Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
Whilst the cases themselves aren't the most memorable, the mix between current day and flashback stories allows for a variety of character appearances and some great interactions and moments.
This volume brought such a big smile to my face. I really enjoyed some of the cases, particularly the one where Ran and Shinichi were children. Omg seeing their younger selves was so adorable.
It was also really good seeing inspector Yamato. He is one of my favourite cops in the series and I'm pretty sure he is not Rum. I really want to see his relationship with Yui-san progress. Also, I was really, really happy seeing a different side of Haibara.
The Ran and Shinichi story literally killed me - SO CUTE. This was the first volume I ever read in its original Japanese edition and I'm so proud of myself for getting to this point that I've been wanting to reach since I was ten years old. On so many levels, this is my favourite volume ever.
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
The case from last volume ends in excellent fashion! I have said this before, but some cases have the makings of a standalone movie and I felt this one has that flavor to it! Great cliffhanger conclusion to kick off volume 87 of Case Closed. The next case/story involves the Junior Detectives and a simple outing for a treat turns into a murder solving case! Two actresses (who definitely don’t get along) are staying at the same hotel…one winds up dead the next morning!!! This case is interesting and the reason for the killing is both sad and revealing…sometimes hidden messages can indeed be misinterpreted. The next story/case is a flashback to 13 years ago between Rachel and Jimmy. It’s a lighter story that I believe is needed in the series every so often as the murders and cases need to have a softer story in between to keep them from becoming too dark. It truly is neat to be reading volume 87 and smoothly seeing the first meeting of these two characters finally revealed. It was a story one didn’t feel they needed to know, until you got the chance to read it. I will say that it isn’t all rainbows and candy canes, but it was a lighter tale from the masterful mind of Gosho Aoyama. The final story in this volume is not completed and needs volume 88 to give you the full tale. This story stars Detective Moore, Rachel Moore and of course Detective Conan and the death of Teiya Asuka, a former soccer star for the national team. Who did it? Who had reason to? Stay tuned for the answers in the next volume.
I have mixed feelings about this volume. The first half didn’t quite land for me—the brutal case at the start felt rushed, with its resolution happening almost entirely off-screen, and the blogging case fell flat.
Kuroda’s sudden reappearance definitely raised my eyebrows. His timing—showing up right as Conan and his friends uncover more about Rum, the mysterious Black Organization member—feels suspiciously convenient. It’s almost as if the story is nudging us to suspect him, but it remains to be seen whether it’s a red herring or something deeper.
There were moments I genuinely enjoyed. The flashback to Shinichi and Ran as kids was wholesome and sweet, giving us a glimpse into how their endearing relationship started. The final case was amusing and hilarious. Kogoro and Ai teaming up was so unlikely and unexpected.
The police case is cleared up, but the one-eyed police boss publicly mentions Konan twice and is switching to be closer to him, and Ai hides behind Konan… despite stating to not know him as Rum, this is suspicious.
Ran and Shinichi preschool episodes. Something for the double-X chromosome bearers among the readers, I suppose. Their not-romance is as bad as Heiji’s. Funnily enough, Konan seems to be the least arse to the girls, compared with Shinichi and Heiji…
And a new case begins… also out of romane and fangirling (and fanboying). Of course it turns into murder, otherwise we’d not read Meitantei Konan here. This does get a bit boring. Tantei Gakuen Q was better balanced.
Ultimo caso super spassoso! Vedere Ai e Kogoro gelosi dei propri idoli è stato decisamente uno degli highlight di questo volume.
This volume has a pretty cool story about bloggers striving to influence more people, which leads to murder! Then a story about when Ran and Shinichi first meet in preschool! Shinichi declares he will never wear glasses like his father! (which is his main disguise technique as Conan) I really enjoy the stories of Ran and Shinichi from the past.
Okay, so I apparently never marked this as read back in 2023, which is a shame because I can’t retroactively change my 2023 stats. So I think I’ll reread it and have it qualify for this year as I’m marking it for this year. I do remember this story; it’s one that sticks out in the memory.
Another awesome edition. I loved the kindergarden story of Ran and Shinichi from both of their perspectives. It´s fun to see how different they think :)
THE WOODPECKER MURDERS: A TRAIL OF BLOOD AND SECRETS While visiting Nagano, Kogoro, Ran, and Conan become entangled in a chilling case involving the brutal murder of a squad leader whose body is found decapitated in a river, marked with the symbol of Bishamonten—the God of War. As more officers are found dead under suspicious circumstances, a mysterious group called the "Woodpecker Society" emerges as a key connection. With messages warning of destruction and suspicion falling on Yamato, Conan must unravel the dark past behind the squad leader’s ruthless methods before the next victim falls.
BITTER RIVALRY AND MURDER AT THE HOTEL Conan, Haibara, and the Detective Boys enjoy a cake buffet at a hotel, where they meet two feuding bloggers locked in a heated bet over their blog popularity. Tensions rise when one blogger tries to contact the other and gets no response. Suspicion turns to horror when the missing blogger is found dead in her room. Conan races to uncover the motive behind the murder and the dark rivalry that may have turned deadly.
CHERRY BLOSSOMS AND CHILDHOOD MEMORIES As Conan leads Ran, Sonoko, and Sera to a path lined with cherry blossoms, Ran recalls her childhood with Shinichi. Thirteen years earlier, after her Sakura Badge was ruined, Shinichi comforted her and confronted a suspicious teacher who had shown unsettling interest in Ran. The soft fall of cherry blossoms stirs long-forgotten feelings and questions in Ran's heart—did Shinichi care for her even back then?
