The New Wolf is a story set in the town of Black Creek which is a remote town on the edge of the Green Mountains range, Vermont. When this book starts we meet our MC Josh Nolan who is a veterinarian and his partner, Connor Vincent who is a cop and recently hired at the Black Creek Sheriff's department. These two are beginning a new life in Black creek are starting a new life in Black Creek, after Connor was hurt on the job. Josh has since bought out his grandfathers veterinary practice and the two just want to spend their time together, beginning again.

It's the perfect setting for something to go wrong. Remote town. Small town. Mountain town. Two men who after a trauma, just want to start over somewhere safe. *insert creepy music*

While reading, you are cued into the querks and intricate workings of a small town, and you immediately get the sense that something doesn't add up. It isn't until Connor is involved in a late night stakeout on a pagan holiday that he gets a glimpse of just how far away his and Josh's dream of peaceful living is.

This is a really fun book. Things are revealed slowly, over time as you begin to form your own opinions, the author drops little bombshells on ya! The romance between our two MC's is palpable and they are hot as hell together.

As Connor tries to understand new thoughts, feelings, and an all together crazy reality he has to wonder if his and Josh's relationship will be strong enough to survive, the new wolf.

4 stars to this story in the "Building the Pack" series, A previously published series, reworked and new covers, each book in the series is written by different authors.

2.5 stars rounded up to 3!

I am usually not a big fan of shifter stories. One look at the wolf’s mate is most of the time enough to result in rushed insta-love stories leaving no room to relationship development. The blurb for this one sounded thus quite promising considering that Connor and Josh are already in an established relationship. Connor, being a cop and Josh working as a vet has been a further plus – two professions I really like to read about.

And The New Wolf wasn’t bad, but it was way too short for all the happening taking place. The mystery wasn’t well developed and a lot of questions remained unanswered. And there was a serious lack of emotions, people are dying and everybody is moving on without a second thought. And I also felt that I didn’t get enough information on the relationship between Connor and Josh.

Considering that it is actually the first part of a series, I am hopeful that I am going to understand the pack and the danger it is in and the relationship between Connor and Josh better in the next installment.

This did not feel like a finished story at all. The beginning of the story seemed like the middle. It would've been nice to have more backstory on Connor and Josh. I did enjoy them as a couple and loved that they were already established. I'm just saying a little backstory would have been nice.

Original Blog Post: http://headouttheoven.blogspot.com/20...

After first reading the blurb for The New Wolf I mistook it for something that was like a book 2 or a book 3. When I saw that this was just the first book, I was hesitant to read on. I did not want to get disappointed. Well, I was curious, a big fault of mine. I realized as I was around 80%, I felt like I was reading something that started in the middle and by the end, it was like it ended somewhere in the middle.

The story of Josh and Connor was sweet but the werewolf angle just did not cut it for me. Like I said before, I felt like I stumbled into the middle of a story without preparation and got lost in the maze of things. It was really not a complicated maze but still a maze.

The story did develop in a way but the relationship between Josh and Connor became stronger which is the actual reason why I added another star in my rating. If not for this relationship developing, I am hugely disappointed for there were just too many issues left unresolved. And what was that about killing off a really loveable character like that?

The series title really should say it all, I guess, Building The Pack, "building" being the operative word? But somehow the story did not come across as well as it should have for me. I don't know, but I also realized something while writing this review: I saw the heat rating to be a 4, and I was frankly surprised. Did I miss the heat? Where was the heat?

On that note, I have to say I am pretty disappointed with this first book as I pretty much really enjoy RJ Scott's other books, especially about that dog Deefur. This means I will continue to look out for other works in the future, including this series, especially as my curiosity has already been tickled and I can never get over my curiosity.

I have realized for awhile that Scott has been churning out product and not paying enough attention to the result, but this one is the final straw for me.

I am surprised to see that this title had a publisher, because it certainly didn't have an editor. This is the kind of quality that I would expect from a self-published no-name, not three relatively well respected authors. Scott has written several books that I enjoyed a great deal, though nothing recently. Hecht and Kell are not my favorites but they do tend to turn in workable, and at least relatively clean, work.

These three stories are not that. All three titles are full of sloppy errors, particularly Scott's (the Adirondack mountains are not in Vermont; a car's driver doesn't look left to see his passenger in the U.S., among many other errors). For a series, there are some pretty serious continuity errors. Even the line editing is atrocious with words misspelled or dropped.

To top it off, Scott's works are among the most egregiously overpriced in the ebook world. I have been avoiding her for months because of this but I got seduced by the werewolves. I won't make that mistake again.

I'm going to try to return the books, because I'm really mad about having spend the money on bad product. I will generally support a writer who misses the mark. From three experienced writers, and an established publisher, I won't.

2.5 stars. Too short. While it wasn't a bad read, it could have been a great read with a little more emotional connection (People die. I didn't care.) and character development. This is a common problem with Scott's latest books and, at four or five bucks a pop, it's becoming tiresome. I'd much rather one or two books a year that are well written and thoughtfully plotted and characterised than several books that are short and forgettable.

I might give the other 2 stories in the series a read, although Scott is the only author I regularly buy out of the three authors involved in this series.

Josh and Connor have moved to the small town of Black Creek to start afresh after a hate crime in the city nearly cost one of them their lives, Josh takes over his deceased grandfathers veterinary clinic and Connor is starting over in the sheriff's office. Connor becomes interested in a series of unsolved crimes going back over fifty years that are attributed to the Black Creek Creeper and decides to try to solve some of them. But there is a deeper secret being hidden in Black Creek and Connor stumbles across it when he is viciously attacked in the woods.

This is a pretty interesting paranormal story that is shrouded in mystery. Connor and Josh are great characters, both of them deeply in love and starting anew in the town where Josh's grandfather lived. Connor is having a slightly harder time settling in the quite town after the noisy hustle of the city and he is suspicious of everything, Josh has settled in nicely loving the challenge of working with bigger animals. But when something happens to Connor and he changes Josh is willing to sell up if it means keeping the man he loves, but Connor has discovered something he doesn't quite believe himself and has no words to tell Josh what has happened.

Ah this story is like a breath of fresh air, so different from the typical shifter stories that you come across. A dangerous lone wolf seems determined to decimate the wolves of Black Creek and Connor and Josh get dragged into the danger by accident, which causes a strain in their relationship as Josh tries to accept what has happened. Connor is the poor soul who stumbles on the town secret and his situation is beautifully described, Josh's reaction is one of the best I have ever seen and I was so thankful that he didn't just throw himself into Connor's arms but held back to process what he had learned.

We have a pretty well written story that has interesting details revealed, the storyline doesn't drag but is just right for an evening read, we have some really hot sex as we see the great relationship between Josh and Connor. The shifter secret is really well covered and if you didn't know this was a shifter story going in, then the reactions of the towns people and sheriff's department would have you thinking they were all hiding a deep dark murderous killer. The other characters are really well written and you can't help but look at them through Connor's eyes and view their suspicious behavior with trepidation.

I recommend this to those that love shifters, standing by your man, hot sex and the discovery of a secret that you'd rather not have known.

What can I say, I liked the start with it's old fashioned temper and having an established couple as its core isn't a bad thing for a change. Josh and Connor moving from the big city into a small village where Josh is buying into the veterinarian clinic of his deceased grandfather and Connor as his husband is starting newly as a deputy.

There are no problems with being a gay couple in a small town which is good because one of the reasons for the move was a hate crime still showing by a scar on Connors neck. In fact we don't get much about the citizens or the village; the book is starting with some trouble in paradise because Josh feels guilty pushing Connor into the move while Connor is just quietly adapting to the new life. What makes this part of the book so enjoyable is the fact that the reader already knows that there are wolf shifters while the guys stumble from one odd feeling into the next unexplainable situation. As mentioned before it's so nicely old fashioned like a Spielberg movie from the 80's.

Unfortunately that changes when the wolves are shown for real and Connor is turned. Now everything is too predictable but without being charming anymore and the open questions are not adding to the lightly gothic appeal but become confusing and latest when Connor has to explain the changes to his husband the story becomes too fast and lacking in concentration.

Pity but now I know I'd like to find some gay Spielbergish shifter story, bit old fashioned, lightly creepy and just fun to read and wouldn't mind if it has some sexy moments ... there has to be a book like that out there somewhere.

I'm surprised I liked this story actually. I read a few reviews before choosing this book. I usually only read books with 3.5 or more stars, so I didn't have high expectations for it. I'm glad I still read it. It was on the short side, but I didn't really have the feeling that the story started in the middle. It's true that it would've been better if the story started with the couple living in the city and how the attack happened, or even how they met. I liked the mystery in the beginning when Connor was trying to find out what the secrets of the town were. I think I might read the next ones in the series as well, even with their low ratings =)

I agree with others that this read as an unfinished story. I know it's just the first book, so I will definitely read the second one. This author hasn't let me down yet, I always enjoy her stories! I really liked that it was an established couple and then having to deal with wolf shifters.

I enjoyed the beginning of this book although a bit more backstory would have been nice. We leap into an established relationship that just faced a major trauma and a big chance (all of which takes place before this book starts). The mystery is obvious but I liked the MC's and their relationship until one of them is bitten. Then it seems these two act contrary to everything I believed about them. The ending is very rushed and the book left a lot of unanswered questions. The emotion of what should have been some dramatic scenes just felt absent.

Exciting shifter story!

This is the first shifter story I’ve read by R. J. Scott and I loved it. It’s a short novella but it sure packs a punch.Connor and Josh moved to the country so that Josh could take over his grandfather’s veterinary practice. Connor was a detective before they moved and now he’s a deputy sheriff – quite a change from the fast-paced job he was used to.

Josh is concerned that Connor isn’t happy in their new home and when he begins acting strangely Josh fears that it may be the end of their relationship.

This book really hit me with lots of feels. Josh really cares for his animal patients and this comes through in RJ’s engaging prose. You can also feel the love between Josh and Connor and then the concern with first one and then the other is injured.

The storyline for Connor and Josh is resolved in The New Wolf but there are some very interesting secondary characters that will get books of their own and I am really looking forward to reading them.

Let me start by saying, I liked The New Wolf just fine. I’m all about wolf shifters, and when I read the blurb, I was very excited and I wanted to love it. The concept is great. A man gets turned into a werewolf without asking for it, and he and his husband must learn to deal with the changes in his body and his mind. Also, the mystery of who the rogue wolf is and why he’s killing people is a fantastic idea.

Unfortunately, The New Wolf came across as choppy and rushed. I realize it’s a novella, so there were time constraints, and I understand that. I think that really worked against the story. Another 50 pages, some more world/character building, and a more detailed description of that mystery would have gone a long way to helping this one along.

Connor and Josh start out as an established, married couple. That was very different for me. I’m used to the MCs finding their way to each other and falling in love. I didn’t have an issue with it, but this didn’t make it very easy to feel invested in the couple and their situation. I had a bit of a hard time connecting with them. Their love for each other is obvious, and I rooted for them, but didn’t feel close to them.

This was well written. I could easily follow Connor's journey. I got a clear picture of what he was going through and the difficulties it brought into his relationship with Josh. It's probably one of the best depictions of someone dealing with the changes from human to wolf that I have read in a long, long while. On the flip side, I could definitely sympathize with Josh and his assessment of what he thought was wrong with Connor. I did question how Josh didn't notice how quickly Connor recovered.

There were two things that bugged me a bit.

The ending did seem abrupt for what happened right before. There wasn't enough time for reconciliation after Josh did and said what he did. I was okay with it before I discovered the next book isn't about this couple and realized that I wouldn't be seeing a better ending for these two.

Will I read they next one? Yes. I'm looking forward to it. :)

What do you do when the small town you move to turns out to be just as dangerous as the big city you left behind, but with a supernatural twist? You end up with The New Wolf by RJ Scott, the first of the promising new trilogy Building the Pack. The Bratty Omega by Stephani Hecht is the second book, and The Alpha's Own by Amber Kell is the third. The blurb does an excellent job of covering the basics, but only by reading it for yourself, will you be able to appreciate it.

This gem has a smooth plot flow, and is both character and plot driven. The characters are very believable, and they DEFINITELY change over the course of the story. There's just enough of a backstory to fill in the gaps, without overwhelming you with trivia. The storyline has a solid foundation, and there are no plot holes to take away from the story. The sex is hot and passionate without being smutty, and the love between the two MCs is strong enough to withstand anything thrown at it.

RJ's writing style is straightforward, eloquent, and concise. I love how she takes the same old shifter premise and gives it new life with a fresh and original twist. After a heartbreaking death and a near tragedy, the story does have a HEA ending. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next one in the trilogy. If you're looking for a shifter tale that is anything but ordinary, this is the book for you.

Cop Connor Vincent thought Black Creek, Vermont was too quiet after working the non-stop crimes scenes in New York. Now Veterinarian Josh Nolan and his lover Connor have more to contend with than a crime scene; Connor was bitten by a rogue wolf.

The New Wolf is the first book in a three author Building the Pack series. Josh and Connor have been lovers for five years. The story illustrates the strong monogamous relationship they have. Connor did not hesitate to move to Black Creek with Josh even though it meant a big change in Connor’s career. The intriguing part of the story touches on the history of the rogue wolf shifter, yet does not elaborate on the other shifters living in the area. The questions of how the building of a pack started and by who is not clearly apparent. There is also some question as to the true identity of the rogue wolf intent on killing everyone he encounters except Josh. There were two encounters yet Josh was not bitten. On the other hand Connor was bitten with the intent to kill him.

RJ Scott’s The New Wolf is a mystery that ends in a cliffhanger. I look forward to the next installment of this fascinating series.

R.J. Scott is one of the authors whose writing I love. But I'll admit this one left me a little disappointed. Not that there was anything wrong with the book itself, but it felt "unfinished". I'm aware that it's the beginning of a series, and that there is more to come, but not necessariy centrering on these MC's.

I'm never a fan of short stories at the best of times, but this one definitely needed more padding. I felt like I was looking at a skeleton, and it needed the muscle and skin to make a true, whole, and complete story.

But, having said all that, it was still a good book. The characters are interesting (and that's probably why I'm feeling like I am) and solid. The storyline, while not truly new, still engaging. So, while I know the next two in this series are being written by different authors, I truly hope that we will be returning to hear more (a lot more, lol) about Connor and Josh.

2.5 I'm thinking

Interesting..

The name of the series is also a question mark for me. There's already an established alpha and at least 3 or 4 others (?) so why would they be trying to build a pack. Looks like they already HAVE one...

Willing to see where the next one goes before cutting the series loose since this is apparently a cross author series.

When Vet Josh and Cop Connor movies to the little town Black Creek things start to happen.
Josh works with his late grand dad’s partner and Connor settles in with the other cops at the sheriff’s office.

One day Josh find a wounded dog that suddenly disappears and, Conner and his partner gets attacked in the woods after starting looking into unsolved crimes…
The attacker is a wolf, but there is no wolfs in Black Creek...

But Connor changes after his attack, getting sexually aggressive; not the Josh complains though, and his senses get sharper.

A couple of surprising wolf shifters starts Josh and Connors new life.

I for one can’t wait to follow them down that road to see what happens to those two wonderful characters.

Ms Scott, once again, made my night♥

This is a story that I wish wasn't a PNR. The relationship between Josh and Connor was amazing and I wish that the story had focused solely on that without throwing the whole concept of werewolves into it. They were a strong, established couple I would have loved to see their relationship from the beginning through the attack and the move to Vermont. Once the PNR angle was thrown in things started to fall apart for me and there were more questions that kept popping up without answers. I didn't like how things ended up for the men and I felt that the foundation of their HEA was rocked. I found that depressing.

Loved how the author wrote the subtle changes in Connor and how Josh dealt with his lover's transformation. One thing about this book though is that it felt too short. I wanted to read more about the couple and the pack dynamics but I guess that is what the sequel is for. :)

I liked the characters but it felt more like the beginning of a story than a complete novel on its own, or there were a lot of plot threads that started out if nowhere and went nowhere either. The resolution was abrupt and superficial but I am guessing it gets fleshed out in the next installment.

This is a quick and exciting shifter read that I really enjoyed!

A dangerous lone wolf is intent on destroying the beginnings of a pack and when Connor is attacked, and near death, there is only one thing that can save him. A wolf shifter’s bite.

After a hate crime leaves one of them near dead, Veterinarian Josh Nolan and Cop Connor Vincent are starting a new life in Black Creek, a remote town on the edge of the Green Mountains range, Vermont.
Josh is taking over his grandfather's practice, and Connor starts a new position with the local sheriff's office.
When Connor becomes curious about unsolved crimes going back fifty years he can't know the kind of secrets he begins to unearth. Or the danger that he puts himself and Josh in.

The rogue wolf is going around attacking people, human and shifter alike and Connor is in serious danger. He has the lifesaving bite, and is curious to see who else in the new home town is a shifter? As Connor trusts Josh with the story, there a few things they learn about Josh’s grandfather into the bargain!

This story has a lovely committed couple making life changes for each other, fantastic beasts and plenty of intrigue. It has a gentle pace but there is still plenty of action. Since it’s a quick read, I’d love more from these characters.

I was given a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

While I was reading the first part of this story I have to admit feeling incredibly lost. I kept thinking maybe I missed a book, but no. I didn’t. This felt like it started right in the middle of a series. The first part was a bit scattered for me. I think more background into Josh and Connor’s relationship would have helped immensely. I got and felt the passion this couple had for each other but the emotional connection lacked for me. I’ve read and loved other stories by this author but unfortunately this was not one of my favorites.

After unspeakable violence shatters their happiness, Josh and Connor decide to relocate. A small, quieter town will hopefully prove safer for this couple.

Connor is happy with Josh and the new life they’re building but there’s just something not quite right in the town of Black Creek.

After another life and death situation, Connor finds himself not feeling quite right. All of his senses are enhanced and things don’t feel quite right.

Connor learns that in order to save his life he had to be changed into a wolf shifter. Needless to say this is quite a shock for Connor and for Josh.

But the couple and town have bigger problems. There’s a homicidal wolf shifter and the hunt and it seems like no one can stop him from killing again.

Like I mentioned this one was just ok for me. Felt not quite finished. But solid writing like I’ve come to appreciate with this author.
