاران، لیبرال‌ها و چپ رادیکال نسبت به موضوعات با توجه به دو پرسش «مسئله چیست؟» و «راه‌حل کدام است؟» مطرح می‌شود. این دو بخش ثابت، الگویی برای تجزیه و تحلیل به مخاطب ارائه کرده و ذهن او را برای مواجهه با مسائل آماده می‌کند. در کنار این دو بخش سؤال‌هایی با عنوان «تفکر خلاق» عنوان شده و پرسش‌هایی نیز در قسمت «تمرین» وجود دارند. این موارد باعث شده که کتاب هر چه بیشتر به یک اثر آموزشی تبدیل شود که روان و بی‌تکلف است.
از آنجایی که گروه مخاطب این کتاب می‌تواند عموم مردم باشد، نویسنده از پیچیدگی دوری کرده و با استفاده از زبان ساده، تصاویر، نمودارها و تکنیک‌های مختلف دیگر شرح مسئله،‌ دشوارترین موضوعات اجتماعی را به قابل‌فهم‌ترین شکل ممکن بیان کرده است. این نکته سبب شده که استقبال زیادی از کتاب شده و به راحتی خوانده شود، اما می‌تواند به مدل «اقیانوسی با عمق یک متر» نزدیک شود. با این وجود اگر کتاب مسائل اجتماعی را کتابی برای شناختی اجمالی نسبت به مباحث علوم اجتماعی در نظر بگیریم، می‌توان گفت اثری بسیار مفید و کاربردی است.

بخش‌های زیادیش رو خوندم.
در یک کلمه می‌تونم بگم عالی و محشر بود.
یک کتاب خوب برای درک سه نظریه‌ی اصلی در جامعه‌شناسی( تعامل‌گرایی، تضاد و کارکردگرایی) و درک سیاست‌های دو حزب اصلی. همچنین خیلی خوب جامعه آمریکا رو از دریچه‌ی آسیب اجتماعی میشه فهمید.
بنظرم ترکیب این کتاب و تاریخ آمریکا هاوارد زین میتونه برای شناخت چیستی و چگونگی آمریکا و درک زیر و بم عظمت و چالش‌هاش، رهگشا باشه.

Textbook for Social Problems class.

This was a very good textbook, and very easy to read. sometimes stretches of sections were really long, but you have to expect some of that in a textbook. I liked how it was really easy to follow, and the set up of the sections was done really well. it was easy to find necessary information for assignments when needed. I also really liked how the online version had flashcards at the end of each section, and a making the grade portion, that help a lot when it came to studying for finals and exams. overall a very well made textbook.

This was an excellent textbook for a survey of social problems. It looks at social problems through the lens of different social theory and through politics which shows how one person's "problem" may be viewed as another person's "solution."

The best thing about this edition is that it is from 2009 and therefore most of the information remains current and useful. It does a nice, even-handed job of presenting the facts and the various ways socioloigists identify the issues and causes. They even present how liberal,s conservatives and fringe folk perceive the issue politically.

I read the entire book for my Social Problems class. This book was easy to read, was laid out nicely, and had a lot of valuable information. There are a few typos and it is a little outdated now.
