A mysterious, blinding white light, followed by a vision, haunts Mandy until something unthinkable happens. She comes home from school to find her mother badly injured. On instinct, through her tears, forces from within surge through her fingertips into her mother, giving her a second wind. She urges Mandy to take a note and leave, but she can't -- not yet. Her neighbor, Joel, finds her and drags her crying towards the door. What awaits them on the other side sends them back into the house, where she learns Joel isn't who she thought. Her entire life is turned upside down as her destiny sends her and Joel deep into the world of Bloodseekers and other supernatural creatures.
Elle Klass is an award winning author. She currently lives in Florida with her family. To date she has written and published over sixteen books, in varying genre's including mystery, suspense, psychological thrillers, fantasy, sci-fi and contemporary fiction. When she's not writing she's spending time with family or friends, traveling, relaxing at home watching ghost and horror movies or listening to an audio book.
Elle Klass fans will undoubtedly love “The Monster Upstairs”, latest in her “Bloodseeker” series set in historic St. Augustine, Florida.
This heart-stopping sequel to the first book in this series, “The Vampires Next Door”, provides a wild ride (some onboard a rather hot werewolf) as the lethal conflict between Bloodseekers and Slayers intensifies. Slayers aren’t alone in their quest; in case you haven’t already guessed, werewolves are likewise engaged in this timeless battle, as well as Light witches and Dark witches, their mysterious ties revealed in this suspenseful Young Adult thriller. I’m not normally a vampire fan, but Elle’s have a slightly different twist and culture, that makes them more interesting. Especially the Slayers, tasked with keeping them under control or, better yet, eliminated, through individual powers endowed through their amulets.
The author continues her enviable ability to bring vivid and memorable characters to life, as she has with all of her series. In this story we meet teenage Mandy, who’s suddenly confronted by unexpected and daunting challenges associated with her fated destiny. Previously unaware she’s the product of a forbidden liaison, she discovers family secrets in a shocking turn of events that change her life forever. Whisked away to Wolf Manor, she discovers the true nature of the mysterious man named Joel and his mother as well as the fateful roles they’ve played in her life.
Each supernatural entity has its own fascinating agenda as the forces of good and evil battle for dominance. The author brings refreshing new twists to classic supernatural beings you only thought you knew and understood. Their respective cultures and the relationships between them, both as individuals and groups, are nicely developed, bringing depth and credibility to their intriguing world.
Alison and Rodham, along with the other amulet-wielding Slayers you met in “The Vampires Next Door”, return, their fates converging with Mandy’s and Joel’s, as this clever tale gathers momentum and complexity, ultimately converging in a clash between powerful supernatural forces in historic, mystery-laden Saint Augustine. And there’s more in this series to come!
This Teen/Young Adult thriller is a fast read, but in spite of the paranormal subject, not overly graphic or so scary you can’t read it at night. I’m a real coward when it comes to such stuff, but had no problems being creeped out. I recommend reading “The Vampires Next Door” first, if you haven’t already, so you can follow more easily how the two books and characters fit together.
Disclaimer: I was given this book for free as part of the Library Thing Early Reviewer (LTER) program for an honest review.
This book follows on from book one, The Vampires Next Door. The story opens up with a new set of characters, Mandy and Joel, giving a little bit of information of who they are and how they fit in to the story. If you have read book one, there are no surprises as to Mandy's origins. The opening story is action packed and exciting giving the reader a go go go feeling. However, I believe to appreciate the story fully, I strongly recommend reading book one before book two. As the story progresses, the he author does a good, but brief synopsis, of the characters from book one, but it is so brief that I think the reader would be missing out on vital information that makes the puzzle pieces all fit together.
As the story moves forward, Mandy & Joel intertwine with Alison, Rodham and the other Slayers. This book focused more on the story, as the character building had predominately been done in book one. I really enjoyed read one chapter on Mandy's journey then followed by the next chapter on the Slayers told through Alison's journey. This book also had some fighting with the Bloodseekers but was done tastefully for the age group it is aimed at. I really enjoyed where the story is heading and the journey each of the characters are going on. Characters that were mentioned in the first book, and to an extent in the second book are revealed to be more than what you thought they were. This book ends with a bit of a suspense, wondering where the storyline will go and how the characters will further develop based on where the story takes them.
It is interesting to find ourselves going between Jacksonville and St. Augustine, FL in this book. Who is Mandy? What happens that sets her on her path to St. Augustine? When Mandy gets home from school one day, what does she see and smell? Why was she late coming home this day? Who and what is Joel? In this book we meet a whole new group of people or beings that include Alistair. Who are they? Who is Armana? Can the slayers get Veronica back? There were lots of twists and turns in this book that I did not expect. It leaves on a cliff hanger, be prepared to need to read part 3!

It has been a little while since I read the first book but I really enjoyed that one (four stars). I specifically wanted to wait and read this book around Halloween time, which I did. I knew it was a sequel but would follow two new characters so I wasn’t sure how we would see the characters from the first book. I ended up giving this book three stars because it was just an okay read for me. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. If I had re-read the first book and then immediately read this, I could possibly have a different opinion. The beginning of this book went very quickly. We had the prologue and then we are immediately introduced to one of the main points of the book in the first chapter. This is not necessarily a bad thing but I did find it going really quickly. Towards the middle/end of the books I was confused on the sister part of the plot. Part of that is on me because I forgot about Veronica from the first book. The ending was also a little confusing, again because of the sister plot. I’m still not sure how many sisters there are. I will have to go back and read the last chapter or so. I also wish that the chapters were labeled with which character we were following. I thought I was reading about Mandy but it was Alison at some points. That’s just a personal preference for me. Again, overall just an okay read for me. I in no way discourage anyone from not trying the first book because I really enjoyed that one. If you are into supernatural type reads then definitely try and pick this series up. You may just find that you love it.
This instalment of The Blood Seekers, introduces some new characters who are linked to those in the first one. Although there are snippets of what occured previously, it might be worth reading the first book to have a better idea of the whole concept.
Mandy is an ordinary girl who lives with her mother. She has known, Joel, her upstairs neighbour and friend for as long as she can remember.
On returning home one day, Mandy is met with a shocking scene which sends her in distress. She doesn't have much time to comprehend what's just happened as she is being hunted. Joel comes to the rescue and helps her to get away. This is where she is about to discover a whole new world.
She finds out that Joel isn't who he appears to be. She has always looked upon him as a friend and starts to see him with different eyes. In a very good way! Together, they face some dangerous situations and she begins to understand her true nature and her real purpose in her life. A purpose that she can't ignore!
Rodham and Alison are the main characters from the first book and in this one, they are trying to find Veronica, their friend who has been abducted. Somehow, her abduction ties in with what's currently going on in Mandy's life. Some of the things that have been puzzling Mandy, even before this new development, start to make sense. Will she solve the whole puzzle?
This instalment portrays werewolves, white and dark witches, bloodseekers and the slayers who are the main topic of the story. It's a well paced story with endless mysteries. An innovative, compelling and interesting concept. It has a good ending but it looks like there is more to come. Amara, one of the newcomers remains a mystery. Which side is she really on? Then, there is the surprise with Vicky, Alison's best friend. It will be interesting to see if there are further developments to answer some of these questions. This would appeal to lovers of the paranormal who like a good variety of supernatural beings in one place.
Another good story from Elle Klass! In The Monster Upstairs, the world of sixteen year old Mandy gets transformed in an instant when her mother is bitten by something not of this world. We soon meet her neighbor, Joel, and eventually Caly, Alison, Rodham and Victoria. All the characters we come to know and love in this novel have supernatural powers that take various forms. We're soon involved with the world of slayers, bloodseekers, werewolves, shiftlings and twins. The dynamics among the carefully developed characters as well as their adventures with amulets, violet gamma-rays and magic mansions keeps the reader's attention moving along. There's an underground world beneath parts of Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Florida that few know of. It's inhabited by creatures of the night. Ms. Klass's knowledge and love of the area as well as her creative imagination always impresses.
Sixteen year old Mandy arrives home to find her mother on the brink of death-injured by something or someone very dangerous. Before Mandy's mother passes, she imparts some important but mysterious information to her. Mandy is then whisked off into a new and dangerous world by her upstairs neighbor, Joel. Very quickly, Mandy learns that her life is not what is seems. Mandy is a twin daughter of a dark witch and light witch as well as the next amethyst Slayer. The woman she thought was her mother, as well as Joel are really Werewolves who have been protecting her. Now, it is time that Mandy learn to harness her powers. The rest of the Slayers need Mandy in order to help rescue her twin, Veronica.
The Monster Upstairs picks up right where The Vampires Next Door leaves off and bounces between Mandy and Joel's story and Allison, Rodham, Lacy and Veronica's story. In The Monster Upstairs we get to meet even more supernatural creatures: werewolves, shifters and boggarts. Mandy's journey is a supernatural adventure that is action-packed from the start. I enjoyed learning about the light and dark witches, the werewolf pack and how they fit into everything. With Mandy's gifts, the Slayers are growing in strength, but not complete yet. It seems that Veronica has some tricks up her sleeve to help the others get to her and when Allison's friend Vicky visits, they might find another piece of their Slayer puzzle.

This one is the second book in this series, and it's darker than the first. It tells more of Elida's family's story and what happened years ago that awful night when almost the entire family was brutally slaughtered. This is a thriller and at times graphically violent, but it's well written and weaves an interesting plot. I recommend to the reading community. I have to read the rest of this series to find out what happens next.
I was given a digital copy in return for an honest review.
Even though this was the second book in a series it was easy to read and understand. I caught up pretty quick. Vampire/Werewolf books aren't really my thing but this one was ok. I felt the ending was rushed and a tad confusing.
This book took me by surprise so much mystery and dare into one book.. I really enjoyed how the author was able to include love with all the pain it had. I would include a more detailed review in my blog if your interested to find out more.
